Puzzle Challenge: Overkill

Deck Challenges

TAMA

Here my dear tappedouters I do present to you, for your genuine entertainment, puzzlement, obsessive needs and frustration, a challenge... of a different sort.

The challenge is simple I will present to you a scenario you may come across in a game and you will need to propose a way to win the game given cards that may be in your hand.

The Scenario

Your challenge whether you choose to accept it... You are starting at the beginning, turn zero if you will. You are on the play and have three natural turns in which to kill your opponent. By natural turns I am refering to turns which are not the after effect of spells or activated abilities or triggered abilities. To make things as easy as possible the part of your opponent will be played by a rather stunned looking goldfish. This means that your opponent will be doing nothing to interrupt or intefere with you in anyway (it is safe to assume that your opponent will have a deck of 51 cards by your turn 3).

Base Rules

Your Solution must only use standard legal cards.

You do not have to list an entire deck, only the cards you are using to kill the opponent.

Any cards you draw may be any cards of your choice also.

No penalties will be ascribed for having a Janky deck.

Three solutions per user.

Additional Rules

You maximum deck size will be limited to 61 cards.

You can take no more than an additional three turns.

Infinite combos are strictly prohibited.

For the purposes of this challenge your opponent can only lose the game at the beginning of their untap step.

To enter you simply need to post a prototype deck containing all the cards you intend to use to win and an explanation in the description box. If you do not wish to let others steal your ideas set the deck on private and add me as a confidant so that I may see and judge your solution or send it to my email at [email protected].

In this challenge you will be judged on brutality and creativity. I want to see how many different ways you can mame a goldfish by 3rd turn. The title of the challenge is overkill and I mean that, your opponent may only have 20 life but that doesn't mean you can't drag them down to -200. Show me how much pain you can inflict on your opponent.

Selsenay says... #6

@DrMcmeen: I believe he means that he can only lose at his untap step. The purpose here is that he won't immediately lose once he hits 0 life, allowing players to stack more damage on him (hence the Overkill). As soon as it's his next untap, he loses due to lack of life.

@SocialistElite you can make a better overkill if you swing for the 71 damage first and then sac everything into Viscera Seer thus being able to mill for 176 leaving you with Seer and Demons. Sacing Demon 1 2 & 3 nets another 12, followed by Seer for 2 making a grand total of 190 cards milled.

Congrats though on the overkill

Turn 2: Arid mesa, second lynx, swing for 2

Turn 3: Snap the land, drop lotus cobra, drop another snap land, snap, harrow thrice, world at war and swing with a pair of 18/20 twice for 72 damage

So 74 all up.

Duelist overkill challenge

Opening hand of 1x Kor Duelist 1x Sigil of Distinction 4x Pyretic Ritual 1x plains

Turn one, lay a plains, cast Kor Duelist .

Turn two, draw Mountain , play it, cast 4x ritual, giving you 6 mana, cast sigil for 6. Remove a counter to equip the duelist - now a 6/6 doublestriker. Swing for 12.

Turn three, draw Thunder Strike . Cast it, attack for 16.

Goldfish at - 8.

If this'd been legacy I could have used Dark Ritual and killed him on turn 2 :(

Please people, leave your descriptions and whatnot on your deck's page. If your deck doesn't have a page, it needs one. We don't need to go gumming up the submission list; it makes harder work for TAMA to know what's going on.

@SocialistElite

The only flaw in your plan there is that if the fatestitcher is unearthed, then as soon as it leaves play, by no matter what means, it gets exiled. :(

You'd need to have one played from your hand, then unearth it. Otherwise, your stuck on 31 mana. You just need to have the buggers in your hand, which unfortinatly will reduce the total mana count slightly :)

mordrid311 says... #45

Third submission (and hardest to do). Turn 1. Forest, Birds of Paradise. Turn 2. Lotus Cobra, Scalding Tarn sacced for an Island, Jace's Erasure. Turn 3. Verdant Catacombs sacced for a Forest, Selective Memory away all non lands in your deck, Treasure Hunt mills all his cards. (Yeah u would need like a hundred card deck to do this I know).

August 9, 2010 6:39 p.m.

cardcoin says... #46

@mordrid311

Your major problem with Treasure Hunt is that it 'puts' the cards into your hand. You don't actually 'draw' them. so it doesn't interact with card:Jace's Erasure.

I'm being such a kill joy that I should really try and come up with something lol!

New third submission. Turn 1. Marsh Flats then pass. In opponent's end phase crack the land for a Swamp Archive Trapping yourself on the stack to put 4 Bloodghasts in your graveyard then bringing them out when the land hits. Turn 2. Swamp, Bloodthrone Vampire. Attack for 8. Turn 3. Blade of the Bloodchief attaching to Bloodthrone. Sac the Bloodghasts, play a Marsh Flats, sac the BGs again, crack land for a Swamp, sac BGs again, play 2 Ornithopters and a Pulse Tracker, sac them. Attack for 61. 69 damage by turn 3.

