Hello again, today we are going to look at Mondays and Tuesdays
spoiled cards from Mirrodin Besieged. I have been waiting a while to
see, think about, and talk about cards out of the new set, so I am just
going to jump on in.
Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas
First we take a look at the card everyone has been wanting to see since we saw art for it Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas. So he cost 2UB and starts with 3 counters. Then +1 look at the top five cards of your library. You may reveal an artifact card from among them and put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order. Now if you play a lot of artifacts this can be good but I think most the time this effect is going to be a let down. Next we got -1 and target artifact becomes a 5/5 artifact creature. Now that's a great effect it can turn any artifact into a 5/5 guy and it is not till end of the turn. Last we get -4 and target player loses X life and you gain X life, where X is twice the number of artifacts you control. Now this reminds me of something like Garruk Wildspeaker or Sarkhan the Mad were you have to have something on the field to make it work but I think it is good. Now I have mix feeling about this card. Its no Jace 2.0 but not every planeswalker will be or should be. I think he does his job well, I just don't know if there is a deck in standard that can use him; but, maybe with some help one will be made for him. |
Blightsteel Colossus
Blightsteel Colossus is a card that we have kinda seen before with Darksteel Colossus but this time he can end the game in one swing. Blightsteel Colossus cost 12 to play and has trample and infect and is indestructible. Also if Blightsteel Colossus would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, reveal Blightsteel Colossus and shuffle it into its owner's library instead. Now I love this card because I love infect. I don't think this helps just your everyday beatdown infect deck, but what this will do is make ramp infect decks and combo infect decks good. Just ramping into this guy can be good but Shape Anew and Summoning Trap are going to be dropping this guy into play most of the time. Now how good I don't know yet, but I will be playing around with it at FNM level. And it really does not need to be said but he is a bomb in limited. |
Bonehoard
Bonehoard is another card with living weapon and one I really like. It cost 4 to play and 2 to equip. Equipped creature gets +X/+X, where X is the number of creature cards in all graveyards. Now since it has living weapon it comes into play with a 0/0 guy equipped with it. Now in limited this card could be good for metalcraft and infect. In standard I just feel like this card has to find a home somewhere. Maybe Quest WW or control decks or maybe a new deck all together. |
Brass Squire
Now when I saw Brass Squire it made me think of Quest WW deck and Kor Outfitter. For 3 mana you get a 1/3 body that can tap to attach target equipment you control to target creature you control. Now this makes me think that maybe the Quest WW deck future may be with this guy and Tempered Steel. Maybe more artifact beat down with quest in it. |
Myr Welder
Next we got Myr Welder. For 3 mana you get a 1/4 body and you tap it to exile target artifact card from a graveyard. Myr Welder has all activated abilities of all cards exiled with it. Now this card be better than I think but there is not just a lot of things that it can steal and be useful. I just don't see it with the card. Upside is that it can't be killed by Lightning Bolt. |
Phyrexian Revoker
Phyrexian Revoker is Pithing Needle on a body. Now you can't shut down lands with it but it will be good to have something to shutdown planeswalkers and can go in any sideboard. So its 2 mana for a 2/1 and as Phyrexian Revoker enters the battlefield, name a nonland card. Activated abilities of sources with the chosen name can't be activated. I think this card is going to see a lot of play in standard even if it is just in sideboards. In limited it could be good to but this is just one of those cards that is going to be best coming out of the sideboard. |
Shimmer Myr
Shimmer Myr is a 2/2 for 3 and has flash and you may cast artifact cards as though they had flash when it is on the field. Now this is a card that I could see being big in limited and maybe finding a home in standard. This is something we could see get better after the last set of the block is out. The better the artifacts in the card pool the better this guy will be. |
Sphere of Suns
Next we take a look at Sphere of the Suns. Its an artifact that cost 2 to play and comes into play tapped and with three charge counters on it. Then you can tap it to remove a charge counter from Sphere of the Sun and add one mana of any color to your mana pool. I could see this being good in limit to help even out your mana or splash a third color. |
Thrun, the Last Troll
Lets take a look at Thrun, the Last Troll. Now I love this card because it will be hard for control decks to deal with, well any deck really. He is 2GG to play for a 4/4 that can't be countered or the target of spells or abilities your opponents control plus it plus it regenerates for 1G. Now that is one hard card to kill. You have a few cards like Day of Judgment and Ratchet Bomb and that's only if they can't regenerate. There are a few more things like Gatekeeper of Malakir that sees play in Vamps and then other less played cards like Consuming Vapors and Destructive Force. I see this card being played, but it just seems like after the opponent plays a titan, I just don't think this guy does much to matter. |
Green Sun's Zenith
Next we look at Green Sun's Zenith. XG to play at sorcery speed to search your library for a green creature card with converted mana cost X or less and put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle your library. Shuffle Green Sun's Zenith into its owner's library. Now this card will see play. Being able to seach out cards like Avenger of Zendikar!!!, Elvish Archdruid, Ezuri, Renegade Leader, Fauna Shaman, Gaea's Revenge, Lotus Cobra, Oracle of Mul Daya, Primeval Titan, Putrefax, and Vengevine for just one more green mana than there cost and put it onto the battlefield will find it it way into decks like Valakut, Eldrazi Green, Elves, Fauna Shaman/Vengevine decks and even Infect. |
Viridian Corrupter
Now we look at a card I think will be a good card in limited and a great sideboard card for infect decks Viridian Corrupter. So for 1GG you get a 2/2 infect guy that when it comes into play you get to blow up an artifact. Now like I said, I think this card is going to be great in limited at 3 mana for a 2/2 body and artifact destruction is something that really will help infect in limited and something infect can use in the sideboard for standard. |
Rot Wolf
