Ability should be interesting in playtesting!

Inspiration and creative parameters of Sorok

Sorok is a land of vast mountains, lush valleys, rushing rivers and large lakes.

Creatures of Sorok

Dwarves

Dwarves are the major power in Sorok. Their wizards and artisans use the gems and materials gathered by the miners to make powerful equipment. Dwarves are known to be stubborn, loyal, a bit ponderous, and resolute. Dwarves live in the mountains they are born from, having vast underground cities. Dwarven nomads search the tunnels for rareties and treasures, while Dwarven scouts keep an eye the other races.

Goblins

Not your average goblins by any means, the Goblins of Sorok are actually somewhat intelligent and restrained, if a bit out there. They have wizards and artisans that use pilfered materials to make equipment that is well, a bit risky. Their settlements are normally in the valleys, with tall (if shaky) homes. Goblin advisers are selected from the most intelligent of the tribes and mostly try and rein in the more outlandish ideas of the others.

Merfolk

The Merfolk of Sorok inhabit the deep clear lakes of Sorok using the rivers as fast transportation (at least downhill). While not as numerous as the Dwarves or Goblins, the Merfolk are well versed in the control magics and hold their own in the rare conflicts.

Noggles

Noggles are the red headed stepchild of Sorok. Living near the Goblins, they tend to be the pranksters, rabble-rousers, and thieves of the societies.

Birds

Birds are abundant in Sorok, both large and small. Everything from eggs to rocs in the high reaches.

Drakes

Drakes make their homes in the mountains and caves. Some drakes have been known to be raised from the egg by adventurous goblin riders.

Griffins

Griffins are one the major predators in Sorok, and have mostly driven the drakes off the high reaches. While not sentient, the Griffins are highly intelligent and serious in manner.

Themes/Keywords/Mechanics.

The major themes and keywords of Sorok are : Bounce, Colored Non-Creature Artifacts and Equipment, Counter-spelling, Double Strike, Flying, Haste, Legends, Resolve, and Vigilance.
Clamp has been renamed Resolve (Spells, counters, or abilities cannot change this creature’s power and toughness from their printed values)

The Sorok Gold Rare Challenge

The next challenge will be to create three of the rares for the Sorok shard. Obviously, there are some guidelines.

1) We are creating three cards again this round: 1) Blue /Red , one Red / White, and one Red / White / Blue.

2) Each person may submit a maximum of three entries total. You may submit any combination of creature, sorcery, enchantment, or instant for your three entries. Remember that colored Artifacts/Equiptment are allowed (just no colored artifact CREATURES), so go nuts. You may also submit any combination of the two colors for this challenge (could be 3 blue/red cards, 3 red/white cards, could be all RWU, or could be a mix).

3) The cards will be judged based on four categories: Effectiveness, Set Cohesion, Balance, and Creativity.

Here are a couple of helpful things:

1) Remember that the only keywords that can appear on Sorok cards are the “evergreen" keywords (deathtouch, defender, double strike, enchant, equip, first strike, flash, flying, haste, indestructible, intimidate, landwalk, lifelink, protection, reach, regenerate, shroud, trample, and vigilance). In addition to these “evergreen” keywords, the keyword that is exclusive to Sorok, Resolve (Spells, counters, or abilities cannot change this creature’s power and toughness from their printed values), may be used.

2) We love to see people create their own physical pictures of the cards that they created. Often, they are great looking and really cool, and I encourage you to share them with us. But for our convenience, if you can also type the information directly into the comment, it makes our lives easier. You won't be marked down for not doing this, but copying and pasting text saves a lot of time compared to typing it all up from scratch.

3) Just a reminder, the winning cards may be changed. Be it mana cost or other small things to make the set balanced, your original creation may not be EXACTLY what it was originally, but I promise that we will try our hardest to keep the card as close to its origins as possible.

HAVE FUN CREATING!

The deadline for the Challenge is Friday,Feb 11th, 2011 at 11:59 p.m. Thanks to everyone!

Have a question about the Collector Stone. It says you can bounce a spell from the stack if it's mana cost is less than or equal to the number of counters on the Stone. But how do you put counters on it?

