Almost want to hate pick that wurm. Not pleasant to play against.
Hatepick urge aside, either Trigon of Corruption or Painsmith . U/W is doable at this point and Painsmith can get really nasty.
November 8, 2010 5:36 p.m.
why wouldn't we pick the wurm?? Its a 7/7 for 7 CMC and it has a pretty damn good ability. I don't think I'd want to play against that. It isn't even a hate draft as were only in one color at the moment

Jaceface has a good point, we haven't picked a second color yet; the Slagwurm is probably a solid choice.
The Trigon is also a strong choice, though. It's a strong effect, it's repeatable weenie spot removal, it helps metalcraft. It doesn't even put us into a color; you get your mileage out of the artifact even if you don't have BB to replenish it.
I don't know if I should get a vote here since I'm just jumping in to the discussion now. Just putting in my two cents.
November 8, 2010 9:29 p.m.
Definitely Trigon of Corruption . White has a hard time dealing with Infect decks, and the Trigon shuts them down pretty hard. We're also going to want to lean towards metalcraft anyway, and we already have a lot of colored picks.
We really want to pass Engulfing Slagwurm . If you're going green, you're usually in infect, where the Slagwurm is way too slow and hits the wrong life total. If you're green and not infect, you're probably going to lose- it's wayyyy too slow in this draft. We have Arrest , which is a wonderful way to deal with it, and we can only hope that somebody abandons their current strategy to take Super SlowWurm.

I really see 3 possible choices here.
OR
OR
A halfway decent bit of equipment is always nice and combos well with those lame white cards we already picked up.... what were they..... oh yeah Sunspear Shikari . On the other hand.... i like removal, and i like the idea of depriving some one of 3 1/1 infect creatures. I kinda like the infect idea, but i know we also have a fair number of black cards, and there is a decent chance we go black / white, so i say take the removal. -1/-1 counters can be real handy. So Trigon of Corruption gets my vote.
November 8, 2010 11:35 p.m.
it looks like we're going white / artifact mostly, here? so let's take the Chrome Steed . it's not sexy, but it fits our deck well. The trigon of corruption is slow -- if you want to go removal, take the Instill Infection . 4 mana gets you the removal and a card, instead of having to pay 2 more mana with the trigon, which most of the time means you're taking 6 mana over 2 turns. Trigon of Rage is the only trigon worth getting excited about.
I know y'all hate red, but Turn to Slag is a great card in this format. there are 3 or 4 pieces of equipment in this set that are just game enders; slag becomes a table-turning 2 or 3 for 1.
having said all that, my votes are: 1. Chrome Steed 2. Turn to Slag 3. Instill Infection
November 9, 2010 1:41 a.m.
I Say Turn to Slag or Chrome Steed Turn to Slag is one of the best removal cards in this set, and if we hadn't so few artifacts I would not think about not taking it.

This is the first pick... I really think Chrome Steed comes around.
Also, don't overlook Strider Harness . Haste/pumping our Glimmerpoint Stag or Sunspear Shikari s would be awesome. I think the value of this equipment in our deck puts in on the level of the Triggon and the Wurm.
If we pick up another Arrest /Revoke Existence or two, we won't need the Triggon.
I vote Strider Harness
November 9, 2010 11:16 a.m.
trigon of corruption because who dosent love giving minus 1 counters plus its an artifact which adds for meatalcraft.
November 9, 2010 12:01 p.m.
DeckBuilder345 says... #13
Look there are a lot of creatures in this set with just a single toughness.... we can wipe out 3 of those with the trigon, or more if we are playing black. I think the chrome steed is a terrible pickup here, we have no way of knowing if we are going to get the necessary artifact count to make it worth while, and there are so much stronger picks in this pack. The instill infection only gives a single -1/-1 counter, where they trigon gives you 3 of them, and provides an artifact on the board for the potential metalcraft.
Admittedly i may have been too quick to dismiss the Engulfing Slagwurm but i am still not that excited about this card, but we do lack any creature bombs at this point, but we do have the opportunity to pick up a thresher or two in the later picks of a pack typically.
@landot not everyone hates red, i love red... but not many others in this discussion favor red, and our pilot is famously a blue lover, which means red (the enemy of blue) isn't exactly his thing. I believe i stated several threads back that boros was a nice little combo in this set, but we haven't gotten any other red cards while we did make a decent push into black. (and picked up a pretty bomby enchant) At this point i am not sure how open red is, we didn't see much red passed our way, indicating that it might be open for this round but we would have a hard time picking up cards for it next round.... or maybe not a lot of red was opened in packs....
November 9, 2010 12:43 p.m.
Engulfing Slagwurm is not to be immediately dismissed. It is a HUGE bomb, and the only way we can deal with it right now is arrest. The cost may seem prohibitive, but we have several savy drafters at the table and the slagwurm may fit VERY nicely into myr.dec. Think about that for a second.
It does not, however, fit our game plan, so if we pick it, unless we see fantastic green coming our way (Sylvok Replica s, etc.) it will just be hate.
This is going against BREAD... but I think take the Strider Harness . In games we see it, we'll be able to race much more effectively, and the way it feels now, our deck does want to race early.
Egh...

