No. When a trigger, such as the one on this card, starts resolving, it will resolve in-full before anyone gets any chance to make any other actions.

You can tap your lands before it resolves, or afterwards, but not during. No land will untap more than once each turn from this cards ability.

Grindstones activation will entirely resolve before other abilities are added to the stack.

Effectively, Grindstone will put the entire opponents library into their graveyard. And then Kozilek, Butcher of Truth will trigger and shuffle all of those cards back into their library. The game continues.

The answer is yes. Cards without a mana cost, such as lands, have a mana value of 0.

For what its worth, i went through the modern banlist and made a list of cards i’d rather see unbanned because they’d be less toxic than Uro (note this doesn’t mean i actually want any of these unbanned, just that i think they’d be less broken).

Icbrgr i’m aware legacy is a different format, but it was used as a reference to the sheer power of this card in the context of considering it for other formats.

I have tried to articulate my points as best I can. I see absolutely zero valid reasons for an unban of this card.

November 4, 2024 4:08 p.m.

You can stack the triggers whichever way you want. BUT, Cowardice is not a may ability, and will always return the creature back to your hand, whether the opponent pays 4 life or not.

Parnesse, the Subtle Brush is effectively doing nothing in this interaction, as whatever option the opponent chooses there, Cowardice is still going to trigger. As Cowardice is not a may ability, your opponent also has no reason to ever pay the 4 life, as it achieves nothing.

Icbrgr i’d put money on one-ring not surviving the December bans (though I also thought it’d be gone before now).

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Boros Energy pivoted into 4-colour to run Uro instead-of (or alongside) Phlage.

I get that you really want to play with this card, but this threads question is “Could Uro come back to Pioneer/Modern?” and the answer is “absolutely not”.

There was once talk of Uro being too strong in Legacy, which has always had the waay more access to options for dealing with it. It still sees play there.

Icbrgr as I just tried to explain before, Uro would be far too strong for Modern.

  • It’s significantly better than the formats current most-played-creature

  • It can more-easily slot into a wider range of decks than that before-mentioned creature.

  • It’s too good.

I don’t see any reasonable case to be made for its unbanning.

legendofa the rules here are just terribly written… and i’m not sure trying to force the current wording to comply with how we all naturally know the game works, is helpful. Your suggestions require a lot of guesswork and filling-in-the-gaps of the rules which ends up reading just as unintuitively as the rules in this space are written.

I think it’s ok here to say that “wotc dropped the ball with these rules”. Luckily, the interaction itself is one players all intuitively understand, so I don’t see it becoming an issue.

There’s mo way it’s coming back.

As comparison, Phlage, Titan of Fire's Fury is the most played creature in modern, by a decent margin, and is significantly worse than Uro.

Uro being unbanned would be immediately format warping and likely make it the most played creature (or close to). All control lists likely replace Phlage with Uro, and I could also see Frog-Oculus lists replacing Oculus with Uro. Beyond that, you’re going to start seeing every deck that can splash to include it, splash to include it.

I agree it’s a strange choice of rules wording on wotc’s part.

November 3, 2024 10:30 p.m.

From reading through this entire section of rules, I think it’s more a case of “unblocked” being the default status through this phase, with the “blocked” condition only being applied when relevant. I think this is why there’s sooo much text around “blocking” but almost none around the inverse. “Unblocked” is just the absence of being “blocked”, and the default condition when being “blocked” hasn’t been met (i.e, during this phase each creature can only be one-or-the-other, not both, and not none).

November 3, 2024 9:10 p.m.

A creature can only be an “unblocked creature” after blockers have been otherwise assigned. In this way, there's no chance for the creatures to become blocked after the case, as the blocking step has already taken place.

Zareth will be unblocked.

Another very rough idea, deliberately not using OneRing as it might be gone in a month, and none of this list makes any sense in a world where it still exists.

If your life total can’t change, you aren’t allowed to pay a cost that includes the payment of any amount of life other than 0 life.

This is specifically covered on Gatherer for the Flare: “If a cost would include causing you to gain life, that cost can't be paid. Similarly, you can't pay a cost that includes the payment of any amount of life other than 0 life. However, you can choose to be dealt damage, even though that damage won't result in your life total changing.”

DemonDragonJ Unless you're jumping through a series of unnecessary hoops, Marshal's Anthem is also a one-time effect.

The purpose of reanimation is typically to present some massive threat early to close-out the game. If you're reanimation targets aren't strong enough to win the game by themselves, then that's another issue entirely.

Chthonian Nightmare is the reanimation spell specifically designed for grindier repeated-reanimation style decks.

Whether you like these cards or not, they are all massively, MASSIVELY stronger than Marshal's Anthem, which I still see no point in playing regardless of what the decks strategy is.

DemonDragonJ I'm not going to look through your various decks, but if you're looking for actually playable reanimation spells, there is Victimize, Animate Dead, Dread Return, Reanimate, Goryo's Vengeancefoil, Persist, Chthonian Nightmare, Unburial Rites, Priest of Fell Rites, etc

This card reads really badly.

4 mana for an anthem effect is terrible

6 mana to reanimate a create is also excessively expensive

Anything good enough to reanimate with this will be unlikely to care about the anthem on the card, meaning this cards effects are at-odds with eachother and don't really play well together.

I think there's a good reason why this card is only worth $0.50. I don't see any use-case for playing it.