August 9, 2010 9:50 p.m.

mordrid311 says... #50

@s0m_the_wise Isn't that 10 cards by turn 3 when you were on the play turn 1? Wouldn't 9 only have 9 by then?

August 9, 2010 10:25 p.m.

cardcoin says... #51

rofl. Ya know I'm gonna be a killjoy again! :P

Archive Trap only works when your opponent shuffles his/her library.

Also, you can't play an instant in the middle of a spell/effect resolving.

Thus you need to complete the search for your land and put it into play before the Archive Trap can be played. Now, isn't there a card that shuffles both libraries?... And damnit, couldn't Archive Trap be worded target player, instead off opponent? :)

August 9, 2010 10:36 p.m.

shaistyone says... #52

Actually, Archive Trap is searches, not shuffles. I use it in mine above.

August 9, 2010 10:50 p.m.

cardcoin says... #53

Well, when you search your library, don't you shuffle afterwards? :P :)

Thanks for the correction. But my point still stands... your Opponent NEEDS to do the searching. NOT you. :P

@mordrid311 yeah i wasn't sure about 3 draws or 2 if it is only 2 draws it drops my damage by 16 to 58 by dropping a spare harrow.

Also some clarification, are extra turns allowed through the casting of Time Warp and so on? I was somewhat confused with the "3 natural turns" part of the rules and i took it to mean no extra turns were allowed but looking at some of these crazy combo decks it appears i was wrong.

Sorry to be absent for a period of time my internet is playing havoc.

Three natural turns means NO ADDITIONAL TURNS. You may take additional turns i.e through emrakul but no additional mill/damage or effects will be taken into account. Sorry Blueclay, your solution was otherwise elegant.

Submissions will close on the 19th of august at midnight EST. I should have results by the 21st. This should give people enough time to adjust to the no extra turns enforcement.

Solutions must be standard legal Type 2.

For solutions like the one posted by Blueclay you may only use a 15 card standard legal sideboard for the cards you fetch.

What I mean by the Goldfish can only lose during their untap step is that they will not die until you pass the turn to them.

August 13, 2010 10:26 p.m.

You maximum deck size will be limited to 61 cards.

You can take no more than an additional three turns."

@Tama: So it goes =) To reiterate, then, we CAN take up to three additional turns via such things as Magosi, the Waterveil or Time Warp as long as they go on the stack during our three turn "eu naturale," but under no circumstances are we to take more than 6 turns?

ok last post, seriously lol.

i finished my 3rd and last deck for this challenge:

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/goldfish-challenge-win-ghandi-style/

my plains arent listed because the system thinks 52 plains are just "oh so too much" so just pretend i have that many plains.

i end up winning in technically 2 and a half turns and i end up having 228 life (not a typo)

I wish this wasn't only standard...

Turn 1: Lotus Petal Swamp

Tap the Swamp for a Dark Ritual . Play Entomb on Phage the Untouchable . Use the other two black mana to Exhume her.

Sac the Lotus Petal for one white to play card:Angel's Grace.

Turn 2: Island

Play Distortion Strike on Phage the Untouchable and WIN!

or houmbus you can make it less complex and just do: turn 1: Lotus Petal Swamp turn 2: Mountain , then sac Lotus Petal and Mountain for Pyretic Ritual to have 3 red mana, then Swamp for [dark ritual]] for 3 black mana, and Dark Ritual again for a total of 5 black mana, tap 7/8 for Phage the Untouchable turn 3: attack with Phage the Untouchable

that way you don't need to worry with angel's grace. to bad for you though that it's standard. although you gave me the idea i should use Pyretic Ritual couple times

like: turn 1: Mountain , Llanowar Elves turn 2: put down a 2nd mountain, use 2 mountains for Pyretic Ritual four times for a total of 6 red mana, tap Llanowar Elves for 1 green mana

then do whatever from there i guess

@Everyone who can't read: I am tired of seeing people that can't read the rules regarding this challenge. This page is filled with problems that the following should clear up:

"Your Solution must only use standard legal cards."

This means no Dark Ritual , no Phage the Untouchable , no Lotus Petal , etc.

"To enter you simply need to post a prototype deck containing all the cards you intend to use to win and an explanation in the description box."

This means that you should be creating a deck using that handy deck-builder tool and posting a link to it, not posting your solutions in their entirety in the challenge itself. That crap is going to be hard for TAMA to understand and read and judge.

about lotusreport's deck: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/i-had-to-use-scientific-notation/

Sorry, but the rules said 3 natural turns, no cards cause you to have more then 3 turns.

@zigkid3

Quoting the rules: "You can take no more than an [sic] additional three turns."

As far as I can see, lotusreport only gets two additional turns, not even hitting the limit of the challenge.
