After the voting from last time was compiled, here are our winners to the Monoblack Morglen Challange. After taking into consideration your comments and thoughts on the cards, the design team did make a few slight changes to the original submitted cards.

Sunthorn Ravager by pyrefiend
Basically left him as is.Since it has the potential to be a great agro card the design team thought that 2/1 was a bit more appropriate that 1/2. Other than that it stayed as it was.
Before After
Journey to Revelation by Frostcrow
with a +2/+1 increase and an additional +1/+2 as a token, this felt a lettle too strong since it gave other killer abilities. We figured it is a bit more balanced at giving +2/+0 and +0/+2 respectively. If it becomes a dud of a card that way during playtesting, then we will change it back.
Before After
Elves of Anarchy by Jarrod_0067
Only change to this card is that the losing 1 life was taken off. This move puts it on par with noble heirarch and feels more rare.

Morglen Multicolor Challenge

The next challenge will be to create three of the rares for the Morglen shard. Obviously, there are some guidelines. 1) We are looking for three rares: Creatures, Enchantments, Instants, Sorceries are all fine. At least one of the final cards will be a creature. One will be a Green/Black multicolor card, one will be White/Black multicolor card, one will be Green/White/Black multicolor. 2) No hybrid mana may be used in the casting cost or the activation cost of these cards. 3) Each person can only submit three entries. If you submit more than three, we will only take the last three submissions and ignore the earlier ones. 4) The cards will be judged based on four categories: Effectiveness, Set Cohesion, Balance, and Creativity. Here are a couple of helpful things: 1) Remember that the only keywords that can appear on Morglen cards are the "evergreen" keywords (deathtouch, defender, double strike, enchant, equip, first strike, flash, flying, haste, indestructible, intimidate, landwalk, lifelink, protection, reach, regenerate, shroud, trample, and vigilance). In addition to these evergreen keywords, the keyword that is exclusive to Morglen, Memento (When this creature dies, if it wasn't a token, put a token that is a copy of this creature onto the battlefield.), may be used. 2) We love to see people create their own physical pictures of the cards that they created. Often, they are great looking and really cool, and I encourage you to share them with us. But for our convenience, if you can also type the information directly into the comment, it makes our lives easier. You won't be marked down for not doing this, but copying and pasting text saves a lot of time compared to typing it all up from scratch. 3) Just a reminder, the winning cards may be changed. Be it mana cost or other small things to make the set balanced, your original creation may not be EXACTLY what it was originally, but I promise that we will try our hardest to keep the card as close to its origins as possible. HAVE FUN CREATING! ###The deadline for the Challenge is Tuesday, August 16th, 2011 at 11:59 p.m. Thanks to everyone!
###Information about Morglen. Morglen is filled with wide reaching Savannah and glades, but as one ventures deeper and deeper into the forests and farther from the heart of morglen, the ground becomes slightly bogged and more desolate. ###Storyline/history
In this shard there are two Major tribes, the Gladeparters and the Tharin'l, both of elves. The Gladeparters are centered around true democracy and hold their tribal council with the Tharin'l though they get along less and less as the year go on. Both tribes believe in order in nature and are willing to die for it. Nature is nearly worshiped by these elves in a religious fashion. The Gladeparters led by Doreer, the elder, follow the normal worship of nature and realize the plans of the youth around them but decide as a group to not devise a plan against them. All that they concentrate on is that nature and right will prevail and that they will gladly die protecting both. Both societies have the technology level of an iron age society. They have Iron weapons and armor, yet their buildings are more hut like in nature, some on the ground and some in the trees. Neither architecture nor creating artifacts is a focus of this nation.
###Themes The major themes and keywords of Morglen are Recursion/resurrection, Regeneration, life loss, and ramp
###Creature Types The creature types of Morglen are : Elf, Beast, Plant, Treefolk, Troll, Zombie, Centaur, Wolves Subtypes include: Rogue, Shaman, Druid, Necromancer. #Themes/Mechanics ### Morglen Mechanic After Voting, the new mechanic is Memento (When this creature dies, if it wasn't a token, put a token that is a copy of this creature onto the battlefield.) ### Others The mechanics of course include the evergreen keywords (deathtouch, defender, double strike, enchant, equip, first strike, flash, flying, haste, indestructible, intimidate, landwalk, lifelink, protection, reach, regenerate, shroud, trample, and vigilance) and Memento.
####The general themes according to the voting are Regeneration, Hexproof, Reach, landwalk, Recursion/resurrection, and Ramp.

August 14, 2011 12:36 a.m.

Mpz5 says... #35

No, that would be really cool though.

I found images online and altered the hell out of them.

The first one was a picture of a troll but the troll looked dumb and savage, holding a tree branch/club rather than a staff/wand like I wanted him to. The place it was in was pretty bright and the troll was more grey than green. I altered the colors a lot, darkened the area and made a cool glow on the club to make it look like a staff. I liked how it came out and I love the flavor of the card it'self.

The second one was a picture of Piracy Charm but I made the hands look flesh colored rather than blue and I made the charm this shards colors and a lot cooler looking IMO. I like the way it came out as well and I also liked the versatility of the card. It fits the shard well I think having 3 relevant abilities that all are well within theme but the restrictive cost balances it me thinks.

xD the last one was actually a picture of a girl jumping. The light was from the sun and was shining between her legs really brightly. I cut her out, cropped the grass to where I wanted it and altered the shadows and brightness a lot. It looks the most different from what it was and it looks about how I wanted it to look. As far as the card goes, I love field wipes. The thought that field wipes were pretty bad in this shard crossed my mind and so I decided to fix that if I can get it voted for. I think it's what control players in this shard need.