I noticed you mentioned that it used to have an X cost; maybe that was the original intent? That doesn't seem overpowered. You could also make it an upkeep trigger, similar to Powder Keg, which would be pretty interesting.

Thanks.

Hey everyone,

Glad to see the gemstone thing starting to come to life. Also want to say that despite the minor flare-ups at the end of last session, I really think this is a terrific group, and I have a lot of respect for the minds that we have here.

HERE'S AN IDEA that I want to pitch. It came up before, but I think I should say it again:

Think about gemstones... they are mineral materials with names. Quartz, topaz, hematite, opal, garnet, jasper, oxyx, pyrite, etc. I propose that OUR GEMSTONES be like that. Except that they are not of earth, they are of Sorok. So we would "invent" our own fictitious gem names.

Examples:

I have already worked with VINTIMITE(blue/white mana, has an "attraction" power that enables creatures to block multiple attackers, because they are all pulled in toward the vintimite source.

I also did something hypothetical with KARTHRACITE. It involved red/white mana and double-strike, if I recall correctly.

So the gem names that we invent would be part of the names of the cards. Dwarfs use the Sorok gems to make equipment. That is why our artifacts are colored. They are MADE OUT OF GEM MATERIALS...not metal. That's what is special about Sorok. At the same time, the energies of these gems are so powerful, that they overwhelm non-sorok natives, and thus give them weakened P/T. But...Sorok many natives are immune(they have Resolve...get it?)

So, I wanted to throw that out there again. Not trying to dictate, by any means. I think maybe this got missed/forgotten from before, so I said it again.

Hope some of you like this idea!

@Unas:

Looking at your Rild Griffin Master. I like it. Wanted to point out that something that we talked about in brainstorming was the idea of an alliance of dwarfs + griffins, vs. an alliance of goblins + drakes. Something to consider, if you agree with that theme. I don't know if you would be interested in changing anything about your card, to fit that. Still a perfectly playable card. But I thought you might be interested in knowing that, since I don't remember seeing your name around before.

Goblin Egg Market

1RWU

Enchantment

Whenever a Goblin you control deals combat damage to a player who controls a Drake, put an egg counter on Goblin Egg Market.

2U, Remove an egg counter from Goblin Egg Market: Put a 1/3 blue Drake creature token with flying onto the battlefield.

~~~~~
Red because it's goblins, white because it's commerce (civilization/community), blue because it's drakes. Cheap because this feels like something you'd want out sooner in a game, but I'm not convinced it's not undercosted.
Could VERY easily be converted to a creature if they fits or balances better. Make it Goblin Egg Thief, it puts 0/2 defender tokens named Drake Eggs on the field, the eggs have "when this goes to the graveyard but a 1/3 blue drake onto the field".
Ravil, Tensed Muscle
Flying, Resolve
Whenever Ravil, Tensed Muscle blocks, tap it. After the combat damage step, it loses resolve until end of turn.
At the beginning of your end step, if Ravil, Tensed Muscle is untapped, you may have it deal damage equal to its power to target creature or player. If you do, tap it.
2/5
~~~~~

I was looking at the winners from the last round and set about designing a pair of drake legends designed to be opposite-but-equals for the griffins.

This is Susurrus, the Breath of Sorok's partner. What's the opposite of a breath? Holding your breath, like you're tensed up. From there, it was designing a creature who had the feel of something waiting, taut and poised, and whose abilities played off Susurrus'.

If both he and Susurrus are on the field, they sort of cancel each other. He can absorb Susurrus' attacks all day, but if he does, he can't shoot anything; but if Susurrus doesn't attack and give him a reason to tap down, he gets damage regardless of Susurrus' ability.

(The other drake, incidentally, was called Nisth, Moonshroud of Sorok and sent equipment back to its owner's hand with combat damage, directly threatening Olarin, but I didn't feel like I was balancing it right and Ravil seemed a more interesting card.)

February 11, 2011 3:44 p.m.

I see bounce as a keyword. What exactly do u mean by that? Is it a sorok keyword or do u mean the returning of stuff to our hands?

February 11, 2011 6:07 p.m.

