Most of my decks on TappedOut are theorycrafting, seeing how a card interaction works or just messing around. I like grindy attrition decks, usually in some variation of --Turbofog, Lantern Control, discard, that sort of thing. Resource denial is a way of life. I also have a soft spot for Dredge and recursion.

Creature types that need more support: Bat, Plant, Scorpion, Shaman, Skeleton

Never forget what it's like to be a noob!

Oh god no.

I was going to write you a note to ask you not to upvote any of my decks.

Whoops, too late.

It actually harms my average.

Oh well. If this ever happens again I’ll have to remember to do that.

legendofa since you asked politely, I upvoted all of your decks that I could see.

It was a fun activity.

Your decks all have terrific names, and original ideas.

It is no wonder that you are number 3 on this site.

Crow_Umbra just so that you know, you can do a direct link to one of your decks.

Just write [ [your-deck-name] ] but without any spaces.

Like this Boros Puppies

Which is [ [boros-puppies] ] without any spaces.

Caran_Lyg No problem! Always glad to help. I'd personally nominate Gidgetimer as another person to check with rulings questions. And, of course, there's the Rules Q&A forum.

For Solphim, Mayhem Dominus and Torbran, Thane of Red Fell, basically one applies to the original damage and the other applies to that modified damage. Whoever's taking the damage, or its controller, chooses which one's which. Technically, it's sequential replacement effects. So for example, if you Lightning Bolt an opponent or a creature they control, that opponent can choose whether Torbran's effect happens before Solphim or the other way around. If they choose Torbran to work first, they will take (3 + 2) x 2, or 10 damage. If they choose Solphim to work first, they take (3 x 2) + 2, or 8 damage. (I changed the example from Shock because it ends up at 8 damage either way with Shock.)

The general rule here (paraphrasing 616.1) is that if there are two or more replacement effects acting on the same thing, the player (or the permanent's controller) who's affected by the original thing is the one who decides what happens.

Hey bro. I apologize for posting on your wall, many users here say either you or wallisface are the 2 people to ask about rulings on cards. If I cast, for example, Shock while I have both Solphim, Mayhem Dominus and Torbran, Thane of Red Fell on the field, will Torbran’s and Solphim’s ability trigger each other? I know Torbran doesn’t produce that 2 additional damage that his effect produces, it comes from Shock and since it’s a red source, I wonder if the 2 damage from Torbran’s effect is also considered a red source, if it is then it should trigger Solphim’s effect.

Whenever a nontoken creature you control enters, if you don't control a creature with soulbond, you may put a soulbond counter on it. (You may pair that creature with another unpaired creature when either enters. They remain paired for as long as you control both of them.)

Paired creatures you control have indestructible.

Okay, I'll take a look into this and see if I can work something out.

October 14, 2024 10:58 p.m.

Bookrook That second one feels a little too black. Sabotaging someone for personal gain (safety from the hounds) might be there on an individual basis, but not as a society-wide thing. Those people would also be fed to the trial champions pretty quickly.

I was thinking about ways to make green more visible here, and it needs something nature-y. I was specifically leaning hard into the philosophical side of the most physical color, and that probably undersold it.

This is kind of a fantasy twist: but:

  • There are no libraries, churches, or formal schools in Sheraul City. Education and knowledge is passed around as needed, which is usually restricted to specialized knowledge needed to perform one's duties.

This restricts the accessibility of blue and black, and kind of pulls down white. Work is performed through informal education and gut feeling, two green traits.

  • The streets of the city are unpaved and irregular. Most of the paths are cut and tamped down by generations of boots, wagon wheels, and hooves. They meander from building to building and around obstacles like trees and large boulders. City planning only extends to convenience and accessibility; buildings are placed when and where they are needed with little regard for symmetry or pattern.

This creates a system of organic growth and brings in the presence of nature. It promotes non-interference and respect for the natural world. It's also kind of a weird detail, but green doesn't tend to have strong views on society as a whole as long as nature is respected and everyone knows their place.

October 13, 2024 11:47 p.m.

Bookrook That's an interesting idea. 30% might be a bit high--I think something like 10% would be enough, and even that might be a little high. Any more and the society would risk eating itself, and green-white should be more about expansion or at least stasis, rather than contraction. The culling shouldn't remove more people than can be replaced. I like the thought of weakness-detecting dogs.

