The format

This draft, for full educational goodness, will be played as a round robin. This means that every player will play a best 2 of 3 match against each other player; the winner will be the player with the best overall results at the end.

The players.

All players other than myself will be assigned pseudonyms.

1- Caley, pilot of the Tappedout deck, has been playing Magic since 1994 and estimates he has done about 100 drafts over his Magical career; he is a noted griefer, troublemaker, and ne'er-do-well.

2- "Bernard" says he's been playing "on and off since Mirrodin" and has only done "a couple" of drafts before this.

3- "Max" been playing since Alpha, now runs his own card shop. Easily the most experienced drafter of the group.

4- "P.T." has been playing since Kamigawa-block. He drafts only occasionally, but is a solid Magic player. Caley's rival for "Most blue player of this group."

5- "Elaine" has been playing Magic for about four years, but she can be found drafting every week. She "especially" likes ZEN-ZEN-WWK drafts for their speed.

6- "Sam" has never drafted ZEN-ZEN-WWK before; his usual game is legacy constructed. He has been playing Magic in general since Revised, with a long break from about 98-04.

7- "Manny" has only done one draft before, though it was a ZEN-ZEN-WWK draft. He has been playing since Shadowmoor came out.

8- "Guybrush" has been playing Magic since 2005. He has plenty of draft experience, though.

I will present the games so that you'll see exactly what each player saw, but at the time of the games, each player knew only what was in his own hand, etc. However, you will only see what I sideboarded in. Also, we'll finish out the rest of the games tomorrow, and at that time I'll show you the full results, plus a list of what was drafted and why, our fellow drafters' comments, etc.

Summary

4-0! Woo! Took some luck and a couple of crafty plays, but we pulled it out. Tomorrow I do battle with the remaining three players. I'll let you know the results tomorrow, plus I'll post the full overview of what was drafted by everyone/why/comments from fellow drafters/results/etc.

How the hell can you multi-kick Into the Roil ?!?

Several inconsistencies in players life count (saced fetch lands, trample uncounted...)

great plays on some of these. I would have differently in a few cases. Still a fun activity. Looking foward to the next article

Uhh... I'm not sure how KrazyCaley is kicking Into the Roil more than once on those occasions. This is the reason why Multikicker was made, because the regular Kicker can only be used once. I'm not sure if that would have changed the games all that much, but I just wanted to bring that to your attention. You can't kick Into the Roil more than once.

Awesome read... thanks for taking a ton of time to journal all this so we could read it. Well played.

I underestimated Claws of Valakut . Good to know. Guess this proves 15+ heads are better than one ;)

Yeah, this is definitely wrong: "Caley draws Into the Roil. Caley plays a mountain. He casts Into the Roil targeting Ruin Ghost, kicked two times. Caley draws Dispel and Burst Lightning. Then Caley passes."

I wish Into the Roil worked like that...

May 4, 2010 2:54 p.m.

KrazyCaley says... #8

Yep, we both screwed up on that one. I thought you could multikick it, I did, and he didn't point out my error. It apparently would not have changed the result of the game, but still. Will know better next time.

Problems Match 1 Game 2, Bernard didn't lose life for activating the Mesa. " " " ", Turn 11: You already pointed out the roil mistake. " " " ", Turn 13: No graypelt lifegain.

Match 2: Max never lost life from Marsh Flats .

I like it how "Max" was "easily the most experienced drafter" and he was maindecking Brink of Disaster and Mire Blight .

P.T. had the best deck by far here. Elaine was lucky with that Strength of the Tajuru , you'll go 7-0 no sweat.

The maindecked Dispel worked out better than I had thought.

Yeah, the lifegain/life ping errors are transcription errors on my part; they were done correctly during the original game.

KrazyCaley says... #11

It's pretty difficult to have both players accurately write down what happens WHILE playing. Errors ARE going to happen; apologies.

Also, @tapan- I got a sneak peek at the colors that other people were playing, and let me just say that no one but Max drafted any black in their decks. He is a bit cleverer than you think; I certainly didn't like seeing those Brinks and Blights- they efficiently killed off some big fatties of ours, anyway. Or would have, if I didn't have answers.

Also, Elaine hasn't lost any games except the ones she's lost to us.

I think there was an Arid mesa ping you missed in match 2. It was the game where you were at 2 for like forever. We rock though, woot.

mattlohkamp says... #13

you sack an island to a chump-blocked Ruinous Minotaur from some reason too... also you call 'chump-blocking' 'chop-blocking' which is hilarious. :)

palmer165 says... #14

Not that it would have made any difference, but you also missed losing a life when Pulse Tracker attacks, twice (game 1 vs Max).

Nit-picking aside, the deck is doing very well. You're getting quite lucky with all those Burst Lightning .

May 4, 2010 9:56 p.m.

Fantastic card playing. You are using the deck in a way that might have salvaged a few of these games. Also I completely understand the transcription errors. It can't be easy to write down everything exactly as it happened. When I read this I thought I was little again sitting and watching Yugioh. While I never got into that card game I always appreciated the combinations and responses that the writers of that show thought through. I look forward to the next three battles!
