Once again, you guys are awesome! But, you already knew that, didn't you? We got tons of ideas from the Ulgris brainstorm. After some discussion amongst the Head Team, the following decisions were made:
Ulgris' Creature Types:
The main creature types of Ulgris will be:
1) Bat
2) Fish (More specifically, eels)
3) Frog (Which includes toads)
4) Fungus (Which includes mold)
5) Insect (Which includes beetles, cockroaches, gnats, maggots, mosquitoes, and wasps)
6) Leech
7) Lizard
8) Ooze (Which includes goos and slimes)
9) Plant
10) Rat
11) Snake
12) Spider
13) Worm
There were some creature type suggestions that were popular among the community that didn't make this list. The most popular of which was Zombie. Ulgris WILL be the shard that holds zombies, but they won't start appearing here until a plot twist after the shards start to come together. Wurm was also a popular suggestion. Though they fill the same role, Wurm got replaced with Worm for a couple of reasons. First of all, wurms were already chosen as a main creature type of Irindu, and we wanted to keep a differentiation between the two shards. Secondly, worms seem more unintelligent than wurms do, and the Head Team wanted to stress the lack of intelligence found here. This is the same reason why many of the suggestions that had intelligence (such as Merfolk) didn't make this list either.
Ulgris' Themes
Having wither as a keyword on Ulgris created quite a lot of debate, which I personally loved following and found extremely interesting. In the end, however, we decided to keep wither as Ulgris' non-evergreen keyword. Along with wither, Ulgris will have the following themes:
1) Dangerous Creatures (Particularly those with deathtouch, flash, and wither)
2) Defenses (Particularly countering target activated and triggered abilities, regeneration, and shroud)
3) Graveyard Manipulation (Particularly milling and reanimation)
4) Token Creation
5) -1/-1 Counter Effects/Manipulation
Ulgris' Mythic Rare Challenge
Hidden deep within Ulgris' bogs, there lies a large cocoon-like casing. This cocoon pulsates with darkness and within it, a great evil waits to emerge. Both the cocoon and the evil hiding within it are not native to Ulgris. Yet, they seem to belong here. The cocoon itself has impacted the environment around it, and the creatures and plants living around it are particularly viscous, even for Ulgris.
For Ulgris' first card creation challenge, you will be creating this cocoon. This challenge is different than our past challenges, because the card has to fit the flavor behind the cocoon. These are the guidelines you must follow:
1) The card must be a mythic rare.
2) The card must be legendary.
3) The card must be a permanent card, other than planeswalker. This means, you may make it an artifact, creature, enchantment, or land.
4) If the card is an artifact, it must be colorless.
5) If the card has any mana symbols on it, they can only be Ulgris' colors (green, blue, and black).
6) Other than wither, the only keywords that may appear on the card must be evergreen (deathtouch, defender, double strike, enchant, equip, first strike, flash, flying, haste, indestructible, intimidate, landwalk, lifelink, protection, reach, regenerate, shroud, trample, and vigilance).
7) Each person may submit a maximum of four entries total.
8) We will be judging based on the following criteria: a) Effectiveness (Does the card actually work mechanics-wise?) b) Set Cohesion (Does the card fit the flavor for the description of the cocoon?) c) Balance (Is the card too overpowered or underpowered both in general and for its rarity?) d) Creativity (Does the card seem fun or is it a clever design?)
The key here is to be creative and to keep the description of the cocoon in mind when creating your card. As a general reminder, here is Ulgris' mini-desription:
Ulgris is a simple place. Imagine a peat bog with a dense canopy cover that makes everything perpetually dark. The waters in this region are a network of underground rivers, and the standing water in the bogs and estuaries go from salt to brackish to fresh water. The easy way to describe this place is dangerous. Everything is deadly, poisonous, and the ground is covered in writhing bugs. This area has no real society. Most species found here can mate and procreate shortly after they are born and eat nearly anything. Survival is key. There are few, if any, sentient beings found here.
The deadline for entries is Wednesday, October 6 at 11:59 p.m.
For cacoon. Do you mean our idea has to somehow represent or literal cacoon or do you simply mean cacoon in the general "something housing/holding back something else (such as a temple where a great evil creature sleeps)" type sense?
September 30, 2010 2:47 p.m.
@IronHead - use your imagination here. the team was trying to give a vague description so that people could run wild.
It is some kind of structure that is large are has no entrance or exit that will open at some point. It is held in the depth of Ulgris.
Go nuts with it

