Hey TappedOut'ers,
KrazyCaley's doing some pretty good challenges, but I'm thinking of one myself. Here's the rules.
- Extended format. (No vintage or legacy), (4pts)
- Your deck MUST use mostly red spells. To define mostly, in the pie chart labeled "Land Mana", you must have at least 50% red mana, (4pts)
- Your deck must strive to win by someway OTHER than burning quick damage. A good combo or alt-win like Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind would be acceptable. ,(10pts)
- You will get points for creativity. (Creative names you somehow manage to link, creative combos, and creative card choice.), (10pts)
- Does your deck even work? I will be pretty harsh when grading this part, and I suggest you play your deck at least a couple times to see it work., (12pts)
If you have any questions on what would be acceptable in terms of how damage is dealt, you can email me at [email protected] (Oh god, I probably just sold my soul to my computer for the next week.)
Note from KC- Deadline for this one will be a week from now, 1-20-10, at midnight US Pacific time. Darkness1835 will judge it up. I'll be back with a new challenge when I post Darkness' results.
Here's my first entry, currently under editing.
January 13, 2010 5:25 p.m.
could you define burning quick damage a little better, please?
January 13, 2010 7:39 p.m.
Darkness1835 says... #5
Certainly! Burning "quick" damage is cards like Lightning Bolt or Lava Spike . the only point to the deck is to deal out damage to your opponent FAST, and win maybe 5th or 6th turn. I'm not saying if you have Lightning Bolt in your deck its burn, but you better have it in there for a reason other than just sending at your opponents face. If you DO choose to go the route of "burn", be creative. dont just fill the deck with Shock s, get a combo out.

deck:deathtouch-pyromancer-v2 and deck:voodoo-shieldstick.
January 13, 2010 9:45 p.m.
I made this a while ago but its unique! Modern Pauper Candyland
January 13, 2010 10:10 p.m.
Couple of entries - Pardon me, I Belched and Dingus Destruction
January 14, 2010 1:58 a.m.
Well, I think I can still score high for effectiveness and creativity. I was playing this with harrow, but then sadly discovered it was an uncommon.
Here is my second entry:
January 14, 2010 2:04 a.m.
Oh wow I had no idea this deck was extended! Thought it was vintage for sure!
It is based upon red cards so judge carefully.

Damn, linked to the judgement card. Try this one on for size!

... plus, for added pimpitry, it has no creatures!
January 14, 2010 4:46 a.m.
most of these still seem like burn or quick aggro, even a lot of the combo. I think that there shoul be more clarification on the theme and how much can be a different color
January 14, 2010 8:18 a.m.
Darkness1835 says... #21
I suppose technically even the example I gave (Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind ) is burn. but i just wanted to see a red deck win without burning. burning meaning Lightning Bolt after Lightning Bolt to win the game. most of the decks sumbited so far are fair interpretations of this.
January 14, 2010 9:46 a.m.
I know that I am repeating myself I just wanted to post mine together take a chance 1st entry land recycle 2nd entry searing control 3rd entry
January 14, 2010 11:23 a.m.
btw- what are these being tested against, anything in the extended environment or just other submitted challenge decks. Just wondering for sideboards
January 14, 2010 11:34 a.m.
KrazyCaley says... #24
I generally test the decks against each other and, if necessary because there are weird quirks about those matchups, also against "vanilla" archetypes that would be valid in the format. Not sure what Darkness' protocol will be, though.

Darkness1835 says... #26
the plan was the run all the decks against each other, then randomly assign two headed giant. that depends on how many decks are submitted and if theres an even number and all that.
January 14, 2010 6:15 p.m.
Can I withdraw entries to save you time and effort and then submit some others in place (although a smaller number to save you effort).
January 14, 2010 7:44 p.m.
Darkness1835 says... #28
Submit as many as your want. I'm almost done with most entries because the only real restriction that need to be judged by playing is the last one, which i will do once i am done accepting challenges. because i've pretty much gotten all of them "half-done", dont withdraw any. besides, then more the enter the better chance you have of winning.
unless you just suck.

im just going down the line, so if you DO edit, please do repost it. that way i can keep going down the line without jumping around.
thanks.
January 16, 2010 2:11 a.m.
2 things.
Since there is a deadline and editing may be happening up until that deadline. It might not be a good idea I think that you should wait till everything is done.
And linking to that song wierd page is just lame. The comedy career will not work out. Funny and lame are different words
January 16, 2010 7:53 a.m.
you might try waiting until the end and then random spotted single elimination one-on-one matches in a bracket system to the finals. Sounds like a fair way to do it. That way you can assign points for winning at differing levels. Solid criteria I think.
January 16, 2010 7:58 a.m.
I have a challenge idea - vintage. deck must cost around 35 bucks. for every dollar you go over , you start with one less life. ie a 40 dollar deck would penalize you 5 life at the stat of a duel.

@squire,
- i appreciate your opinion.
- i DONT appreciate being made fun, especially over the internet. next time, try not to be rude. it'll go over better.
- since people DO tend to change their decks around, i have decided that im just starting over on the 20th. as for the criteria, each deck is judged on the first 4 individually, and then massive playing ensues for the other 12 points (each deck plays every deck 3 times, best 2/3, randon two headed giant, best 2/3etc) scores that tie go to head to head, or round robin tournaments to decide who wins.
January 16, 2010 12:40 p.m.
sorry for the inappropriate comment.
the rest of the stuff sounds very fair

Hey guys, this is what I built for my challenge. I wont be counting it in the round robin mayhem, but I'm just posting it to show you the type of deck that would probably do very well in the challenge. Stuffy In Here?
January 18, 2010 1:41 p.m.
tapanmeister says... #50
... I just built a stuffy/plasma deck for this. Real original! :)
January 18, 2010 2:34 p.m.
Darkness1835 says... #53
Now accepting guesses as to who will win the challenge, and with what deck. special "trophy" and honorable mention if you can guess one, or both!
only one guess per person. No guesses will be accepted after 12am on January 21st.
January 18, 2010 7:22 p.m.
Not trying to alter the outcome or anything but I think Squire nailed the prettiest deck build.
January 19, 2010 5:59 p.m.
As in he said Kiki-Truder was good. I think it is too although not necessarily the best.

Panoptic Stupor. Wonderful bit with the land mana, its not abusive at all to stick to the rules not the spirit, right?
January 20, 2010 7:23 p.m.
darkmonk6593 says... #62
Sprouting Lock? another one fo the road. And also... Kiki should lose by default, isn't part of this based on creativity? And i think its banned in EXT... But id double check... Havn't seen it at extended tournaments, but red and blue have answers for fast stuff so it would be there...
January 21, 2010 1:33 a.m.

Time! Darkness, rate these and get me your results, if you'd be so kind.

cmon guys, basic internet search skills http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Resources.aspx?x=judge/resources/banned most of the banned/restricted lists were changed last October.
January 21, 2010 8:54 a.m.
@darkmonk6593 megrim/discard/rack and you're busting my chops for creativity?
January 21, 2010 8:57 a.m.
Darkness1835 says... #66
I'm already started. school stands in the way, but I'll get them too you as soon as possible.
January 21, 2010 9:44 a.m.
darkmonk6593 says... #67
@ Samhein: Take a look at the second deck i posted Sprouting Lock?, and tell me about how typical that deck is. And while the megrim discard may have been good, i don't believe it ever was banned (instant fame?) like kikki. And for the creativity in the rack deck, look to the uses of transmute, and the panoptic mirror, unconventional in typical decks.
