I know why you're here, so let's get to looking at the finalists! As usual, the cards have been converted into proper "Magic-speak" and comments made by the Head Team can be found after each card. Also, keep in mind that the name of the winning card will be changed to incorporate the name of the evil found within the cocoon.
The Top Ten Entries
The main concern here was that the three abilities granted by Alien Cocoon didn't make it powerful enough for a mythic rare. It was suggested to change flying to shroud.
The only suggested change was that it should be able to search for any green, blue, and black permanent card, instead of just a creature card.
A few changes have already been made to this card by the Head Team. The creature type of this cocoon structure was discussed, and we decided it makes most sense if it were a Construct. So, the creature type was changed to reflect this decision. Secondly, since -0/-1 counters are rarely used these days; they have been changed to -1/-1 counters. Other than these changes, there was some concern that this is underpowered. Suggested changes included allowing it to block creatures it would otherwise be unable to block (such as creatures with intimidate and landwalk) and/or allowing it to destroy all creatures it blocked at end of combat.
The main suggestion here was to have the all lands are Swamps in addition to their other land types always happen, and have the other abilities still happen when it has four or more counters.
This is another creature whose type was changed to Construct. One suggested change was to decrease the mana cost by two colorless mana. Flavor-wise, the Head Team was concerned because we want to make sure it is clear that the creature token this creates represents the animated remnants of the cocoon itself, and not the evil that is contained inside of it, as the evil will be a different card later on. We weren't sure if this card made that clear.
The Head Team didn't have any issues with this entry.
The Head Team didn't have any issues with this entry.
Again, this creature type was changed to Construct. Other than that, it was suggested that it should be able to search for any permanent card with converted mana cost X or less, rather than just a creature card.
This is another creature type that was changed to Construct. It was suggested that instead of having to sacrifice a creature AND a land to get a counter, it should only have to sacrifice a creature OR a land.
The Head Team didn't have any issues with this entry.
Voting
Here's what we're looking for:
1) Each person should vote for one card.
2) Each person should critique the card for which they have voted. Agree or disagree with the Head Team's suggestions and include any other ideas you have to improve the card. Any critiques made on cards for which you did not vote will NOT be put into consideration from the Head Team.
The deadline for voting is Wednesday, October 13 at 11:59 p.m.
I vote Alien Cocoon. Simplicity at its best. Shroud would be a good substitute for flying.

My vote is for Cocoon of Ulgris, but I think CMC would make a good substitute for toughness in the first ability, and maybe have it cost 4 or 5, instead of 3.

Enduring Reaper: what about making it cost 1 less, and keeping the rest of it the same?

Enduring Reaper with a better name, and each creature blocked by E.R. gets one -1/-1 counter.

I like Ulgris' Blightforce!!
maybe make it a creature from any graveyard !!!
October 9, 2010 11:51 p.m.
I'd vote for the blightforce...reword it to "put target permanent card from any graveyard to the battlefield under your control. At the beginning of your next upkeep, pay UBG or sacrifice that permanent". I don't think it'd be good if it said "return" because that implies that it had to have been on the battlefield at some point beforehand and that's not very fun.

These are wicked! i love all these cards :)
But I think that the true winner is Ulgris Blightforce. I can see it being a major part of any Ulgris deck, even just as a backup. Maybe it could give G, B or U at the expense of entering the battlefield tapped?
I also think that Alien Cocoon deserves congratulations, but i think that it could have a more threatening name. And give shroud to the creature. As with blightforce, I think it could give one of the Ulgris mana when tapped

Alien Cocoon gets my vote, and the change to shroud sounds reasonable. Also you could up the power of the card by removing the (1) From the second ability.

Enduring Reaper gets my vote!
4 my taste ulgris' blightforce is way overpowered. A free drop that u pay 3 to rise from the grave and draw a card every turn?
Cocoon of ulgris needs to drop indestructable

i vote for enduring reaper.
i do think that it should be able to block any creatures though (flying, landwalk, intimidate, etc.)

From the look of some of these (Ulgris's Blightforce, for instance. That much repeatable, horrifically powerful card advantage on a LAND should NEVER be allowed), I'm guessing either that you're simulating power-creep 4-5 sets into the future, or whoever's balancing your suggestions is in a coma from a tragic accident (Ulgris's Blightforce, for instance. That much repeatable, horrifically powerful, unconditional card advantage on a LAND should NEVER be allowed).
That said, I think Fester-Brood Cocoon captures the flavor best while being moderately balanced. I think a couple small mechanical changes would be in order, though: make it start with 4 counters to thwart proliferate (having the ability trigger when there are no counters on it), and give it protection from creatures: the protection ability ensures that it can't be broken by Vampire Hexmage -esque effects, as well as flavorfully indicating that it is not OF Ulgris, and thus is unaffected by the dangerous creatures that inhabit said plane.

@Cirrus I agree heavily with you and I think the draw a card clause, at the very leas should be removed. Unfortunately the vast majority of this community are hardcore spikes so of course a really powerful card will generally get the most votes, even if it is game breaking.

just a suggestion for Ulgris Blightforce,
What if the ability made the creature get sacrificed at the end of turn as well? This would allow for a combo with creatures with a "when this creature enters the battlefield" ability, as well as being much more balanced and still powerful enough for a mythic rare. just a thought

or maybe... at the end of your turn .. exile it.. so you can't repeat the process unless you have a creature in your graveyard

I am NOT voting for Blightforce.
But, if Blightforce wins the most votes It needs to be powered down. I would suggest.
Enters the battlefield tapped
(Tap) add 1 to your mana pool.
RGB(tap) Return Ulgris Blightforce to your hand: Put target creature card from your graveyard into the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it. Draw a card.

i agree that ulgris' blightforce needs powered down maybe remove the card draw i think it gives plenty of advantage by returning a creature to play at instant speed
also a thing to keep in mind if were trying to build a set aas close to the real thing is that wizards very rarely makes lands that dont produce mana the most recent being dark depths, terramorphic exspanse and evolving wilds with that said i think blightforce should at least produce a colorless mana
btw my vote has not changed just giving my point of view

i agree. Blightforce is a great concept. The idea of a land bringing creatures back from the graveyard is fairly cool in my opinion. But it does need to be powered down heaps

if you notice 2 of the 3 cards with the most votes currently are lands that both have the ability to return creatures from the graveyard to play just thought that it was kinda funny
October 15, 2010 2:26 a.m.
@leon_raymond You realize that Crucible of souls has the same exact concept but does not need to be powered down at all, right?

Ulgris Blightforce is a broken version of Recurring Nightmare , which is already broken.

Hey, Zylo, just a note: I do think that the crucible needed a bit of a downer on the power level. Playing that land is similar to drawing cards equal to the number of creatures in your graveyard = huge card advantage. Also, imagine it used with Fauna Shaman and its ilk, if the above isn't enough.
October 16, 2010 3:56 a.m.
Gragnoth's Cocoon seems poorly worded, but otherwise I like this one. I think a better wording on the card would be:
When Gragnoth's Cocoon is put into the graveyard from the battlefield, put a 6/6 colorless Legendary Construct creature token named Gragnoth onto the battlefield with wither and 2: Regenerate Gragnoth.

I vote for Urgyx, Crucible of Souls and I would change creature cards to all spells.
