Alright guys, here it is! A Simic control (non-clue) oriented deck for SoI. This is all thanks to the gorgeous looking card, Altered Ego. As soon as I saw this card I wanted to do something interesting with it. I mean, yeah... I've had a soft spot for U/G for yeeeaars, and I love my old school U/G Madness deck, but I have not really done anything for Simic in quite a while. So this, to me, feel like an homage to that time and experience with U/G Madness.

The general idea with this deck is to control and stall while we wait for things to thaw. Thing in the Ice   is our big beefy guy, but thanks to Altered Ego, we can copy Awoken Horror   for only or make an even bigger one! So sexy! Honestly though, dropping down a 7/7 Thought-Knot Seer copy is also very fun. Tread Upon has been a big help as it allows several of our creatures to swing through silly chump blockers. Can't stop this Ego yo!

Below I'll go over some cards that people have had some questions on.

  • Sylvan Scrying allows us to search for any land, rather helpful for pulling up a Yavimaya Coast or a Sea Gate Wreckage. This can be a huge help to pay for those pesky eldrazi.
  • I feel Fork in the Road is a bit underrated. It not only grabs a land to keep, it also thins the deck out by 2, and can help with delirium (if we side board it in) all for only ! Also.... it looks pretty.
  • Mirrorpool is a rather recent addition to the deck and it's still kind of in play test phase. We'll get back to it later on once we have some more info on how well if preforms.
  • Sometimes you just don't have a counter in hand. This is were Disperse comes in as it allows us a chance to draw into another counter, bounce, and then take care of that difficult card. Can be really helpful as well if people are trying to kill of something of mine that I really might not want them to.
  • Kiora, Master of the Depths... Yeah, alright, I like her in this deck. Like, a lot more that I really should. I really do. She is such and odd duck in this deck, but man, when she gets on the table my opponent almost always either doesn't care or didn't realize she was even around. That is until she is turning the tides. Yeah I know one of the Jace cards would most likely be better, but they aren't and $4 are they? Nope, didn't think so. Therefore, our only conclusions is that Kiora is our planeswalker of choice.

Sideboard is still kind of a work in progress, but after several play tests this is were we are currently at. Most are very self explanatory. Some like Talent of the Telepath were not obvious at first, but it's proven very useful against RDW and heavy instant/sorcery heavy decks.

Thank you all for taking a look at this deck. If you have any thoughts/suggestions please do not hesitate to leave them below, I love to hear what people have to say about it. As well, would be very grateful if you could give it a +1 Upvote.

Last but absolutely not least, a huge shout out to xXPhenomenalXx! He's been a close friend of mine for a very long time. He's been helping me play test this, rebuild it, suggest new cards, play test it again, all on and off for almost 2 weeks. I am super grateful for the help man and I'm hoping it turns some heads in surprise/beauty come FNM!

That turned out better than expected and turned so many heads! Very fun, very exciting,

  • 2-1 vs Eldrazi: Lost the first game, he was just able to keep putting stuff out after it was countered. I never got what was needed. Second game sided boarded in the Glint and Talent of the Telepath due to how much removal he had, and ended up wining without ever drawing into them. Third game was not much different other than Glint saved my Icefall Regent from getting Grasp of Darkness.

  • 2-0 vs Eldrazi: Not much different from the first match up other than we ended up wining both games. The second match was a bit close, but flipped Thing in the Ice  Flip and swung for the win.

  • 2-0 vs R/G Ramp: Oh man, this match up was the most fun of the night, especially since my opponent was rather at a loss of what to do against my deck. First game was pretty standard with slowing things down with counters until he dropped Dragonlord Atarka. Which then good ol' Altered Ego shows up as a 12/12. Next turn popped Mirrorpool and copied that one, which then he ended up scooping. Second game was straight forward other than when I ended up coping his Thunderbreak Regent and he assumed I would be taking 3 to the face from it's ability. However, since Altered Ego does not target the creature, it doesn't proc the ability. He was upset, called a judge over only to have the judge confirm that is how it would play out and ended up scooping 2 turns after.

  • 0-2 vs Aristocrats: This one was boring and sad. First game got manascrewed at 3 lands (2 forest and an island) and he just over ran me. Sided boarded in Displacement Wave to help with some tokens. Second game, never drew into Displacement Wave and he was able to put enough early game pressure that when he transformed his abbey, it was too late even with Icefall Regent locking it down the next turn.

Got a lot of experience out of this and had a blast. Lots of people ended up having questions about the deck since it showed up out of no where! Made me super happy that it did as well as it did and look forwards to seeing where it goes.
