Do you fear getting unsummoned? Is your CMC zero? Does your family fear that if you leave the battlefield, even just for a second, you'll never come back? If so, you may be a token. If not, you still probably play Magic and thus appreciate a good token.
Since Wizards began printing tokens they have helped the flow, aesthetic, and organization of the game. But what about the tokens that they forgot to print? That's what this resource is for. I have created several token mock-ups that can be printed, proxied, and played-with, and found several more on the internet that I have compiled here for the TappedOut community.
Volume #1: Legendary Tokens
There have been some epic tokens that have gone unprinted in the Magic universe, until now. Powerful beats that have no business being represented by a flipped over card or an empty sleeve. While not all are technically legendary, they all deserve to be in this category.
## KALDRA It is a crime that this bad-boy was never officially printed. Once you get Shield of Kaldra, Sword of Kaldra, and Helm of Kaldra on deck, game over baby! Wizards officially dropped the ball on this one, they were printing tokens back in the Mirrodin days. All the internet Kaldra tokens were garbage, so I found some art and made one for Hey yo dawg I herd you like Kaldra, which is how this whole token fiasco started.
## TATSUMASA Tatsumasa, the Dragon's Fang is not a bad piece of steel in its own right. Expensive, yes. But if you have the mana, a repeating 5/5 flier is a handy sidekick.
## URAMI This token I found online. Tomb of Urami can summon its namesake in token form for the smooth cost of ALL YOUR OWN LAND. This guy sees less play then the disabled list, but the token is dope.
## VOJA I love Voja! I have struggled to find an excuse to run the slightly too-expensive Tolsimir Wolfblood in many decks, just because I wanted to bring man's best friend (elf's best friend?) to the table. There are a lot of lame Vojas on the inter-webs, including the official Magic Online one, but this one is nasty! Woof!
## STANGG Old. School. If you dig long and hard through the mountains of TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE old legendary creatures from the Legends (Gosta Dirk anyone? Sivitri Scarzam, yeah!!) set eventually you will stumble on the odd barely-good-enough-to-play gem. Dakkon Blackblade, Gwendlyn Di Corci, etc. Among them is Stangg, two 3/4s for 6 mana wasn't bad in the old days. Let's give the old boy a token
## BONUS MARIT LAGE!! Marit Lage is a nasty lady. She's like if Greta Van Susteren was a Magic card. She's like my old Santa Barbara landlady that time Cole broke his fishtank and flooded the carpet. She's already got a token, and the token is dope. But for you TappedOut community, today only, here is a semi Cthulu-ish alternate Marit Lage token. |
Next Up: Volume 2: Classic Tokens
That's all for now. Next post will be some alternate art classics. Stay tuned. If you have special requests for tokens or mock up concept cards, post on my wall, I'll take a look and see what I can do.
Is it legal to use tokens if u just copy pasted them into paint, printed them out, then threw them in sleeves?

is there a place online where you can just see every token made?

@omgyoav - You can use basically anything for tokens, including your idea.

@miinor_threat : They actually do have a Kaldra token but they only made it recently for MtGO.

@birdseed : All of the tokens and Vanguard cards are kept on an up to date list here.

The Stangg-Twin token is so ballin' that I may even look for some Stanggs to use it.

@squire1 : I did various searches for digital art and pulled these mostly from artists websites. Some were pieces of fantasy art from other games etc., and a few were larger images that I cropped and tweaked the color and borders of.
@Zanven : No way! I had seen that Kaldra art but I thought it was just some bad fan mock-up photoshopping the equipment together. I didn't know that was the MTGO one! I know he is a blue energy avatar in the canon but I think that one doesn't really cut it... Thanks for the tip though, good to know.
@Namemattersnot: That's why I plan to make this a series! Some tokens are especially hard to find art for, like Mirror-Sigil Sergeant or Spawnwrithe , because they need very specific art that looks like what's on the card.
I'm working on a series of alternate versions of classic tokens, if you guys want to see something specific in the next set, just let me know!

Dave-
Make me a token that is an 0/5 defender for U with flying and protection from Scryb Ranger .

@miinor_threat : Yeah, it's pretty depressing that for a token creature that takes THREE cards to create, that was the best they could come up with. They recently made a token for Metrognome that was pretty good though. I can't find it but I'll throw it up here if I do.
I'm requesting a 5/5 Djinn token for Bottle of Suleiman , because I think it's a totally rad artifact that never got any love.
I'm pretty sure Phelddagrif , Spiny Starfish , and Afterlife never got tokens either. Although, an 'essence' token sounds pretty gross, especially if taken in a Dr. Strangelove way. They changed that after Mirage though so it's just a spirit token now, but still.

Here's a quick reference list of cards that create tokens (many with no actual token card that was created):

I think I can do Bottle of Suleiman .
I completely agree about the squirrel token issue. Caley and I have a friend with a UG deck called "Countersquirrel," and Squirrel Nest is his main engine. They did print a squirrel token back in the Mirari era, to represent the dog-sized Krosan squirrels, but I think we need a modern one. I'll see what I can do.
...and Cales... NOTHING can protect you from Scryb Ranger !

Sprouting Phytohydra . And squirrels haha. I had to reinforce that suggestion.

I would like to see a Snake token with Poisonous 1 for Serpent Generator .
More importantly, though, a Kelp token for Wall of Kelp !

I love that the art on the tokens is much better than th eart on some of these cards

AWESOME, but I'll stick to my white mini-pucks.. They aren't as intimidating as those rad tokens and some people don't even notice them..
July 1, 2010 6:43 p.m.
I take back my comment...definitely a Wood token for Jungle Patrol

Cool Stuff. I too love Voja.
I usually use standard dice for my counters as well. Just turn to the number of tokens there are.
Like Ashkaan noted, they hardly get noticed unless they were gigantic from Beastmaster Ascension or 3/3 from Sigil Captain
July 3, 2010 6:29 p.m.
How about a 1/1 Pentavite artifact creature token with flying to go along with Pentavus , and a 1/1 colorless Spirit for card:Honden of Life's Web and Dripping-Tongue Zubera .

@Alzhander There actually is an official pentavite token that is really cool.
I will see if I can find something good for some kind of Kamigawa-ish 1/1 spirit token.
July 5, 2010 4:22 p.m.
I did not realize that there was already a Pentavite token. I just looked it up and it is indeed cool looking.
