Hello, and welcome to Wizard Prowess Tribal, my first deck for Dominaria Standard. As always, +1 if you like what you see, and comments and suggestions are always welcome.
I've been fiddling with Izzet Prowess decks in Standard for quite a while, really ever since Monastery Slow.... I mean Soul-Scar Mage dropped months ago, but the deck never seemed to have enough horsepower. But when Wizard's Lightning got spoiled with the Dominaria leaks, I knew this could put it over the top, and when the rest of the set was revealed, well, why don't I just show you.
The key to a good Prowess deck is explosiveness, and the fear that engenders in your opponent. Blocking against a good Prowess deck is always a gamble, because you never know whether you are going to get blown out by something like Run Amok or take a Lightning Strike to the face and then lose your blocker to the Prowess pump. Even removal gets sketchy with spells like Dive Down around. But Standard just didn't have the oomph until two Legendary creatures and one tribal-matters burn spell came down the pipe:
Adeliz, the Cinder Wind. Imagine this curve: T1 Soul-Scar Mage, T2 attack, let the opponent assume you have some gas in your hand, then cast Spellweaver Eternal (a tragically underappreciated card IMHO) instead. T3 attack and have 3 mana up for whatever shenanigans you want, deal somewhere between 5-8 damage, perhaps more, but make sure you keep a 1-mana spell in hand. T4 drop Cinder Wind, attack, throw a WizBolt or a Shock, get a double trigger and have a 3/3 flyer, 4/3 Afflict 2, and a 3/4.
Naru Meha, Master Wizard. Now consider this: attack with Cinder Wind and another Prowess creature. Cast Run Amok, then in response flash in Naru and copy the pump spell, targeting the other creature. That gives you a 7/7 flying trample and a 8 or 9 power trampler on the ground. Or just copy a burn spell and either take down two blockers or deal 4-6 to the face.
As for the rest of the deck, we have Enigma Drake as our one non-wizard creature. But in a deck like this it is amazing; a 4-toughness blocker on turn 3 and then an evasive threat that could easily have 6-8 power in the late game. Chart a Course may look odd, being a sorcery speed draw spell, but in a deck that wants to attack each turn or filter away extra lands with the discard, it makes a lot of sense to draw 2 for 2.
Sideboard: Of course we have Wizard's Retort, duh. Nimble Obstructionist comes in to Stifle things like Scarab God activations, Magma Spray to deal with recursive threats, and Abrade for those annoying GPGs. Sweltering Suns may look odd, but all we need is a second Prowess trigger and nearly all of our creatures can survive 3 damage.
Hopefully you are entertained. I've tested this deck with proxies for the DOM cards and it can be crazy explosive, so I can't wait to try it at FNM against some live opponents. If you like what you see, please upvote, and I always appreciate feedback.
