Xenagos Equal left and rights

Commander / EDH RG (Gruul)

Shadowfox013

The main point of this deck has always been the drug addiction method to get new people into commander. They ramp to 5 mana, play xenagos and continue to throw out high cmc, high damage utility creatures.

Due to this it's very easy for a new player to win their first pod of commander without letting people go easy on them and have fun.

For players that have played magic before there's some obvious lines to run that new players will miss and this is to mostly reward knowledgeable and creative players.

There are high card draw engines to keep the deck out of top deck mode and to help the deck even survive in top deck mode, the deck can go fast and it can go slow. It's truly a mid range Gruul beatdown deck.

The magic number of high cmc creatures to me has always seemed to be about 17-22 depending on the play tested cards at the time. The few lands is because we only need about 3 due to the amount of ramp and tutors to keep the deck going. Since so much of our ramp finds lands we only need to hit about 3 cmc to start really turning online. This is mostly due to we have mana dorks, burst/one time use mana in the case of dockside and tinder wall. We also have free creature into the battlefield tutors with natural order, vivien, monster's advocate, lurking predators, selvayla's stamped, sneak attack and see the unwritten. Due to a lot of these cheats I've found running more lands typically results in a mana flood in the mid-late game since we trim the deck so much as is.
