But what exactly does it protect in this list? Since if you hold priority and play Extirpate on top of a spell (let's say Adnaus), the control player can just let Extirpate resolve first and then respond to Adnaus.

Can you elaborate how Extirpate works as a "black counterspell"? I guess it involves Split Second somehow, but I'm just not seeing it.
