Welcome to the Primal Calamity!

The main star of this deck is Zacama, Primal Calamity herself. She is a 9/9 with vigilance, trample, and reach. Her ETB effect allows me to untap all of my lands, so I practically get to cast her for free. She also has three abilities: 2C 1 Green- Destroy target artifact/enchantment, 2C 1 Red- Zacama deals 3 damage to target creature, and 2C 1 White- Gain 3 life.

The main focus of this deck is to ramp as early as possible to cast Zacama, Primal Calamity and begin to take control over the battlefield.

Before I start to further explain my strategies to grab the win, here are a few cards that deserve to be in the spotlight:

  • Illusionist's Bracers- allows me to choose another target with Zacama’s abilities
  • Zirda, the Dawnwaker- cuts the cost of Zacama’s abilities by 2
  • Sunbird's Invocation- Whenever I cast something from my hand, I reveal the top X (equal to CMC of the card) and put a card less than or equal to X into play without paying for it.
What I want to do with this deck is to ramp up enough to be able to start playing some key components. This is actually the most important part to ensure that my deck synergizes perfectly.

These are two of my favorite sorcery ramp cards because they allow me to not only get a basic Forest but they allow me to get cards like: Cinder Glade and Scattered Groves into play without having them enter tapped.

Dryad allows me to play two lands cards each turn and each land is every mana color. Sakura is honestly a very underrated card and is my absolute favorite creature ramp card.

A great way to cheat out Zacama is to wait until the opponent before you ends their turn and flash out Dictate of Karametra so that you will untap with it (and since it’s a ‘group hug’ card, your opponents may not even bother countering it). Cast Zacama (have 1 extra mana in your pool), create some fun chaos to your opponents’ boards and then have just enough mana to destroy it so that your opponents can’t fully utilize the enchantment. Mirari’s Wake gives my creatures +1/+1 and Zendikar Resurgent allows me to draw a card whenever I cast a creature.

Keeper allows everyone to double up on mana if they tap a mountain, plains, or forest. She’s a great asset to have in this deck because I will be able to tap any of my basic lands or specialty lands (Land- MountainForest, Forest/Plains) while my opponents might not even get to. Regal is great because it introduces Monarch into the game but its mana doubler effect is only valid if I am the Monarch.

Zacama is perfect for either of these cards because you get to draw 9 cards off of her and this almost guarantees drawing into your key components. The sacrifice outlet is a minor setback but with the amount of ramp earlier on, you would still have enough mana to just bring her back and then be able to play a good portion of the cards you drew off of her.

  • Illusionist's Bracers + Zacama, Primal Calamity I can copy her abilities multiple times and clear the way for Zacama to hit my opponents with some commander damage.
  • Zirda Dawnwaker/Heartstone + Zacama, Primal Calamity These cards will reduce the cost of her abilities by either one (Heartstone) or by two (Zirda). This will allow me to boardwipe and still have plenty of mana available.
  • Mirari's Wake or any other mana doubler + Temur Sabertooth + Zacama, Primal Calamity I tap 1C and 1 Green to bring Zacama back to my hand. I recast Zacama to untap all of my lands and with the mana doubler I will have 1 extra floating mana. Then if Illusionist's Bracers is reattached to Zacama, I am able to start to take control over the board state.
  • These are the main combos that I have enjoyed playing with and I have completely crippled someone’s entire gameplan without even swinging out with Zacama.
I hope that you all enjoy the decklist and please comment below if you have any further suggestions on how to make this decklist better.

Updates Add

I’ve taken out Reliquary Tower, Mossfire Valley, Sungrass Prairie, and a few mountains/plains. And I added Evolving Wilds, Ash Barrens, Brushland, Karplusan Forest, Cinder Glade, Gruul Turf, Naya Panorama, Rootbound Crag, Scattered Groves, and Selesnya Sanctuary.

I’m thinking of switching out Mana Reflection with Mana Flare due to the fact that Mana Flare is the cheaper and will do practically the same thing as Mana Reflection.