It's the player-slang for returning things to hand. Unsummon , Regress , Disperse , and Boomerang are all examples of "bounce" spells.

I wanted to combine two of my fav cards, Mystic Snake and Blightning I took away the discarding part as that is black and the creature aspect of the card is a goblin rideing a drake. This idea also came from the guildpact card, the one with the two wizards... Srry can't remember the name.

This guys downside is that he is legendary, so casting more than one destroys both unless u use the 3 dmg to kill the one on the board. Lol

Hope u guys like these two!

Entry #3

Nutrexsus RWU

Legendary Artifact - Gemstone

Spells you cast cost R W U less to cast.

"Many talk about a legend of a drake turned into a powerful being after eating one of these rare color changing stones"

I like this idea because its like an easy button for a R W U deck. Cards like Doj are easier to cast in a 3 color deck. And a R W U card costs nothing to cast. This card doesn't reduce generic cost of a card, only takes away one R W or U or the combination of the three.

The flavor txt hints of a drake turned powerful being, I am refering to Drake turned Dragon as in Numot, the Devastator because of his casting cost and because he doesn't have a story or origin.

Card Name: Illusion Delta Mana Cost: 8UR Type Line: Enchantment Text: Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery, you may pay X. If so, copy that spell X times. You may choose new targets for the copies.

Card Name: Shimmerflare Mana Cost: 2WR Type Line: Instant Text: Shimmerflare deals 5 damage to target creature or player. Tap all creatures target player controls. Those creatures don't untap during that player's next untap step.

Card Name: Lightning Maelstrom Mana Cost: 3WUR Type Line: Enchantment Text: Whenever a player casts an instant or sorcery, that player exiles it. That player then puts a white, blue, and red 3/3 Elemental creature token onto the battlefield with flying, vigilance, and haste.

Out of all the cards on this list, I'm betting for Illusion Delta.

February 12, 2011 4:03 a.m.

MagnorCriol says... #56

Yeah. Note how the Replicate keyword was generally costed at the same price as the mana cost (though there are a few cases where it should've been lower - looking at you, Pyromatics ) and anything that can copy a spell tends to either be one-shot or expensive. The ability to copy some of the most powerful instants and sorceries in the game needs to cost far more than 1 colorless per copy.

I like the idea of the effect. Feels like it'd basically have to be a mythic, however, even if you raised the cost to copy.

Sorry about duplicate post -- I screwed up with the formatting.

Griffin Firelancer

I may want to play around with the wording. The idea is that this is a night that can pick-off charging ground-based infantry while defending a castle or something.

Var'tukh, Goblin Doge

The idea is this guy is the leader of the Goblins in Sorok. The term "Doge" is a reference to the high magistrate position in the old Republic of Venice. It was an elected position, where the Doge could be elected from the heads of any of the quasi-noble merchant houses of Venice. I thought that had a little more flavor than a pure monarchy in this context, as it was specified that the Goblins were a bit more learned and had elected advisors, yet more archaic than a full-blown representitive democracy like is common today, and thus more fitting for a fantasy setting.

As it was mentioned that there were Wizards, I wanted to use bounce. The fact that he is a keeper of law makes him white, as does the life gain. The first two abilities, though, are all classic red Goblin, and demonstative of his ability to mobilize goblin forces.

@adt6247 - It would be worded like Cunning Giant:

"If Cunning Giant is unblocked, you may have it assign its combat damage to a creature defending player controls."

so

If Griffin Firelancer is unblocked, you may have it assign its combat damage to target creature without flying.

It would be too OP for 3 CMC. Make it 4 and it will be more fair.

Also, the planeswalker has already been decided

@ Jarrod_0067 and MagnorCriol:

Timmy will love this card. By the way, I don't think it's that overpowered. When ten mana rolls around you'll either have lost or have won the game. Then again, in multiplayer this will be like Consecrated Sphinx .

Updated text on Griffin Firelancer. I don't think making it a 4 CMC card will balance it -- I think that makes it unplayable. I could see this:

Flying, Resolve. If Griffin Firelancer is unblocked, you may pay [R] to have it assign its combat damage to target creature without flying.

