Hello again Tapped Out, Today if FNM so we are going to look at some infect decks that I have been playing around with and then then I am going to give everyone a list that is up the in cost but I think maybe with some fine tuning could be a fun deck if you got money to back it up. We are going to look at Mono Green Infect, Mono Black Infect and B/U Infect. I have not tried B/U/G or G/U yet. But the big money list will be U/G infect because Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Lotus Cobra is always great and I just wanted to put a U/G build together and this cards can go a long way to making it work.

Mono Green Infect

##Creatures
4x Putrefax
4x Ichorclaw Myr
4x Blight Mamba
4x Necropede

##Instants/Sorceries
4x Vines of Vastwood
4x Primal Bellow
4x Explore
2x Cultivate

##Planeswalkers
2x Garruk Wildspeaker
##Artifacts
1x Mimic Vat
4x Contagion Clasp
##Lands 23x Forest

So this deck is half combo half aggro. Putrefax is the bomb here and should never be played if you are not planning on winning that turn. Now yes a Lightning Bolt or a Mana Leak can mess your plan up but if you Putrefax and leave them with life then it becomes a lot harder to win. If they are at 6 or 7 counters then your little guys will never go unblocked like they may in the first few turns. Then really you are stuck in trying to Garruk -4 or out number them. Contagion Clasp is a back up plan and a kill spell not bad for a 2 drop. The ramp is nice to try to get ahead so you can try to win before control decks and set up or be aggro deck build there army up. Explore also draws you a card which help you get to more important cards. Primal Bellow is also just nuts in this deck, if they let one of the 12 two drop infect guys pass and then before they know it they have 7 or 8 counters and of course on Putrefax it can be game over very fast. Mimic Vat is only at one because yeah it is great with Putrefax but other then that none of your other guys are that great with it. Also unless the other player is playing infect then 9 out of 10 times there guys are not going to help. Vines of Vastwood is kinda like our counter spell and pump spell all in one. They try to bolt or some kind of removal to kill our guys we can brush that spell off and pump and in a deck when you are swinging for game and if they stop you then you could run out of gas but this card and save and win you the game.

Mono Black Infect

##Creatures
2x Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon
4x Hand of the Praetors
4x Ichor Rats
4x Plague Stinger
4x Necropede

##Instants/Sorceries
2x Disfigure
2x Doom Blade
2x Consuming Vapors
1x Duress
3x Inquisition of Kozilek
1x Marsh Casualties
4x Sign in Blood

##Planeswalkers
1x Liliana Vess
##Artifacts 1x Mimic Vat
2x Contagion Clasp
##Lands 23x Swamp

Now the first thing that I just want to point out is Marsh Casualties is because of my meta at my FNM. They are ton of Elves, Goblins and other aggro decks but this can be replaced with one more of any card we are not already running 4 of. So we got a little bit of removal some discard a little bit of draw power and then the 18 infect dudes to beat people down. Inquisition of Kozilek is great to take out Mana Leak and all kind of dangerous guys like Goblin Chieftain, Goblin Guide, Lotus Cobra, Elvish Archdruid, and Ezuri, Renegade Leaderfoil. Duress are in there for cards that Inquisition can not get like Planeswalkers and sweepers like Consume the Meek and Day of Judgment. Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon is a great finisher 4/4 flying infect guy for 5 yes please. Being able to give it haste or regenerate is just gravy on top. It was love at first sight with Hand of the Praetors. Now its not the best guy around but +1+1 to all your guys is great with infect and then being able to finish someone off just by casting a guy was just the kind of card I wanted for infect, he could have been better but you can say that about every card. Liliana Vess can win you the game in a few ways. She can drain down there hand and keep them off answers or blockers. She can tutor up cards like Contagion Clasp or Ichor Rats if you are only a few counter away from winning or a removal card if you need and answer for a big guy smashing your face in. Then she can summon up all the guys in all graveyards to your side of the field. Now this can mean an infect army for you or an army of non-infect guys that can win you a game in a few turns. Now thinking about it I want to share a story with you. I was letting one of my friends play this deck a few weeks ago and I was setting 2 seat down from and I just got done with my match and I look of to his game and his opponent had no guys like maybe one card in hand and my friend had a Grave Titan, 2 zombies tokens, 2 Hellkite Charger, 1 Necropede and like 2 or 3 more guys I could not see but I was shocked and just walked away. When he came over after the match ended he said that he seen one guy the whole game and it was Necropede but he got Liliana Vess out and the guy keep dropping big guy after big guy from his hand and then next thing you know my friend had an army and won the game. Now I am not sure what the other guy was playing but a deck with Grave Titan and Hellkite Charger but its sound fun.

Blue/Black Infect

##Creatures
1x Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon
4x Hand of the Praetors
4x Ichor Rats
3x Plague Stinger
4x Necropede
3x Thrummingbird

##Instants/Sorceries
3x Tainted Strike
2x Contagion Clasp
4x Preordain
4x Mana Leak
2x Doom Blade

##Planeswalkers
2x Jace Beleren
##Lands
4x Creeping Tar Pit
4x Darkslick Shores
4x Drowned Catacomb
7x Swamp
5x Island

Now when I build this deck I was thinking about Thrummingbird, Tainted Strike, and Creeping Tar Pit. Just something about Creeping Tar Pit swinging for 4 unblockable infect makes me smile. Plus Thrummingbird plus Tainted Strike for 3 flying infect is not bad. Now both these you cant count on to win you every game but there are a nice part of this deck. Creeping Tar Pit can still snipe planeswalkers. Now this is kind of the same list as the mono black just with Tainted Strike and some blue cards put in. You do have a little more draw power with Jace Beleren and Preordain and a little less removal but you got some flyers and proliferate in your back pocket. But really other then the combo that I said with Tainted Strike and the counters this deck plays the same as mono black. Now we do not have the discard either but you can always sideboard it. Control players may have better luck with this deck then the other two.

