Wonderful ideas folks! The Design Team had a blast arguing about things this time around.

Sorok is a land of vast mountains, lush valleys, rushing rivers and large lakes.

Creatures of Sorok

Dwarves

Dwarves are the major power in Sorok. Their wizards and artisians use the gems and materials gathered by the miners to make powerful equipment. Dwarves are known to be stubborn, loyal, a bit ponderous, and resolute. Dwarves live in the mountains they are born from, having vast underground cities. Dwarven nomads search the tunnels for rareties and treasures, while Dwarven scouts keep an eye the other races.

Goblins

Not your average goblins by any means, the Goblins of Sorok are actually somewhat intelligent and restrained, if a bit out there. They have wizards and artisans that use pilfered materials to make equipment that is well, a bit risky. Their settlements are normally in the valleys, with tall (if shaky) homes. Goblin advisors are selected from the most intelligent of the tribes and mostly try and rein in the more outlandish ideas of the others.

Merfolk

The Merfolk of Sorok inhabit the deep clear lakes of Sorok using the rivers as fast transportation (at least downhill). While not as numerous as the Dwarves or Goblins, the Merfolk are well versed in the control magics and hold their own in the rare conflicts.

Noggles

Noggles are the red headed stepchild of Sorok. Living near the Goblins, they tend to be the pranksters, rabble-rousers, and thieves of the societies.

Birds

Birds are abundant in Sorok, both large and small. Everything from eggs to rocs in the high reaches.

Drakes

Drakes make their homes in the mountains and caves. Some drakes have been known to be raised from the egg by adventurous goblin riders.

Griffins

Griffins are one the major predators in Sorok, and have mostly driven the drakes off the high reaches. While not sentient, the Griffins are highly intelligent and serious in manner.

Themes/Keywords/Mechanics.

The major themes and keywords of Sorok are : Bounce, Colored Non-Creature Artifacts and Equipment, Counter-spelling, Double Strike, Flying, Haste, Legends, Resolve, and Vigilance.

Clamp has been renamed Resolve (Spells, counters, or abilities cannot change this creature’s power and toughness from their printed values)

Planeswalker Challenge!

The challenge this time is to come up with the Planeswalker for Sorok.

1) Your card must be a mythic rare planeswalker.

2) Since Sorok's colors are blue, red, and white, your card must have only these three colors anywhere on the card. Green and Black are not allowed. However, your planeswalker's colors can be any combination of the allowed colors (only blue, only red, only white, blue and red, blue and white, red and white, or all three).

Each person is allowed to submit a maximum of THREE cards. Cards will be judged based on the three F's (adapted from Wizards):

  1. Fair : Is the card too overpowered? Is the card too weak for its rarity (in this case mythic rare)? We're looking for a balance between these two things.

  2. Flavorful : Does the card seem to fit in with the story and themes of Sorok? Can a player envision what the card represents without any knowledge of the setting to which it belongs? We're looking for a card that both fits into the existing setting, but that can be fleshed out.

  3. Fun : Is there a level of excitement that the card creates for the player? Is the card boring to play against? Cards should be especially fun for the player casting them, but we also don't want to create a set of cards that opponents hate to play against.

Deadline for submissions is Friday, December 24th, 2010 at 11:59pm EST - That's right, Christmas Eve!

This article is a follow-up to Ulgris Winners and Sorok Brainstorm The next article in this series is Sorok Planeswalker Voting

R/B/G, Wisedwarfmanbrodude!

+1, Attach an equipment you control to a creature you control.

+1, Return an equipment card to it's owner's hand.

-7, Search your deck for any number of Equipment cards, and you may put them into play.

Starting loyalty, 4, which would make the earliest possible -7 without a turn one mana ramp play be turn six. I picked that number right away because a shard with BOUNCE as a theme should have little issue dealing with a permanent in the space of three turns notice, even without considering red burn spells. Obviously combating it with creatures would be harder than usual because it can stick your enemies equipment back in their hand to slow down their aggro onto it, but I do not see that being an issue, and if it is, it could just start at 3 instead.

Barrus, Dur Artisan 2RUW

Planeswalker-Barrus

+2: Sacrifice one artifact you control. Then, cast one Equipment spell from your hand or graveyard.

-2: Remove target equipment from target creature.