Another great infect card for limited. Rot Wolf is a 2G for a 2/2 body and whenever a creature dealt damage by Rot Wolf this turn is put into a graveyard, you may draw a card. Another 2/2 body for 3 mana with infect and gives you a reason not to trade with it on blocks. Now you can also do something like swing with it into a 3/3 body and then use other card to finish it off. Most of the time you would not want to do this, with Rot wolf's effect you would still get to draw. Now its still something you may not want to do, but not bad if you really need to kill something. |
phyrexian Hydra
Ok now we take a look at Phyrexian Hydra. 3GG for a 7/7 infect guy. Now when I looked at this I was like ok this card is going to have a huge draw back, but really he gets dealt damage in from of -1/-1 counters. Which is bad but I still see the upside. In limited he is going to be hard to deal with and you are going to have to throw a lot of cards at it to knock it down. At FNM it can take down titans for one less mana as a sort of spot removal, this card is still going to take two or three cards to kill it. I like this card and I will be playing it at FNM, but I don't know how much it will see play other than that. |
Fangren Marauder
Fangren Marauder to me stands out to be a good limited card if infect does not just rule everything. Its 5G for a 5/5, so a big body and whenever an artifact is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, you may gain 5 life. Now most people will read this guy and be like "great in limited" and I think so too, if infect is not the strong deck because this guy is just a body vs infect, but 5 life just for artifacts going to the yard is very strong. But at 6 mana its not going to see standard play. |
Red Sun's Zenith
Red Sun's Zenith is a sorcery and cost XR to play and Red Sun's Zenith deals X damage to target creature or player. If a creature dealt damage this way would be put into a graveyard this turn, exile it instead. Shuffle Red Sun's Zenith into its owner's library. In limited I can see this being good removal and a way to finish someone off but in standard I just don't see it being played, we have so many good burn spells right now. |
Kuldotha Flamefiend
Kuldotha Flamefiend is a card that I think will be good in limited because it can kill up to 4 guys on your opponents side of the field. Its 4RR to play for a 4/4 and when it comes into play you may sacrifice an artifact. If you do, Kuldotha Flamefiend deals 4 damage divided as you choose among any number of target creatures and/or players. In standard it is over priced at 6 mana because of that titan range and this guy is no titan. |
Flestermite
Flensermite may just look like a infect limit filler, but I see more. In limited it may not do much, but in a Livewire Lash deck that I have played around with when infect first came out, it may be good. Flensermite is 1B for a 1/1 infect lifelink guy. Now the Livewire Lash infect deck lives on 2 drop infect guys so it can hook up with it and a few pump spell give your guy power and deal infect damage to the other player and then swinging with a big infect guy. This guy gives up another guy for the deck and can give use life points while doing infect damage. So maybe nothing more then a good FNM card. |
Phyrexian Vatmother
Phyrexian Vatmother reminds me of Plague Sliver. Big body for 4 mana and hurts you every turn. Ok so Phyrexian Vatmother is 2BB for a 4/5 body with infect and at the beginning of your upkeep, you get a poison counter. Now if you are not playing vs infect then this card is so good. A good casting cost big body is what infect needs more of and this guy gives it to us. Now yes, if he sits out there for 10 turns you lose, and you may be thinking "well when is that going to happen". Well playing vs control, it could happen more then you think. In standard I think this guy will see play and in limited it could be a little tricky vs infect mirror match. |
Consecrated Sphinx
Consecrated Sphinx is a good card but right now with titans is just out matched. Its 4UU for a 4/6 flying guy that whenever an opponent draws a card, you may draw two cards. Now I think the effect is great and may find a home in control builds but in the late game, I just don't know how great this guy will be. I feel like this card has hope because its effect is so good, but for now I don't see it. But down the road we could be talking about how good this guy is. |
Mitotic Manipulation
I think Mitotic Manipulation is going to be a good combo card. Its 1UU to play a sorcery and look at the top seven cards of your library. You may put one of those cards onto the battlefield if it has the same name as a permanent. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order. Now I have been thinking about this card and I think it could be good in Conley Woods U/G wave deck. I think it will be a win card more than anything else but I think it is wroth looking into. |
Steel Sabotage
Steel Sabotage is U to play to counter target artifact spell; or return target artifact to its owner's hand. Now I really like this card for limited. It may even see some play sideboards in standard. Where some of the best bombs are artifacts a one mana hard counter is great and even if it gets into play you can buy yourself some time by sending it back to there hand. |
Vedalken Infuser
Vedalken Infuser is a 1/4 guy for 3U and at the beginning of your upkeep, you may put a charge counter on target artifact. Now this card to me seems like limited filler. Almost all proliferate guys out class this guy and with proliferate you can put a counter on everything with counters, this guy only gives one to something with charge counters. |
Leonin Relic-Warder
Leonin Relic-Warder is WW for a 2/2 and when it comes into play you exile target artifact or enchantment. And when Leonin RelicWarder leaves the field return the exiled card to the battlefield under its owner's control. I think this card will be pretty good in limited and may have a role in standard but I think this is one card we will just have to wait and see how it plays out. |
Phyrexian Rebirth
Phyrexian Rebirth is 4WW to destroy all creatures, then put an X/X colorless horror artifact creature token onto the battlefield, where X is the number of creatures destroyed this way. This card reminds me of Martial Coup but you get one one big guy and not a lot of little guys. I think in the right deck this could see some play and is a bomb in limited. |
Victory's Herald
Victory's Herald is 3WWW for a 4/4 flying guy and whenever Victory's Herald attacks, attacking creatures gain flying and lifelink until end of turn. I think this card could be a bomb in limited but will not see much play. The WWW in it cost is a lot and right now I don't see it being very good. |
Well I am glad we have started to see cards from the new set and I am
ready to see the whole set and get my hands on some cards and start
playing with these new cards. Well till next time have fun and play
hard.
by the way, Phyrexian Hydra & card:Victory's Herald are each the holo rare fronts for two of the 4 intro packs Mirrodin Besieged has to offer :3
both are vastly different cards, but incredible in their own respect.
i can't wait to see what kind of new deck archetypes those and the rest of the Mirrodin Besieged cards mold for the year of 2011 :)

