Withering force

The design team liked this card as is.

Natural Birthing

There was some concern here that the lizard would never be chosen due to the lack of abilities it had. it was suggested that the lizard have an ability added to balance it more with the other tokens.

Fetid Evolution

The design team liked this card mostly as is. There was some concern that the alternate casting cost was a bit too cheap.

Withering Vines of Strength

The design team had no issues with this card as presented.

Symbiotic Ooze

The design team felt that this card was underpowered slightly and suggested that to fix it we reduce the casting cost to 3 CMC.

Pulse of the Maggots

The design team had two different veiws on this card. Some felt that the exile from graveyard mechanic should be to sacrifice a creature instead. Others on the design team felt that sacing a creature would make this card overpowered.

Ulgris' Rootmaze

The design team liked this card as is.

Ulgris' Destroyer

The design team liked this card as is.

Thick-Skinned Cobra

The design team liked this card as is.

Spreading Ooze

Design team suggested maybe adding "sacrifice a creature it gets +2/+2 until end of turn." to the card; but overall liked the card as is.

King Snake

The design team liked this card but mostly pending the below as the new rules text:
Intimidate
UU: tap target creature
BB, tap: target creature gets -X/-X where X is King Snakes Power

King Poison Dart

The design team liked the idea of a frog lord but made a few suggestions. Most of the design team felt that this should give all frogs you control +1/+1. Also "all frogs get +1/+1, reach, and have 'U: this creatures gains flying until end of turn.'" was suggested as an alternat rules text.

Delving Slime

Design team suggested that the power 3 may not be needed with deathtouch. Also it was suggested that the rules text have the word "may" added to it so that the triggered ability was not forced on the player.

Voting

Here's what we're looking for:

1) Each person should vote for Three cards, at least one of which must be a creature.

2) Each person should critique the card for which they have voted. Agree or disagree with the Head Team's suggestions and include any other ideas you have to improve the card. Any critiques made on cards for which you did not vote will NOT be put into consideration from the Head Team.

The deadline for voting is Friday, November 5th at 11:59 p.m.

This article is a follow-up to Ulgris' Green Rares The next article in this series is Ulgris' Green Rare Challenge Winners

  1. King Snake, with the BB alternate ability. It's nice to integrate the three colors into a bomb like that.
  2. Thick-Skinned Cobra Anti-wither, and it could be the endgame of a -1/-1 dispensing deck. I would suggest shroud instead of first strike for the multi-counter trigger.
  3. Fetid Evolution I don't see it as overpowered; if the set has tons of tokens, it could be tricky to set this off at all. This compares fairly evenly with Genesis Wave in my opinion.
It felt like some of the others slot in better as uncommons, so hopefully those are kept i mind for that phase of design.

Echoing shaistystone... I feel like this group of rares is pretty tame. Not many stand out to me really and none of them are aggressive. I could see most of them as some pretty cool uncommons though.

I do like Ulgris' Destroyer though, so I'll vote for that one. And I like it as it is written.

Also, just a clerical thing... Ulgris Rootmaze got put in there twice as a header.

I do not see the double header you are talking about

@squire1 : ulgris' rootmaze has two card images that are underneath the ulgris' rootmaze and ulgris' destroyer title which offset the card titles and card images.

also you will notice after that happens none of the card images match up with the card titles (if you notice the last card delving slime doesnt have a card image on the page

All fixed now though:)

I like Withering force it can be made more or less powerful by changing the +1/+1 to +2/+2 ..etc if the design team believes this card is underpowered.

Withering Vines of Strength is my 2nd vote, i think this has the potential to make any creature a very large beat stick.

last one is a tough call between the thick skinned cobra, and spreading ooze. I think i am going to go with the ooze just because token creatures are awesome and a very green mechanic! This card could quickly become a beat stick in the right deck and for only 2 mana.

  1. Delving Slime. I really like amorphous blobs. Is that normal? I'd also like to see a little less P/T on this guy but less CMC. Maybe change it to 3GG.
  2. Symbiotic Ooze. Less CMC or more P/T bonus.
  3. Pulse of the Maggots. KEEP IT AS IT IS!!! I can think of so many combos with it!

firstly, i need to ask: how many green rares are there going to be? just one, or one of each type?

Regardlessly, my votes are as follows:

  1. Spreading Ooze. Simply epic. I love it. the "sacrifice a creature: Spreading Ooze gets +2/+2 until end of turn" is a good idea in my view but could become very overpowered. Only playtesting will tell.
  2. Pulse of Maggots. I love this one too. Just i think there should be some penalty if you can't exile a creature from your graveyard. Maybe lose some life? or if the CMC is lowered, sacrifice the enchantment.
  3. King Snake. With the alternate ability as suggested by the team.
I also agree that a lot of these could make great uncommons. Also i love the idea of a Frog Lord lol

1) King Poison Dart, with the "frogs you control get +1/+1" addition.

2) Pulse of the Maggots, as it is.

3) King Snake with the BB ability.

Fetid Evolution gets first vote.I feel it is fine as is. Withering Force gets the number two.A bit strong I would have made it +1/+0. Finally I like King Poison Dart the best. I however would add that he give all frogs reach, flash and protection from snakes additionally.

November 3, 2010 6:10 p.m.
  1. withering vines of strength - maybe make 1green mana to pump instead of a colourless
  2. ulgris' destroyer - I like it as is
  3. spreading ooze - I like the extra ability suggested by the team, but at the same time, I think it's best being as Simple as possible.

my first vote is for thick skinned cobra but maybe have it gain +2/+2 for each -1/-1 counter, second vote is spreading ooze as is, and my third is fetid evolution as is

1: Spreading Ooze 2: Pulse of the Maggots 3: Fetid Evolution (although alternate casting cost bit underpriced, maybe loss of life added?)

Really-really-really liked Ulgris' Rootmaze, but found it to be way overpriced for a slowly growing wall that only conditionally became a threat, and how many turns later? Or it pops first upkeep and becomes a 1/3 vig for 5cmc? And any instant speed removal on another creature instantly makes it a defender until next upkeep? Bigger base stats and maybe trample/deathtouch instead of vigilance would make it worth 5cmc with all these conditions.

@shaistyone - we do keep cards in mind for uncommon and even common in all challenges. Which do you guys think are weak enough to be uncommon?

November 4, 2010 12:52 p.m.

xeratheenigma says... #17

delving slime and natural birthing feel like uncommons to me

leon_raymond says... #21

i agree with user:zeratheenigma, that delving slime and natural bithing feel like uncommons. I'd also like to add Ulgris' Destroyer to that list. Like Putrefy , it would be a very good uncommon but still an uncommon

I don't know what time zone your headquarters resides in, but it's a couple of hours away from the deadline here in my time zone(PST), so I'll give it a shot.

Tough one. I really like 4 of them.

1) King Poison Dart. 2) Pulse of the Maggots 3) tie between Fetid Evolution and Spreading Ooze

Don't know what you want to do with a tie, but that's what I think.

King Poison Dart works well as is, but I really do like the idea of the little froggies being able to "jump" up and block as a surprise, a la Jump , and having either wither or deathtouch.

November 6, 2010 12:55 a.m.

1) King Poison Dart

2) Fetid Evolution

3) Ulgris's Destroyer