-8: Destroy all artifacts on the battlefield. Then, put into play all artifacts in your hand and graveyard. Attach them to creatures you control without paying their equip costs.

Starting Loyalty: 5

Should the last ability cost 7? Is the second underpowered or overpowered?

Karen, Merfolk Debator 1WU

Planeswalker - Karen

+2: Return one permanent you control and one permanent you don't control to their owners' hands.

-1: Exile target permanent. That card is returned to its owner's control at the beginning of his or her next End Step.

-5: You gain two emblems with "Remove this emblem from yourself: Counter target spell."

Starts with 3.

Might be overpowered - I've never been the best judge of power levels. I like the concept of the ultimate. Doesn't really portray the red of Sorok, but I figure 2/3 isn't too bad.

Can be adapted as needed.

(+2) Adam deals 4 damage to target creature.

(-1) Untap target Artifact, creature or land.

(-8) You get an emblem with Creatures you control have Vigilance and (tap) this creature deals damage equal to its toughness to target creature or player.

Starting Loyalty (3)

My thoughts

The name is mostly a joke and idk if we change it.

Casting cost of 4 is mostly standard

The first ability is essentially Flame Slash at +2 thought this was a nice plus ability a little underpowered (as a +2 should be)

The second ability I had a hard time with, Its almost exactly a Infuse minus the draw but the draw portion of infuse is just card replacement more than card gain so I think dropping it was key.

The 3rd ability basically gives all your creatures triple-strike... so sick! But it does take 4 turns to pull off so I dont think its over powered.

Sorok, the mountain strider 2(R)(R)

+1 Target creature gets islandwalk

-10 Player gets an emblem that for the rest of the game allows all creatures player controls to have haste, doublestrike, and when an equipped creature is put into graveyard you may attach equipment to new target creature you control.

(Islandwalk is ok right? its evergreen?)

-9: Put an Emblem into play that states: "Whenever you play an Equipment card from your hand, its equip cost becomes 0 until the end of turn"

I can envision the Emblems as gems that he gives out. Also I originally designed him to start at 9, but I thought a one-shot plainswalker would be a bad idea. +I have no idea what "gems" would be in the set so those effects can be mixed around to fit correctly.

Just wanted to point out that I see several entries which give a creature type to their planeswalker. Also some very Sorok-specific stuff(in terms of creature type, and abilities). Still good and useful. It's just that, flavor-wise, to me that seems more like a Legendary Creature than a planeswalker.

I wanted to hear from the design team about that. You guys will be picking the top 10. Do you want cards like that? Or are you looking for planewalkers that would have more universal usage as Magic Cards?

Or do you just want to leave it wide open and see what you get? I've still got 2 more entries to make if I want, so I was curious.

Post #14. Man that was innovative! All zero cost abilities. Never thought of that. Very out of the box, and also it's the planeswalker equivalent of Resolve. Clever.

Btw, I don't know if anyone else thinks this, but I'm starting to find that the word "resolve" keeps making me initially think of the other MTG usage of the term. "When the spell resolves..." This may pass, I don't know.

Erudin, Seer of Sorok seems good and the ultimate on Tiana, Merfolk Witch of Sorok is WOW factor (but out of flavor name wise.)Basically those 2 are the only ones I would vote for, I believe alot of you are missing the 3 Fs. Also Many + abilities are overpowered or underfun guys! Yeah the + is there to motivate you toward the ultimate AND be relevant flavorwise. Also take into account how many turns it will take to go ultimate! LOTS of good abilities on the above walkers, but alot of near-sighted Nissa type walkers. Also think about back story, why is this person a walker and why here? Jezerail is a goblin who was a slave to a dwarven treasure raid team leader. One day in a confrontation with a rival goblin treasure salvager, Jezerail jumped in front of an attack to save what looked like her long lost bother Krushle. Instead of dying her spark was ignited.

@kickingcloud007 With what you said about adding backstories and why they're there I'm sure many of the entries would have done so had it been necessary and as fun as it is to be the vorthos, capturing the flavour in the rules of a card adds more of a... Yeah, flavour to the game. The second F in the rules (Flavour) I'm guessing has less to do with the storywriting aspect and more of whether the card rules feel like an action is happening. Well that's my two cents. :)

+1: Fragor deals 1 damage to target creature and an additional 1 damage for each equipment attached to that creature. Unattach all equipment attached to that creature.