I think infect will see competitive standard. U/B Control just became U/B infect control.

Extended Blightsteel Colossus starring Tezzeret (both editions).

I like this article but in the future you really needn't explain the function of each card. I read your description just after reading the card anyways. Interesting read though!

Dear SnowMage87: Thank you for getting involved and writing articles -- I love these sorts of pieces. However, as a journalist, here are a few tips (and I'm sorry for doing this in the comments, I just don't know how else to get hold of you -- I'm not trying to be rude or offensive:
1) assume there is a 'why' being asked after each of your statements. for instance:
"Now if you play a lot of artifacts this can be good but I think most the time this effect is going to be a let down."
Why will it be a letdown? that's where the article really happens. Do some analysis, don't just read the cards to us.
2) Stop using the words 'Now' and 'Well' to start sentences. It's like public speakers saying 'um,' or 'ah' or 'like'. unnecessary and distracting.
3) Use complete sentences. in the 'bonehoard' entry, you have
"Maybe Quest WW or control decks or maybe a new deck all together."
that's a sentence fragment. your piece will flow much better if you avoid them.
Best regards,
Word-nerd landot

You are underrating Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas . I love that card. It digs up an artifact with his +1 ability, which is very strong. His -1 ability changes a Myr to a 5/5 beatstick. His -4 ability ends the game. Hopefully it won't go up in price..
Also, Thrun, the Last Troll is overrated. I see one more reason to buy 4 copies of Mindbreak Trap . If card:Gaea's Revenge didn't kill control, then why should this? My Mono-Green Ramp will love this, however.

