Oh Legends. How much do I make fun of you. As stated before, I give this set so much heat because it remains to be my favorite and least favorite set. There's off the wall cards like card:Abyss, Land Tax, and the fabled Mana Drain. Along with UTTER CRAP like the landwalk enchantments and ugh...Kry Shield. Here's another trip back in time to look at some REALLY limited use cards and just some "what were you thinking?" cards.

#Akron Legionnaire
This seems like a good idea. You know...the common legends theme. But really. 8 mana for an 8/4 with a huge drawback and nothing else? F%$# man. I'll double block with my 2 Black Knights and kill it (at the time). Still not good enough? Double block with 2 Grizzly Bears. That I paid four mana. Feel good about your 8 mana? I remember playing only ONE person who used this card in a really bad deck. I remember chumpblocking it forever with my Walking Dead.
ANY aura is better than this guy.
#Any. Mana. Battery.

Somehow Sol Ring exists. Then you had card:Manavault. Then there was a Basalt Monolith in the same set for unknown reasons. Aside from that you had...the mana batteries. Anyone looking at them now would say "Why?" and I even said "Why?" at the time. A few people used them. The only thing they were really good for was casting those over costed legendary creatures. Believe it or not, you actually had TIME to put 2 or 3 charge counters on this thing over the course of a normal game. These were pretty bad and just took up deck space. Shattering them was fun when people would put 4 charge counters on it.
Fun Fact: Gemstone Array fixed these crappy cards.
Another fun fact: These were your rares in 4th edition along with the laces. Yep.
#Cocoon
I have to tap a creature for THREE turns for +1/+1 and flying? Man, just put Flight on it for the same cost. You had ways to untap your creatures but you sure weren't adding them to your deck for this card. But no one likes auras anyway so this is beating a dead horse.
#Craw Giant
I wouldn't say he's BAD per se. In fact, I think highly of this card (purely nostalgia factor)...but look at it. Look at it AGAIN. That's FOUR green mana + another 3. Why is it NOT at least a 6/6? I think the logic was "Craw Wurm is a 6/4 for 4GG, let's give something trample and shitty rampage for 3GGGG with no upkeep!" So trample cost you G. Now we are at 4GGG, then I guess...rampage changes the cost to 3GGGG so we can avoid an upkeep cost? You lost me. Just like you lost his extra 2 defense. Look at Terra Stomper! 6 for an 8/8 trample can't be countered?! Craw Giant does still have awesome flavor text.
#Any Kobold.

