A few weeks ago I held a contest for TappedOut's creatives to help me bring some light to the, err, hiccups we experience here from time to time and I asked them to use the iconic Twitter FailWhale as their inspiration.
In deciding a winner I judged each of the following along mostly two axes:
1) Style—How terrific does it look?
2) Subject—Does it center around something our (terrific) community will like?
I informally solicited a few people, some TappedOut members, some just friends, for some input into the submissions to help arrive at an objective viewpoint. So enough blabbing: let's review the submissions!
In no particular order....
From Jarrod_0067 How about that Darksteel Colossus? So cool! Subjectwise, I personally liked it the most! Stylewise its a strong submission too!
I love how the line of thopters is lugging those cards off...card by card the site is getting fixed! Its great, thanks NecroBane
Our resident Image Ninja M457ERSP00K gave us this. I'm personally not sure what that big bowl is (someone fill me in?!) but I love the thopters and the chains. Its wonderful and the artistry is amazing.
Great water Mpz5. The TappedOut pie chart is really terrific and those thopters are so original. Subject-wise, probably the strongest submission.
Look here! From GriffenValentine. How many people know what that strange dead machine is?! Its a little obscure. Stylistically, wow. Nailed the twitter look.
There Can Be Only One!
So before I announce a winner, I have to thank the submitters again and I hope the rest of you enjoy them as much as I did. I'm going to work out prizes for each of you. I also think I'm going to have similar contests in the future because I was so impressed by the submissions.
Okay, Okay, who Won?
While I felt the subject was a little obscure, I also think its a treat for those who actually do get it. Style-wise, it was dead bang on target. GriffenValentine nailed it—it was the most identifiable as a Twitter FailWhale. I lied about the 'no particular order' because its more convenient to you, the reader, to scroll up and see the last one. =)
Griffen takes the prize: $100 dollar gift certificate at CoolStuffInc.com To the rest of you, if you want a Contact Form and I have your shirt size, please send me your details. If I don't have your size and there's something you want, like feature tokens or an upgrade, please let me know. You all really put a lot of thought into your submissions and I really enjoyed each of them.
So, instead of the Ornithopters message, you'll be seeing this instead! Thanks for reading!
GRATZ GriffenValentine
Amazing work all. I am actually impressed - while I can't say I'm surprised that we have talented folk here on tapped out, I am surprised to see so many original entries.
And yes it is the full art zendikar island (saw it in a deck, and it struck me)
(island 237)

yet why you would need thopters to carry an AIRSHIP still confuses me :/

I'm guessing the airship is broken, which is kinda the point. Anyways, I love the art, thanks guys

Congratulations GriffenValentine.
I loved yours NecroBane great idea and artwork.
M457ERSP00K I liked your use of the zendikar land. Good idea for sure.
I'm just happy that mine was deemed the strongest submission subject-wise.
Good contest everyone, I enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next one.

Thanks man. I loved the idea, I just wish that I knew exactly what yeaGO! was looking for when I made it. It would have been hard to do a silhouette of it and make it look right though and the one that won did do a good job of that.

Whoops. Wouldn't have been hard to fix if mine was chosen but it wasn't anyway.
If you do ever want to use mine for something let me know and I can fix/edit it.