Chrysalis of the Devourer 3BGU Legendary Creature-Insect
Defender
At the beginning of you upkeep, each player sacrifices all nonland, non-insect permanents they control. Then each player puts a 1/1 green black and blue insect creature token with wither into play for each permanent sacrificed this way.
When When Chrysalis of the Devourer is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, put a legendary 1/1 green, black and blue Insect Horror creature token with devour 3 and trample and named the Devourer into play. 0/3
This helps "keep it simple" by killing everything with abilities on both sides and adding pure combat creatures, and it sets up a big, dangerous surprise if you can break the cocoon.I though about adding annihilator or indestructible to the token to reinforce the otherworldly aspect of the card, but I wasn't sure if they were appropriate to the world.

Devour is a green ability, seeing as gluttonous slime and mycoloth are both mono-green and have it, and it's what makes the mechanic work. If the set is just opposed to the name "devour" because it was seen on jund, then use the below version:

@JaceFace: False. A 0/3 deathtough creature is still very deadly. Why? Oh I don't know, maybe because there's hundreds of enchantments you can put on it giving it power, there's also hundreds of spells that temporarily give it power, and all it needs is +1/+0 to kill your creature.
@Jarrod_0067: I may be wrong but I thin exarkun809 knows that normal artifacts don't have power / toughness, my guess is that he meant it to be an artifact creature. However, even if he didn't, a normal artifact can still have -1/-1 counters on it, they just won't affect it. Changing them to charge counters may take away from the feel of it, it may not, he will have to give his point of view since it's his card. I like how you took it though.

First, want to explain the concept...
The cocoon thing itself has a powerful, life-depleting force to it that affects all that are around it. And inside, it contains a powerful dark and ugly mutant creature, that is a hybrid of species...Bat and Troll.
(I think we really missed the boat by not making Troll a major creature type here. So appropriate. I didn't think of it earlier, either. Hopefully not too late.)
If the cocoon is broken, out comes the creature. The longer the cocoon stays around, the bigger the creature inside will have grown. But if broken by an outside force(thus before the creature was ready to be "born"), then the creature, no matter how big, will be ugly and deformed, yet powerful
GLOOMBRINGER OF ULGRIS
Legendary Enchantment
2UBG
Gloombringer of Ulgris comes into play with an incubation counter on it. At the beginning of your upkeep, put an incubation counter on Gloombringer of Ulgris.
At the beginning of each player's upkeep, that player discards one card, then puts the top 5 cards of his/her library into the graveyard, then places a -1/-1 counter on a creature he/she controls, then receives two poison counters.
If Gloombringer of Ulgris is put into a graveyard from play, put a legendary blue, black, and green Troll Bat Mutant creature card named Skolgroth, the Foul into play, with power and toughness equal to the number of counters Gloombringer of Ulgris had on it at the time it went to the graveyard, with the following abilities:
1U: Skolgroth the Foul gains shroud until end of turn 1B: Skolgroth the Foul gains deathtouch until end of turn 1G: Regenerate Skolgroth the Foul
UBG: Skolgroth the Foul gains flying until end of turn
October 4, 2010 2:45 a.m.
More thoughts on Gloombringer of Ulgris:
I read the storyline for Ulgris, set forth by the design team, and took it seriously. I think this card suggests something created by an outside force, such as the same planeswalker who created Ulgris. The manipulating planeswalker has made a hybrid-species creature ala Frankenstein, and the creature is "incubating" inside a horrid cocoon-like thing that pulsates death outwardly in all directions(thus influencing the nature of Ulgris), awaiting it's time to emerge.
Milling is in there, not as a win-con, but to contribute to graveyard matters(as will discarding), since I'm pretty sure that was a concept for this set. Stated above, it does say Zombies are on the way, so it seems good with that.
Long card-text, I know. Still doable, I think. Just barely.
Could possibly shorten things by cutting the incubation counters, and just setting a P/T for the creature. But I love the idea of the incubation time, and the longer the cocoon lives, the more developed the creature will be. If an opponent can destroy it, they will be rewarded by doing it sooner.
Could also just give it Flying(it is part Bat). But since it is also part Troll, I think that it could fly, but it would take some magical energy(mana) to get that thing into the air.
Could alter the # of -1/-1 counters, poison counters, and/or cards to mill. Originally I was thinking three -1/-1 counters, distributed among any number of critters the player controls. But if this thing comes out on T5, then that might be too much.
Not totally set on the name Gloombringer of Ulgris. Open to ideas. Deathpulser of Ulgris maybe.

