MH1 UPDATE!

So with the release of Modern Horizons there have been the biggest meta shifts I think Modern has ever seen. First, we got War of the Spark which introduced some very playable pieces across the board. This includes Card: Narset, Parter of Veils who is really good at shutting down Looting effects while also providing a way to find gas, and Dreadhorde Arcanist who is practically a red Snapcaster Mage.

Next, Modern Horizons gave us a bunch new stuff, including a brand new graveyard deck (gross). Unfortunately, Force of Negation is just a fact of life in this format now, meaning against control our game just got worse as Spell Pierce isn't relevant any longer against that match up. So what do we do?

I've added 2x Force of Negation in place of some other, less relevant stuff. This helps us just get out of tight spots and protect our creatures if something would set our tempo back too great. This helps against red board wipes planeswalkers that would destroy us. Then, I've also added two CARD: Lava Dart. I used to have 3, but in a deck that doesn't run Faithless Looting, 3 isn't really optimal. Instead, if I have nothing better to play I can play this for now, dig for bolts after, and recur it later when I have too many lands and just short of lethal. The sideboard has seen the largest change. Gone is Cavalcade of Calamity, and gone are any additional creatures. Ideally, I want to change the spells I have so I can better react to a game plan.

So what's the new game plan? Well, I've removed Arcanists; reason being that if I have a creature that needs to wait for value, I want it to be Delver of Secrets  . Probably the most powerful one-drop creature in the deck, this can represent 3 damage with great evasion on board turn 2, where I can continue to play Swiftspear and use a dig spell or burn spell to get ahead on damage. This is awesome ramp in our tempo, and the benefit of playing this card cannot be ignored. On the flip side, Dreadhorde Arcanist is a 2-drop with a very powerful effect that does exactly nothing for me if it gets removed. For that reason, I'm choosing to cut it entirely for the moment, waiting for a perfect opportunity to add it to the board again.

Snapcaster Mage is an obvious inclusion here; if I could afford more copies, I would as it's easily the best card in the deck. Have you ever Snapped a Force and paid the alternative cost? Yeah, feels good man. Other than that, it's an awesome surprise to spring on opponents and a good way to push for addition damage.

Force of Rage is a card im kind of thinking about sticking in the main. I want to see how well it performs over the next little bit, so we'll see.

Can a wizards list finally work in Modern? We shall see. All criticism welcome, I'm fairly new to the format.

Firstly, about card selection:

The neat thing about this deck is the synergy it holds. Since Dreadhorde Arcanist was spoiled I realized that its only real applicable use in Standard is boost spells and combat tricks; I hate combat tricks. So, instead looking at it in the context of Modern format it has many more uses. Are we digging for threats and burn? Recur Serum Visions or Opt . Are we one burn spell short of ending the game? It also recurs Lava Spike in addition to bolts.

Why is this recursion important? Well, the rest of our deck is optimized for low-to-the-ground prowess beaters with decent floors and insane ceilings. Soul-Scar Mage will help cut down massive threats like Primeval Titan , Monastery Swiftspear is an ideal one-drop if we have a burn-heavy hand, and Stormchaser Mage is ridiculously powerful in this context, since it not only has flying, but haste as well. With the recursion provided by Arcanist we're getting free prowess triggers in addition to other effects, such as drawing into burn or hitting face. Red Snappy is my favourite card right now, and slots perfectly into my favourite gimmick.

So far, I believe this is very close to how the final list will look. I'll be updating how this decklist does at local tournaments as I play them, so feel free to follow. I'll keep record of wins and losses in the title. Thanks for reading!
