I absolutely love seeing all of the opinions and advice in these threads... anyone active that sees this wanna teach a noob how to spelltable?

I think before I started watching all of these videos and really looking into the decklists, I never realized:

1) How important the mana curve/land base is, and

2) how costly certain lands remain even after they rotate out of standard.

I have obviously been undervaluing and not recognizing the importance of a solid land base.

I do think this deck is good but it seems it would be much more difficult to pilot than some/most of the other budget decks that were in the KTK standard video series from the professor.

I have not yet played Sultai in any format... it just feels like an awkward color combo to me. I probably can't see deeply enough into the strategies yet.

Mortlocke, thanks for the response! I'm new to all of these forums and such as well and wasn't actually expecting responses on these older threads! I appreciate your reply, and I'll give that a shot. Currently I'm only familiar with MTG Goldfish, Archidekt, and Tapped Out. I use the MTG Dragonshield app to database my own collection and decklists.

What are the win conditions of this deck?

I have not yet piloted an Abzan deck. For whatever reason, the overall strategy does not seems as natural to me. I guess I sort of lose focus on what the goal is while choosing which cards to play? Idk. Aggro is simple. I guess I'm having a hard time finding the balance of midrange.

Even though this is an old deck that is no longer standard legal, I enjoyed seeing the strategy and decision-making process on how to select specific replacements for budget builds. Especially appreciated the idea of substituting a Planeswalker for something that is similar to what would be their most used action. It seems that a lot of times Planeswalkers are removed before you can get off their big hits anyway! Thanks!

As someone late to the party that is Magic... did The Professor say what he IS using these days?

I know I'm about 10 years behind here, but just reading all of the explanation and opinion on this thread has blown my mind. I've seen a lot of Tron deck stuff but haven't piloted one myself yet and I feel like there are so many subtle things that I'm not even aware of yet. I wish I had more people to play with and practice against!

Also, small side note, I think there is a typo in the deck description before the link where the author said its for a Mono Black deck.

Thank you to Mangetsu_Tatsumasa2280 for the Amulet of Vigor recommendation. I'm currently building an EDH deck that has a ton of lands that enter tapped and was curious as to what options exist to potentially decrease that burden a bit.

I appreciate this thread because I had been trying to learn where the name 8-rack came from and now I know. Haha

Does anyone know why this is called 8 rack? Kind of surprised it wasn't explained in the video. Or maybe I missed it?

I was introduced to EDH first and then standard, but I really think modern may end up being my favorite format.

I haven't had an opportunity to play an infect deck yet but this seems so fun. I wish there was a better modern scene where I live. I'm going to have to start teaching people to play once I learn more so that we can get a community going in my town.

Here I am 10+ years after this was made learning about Merfolk decks for the first time. Haha