Thrun cost 4 so I think it could make things hard for control not kill it

My thoughts,
Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas is only good because 4CC although his abilities limit him to a deck that has not proven to be completive.
Blightsteel Colossus fun idea, cost is too high to hard cast even with ramp, Shape Anew would work but youd have to manipulate your library in order to insure the combo goes off. Truth be told I dont think blightsteel is worth stacking your deck full of Ponder s and Shape Anew
Bonehoard interesting combo piece Why is this colorless?
Brass Squire bla bla Argentum Armor bla bla.
Myr Welder really wizards, another card that brakes legacy but does nothing for standard?
Phyrexian Revoker Its no Vampire Hexmage but not bad. If it could stop triggered abilities Id be all over it (Im looking at you Titans)
Shimmer Myr My friend runs a vedalken deck Im sure he has 4 preordered already.
Sphere of the Suns SUCK!
Thrun, the Last Troll This will see some completive standard play. Ill be watching.
card:Green Sun's Zenith Same as above
Viridian Corrupter , Rot Wolf & Phyrexian Hydra Withholding judgment until I see if we get the 1 drop infector
Fangren Marauder a six drop common mostly junk
card:Red Sun's Zenith another one of Fireball 's spinoffs that is not as versatile as Banefire
Kuldotha Flamefiend without the sacrifice Id say playable but JUNK
Wow this is taking 4ever.
Flensermite I like it. Its one of the better 2 drop infect creatures.
Phyrexian Vatmother My deal with this card is lack of evasion and they already gave us Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon . However It does cost 1 less
Consecrated Sphinx I want this card to be good its just not.
Mitotic Manipulation Although fun to think about there are just too many other variables you have to control in order for it to work as good as I want it.
Steel Sabotage A good card for this set, will get lots of play at FNM
Vedalken Infuser You said it perfect.
ok, ok so only three more.
Leonin Relic-Warder Why does... but if... then youll... >speechless<
Phyrexian Rebirth Take that goblins.
card:Victory's Herald Should be fun to see if games will last long enough to see this card hit the table when playing mono or mostly white and if at that point an army has been amassed. Maybe this will fit well with Battle cry.
BTW how cool is it that my screen name now has a MTG reference. BATTLE CRY !!!

A lot of the cards are crazy EDH cards, and I don't think that's by accident.
Blightsteel Colossus in a Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon EDH with ramp? Amazing!
Thrun, the Last Troll Another good mono-green general.
Consecrated Sphinx is stunning card advantage in any deck that has Howling Mine - Font of Mythos - Jace Beleren - [kami of the crescent moon]] - probably others I can't think of...
January 23, 2011 2:37 p.m.
so, what does 8 mana mean to me? It means a 5-point Genesis Wave and then praetor's counsel next turn.
January 23, 2011 4:50 p.m.
Describing what each card does is not required if you have the card sitting right there! Might make these articles a little easier to make and read. Just saying.

@ LegionKM I write it and then I pass it on to get pics and stuff. I did not know that the pics was going to be that big and right there or I would have not put what the card did in my writing about each card.
January 24, 2011 12:46 p.m.
YEEESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
THEY DID IT!
THEY MADE AN INSTANT TRAMPLE CARD!!!!!
"Unnatural Predation" cost - G "Target creature gets +1/+1 and gains trample till end of turn"
PLAYSET.
NAOOO.
January 24, 2011 11:58 p.m.
GALVANOTH IS GOING TO GET SOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH PLAY.
in Pyromancer Ascension decks and RDW for sure.
soooooo broken!
its going to get a lot of play in extended & legacy too, what with Brainstorm , Index , and card:Sensei's Divining Top top cards in those formats.
i mean honestly, such an amazing card.
January 26, 2011 12:23 a.m.
oh and Kiln Fiend decks too. they'll just squeal over Galvanoth.

Flensermite is a little under-rated.
Sure, against other infect decks he sucks, but against other decks, if you stack this guy, you'r daling poision counters and gaining lif, A.K.A. what your opponent has to get to zero to kill.
I hav high hopes for him, and I can't wait to make a deck that takes good care of him.