-2: Sacrifice an artifact. If you do, Fragor deals 2 damage to each creature and each player.

-6: You get an emblem with "Creatures you control have haste and double strike as long as you control an artifact. At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice an artifact."

Starting Loyality: 3

Goblin, male. The idea came from the fact that goblins of Sorok "make equipment that is well, a bit risky." Fragor can tap into the power of the equipment to cause devastation. The first ability represents Fragor causing the equipment to "shock" its holder so they drop it. The second ability represents Fragor tapping into the destruction the goblin-made artifacts can cause. The third ability represents the chaos artifacts can cause in the hands of goblins. The upkeep cost puts a limit on it with the flavor of using up an artifacts potential.

@vic to answer your question, we want to leave it wide open, from that a top 10 will be selected, we will present our suggestions on improvements for the cards and have people vote. If our suggestions change the original intent or scope of the card, it normally does not make the top 10. that is the hard part.

One quick aside, everyone is doing great and we want you all too keep the ideas flowing, but keep flavor in mind. Remember why planeswalkers have 'loyalty' counters. When they leave play they are exiled or their loyalty is exhausted. Just keep that in mind with mechanics that you are adding.

Design Team-

I would like to propose that when it comes time for voting, we change the previous rule that posters may only comment on the cards they are voting for. I think that we have some people on here who would be able to offer good insights on other cards, too. It looks like we have a group people on here who are not greedy or egotistical, or likely to "sabotage" someone else's stuff.

Example: Last time around, with Ulgris, I would have been happy with Rot Liege. Liked it a lot, just thought it was overpowered. Since it was a close call anyway between that and another card, I went with the other one. The only way I would have been able(according to the rule, anyway) to say that, is if I actually voted for it, and then said that I thought it was overpowered, and suggested an adjustment.

It seems like it would be good if we were allowed to go ahead on say things like that-meaning we would comment on more than just the one we voted for. And not only that, but, hey, someone might just have some good insight on more than one card. I can't see a downside to it with this group.

I don't usually do things like this but I thought that I'd give it a shot.

I like the Idea of Noggle's and I love R and U. Because of this I have come up with a Noggle Plainswalker that I feel has great flavor in that it has an arsenal of crafty/tricky/prankish effects.

Gelion, the Noggle Prankster

CMC: R/U/3

Loyalty: 4

+2: Reveal target player's hand. Choose and discard 1 card from it. That player draws 2 cards

-3: Exile target non-token creature, that creatures's controller reveals cards from the top of their library until a creature card is revealed or you run out of cards. If a creature is revealed in this way, put that creature into play tapped. Put the rest of the cards revealed in this way on the bottom of the library in random order.

-7: Exile target player's hand and then search their library for as many cards as were exiled by this effect of your choice. Put those cards into their hand.

His first effect can be used on either yourself to give card advantage and ditch dead cards, or get rid of a threat from your opponent while gaining valuable information. Both sides of this have their drawbacks; on one hand gaining card advantage is great, but at the cost of surprise... not always. On the other side of the coin, taking out a threat and gaining valuable information is awesome, but giving them a +1 for it, not so much... Double edged swords = fun stuff.

His second effect can either be really good or really bad depending on the timing and the deck in question. Need to remove their Wurmcoil Engine that's beating you into a pulp? Exile it, hope another one doesn't replace it but even if it does, at least it's tapped for this turn so you can attack. Need to get some use out of that Trinket Mage ? Exile it, hope you hit your Frost Titan but be happy with another Trinket Mage 's search ability.

The Last effect is more brutal than you are probably imagining a the moment. You can either load your hand with whatever you need to win of fill theirs up with DeadCards/Land in the late game. Either way, you will likely win without much of a fight.

Hope you enjoy the card and good luck to everyone else.

Mpz5 says... #92

Oh the theme of my card is Prankster Swapping which seems to fit a Noggle's personality well IMO.

With him on the field I have a feeling that things will get rather chaotic as your opponent can never assume that they will have a specific creature on the field or card in their hand at the start of any given turn... You can't say it will be boring.

