You F*cked with Squirrels, Morty!

Commander / EDH* Mono-Green

Forceofnature1

Commander (1)

Commander: Chatterfang, Squirrel General

Just like the title says- you f*cked with Squirrels, Morty!

Bent on world domination, this deck doesn't take kindly to being f*cked with.

Intro:

I am excited to finally put together squirrel tribal! I pulled a foil full art copy of Chatterfang and decided it was time to have some fun. Chances are this deck is going to take a few different shapes before I am done with it.

First Build- Stuff I have. Theme- token swarm and life gain/drain.

First up is a build I put together with just stuff I have already. I looked at a few lists and the general theme is token generation shenanigans, which can go a few different ways. My main goal with this deck is to use it at a big table for multiplayer games. I wanna take over the world. That means max impact on all players not focusing on just one.

For now the mechanics are simple- maximizing my token generation so that my commander can shine. Thankfully he has a low cmc as I am not running my usual protection suite of artifacts. That was a purposeful choice. For this build I specifically tried to play with cards I don't use in other decks already, as a design limitation/challenge.

I also made specific choices to lean towards thematic cards vs efficiency. The theme is bonus tokens. There is a lifegain/drain subtheme that I think is the board finisher, and a few ways to get to a boardstate that I hope will keep things fresh.

Notable Cards:

These are cards that I either hope will shine, have seen shine and do massive work, or that I just love the flavor on and want to remember for later.

I tried to build this similar to an EDH precon from back in the day. We have the vengeful Chatterfang leading the pack, but we also have a few legendary creatures that could work as well. Beledros Witherbloom is the main general under my commander. With his built-in token generation he is on theme if I did want to slot him in and use Chatterfang as a hidden general. Sheoldred, the Whispering One and Old Gnawbone make up the other two (2) lieutenants in the deck. If they had Partner they could easily make this deck difficult.

Gameplan

Early game: I have lots of low cmc removal to disrupt tempo of everyone else, but for this deck I am keeping my removal for situations where people try to swing at me. I am not sure how important early game threat removal will be, but I know I do not want to go around picking fights. This deck is largely about responding with a nightmare scenario of squirrels once provoked. I have a bunch of lower cmc enchantments and creatures that seem fairly innocuous on their own. The goal here is to get some little boosts to card draw and mana ramping, but not make myself a serious threat too quickly. One thing to note- I typically run a ton more ramp in a green deck but since this deck has a treasure sub theme I am hoping that can help me stay under the radar.

Mid game: Once my commander lands then we see what the board looks like. Priority of attack goes to anyone who directly provoked me, but you want to be clear that anything that hurts the group should be blamed on that provocation. Feel free to say "you shouldn't have f*cked with squirrels, so and so" to the individual or entire table.

End game: Not sure how quickly I can amass a squirrel army, but once I do, there is no mercy. (oooo that reminds me I should put No Mercy in here). We'll see what the win cons end up being, but obviously Craterhoof Behemoth is one of them. Probably the main one right now, but as the deck progresses I will want to use him as a backup if games drag on. Winning by tutoring for craterhoof is only fun so many times.