I'm glad that you liked the images. I hope you liked the cards just as much if not more than that. I really tried to capture the flavor of the shard this time and I'm hoping everyone enjoys the pictures because I did spend some time with them.

I have a few questions about your Oaken Ancient, pyrefiend. I think it's fairly obvious that it would counter stuff like Path to Exile , Wrath of God , or Unsummon . It also ignores stuff like Lightning Bolt . But what about stuff like Dismember or Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite combined with Crovax, Ascendant Hero ? Technically, for Dismember, it's the toughness reduction that puts the Ancient in the graveyard as a state-based action, right (unless it's just going to be countered because Dismember would make it leave the battlefield)? Also, will the Norn and Crovax combo result in the Ancient dying to state-based effects, an infinite loop of Norn and Crovax eternally activating their static abilities and the Ancient countering them, or what?

1st submission. This is a legendary rare creature that has second-level even more recursive version of memento. It might seem overpowered but I think that with legendary, triple colour casting cost, 8 CMC, and base stats of 5/8, I think it's just good. If it's too good perhaps it should lose intimidate though it fits the flavour pretty well to me and only applies to the original creature with only 3 power. Another option could be to drop it to 6 toughness.

It's also dripping with flavour and makes something magic needs more of: green/white spiders and green/black spiders.

It if it had room for flavour text it could say "Kill it from a distance. Wait, I think it's pregnant." -- Vanda.

Each of the submissions could be adjusted to accomodate some of the alternate required colours:

@tmurdock your Bandor card creates an infinite loop for toughness. Toughness of a creature is state-based and it will reassess with each addition, its an infinite summation

tmurdock says... #92

@Lectrys, The combination of vigilance and intimidate on a 3-colour creature was the reason I submitted it with the full shard but if there were to be revisions so all 3 could compete, those are my favourite changes as well.

Also sad to miss out on GW spiders because I think Magic needs them but flavourwise the BGG Mordspindel is just as terrifying and the replacement of W with extra G leading to a bigger swarm also fits with flavour.

Although I also thing G fits the flavour of Day After Judgment because of "regrowth" Life's Finale in NPH is straight up black and making them zombies makes it still work. Might need to drop the # of creatures from 6 to say 4 without green.

August 16, 2011 2:41 p.m.

They would indeed. A static ability that removes him from play would do the trick as well.

@pyrefiend, these scenarios are getting more and more ridiculous, but:

Say someone cast Lightning Bolt on the Oaken Ancient, then someone else cast Snakeform to make the Ancient lose all abilities. Does the Snakeform get countered or not?

August 17, 2011 12:48 a.m.

tmurdock says... #101

I would think that if you cast Lightning Bolt first (and let it resolve), then cast Snakeform it would be countered, but if you cast Snakeform first (and let it resolve) then you could bolt it (or otherwise ping it for 1 in some other way) to kill it.

August 17, 2011 1:04 a.m.

tmurdock says... #102

BTW I changed Day After Judgment to Day of Reckoning because I realized that exile is a lot less clunky than "cannot be regenerated or trigger memento"... also there was a directive to avoid a board wipe from the brainstorming so I thought this was a little more interesting. There may be enough sweepers already, but they usually fill up graveyards - this one doesn't, and it has a one-sided upside. With the uber-exile though, it really need to be heavier on the W than B for the casting cost.

August 17, 2011 3:31 a.m.

nightscape says... #103

@Oaken Ancient discussion, damage dealing cards seem irrelevant due to it having indestructible, which means lighting bolt never would have caused it to leave the battlefield anyway. Pretty sure Snakeform ing it first is a kill though. It should lose both indestructible and its triggered. Honestly it seems like giving it indestructible is actually a weakness, because board wipers which use "destroy" wont trigger the counter, which prevents it from saving all your other creatures.

Just throwing this out there, what if you dropped indestructible and had it just say this: "Oaken Ancient cannot leave the battlefield. (You can't sacrifice or otherwise pay costs or meet requirements that require a card to leave play with Oaken Ancients.)"

@nightscape

Well at this point I can't actually submit a new version of the card, because the deadline has past. If the design team chooses it to be one of the choices in the next vote, it's their prerogative to suggest changes as they see fit.

As for indestructibility being a weakness though, it's really more of a double-edged sword. One the one hand, yes, it stops Oaken Ancient from countering things like Slagstorm , but on the other hand it protects it from damage from creatures so you can chump block to your heart's content. I like the flavor better this way as well. The idea is that the creature is not only extremely tough, but also tangled up in reality such that it's very difficult to pull it out of the battlefield-- so if your opponent drops a Wrath of God , the Oaken Ancient just endures it and your other creatures fend for themselves. If the opponent tries Warp World or World Purge, however, the effect fails outright because the Oaken Ancient is rooting the fabric of reality in place.

The more I think about it, the more I like the way the current version works. But I'm not much of a rules expert so I could be wrong.

@pyrefiend I like the card better the way you have it as well, plus I think it's undercosted if it is designed to counter anything that would target it, but as a 0/3 wall that is impossible to get rid of is perfectly costed.

re: the wording though I don't think it needs indestructible since the ability to not leave the battlefield covers that

one question though - are you intending for it to be able to dodge exile also? i'm guessing you are, but I wonder if the wording of the card should be explicit (if chosen and there is a chance to reword) and say "cannot leave the battlefield or be removed from the game"

August 18, 2011 12:34 a.m.

pyrefiend says... #112

@tmurdock Thanks, I was a bit unsure about the casing cost, since that's an ability I haven't ever actually seen on another card.

As for the matter of exile, I don't think it needs to be more explicit because it would have to leave the battlefield in order to leave the game, by definition.