It's not so much "What were you thinking" because a 0/1 for 0 is cool. It's "Why are the lords NOT kobolds?" Well...now they are...but look at them man....they are wretched. Why is one giving +0/+1 and TRAMPLE?! To a ZERO ONE! What, is it gonna be a 0/2 Trample? Mind you, two Taskmasters had to be out to even get USE out of the trample bonus! WHAT!? Better hope you don't have out the Taskmaster/Overlord/Drill Sergeant at the same time and no kobolds. Because they sure as hell weren't kobolds at the time. Don't even get me started on card:Roghahh of Kher Keep.
#Elder Land Wurm
When would you pay 7 mana for a 5/5 trampler? When would you pay 7 mana, white heavy, for a creature you can't attack right away with? That's right, never.
#Elder Spawn
..........dood, this is just awful.
#Kry Shield
Whaaaaat? I guess I can stop a trampler? I'll just use Horn of Deafening in the same set! Seriously, what am I going to do with this? Insert obvious "crying" joke. Herp Derp.
#Lifeblood
I'm making fun of this card for different reasons. Lifetap was 2 blue. This is 4 mana. Even back in time white was the life giving color. Lifetap was around since Alpha. This was a rare, Lifetap was uncommon, so why in the nine hells was this 2 mana MORE?
#North Star
Who had FOUR mana laying around IN ADDITION to a regular spell? I'm not talking about kicker costs. This card was bad but no one believed me. Try it yourself. Want to cast that Hidden Path? Hope you got TEN MANA. Craw Giant in a not heavy Green Deck? 11 MANA! Want to Cast Swords to Plowshares but don't have a plains? Try FIVE FRIGGIN MANA! Would you spend six mana to Doom Blade something? I rest my case. Fun Fact: I'm PRETTY SURE Fist of Suns fixed this card.
#Psionic Entity
I know someone out there is saying "This card is not bad!". To that person I say "balderdash! hogwash and such!" This was a RARE. I'm paying FIVE mana to off this creature and another one MAYBE. If this was 4 mana ...you know...since it's RARE and all...it might not be bad. But it's not. Blue didn't have much in the defense enhancement department and you weren't putting this in a white/blue deck at the time. The only clever thing I saw done with this is one fellow put Living Armor into some pseudo-Tim deck so he could have a 2/7. You know...come to think of it he had a Tim and that out which was pretty much destroying me. I still stand by my case of for 5 mana this guy is a tosser.
#Quarum Trench Gnomes
4 mana and I can make your Plains make colorless mana. That's it. That was your rare. Are you REALLY going to Magical Hack this? REALLY? Now you all want to know what Magical Hack is? Well to bad!
#Rapid Fire
I can write a book on how bad this card is and why it shouldn't exist. You already know how bad Rampage is. So for 4 mana you give something first strike. That I'm OBVIOUSLY going to chump block because it's a F^&$ing sorcery. Have fun looking at this in your hand the entire game. By the way, IT'S A RARE.
#Shelkin Brownie
Well...I think everyone already knows how bad he is. But in case you don't...Bands with Other was a limited use of "banding". This was the only set to have it. It was featured on 5 lands that let other legendary creatures "band with other" legendary creatures of the same color. Why not just give them banding...I don't know...but someone felt the need for another keyword AND something to hose it. While I'm on it, why not just have him cancel out Banding OR Bands with Other? I can understand the upkeep part because it fudges with combat to much...but still. Thank goodness it's only common. F@#%ing Ouphes.
#Spiritual Sanctuary
What am I reading? Maybe I can use this in team play? Guess what else? It's also a rare. Think about it. Ajani's Mantra.
#Subdue
wait wait wait....didn't we see this before? Isn't this a Kry Shield? I guess I can throw it at my opponent's creature....and probably not kill it.... Kry Shield wasn't bad enough, so they had to make an instant for it. Another offensive spell opportunity wasted.
#Wood Elemental
Do I REALLY need to go over this? I think every Magic site/blog has bashed this guy to Phyrexia and back.
Editor's Note
A bad card indeed! It can be used sort of. See here: Combo Craziness 3

I think this article boils down to card inflation. I drafted Apocalypse a couple months ago with friends and it was really fun adjusting to what a "good" card was. The games were so slow I threatened my own life playing Phyrexian Arena .

Oh and I tried to make a deck for North Star called Light my way. It was painful building specifically for north star while knowing so many stronger alternatives existed.

@zerotimestatechamp: I don't think thats the case with legends. I've every really old player that I've talked to has said that even at the time legends was a god awful set.

I am a really old player, and Legends was not that great, but it was not that horrible at the time either. Many cards from Legends were used in casual play. And at the time it helped a lot with EDH becoming a format.

I can't stop laughing. This one was absolutely an awesome article. Fk Legends, really. Thanks for the origins of EDH but mostly you suck, big time, bigger time, big ben.

Ok so this article was great, and I agree with the cards sucking lol but somehow I played some of these cards in my old decks lol no wonder why I lost so much... Lol. Actually I only remember playing with elder land wurm, it was in a green and white deck, think I put them in that deck because I traded away my angels... Or was it mono white before I traded my angels away.. Lol idk all I know is I didn't play that deck vary long but I do remember winning a game with two wurms in play, that was after a wrath of god tho. Also I do remember screwing myself with the deck using Armageddon with a elder land wurm in my hand. Lol

yeah i gotta admit i played elder land wurm too. It was really because it was the only huge 'bomb' creature that white had available at the time. Serra Angel was loads better, but for some reason that extra couple of power and toughness actually made a difference once in a while back then.

THOSE CARDS SURE ARE INFERIOR TO CARDS PRODUCED FIFTEEN YEARS LATER HERP DERP.

I mean seriously, you wrote an article on how Legends is bad? Please write more articles about things everyone knows that you can restate in terribly unfunny ways.
