White Ruby

When I look through the white-bordered cards up to the eighth and ninth edition, it's like flipping through an old beloved children's book.

I've been carrying this deck idea around with me for a long time, but now I've used the easter holidays and the corona lockdown to build a deck with white-bordered cards only, that can compete with established casual decks.

The biggest challenge in building this deck is the limited card pool, the lack of many EDH staples and the comparatively high mana costs for the alternative cards. But this deck should be able to keep up with the other decks at the table. The strategy in a nutshell:

  • We copy and steal whatever we can get our hands on.
  • We sacrifice the stolen stuff to our advantage.
  • We do untap shenanigans to copy and sac repeatedly.
  • We use old mechanics (super trample and regenerate) to push damage through superior creatures and boards.
  • We take the best that the white-bordered editions have to offer in terms of ramp, draw, removal and control.

A more detailed description of the strategy and individual card choices will follow soon.

I am very happy about every comment, questions and suggestions! :)

Updates Add

  • Windfall (out) -> Reprisal (in) I‘m often the player with the most cards in hand, which makes a Windfall often worse. Especially, because we don‘t have access to other combo pieces like Notion Thief.
  • Portent (out) -> Impulse (in) Portent has a lower cmc and can shuffle the library, which is nice, but it‘s a sorcery. Impulse, in contrast, can be cast at instant speed, which provides much more flexibility.