Sorta making it a repeating lightning bolt. I'm not convinced it's too good as is, however. Is it even as good as Vampire Nighthawk ? Resolve, here, is actually more of a hinderance, as there's no way to juice it.

I agree with Jarrod. 4cmc for Griffin Firelancer. Consider Roc of Kher Ridges . 4 cmc for 3/3 and just flying.

Imagine if firelancer got double strike. Easy enough with R/W(and being a knight). His ability triggers twice.

Btw, I would enjoy seeing a combo of your griffin being cast when my equipment entry...post #25, is already on the board.

That would be fun!

good point with Roc of Kher Ridges however that was costed as such for a few reasons. Power level was lower back then and it is a mono red flyer.

Contrarily Skyknight Legionnaire is more recent and is a 2/2 flying haste for 1RW and a common. That would indicate that to make it a rare, it would need to be stronger. So a +1/+0 boost and triggered ability is not that far off power wise.

I don't know that I would consider rarity to mean necessarily "stronger". To me, common, uncommon, and rare has more to do with what kind of a function the card serves in a deck lineup. Maybe that's just me.

I'm not explaining this as well as I want to, so I'll use an example instead:

Do you make a 1/2 version of Llanowar Elves (same cost), and call it an uncommon, or make it a 2/1 and call it a rare? To me, that doesn't work.

That's more what I'm getting at. So by the same token, I don't think you make a stronger version of Skyknight Legionnaire , with the same cost, and call it a rare.

We could maybe throw out Roc of Kher Ridges , and say it's outdated. But I think Skyknight Legionnaire is actually a good argument in favor of a cost boost to the griffin. 2/2 haste vs. 3/2 with a strong trigger ability, to me, is a mismatch. I can't see those two with the same cost.

Also I would point to Wasp Lancer . 3/2 no trigger vs. 3/2 with trigger.

If the rarity is an issue, then I think it makes more sense to say that a certain card is maybe just not a rare.

I hear what you're saying, but I think I would say I'm still on the side of 4cmc.

Wasp Lancer uses the either/or mana types, which makes it possible to put in more decks or mono color decks.

Vampire Nighthawk is still a stronger card, and is only a single color.

If the card existed as is, though it is a strong card, it would still get almost no play outside of EDH or limited, because who plays RW? Making it 4CMC makes it unplayable outside of limited.

Jarrod_0067 says... #68

I play RW, the best color combination too. I say it is a good card, but resolve does nothing for it. It's actually probably fairer since it isn't getting boosts. Maybe just make it a 2/2 and call it even

I don't have time to read all these concept cards so I apologize in advance if I make a card similar to a previous entry.

Jarrod_0067: Small point here. Resolve works just as well for the firelancer, as it does any other creature. Look at posts # 19, 25, 26, and last part of 30, and consider the combo.

Resolve works IF we make it work. It's a tricky mechanic, because by itself, it does nothing. It really HAS TO combo(as far as I can see), even if the combo is an opponent's attempt to lower P/T.

Also, this is one of those cards that would be just as good in another shard, UNLESS it has resolve. Without resolve on this guy, we may as well have just made a card for the B/W/R shard. We really have keep to eye on that kind of thing in these challenges.

And I think you are right about 2/2, call it even.

adt6247:

Personally, I think Vampire Nighthawk is flat-out OP. I'm not going to base a cost comparison with that thing.

You are right about Wasp Lancer being a little easier to cast. But I do think that small difference is outweighed by the trigger ability. It's a creature-killer. Yeah, it's conditional(and as I read more closely, I see now that double strike would not make it trigger twice), but as a flyer, has a good chance of triggering. Pretty significant.

Honestly 3 1/2 cmc would probably be perfect, but we can't do that : )

I think Jarrod's idea is the way to go.

I want to say it would be a very nice Sorok card if we can get it just right. Good going.

@ vic - How does it not have anything to combo with. You said yourself that it is defense against opponents lowering the p/t. And with is a keyword of one of the shards. How is resolve not helpful there?

Really we need to stop making assumptions about what the next 600 cards are going to be. There are only 27 cards in the block so far everyone, ways to exploit mechanics will come, but it is a slow process
