  • Landfall our way to victory in a number of different ways.

  • We are built around Primal Surge so if it resolves we can put as much of our deck onto the battlefield as we need to secure the win.

  • Landfall so we can accrue extra value from the most basic action of MTG: putting a land into play.

  • 2+ land drops on our turn generally in a landfall list you want anything and everything that puts extra lands onto the battlefield like Cultivate. I want to do something slightly different: aim for 2+ land drops a turn. To do this we need to constantly have 2+ lands in hand so continuous draw engines like Rhystic Study or Song of Creation will be essential. Not sure how viable this is but it seems fun to try.

  • All permanents I really enjoy building a deck around a card, theme or idea and Primal Surge is perfect. We need all of our spells to be permanents so we can choose when it ends, though I see merit in adding a few non-permanents to add suspense in how far we can go. After I get my first win off Primal Surge I may do just that.

  • Illuna, Apex of Wishes inspires our permanent only list through their mutate ability which can be used on every creature in our list excluding Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain and Tireless Tracker.

  • While building around Illuna’s mutate trigger would be fun it is just free value here. Thus, we have a small package of scry via Soothsaying, Thassa, God of the Sea and Nissa, Steward of Elements to first and foremost smooth out our draws and then control the top for Illuna.

  • And yes, Omnath, Locus of the Roil may be a better landfall commander but I do not own one nor do I want to go elemental tribal (though many in here are just that). I impulsively bought Illuna’s showcase artwork because I loved it and have always wanted to do landfall in RUG colors, so here we are!
