I would like to introduce all of you to a member of the Design Team, Xander574, who will be going over our latest card creation challenge.

Our Irindu Planeswalker Winner

Hello everyone. First off, I would like to apologize for the wait between challenges. In the last couple of weeks with M11 spoilers, vacations, and EPIC archenemy duels the design/creative teams have been pretty busy. But, with the release of M11 on the immediate horizon, we are all once again inspired to make our own MTG set. So, let's get back to it.

And now, the time for which you have all been waiting, after two months of deliberation, voting, and craziness, the negashards first planeswalker and Irindu's Champion, the Molder of Bodies, The Captain of Clones, the Master of CHANGING STUFF INTO OTHER STUFF, the one the only! BAGAN, THE LIFE SHAPER has been chosen as the Irindu Planeswalker.

Irindu Planeswalker Winner

We decided that other than the name (which was previously Babaganoosh), to keep everything the same. The major issue seemingly being that his middle ability is too powerful. But if looked into, if you use his second ability on the turn he enters the battlefield, it is just a more difficult to cast Clone, which has the same converted mana cost as Bagan.

So, congratulations go to squire1 for winning the first card creation challenge.

The Irindu Blue Rare Challenge

Now, as all things must FLOW and continue, it is time for the next challenge.

The next challenge will be to create three of the rares for the Irindu shard. Obviously, there are some guidelines.

1) We are looking for three rares: one Creature, one Enchantment, and one Instant/Sorcery.

2) They must all be Blue.

3) Each person can only submit four entries (not four entries per card type, FOUR TOTAL ENTRIES). If you submit more than four, we will only take the last four submissions and ignore the earlier ones.

4) The cards will be judged based on four categories: Effectiveness, Set Cohesion, Balance, and Creativity. Each category will be worth 10 points each.

Here are a couple of helpful things:

1) Remember that the only keywords that can appear on Irindu cards are the “evergreen" keywords (deathtouch, defender, double strike, enchant, equip, first strike, flash, flying, haste, indestructible, intimidate, landwalk, lifelink, protection, reach, regenerate, shroud, trample, and vigilance). In addition to these “evergreen” keywords, the keyword that is exclusive to Irindu, Flow (Flow COST: As you draw this card, you may reveal it and cast it for its flow cost. If you do, draw a card.), may be used.

2) We love to see people create their own physical pictures of the cards that they created. Often, they are great looking and really cool, and I encourage you to share them with us. But for our convenience, if you can also type the information directly into the comment, it makes our lives easier. You won't be marked down for not doing this, but copying and pasting text saves a lot of time compared to typing it all up from scratch.

3) Just a reminder, the winning cards may be changed during play testing. Be it mana cost or other small things to make the set balanced, your original creation may not be EXACTLY what it was originally, but I promise that we will try our hardest to keep the card as close to its origins as possible.

HAVE FUN CREATING!

It Seems Introductions Are in Order

Lastly, here's a little about myself. Because this is the boring part, I left it till last. My “name” is Xander574. I’ve been playing Magic since Tempest, and I have been a member of Tappedout.net for over 9 months. As soon as I heard that Tappedout was creating a set, I jumped at the chance to be a part of the Design Team. I guess my qualifications for doing this would be that up until recently, I worked on the R&D team for Maui Toys, Inc. and have been going to school for game design for the last year in Los Angeles. Other than that, I like moon-lit walks on the beach and pina coladas.

EDIT: Scry is not an evergreen keyword, so it has been removed from the list.

Panda says... #1

Except that clone doesn't target anything and isn't prone to fail to protection clauses or shroud. Not anywhere close to a clone.

July 9, 2010 12:42 p.m.

mistergreen527 says... #2

Yeah, I guess it's actually closer to a nonkicked Rite of Replication , except that it's sorcery speed. It's still harder to cast though.

July 9, 2010 1 p.m.

DeckBuilder345 says... #3

It would seem that the list of evergreen terms is a bit overbroad, for the purposes of making blue only cards. For instance (deathtouch, reach, regenerate,trample, and even lifelink) are all not typically included in blue cards. Which leaves the evergreen list looking more like

defender, double strike, enchant, equip, first strike, flash, flying, haste, indestructible, intimidate, landwalk, , protection, , shroud, , vigilance, and the newly added scry.

With some of those being inherently more "blue" than others like (Flying, flash, islandwalk, and scry)

Brief Description: Irindu the the plane of change. Specializing in card drawing.

Long Description: The shard of Irindu is a place saturated in green mana that has been spurred on by red mana and blue mana to twist all aspects of life and wizardry. This strange landscape consists of constantly changing rivers, bizarre vegetation, and mutated creatures. The Flow is ever-present here. The Flow is a raw and surging type of mana that travels through the landscape and the creatures living here, which it changes in both frightening and beneficial ways. The environment and creatures here are in a constant state of change. Something as simple as changing color would be considered mundane here. These unusually sudden evolutions could mean that one day you're hunting your prey and the next day that same prey is hunting you.

Creature types: Beast, Dragon, Elemental, Human, Mutant, Shapeshifter, Sphinx, Weird, Wizard, and Wurm

Keywords so far: FLOW, Trample,haste, Flying

Do these cards have to be mono blue or can they be multicolored as long as one of those colors is blue?

July 9, 2010 3:40 p.m.

mistergreen527 says... #9

@DeckBuilder345:

Very true. Using keywords that don't fit blue can be done, but the card will probably be docked points in set cohesion, as we want the set to feel like it belongs in the world of other Magic cards.

@Xander574:

You're right. Edit to my original edit has been made.

@IronHead:

Excellent question. The cards for this challenge are mono-blue. Multicolored challenges will be later on.

If you draw a land card, or a card whose Flow cost you cannot pay, discard your hand, sacrifice all permanents you control, exile your graveyard, and end your turn.

Spells you control are uncounterable this turn.

Draw a card.

They both seem a bit wordy, but I'm not sure how else I could convey their effects. I'm also not entirely sure about how to balance the casting costs.

The 'uncounterable' bit in Flowcaster's Gambit is to prevent you from, say, Spell Pierce ng your way out of it, but maybe that's unneccessary.

Also: drawing a Flowcaster's Gambit through Flowcaster's Gambit? Pretty sick (though likely to end very quickly). Perhaps it needs "A deck cannot have more than one copy of Flowcaster's Gambit."?

Quick comment: I know these cards are supposed to be mono-blue, but there are a ton of them that have so many blue mana symbols in their casting costs and/or abilities that they'd be unplayable outside of mono-blue decks. I'm not sure that fits the theme of a three-color shard.

July 13, 2010 5:48 a.m.

Jarrod_0067 says... #77

@ CharonSquared - who knows? there may be a nice multicolor land; or a blue version of Dark Ritual ; or even a card that adds blue mana when you play a flow cost by the time the set is finished. Personally, I dont know why black gets all the mana boosts. I want to see a Dark Ritual for all colors

Ive had this idea for a while now (creature with both a tap & untap ability) This is my first try at making it well balanced. The options here are amazing the thought of it just feels twisted. Some play testing would have to be done to work out the casting cost but 1UUU seams about right to me.