December 21, 2010 10:39 p.m.

vic says... #93

Mpz5 - I like the flavor of your Noggle(that's what she said). If it doesn't end up as the planeswalker, you might consider a Legendary Creature version of it later on. That 3rd ability is a cool one.

December 22, 2010 2:54 a.m.

Rando Gribr - 2/U/R

Planeswalker - Rando

0: Shuffle target Library.

+1: Each player shuffles his or her hand into their Library and then draws that many cards.

-2: You may cast an instant or sorcery from your graveyard without paying its casting cost if you do exile that card.

-6: You get an emblem with "Play with the top card of your library revealed. As long as the revealed card is an instant or sorcery you may play it without paying it's casting cost."

Starting Loyalty: 4 The idea I was going for is a Dwarf that has taken a liking to more than just Red magic and making equipment... he's an outcast amongst dwarves but it doesn't bother him one bit!

The first ability is mostly to play a role later once his ultimate goes off, it would help you put an instant or sorcery on top if you reveal something else. Also it's useful if you find yourself in the rare predicament of not having cards in hand OR instants or sorceries in your graveyard. Or if someone is using Jace 2.0 and sets up his top 3...SHUFFLE!

His +1 ability is classic red Winds of Change ... I always felt the card seemed it should have been blue... so it fits well for a U/R walker.

His -2 ability brings red and blue together in a great way, searching your graveyard for instants and sorceries is very blue... but its better with burn!!

His Ultimate makes the burning even easier. Allowing you to play instants or sorceries for free if they are on top of your deck, and once you play them if Rando is still around you can use his -2 ability to bring it back and do it one more time!

Basically Blue enables Red Burnination or more blue card draw...or bounce or whatever you want to play! I was a big fan of Whirpool when it was around as well if you couldn't tell :)

Im not trying to be a prick, but i still feel many of the ultimates are lame, repeats, unfun, unoriginal, and cost are weird. Also many are out of the flavor of the set OR to narrow like make x goblin tokens or all dwarfs get awesomeness! till EOT. The joy of walkers is they visit settings, should be fresh fun and balanced AND have many interactions beyond +1 something gets flying, -1 something gets trample and -8 win the game steal your opponents wallet. YES Jez is based around equipment but ALL sets will have some, makes it more possibilites for blocks so on. YES my is only slightly imaginative so we can do better, but lets stop rehashing artifact-like cards onto walkers and lets learn that +1 turn a land into island is broken and Randos -6 is not worth it...ultimates should change the game state immediately, not wait. Feel free to ripe me a new one lol

December 31, 2010 11:29 p.m.

@ kickingcloud007

I think you make a lot of valid points in your comment Specifically that walkers are meant to be fun and balanced.

But to defend Rando's abilities lets think about the walkers thus far... all of them have been color specific...

both Jace's do things that are VERY Blue

Sorin, and Liliana are loaded with Black effects...

Chandra is as Red as it gets...

Even the multi colored Ajani Vengeant does things associated with Red and White. Which is my biggest problem with your Jez.... We already have a walker with those colors... Also his +2 is too strong.. 2 loyalty free equip and an extra ability? It's seems a bit much. Though if there were a walker associated with equipment that wasn't mono white it should be R/W to be sure.

With Rando I was simply trying to bring out the flavor of the color combination I was using... and If you have ever played a lot of Blue red it's pretty much "Draw, burn, draw more, burn more" Chances are if you are playing R/U you are playing a lot of instant's and Sorceries so he would fit in most decks running those colors.

Allowing you to play spells for free from the top of your library for the rest of the game is definitely worth it... especially if you keep rando around and follow up by playing that same spell from the graveyard next turn. His abilities all work well as stand alones and his Ultimate simply enables you to build a really strong strategy around it if you want... Look at the new Elspeth Tirel her ultimate even destroys herself... unless you build a token strategy around her the only other time you would really go ultimate with her is in a pinch... but if you were in a pinch she's prolly be long gone anyway.

Honestly how may walkers ultimates are really relavent? Most don't stick around long enough to go off ... usually if they last that long you already won the game. The Ultimate just needs to be something that is flavorful and has an impact, both of which are true for rando and Jez. Aside from Garruk, Sorin, and Bolas none of the walkers ultimate's are immediate game winners but they definitely change the way the rest of the game goes. And even they aren't certain wins.

Sorry i'm rambling :)