Fusion of Consume Strength and Infest.

Let's make a little story out of these. Assuming that Sam's the one killing the zombies here, make a card with art that shows zombies about to ambush or surround a wary but unprepared Sam.

October 7, 2024 2:40 p.m.

Caerwyn My take on that angle is that this is the first time when WotC has directly stated that one card may be more competitive or less fun than another. Sure, nobody's going to use Shock in a match when Lightning Bolt, Play with Fire, and so many other cards exist. And WotC has also freely said that some cards are strictly better than others. But this is the first time that direct measures and comparisons of competitiveness have been made between cards and decks.

As far as I know, WotC has never sat down with a bunch of Modern decks or whatever, ran them against each other, then specifically said that for the next six months, Boros Energy will be a high Tier 1 deck because it has Amped Raptor, Gruul Hardened Scales will be low Tier 1, Dredge is Tier 2, and Dinosaurs is Tier 3. In fact, they've kind of done the opposite with bans and counterplay tech to reduce the amount of striation. They've collected and reported tournament results, but this is the first time that they've openly planned to set a boundary between "competitive" and "casual", or "high power" and "low power" or however it's ultimately going to be broken down. Modern, Standard, Pioneer, Brawl, Vintage, none of those formats have attempted to give cards an objective score from one to four stars on competitve and fun axes. And that's what they're about to do with (how many?) cards.

At this point, I think it's at least worth trying and seeing what happens, but I think it's not entirely accurate to say that this isn't a new reality. The new reality isn't the striations themselves, it's trying to objectively rank (a few? some? lots of?) cards within those striations.

Okay, looks like some of my questions got almost answered.

https://mtginsider.com/mtg-commander-power-bracket/

This has a link to an hour-long video I don't have the time and focus for right now, but to summarize the summary:

Not every card will be bracketed. Some cards, like Thassa's Oracle and friends, will be bracketed based on their combo power instead of face value strength. Other cards will be bracketed based on "fun-ness". Stax, prison, MLD, and similar effects will probably be in bracket 3-4. Your deck's power level is equal to the highest individual card power level. Unbanning cards is possible, but not yet confirmed. No further cards are expected to be banned.

Moving into personal opinion, cards I'd like to see unbanned that I don't think will break anything too much:

October 5, 2024 4:56 p.m.

I know (or assume, or hope) that these questions will be answered, but I haven't seen anything that says what tier a deck is in if it has a mix of cards from different tiers. If it has like sixty tier 2 cards, thirty-eight tier 3 cards, and two tier 4 cards, how does that compare to a deck that's only tier 3? Will the tiers be subdivided to make a more continuous spectrum (High tier 2 vs low tier 3), or is it more discrete?

Is every tier 3 card considered to be equal and superior to every tier 2 card in all circumstances, or will combos and synergy be considered?Demonic Consultation and Tainted Pact are high-risk and not especially efficient tutors by themselves, but killer combo pieces with Thassa's Oracle. Can a tier 2 deck run Tainted Pact, assuming that it's a tier-4 card?

Will every card be tiered, or will each tier have a few representative cards, and the rest be assigned ad hoc? The first option would take forever and be incredibly arbitrary, while the second option doesn't resolve anything.

This, to me, is too loose and subjective to cover all but the broadest scenarios. Unfortunately, I can't say I have a better idea. Most people don't want to discuss power levels for half an hour before playing, and any discrete ranking system will necessarily be at least somewhat arbitrary and overly inclusive.

Femme_Fatale No. I guess I didn't report back a couple months ago, but I didn't notice anything happening with the foramt section. I just tried again a few seconds ago. Specifically, I set an old hub (Flip) to certain formats (Standard, Legacy, Pauper, and Vintage), then changed the deck I use to check hub updates to a format that wasn't one of the allowed formats. I was still able to pick the Flip hub when my test deck was set to Casual and Oathbreaker, and search for Commander decks in the deck search with the Flip hub. (I undid all changes to the hub, so it's back to the way it was.) Other changes take effect as soon as they're saved, so I agree that it doesn't seem to do anything.