Blue/Green Infect

Now just keep in mind this is nothing that I have played, its just a list that I would try if I had the stuff too.

##Creatures
3x Lotus Cobra
4x Putrefax
4x Necropede
4x Hand of the Praetors
4x Ichor Rats

##Instants/Sorceries
4x Preordain
2x Inquisition of Kozilek
2x Vines of Vastwood
##Planeswalkers
3x Jace, the Mind Sculptor
2x Garruk Wildspeaker

##Artifacts
2x Contagion Clasp
1x Mimic Vat
##Lands
4x Creeping Tar Pit
4x Misty Rainforest
4x Verdant Catacombs
3x Island
5x Forest
4x Swamp

Ok so first thing after I look at this I don't like that in every color I have cards that cost 2 of the same color. But this is the list I am to stay with. Ok so I could not find room for {{Mana Leaks]] but I got 4x Preordain and Jace, the Mind Sculptor in so I think the blue spells here will pull there share. Next we got green with Garruk Wildspeaker, Lotus Cobra, Putrefax and Vines of Vastwood. So Garruk and Lotus Cobra can help with mana issues. Putrefax is just a beatstick and then we have our kinda counter and pump spell in Vines of Vastwood. Last we have black with Hand of the Praetors, Ichor Rats, and Inquisition of Kozilek. Hands pump almost all our guys and his other effect is a big help too. Rats are just rats and they combo well with Mimic Vat. Inquisition of Kozilek help take counter and removal out of there hand and take out blockers before they even hit the field. Now i would love to play test this deck but I am sure it would need some work. Well If anyone wants to try there hand at G/U infect just put it on tapped out and comment below let me know and I will take a look. I really would like to see what y'all can come up with.

The Future of Infect

Well we know that more infect is on the way and I am sure it will effect every deck I have talked about. I am ready for this next set more then I think I have been about any Magic set. I think that Phyrexian Crusader is going to be big. First strike protection from red and from white for 3 on a 2/2 body would be good a card but I think infect on this guy makes this the best infect dude that we have some far just a bit in front of a tie between Putrefax and Skithiryx. Oh and I bring up other card that we learned about a few days ago Hero of Bladehold because I think that you could she this Battle Cry effect on infect guys. No I don't no anything you don't but it feels like it could be a effect for both side or maybe Phyrexian will get it own effect. Well tell next time have fun and go infect your FNM.

This was a really great exploration of a niche strategy. I think there is real value here for anyone looking to build an infect deck. I think that infect needs two things from the next two sets to be a tier 1 strategy a quality 1 drop (not necessarily on the power with Goblin Guide but something like Goblin Tunneler would be nice) and some better form of endgame maybe a spell that gives poison counters like a Corrupt or a Planeswalker.

You forgot Colorless/Barely Black infect!

Throne of Stuff

I'm not sure if its anygood, but its probably worth a look.

And jacelightning, I think that finisher is Contagion Engine ? But I agree. I think we will see a spell that just striaght up gives poison counters.

It's an option but I happen to think that Contagion Engine is just two big of a mana sink to be viable because against a lot of decks have things like the Titans sitting at the 6 mana slot that really affect the board and at six mana you really want something game breaking.

great article, as an infect player, i appreciate every angle & variations of infect decks

perhaps in the third set of the current block there'll be an infect related planeswalker but right now, in the upcoming set of Mirrodin Besieged, i don't think there's going to be a infect specific PW.

and i do think in the near future there will be an infect finisher like Corrupt but i doubt there will ever be a quick spell that will give players poison counters (like a one mana infect Lightning Bolt -esque type nonpermanent )

i can see the rioting now.

You forgot B/G infect!

I think there will be a Bolt-like burn spell, but it will be at a higher mana cost.

when I said a bolt-like spell, i meant at the CHEAP cost of one mana (in this case it would probably be one black)

i don't ever think there will be a card like that.

a Lightning Bolt poison counter card (essentially, one black for however many poison counters, even if it was just one) would just be ridiculous and would totally kill the game.

however, i do think there will be an instant speed type card that gives creatures -1/-1 counters (the other part of the infect ability) if there isn't a card like that already, then they're probably gonna make it in the upcoming sets.

My first ever deck was the B/G starter deck from Scars. It was good but then i discovered Boar Umbra . I have started running 4 in my deck and i tell you a 4/4 Plague Stinger With Totem Armour can be deadly

in my opinion, Eel Umbra > most other umbras including the Boar Umbra

I'd love to hear what you think about one of my favorite infect combos. perilous myr + tainted strike + throne of geth. 5 counters on turn 3 and it's versetile.

You should try swinging with putrefax and return putrefax into your hand before your turn ends. Putrefax+Groundswell / Giant growth ---> Unsummon or disperse it back.

Anyone think that infect will kill regular aggro decks?

January 9, 2011 10:33 p.m.

Deco_y says... #17

By the end of the block, infect aggro might kick some ass, but kill RDW? I don't think anything really can other then maybe U/Anything control.

popeyroach says... #18

don't think it will kill RDW. burn spells are too nasty.