Tough one. This simply isn't a good pack for us.
I'd be content with either Strider Harness or Trigon of Corruption . Both seem like weak options for pack 1 of the round, but whatcha gunna do...
November 10, 2010 1:49 p.m.
@ DR McMeen
a single black mana (Tainted Strike ) changes the wurm into 8 points of poison for an infect deck which for the most part lacks bombs.
Look I'm not saying we NEED the Slagwurm I just would rather not go up against that beast. Seven mana is not hard to hit with a couple Myr. If we don't end up using it, so be it, nobody else gets to either.
That being said, I am not against either Poor Man's Greaves (Strider Harness ) or Trigon of Corruption they are both good cards that still don't put us in another color. I won't be disappointed with either of these picks, it is still early.

I don't hate the worm, but the only reason I would pick it is because you don't want to fight against it. It totally wrecks your board if you choose to block it, or deals 7 damage if you don't. That said, the best card (probably) is Painsmith . My judgement may be clouded by a +2 boost and added deathtouch, but personally it is the best smith out of the lot. Strider Harness works, but is also slightly slow. Trigon of Corruption won't save you. It removes three 1/1s for 10 mana. Wow, that sounds great...not. Leave Razorfield Thresher because it's more likely to still be there when the pack returns.
So my vote goes to Painsmith , followed by Strider Harness , and finally Engulfing Slagwurm just to spite
November 10, 2010 11:06 p.m.
the pick is either one of rhe trigons. We shouldnt even be considering the other options.
And seen as we are not going infect, the pick is definatly Trigon of Corruption Without a doubt
November 11, 2010 4:17 a.m.
Trigon of Corruption : there's a lot of stuff with one toughness, it's metalcraft-y, and the black we've incidentally drafted is not actually that bad, so we might actually be able to recharge it.
Engulfing Slagwurm : this thing is a serious bomb in limited - it eats everything. If we see this and don't have an immediate answer, we're not going to be happy - or alive for much longer, on a 3-turn clock.
Engulfing Slagwurm wins...barely...unless someone can convince me otherwise.

It's very even. I'll leave things open a while longer before I count it up. For the record, my thoughts:
Trigon of Corruption is ok removal in limited even without black mana, but I'd say it's not worth drafting over enlisted-slagwurm UNLESS we're planning to draft black. I've done a few SOM drafts now, and I've found that black really isn't my color of preference, so I edge towards the wurm. Though, if we want to commit to black a bit, I do think the Trigon becomes a considerably better card, better than the wurm.
Also, Trigon of Corruption is a tricky card to use, I've noticed. Now, I've had a lot of experience in this format now and I won't screw up using the Trigon in the round-robin if we draft it, but I think that a solid fire-and-forget bomb like enlisted-slagwurm certainly merits our attention.
It has my vote, though I'd be fine with the Trigon. If we pick the Trigon, though, I again strongly recommend taking a close look at the black that comes our way.
November 12, 2010 11:20 p.m.
Slagworm it is, for me. I'll gladly change my vote to support the bomb, especially if our pilot is more comfortable with it.
November 13, 2010 3:07 a.m.
I want to second everything that KrazyCaley just said. except for not liking black. There's some great black stuff in this set . . . Skinrender , Grasp of Darkness , Fume Spitter , Necrogen Scudder , etc . . . ANYHOW. There's no removal in this format that kills Engulfing Slagwurm in one go -- they have to at least 2 for one us to get rid of it. Since it never takes combat damage, Slagwurm may be the hardest thing to remove in the set.
For the record, when I first read the list, I saw it as Bellowing Tanglewurm , which is why I didn't vote for it right away.

I am advocating black as our second color. We already have some decent black cards, why not just run w/ it?
November 14, 2010 10:17 p.m.
I personally don't like the wurm in this format. As someone else said it's too slow and it doesn't even have trample. It would be awesome to play it vs a Darksteel Myr . Furthermore, taking it would mean to trash pretty much all our previous picks.
If we stay metalcraft we need A LOT more artifacts.
Strider Harness helps with the personally hated Sunspear Shikari
Trigon of Corruption is an artifact-removal, even if slow.
We saw another Turn to Slag during pack 1 and it was the ONLY decent red card: we might get some decent red cards in the next packs.
I'd like the sorcery but my vote goes to
November 15, 2010 7:16 a.m.
yah we have some good(not great but good) black cards as is, wurm isnt very good, plus the nice thing about drafting black is normally players wont pick the good non-infect black cards and they are easier to pick up

im going to go with the slagwurm it beats Strider Harness because its a rare while the harness is a common and i dont want to see it in the hands of a green player. also the main threat to it is Arrest which we can counter with Revoke Existence also it doesn't mess up the metalcraft theme because if we take it we will almost definately be taking some myr. in my opinion the Trigon of Corruption is out of the question its just not good enough.

Its been a long time since i've cast my vote on one of these. But after all the scars i've been drafting (and based on my last draft where I had a pack that looked suspiciously like this one), I feel totally confidant that the Trigon of Corruption is the correct choice. If we're in white, there's a real need to pull a ton of artifacts to make things like Auriok Sunchaser worth using.
This is by far my fave trigon for this deck, just like the "red" one is my fave for the infect deck.
On the chance we end up going blue with our second color, we can also use the proliferate mechanic to add counters. And we can also bounce it with Glint Hawk or Glimmerpoint Stag once its used up, and recast it for moure maulin'!

By my count, the vote is tied 9-9 between Trigon of Corruption and Engulfing Slagwurm . Like the Vice President in the Senate, I am going to break the tie in favor of Trigon of Corruption ; I do like me some slagwurm, but I feel like the arguments for the Trigon carried a little more weight.