Yea, my thinking on the artifact was that it would be an artifact and siphon off/distribute the -1/-1 counters as an artifact (non-creature). I think it could go the way of what Jarrod wrote it to make things easier, but I had it written up the way I did because the Cocoon feels like an entity that is alive... but not necessarily a creature (hence my submissions of all different types of permanents).
Charge counters feel inanimate to me... whereas -1/-1 counters would be more 'alive' I guess I'd say. Even though they'd have no effect on this horrid cocoon object, it's still treated as 'alive'. I wrote it this way because I wanted the statement "The cocoon itself has impacted the environment around it, and the creatures and plants living around it are particularly viscous, even for Ulgris" to fit well, and keeping them as -1/-1 counters felt best.

I swear I've never seen or played Yu-Gi-Oh. So I didn't get the reference. That's okay.
Absolutely feel free to use the time related P/T. As far as I'm concerned, this is all still a think tank, and we're creating this thing as a group. I'm not treating it as a competition. Just contributing ideas. If that triggers an idea for someone else, great. Go for it.

New entry because my last one was a little underpowered: Cocoon of the Great Swarm 3BG
Legendary Creature-Cocoon Defender
This creature can block any number of creatures.
2BG, tap: Copy all Spider, Insect, Worm, Leech, Fungus, Ooze, and Rat creatures on the battlefield. You control all the copies.
3BGU: Sacrifice this creature. Put a green, blue, and black creature token with wither into play named The Great Swarm. The Great Swarm has Power and Toughness equal to the number of Spider, Insect, Worm, Leech, Fungus, Ooze, and Rat creatures on the battlefield and the ability: This card can block any number of creatures.

SO AND SO'S(*) CHAMBER OF HORDES
Cost: 7
Legendary Artifact
Chamber of Hordes comes into play tapped.
(Tap), sacrifice a blue and/or green and/or black creature:
Each player discards a card, then puts the top 5 cards of his/her library into the graveyard. Then remove X creature cards out of any number of graveyards from the game. If the sacrificed creature was:
Black: Put X 1/1 black Mosquito(insect) creature tokens with Flying onto the BF.
Green: Put X 1/1 green Plant creature tokens with Defender and Deathtouch onto the BF.
Blue: Put X 1/1 blue Toad creature tokens with "if this creature deals combat damage to a player, that player receives 1 poison counter. If a player receives 10 or more...blah blah." onto the BF.
*So and So: A yet-to-be-named planeswalker. Either the one for Ulgris, or the one who created the negashards.
Alrighty, there's my mythic that deals in small critters, not big. Seemed Ulgrissy.
The CC and/or activation cost could always be adjusted for proper power balance, if need be. Also I'm not married to the card name.

Love your great swarm concept. Is it still 0/5 to start? Didn't say in the new version. Also I wonder if there is any point to Wither when the creature becomes huge.

Edit: post #64.
You also have to sac the artifact when you drop the horde bomb. Forgot to say that. Then again, might not matter, since you will have depleted graveyards already anyway. Either way then, whichever you like.
