Food Chain Zegana Primer by /u/Killcritetrs Co-Brewer /u/atr0s

Food Chain Zegana is a fast paced combo deck using Food Chain (obviously) with Eternal Scourge or Misthollow Griffin . It has other combos that I will explain later on in the in depth guide.

I came up with the idea for the deck after finding out that U/G Food chain was an actual legacy deck, and pretty much plays out the same way. When Eternal Scourge was spoiled I knew the deck could come into fruition.

The main gameplan is to somehow win with Laboratory Maniac after you cast Zegana enough times to draw your deck. The easiest way of doing that is Food Chain with either Misthollow Griffin or Eternal Scourge.

UG doesn't have any way of tutoring Food Chain outside of Long-Term Plans and Drift of Phantasms so the deck is fueled by many cantrips and draw spells to get you there.

The deck has a bunch of combos and synergies, this part of the guide will go over all of them and how to execute them.

Combos

This is the main combo of the deck. You generate infinite creature specific mana by exiling either of the creatures for mana equal to their CMC +1, then replaying them from exile floating 1 extra mana each iteration. Use this mana to cast Zegana, exile her, and cast her again until you draw your deck. Make infinite mana with Deadeye + Palinchron, and then cast Laboratory Maniac. Use your infinite mana + free counterspells to defend the Maniac, and cast Zegana for a final game winning draw trigger.

Both High Tide and Deadeye Navigator go infinite with Palinchron.

Palichron and High Tide is a bit harder to go off with because you need 6 islands in play, though if you have a Jace, Telepath Unbound that can flash back High Tide it is a lot easier. This combo also requires an outlet to win I.E. Riptide Laboratory or Temur Sabertooth .

Palinchron with Deadeye Navigator is a well known combo that if late game comes you can pull out with a Tooth and Nail entwined.

Synergies

The deck has A LOT of synergies; I will just go over a few here.

Aside from being a win condition, Temur Sabetooth can generate a huge advantage in a longer game with ETB creatures, as well as giving itself protection from destruction effects to ensure it sticks around to combo later.

Casting one of these spells is essentially a tutor for your cast from exile creature, and draws a card in the process. The ability of the Griffin and Scourge turns these normally weak cards into efficient tutors that replace themselves. Do not be afraid to use them aggressively and exile both creatures, that's right where you want them, and removes relatively weak draws from the deck.

Intuition is normally a powerful tutor that can grab 3 cards that do the same thing, 3 cards that contribute to your plan, or in 60 card formats, just 3 of the same card. The graveyard recursion effects make it able to search out and put in your hand exactly what you want in a singleton format as well! Find both of them, and whatever other card you need at the time. Expect to be given Eternal Witness, and use it to get back the card you really wanted.
