Sorok Red Rare Winners

Blind Aggression by Battlecry1986

Loved the twist on a classic card. Bolt you for 3, no - 6!.

Dwarven Smith by DeckBuilder345

Crafty Dwarf for the win. We reduced his P/T to 2/2 and added the Artificer Subtype

Staff of Goblin Devouring by Mpz5

We dropped the first ability, and thus reduced the casting cost (Goblins needed a 4-drop anyway). Loved the thought of a bunch of goblins fighting over this this - Mine! No! Mine! Gimme! Boom!

Inspiration and creative parameters of Sorok

Sorok is a land of vast mountains, lush valleys, rushing rivers and large lakes.

Creatures of Sorok

Dwarves

Dwarves are the major power in Sorok. Their wizards and artisans use the gems and materials gathered by the miners to make powerful equipment. Dwarves are known to be stubborn, loyal, a bit ponderous, and resolute. Dwarves live in the mountains they are born from, having vast underground cities. Dwarven nomads search the tunnels for rareties and treasures, while Dwarven scouts keep an eye the other races.

Goblins

Not your average goblins by any means, the Goblins of Sorok are actually somewhat intelligent and restrained, if a bit out there. They have wizards and artisans that use pilfered materials to make equipment that is well, a bit risky. Their settlements are normally in the valleys, with tall (if shaky) homes. Goblin advisers are selected from the most intelligent of the tribes and mostly try and rein in the more outlandish ideas of the others.

Merfolk

The Merfolk of Sorok inhabit the deep clear lakes of Sorok using the rivers as fast transportation (at least downhill). While not as numerous as the Dwarves or Goblins, the Merfolk are well versed in the control magics and hold their own in the rare conflicts.

Noggles

Noggles are the red headed stepchild of Sorok. Living near the Goblins, they tend to be the pranksters, rabble-rousers, and thieves of the societies.

Birds

Birds are abundant in Sorok, both large and small. Everything from eggs to rocs in the high reaches.

Drakes

Drakes make their homes in the mountains and caves. Some drakes have been known to be raised from the egg by adventurous goblin riders.

Griffins

Griffins are one the major predators in Sorok, and have mostly driven the drakes off the high reaches. While not sentient, the Griffins are highly intelligent and serious in manner.

Themes/Keywords/Mechanics.

The major themes and keywords of Sorok are : Bounce, Colored Non-Creature Artifacts and Equipment, Counter-spelling, Double Strike, Flying, Haste, Legends, Resolve, and Vigilance.
Clamp has been renamed Resolve (Spells, counters, or abilities cannot change this creature’s power and toughness from their printed values)

The Sorok Blue & White Rare Challenge

The next challenge will be to create three of the rares for the Sorok shard. Obviously, there are some guidelines.

1) We are creating three cards again this round: 1. a white rare, 2. A blue rare, and 3. a blue/white multicolored rare.

2) Each person may submit a maximum of three entries total. You may submit any combination of creature, sorcery, enchantment, or instant for your three entries. Remember that colored Artifacts/Equiptment are allowed (just no colored artifact CREATURES), so go nuts.You may also submit any combination of the two colors for this challenge (could be 3 blue cards, 3 white cards, could be all multicolored WU, or could be a mix).

3) The cards will be judged based on four categories: Effectiveness, Set Cohesion, Balance, and Creativity.

Here are a couple of helpful things:

1) Remember that the only keywords that can appear on Sorok cards are the “evergreen" keywords (deathtouch, defender, double strike, enchant, equip, first strike, flash, flying, haste, indestructible, intimidate, landwalk, lifelink, protection, reach, regenerate, shroud, trample, and vigilance). In addition to these “evergreen” keywords, the keyword that is exclusive to Sorok, Resolve (Spells, counters, or abilities cannot change this creature’s power and toughness from their printed values), may be used.

2) We love to see people create their own physical pictures of the cards that they created. Often, they are great looking and really cool, and I encourage you to share them with us. But for our convenience, if you can also type the information directly into the comment, it makes our lives easier. You won't be marked down for not doing this, but copying and pasting text saves a lot of time compared to typing it all up from scratch.

3) Just a reminder, the winning cards may be changed. Be it mana cost or other small things to make the set balanced, your original creation may not be EXACTLY what it was originally, but I promise that we will try our hardest to keep the card as close to its origins as possible.

HAVE FUN CREATING!

The deadline for the Challenge is Friday, January 28th, 2010 at 11:59 p.m. Thanks to everyone!

Recruitment

We have an empty slot to fill on the Design Team!

We know that many of you have expressed interest in joining the Design Team. We are looking for someone that has a good eye for card design and that has spare time that they can devote to this project, which includes being able to meet online Sunday nights at 9:30pm EST for about an hour, and adding notes to a shared document as the challenges progress during the weeks. Whoever joins the team will be unable to submit entries to card creation challenges. However, you'll be able to help judge these challenges and get to see the behind the scenes of the project. If you're interested in joining and helping us out, send me an email at [email protected]. Please include your TappedOut username in the email.

I wanted to give this card kind of an "adventerous" feel, half because of the awesome name, half because with the griffins being top dog in the skies, the drakes would have to learn a trick or two in order to survive. Thats why this card is as so.

first, some love for flying white weenie decks that provides some help, even if you choose to rock a resolve deck.

Sorok Aviary

3W

Artifact

Flying creatures you control get +1/+1.

W: Choose one: Haste, First Strike, Vigilance, or Resolve. Target flying creature you control gains the chosen ability until end of turn. That creature may not be targeted by ~cardname~ again this turn.

Second, I tried to make something that felt like a Fog Elemental for a W/U Legendary creature who would love to be the centerpiece of a resolve / control deck. Not sure whether he should lose reach, or whether his power / toughness should change.

Susurrus, The Breath of Sorok

2WU

Legendary Creature - Elemental

Reach, Resolve, Shroud

All creatures get -2/-0.

2/5

and third, a fun, but possibly OP piece of buffing for equipment-centric decks. It's supposed to share all equipment-granted bonuses (other than triggered abilities, to avoid Argentum Armor shenanigans) across all creatures you control that are using any equipment. Not sure if I got the rules wording correct.

Again meh on the pic.

Story: A Legendary Roc that was said to lay the eggs of creation. Very motherly and will protect her children with her death if need be.(Rocs, Vigilance, and Legends are themes right?)

From a players perspective: This set needs a good Sun Titan /Reveillark type card for white and I think this does the trick. While not quite as powerful as either the high toughness and Vigilance gives this a great defensive feel and being able to power out a huge creature when she dies is just a great effect. The longer she sticks, the worse it is for them to kill her because her babies (which will be greater in number as the game goes on) will hatch and be rather ticked off.

January 25, 2011 6:41 p.m.

But then again zero it might as well just say pay 5 this creature gets +4/+4 and that doesn't seem vary blue.

Edit: For- Flask of melted sapphire. Change cmc to just U and change so it only adds UUU.

WU

Creature - Noggle?

Gemstone Collector enters the battlefield with any number of gemstone counters on it of your choseing. Opponents can not cast spells with converted mana cost equal to the number of gemstone counters on this creature.

2/2

(An added idea could be that it also says creatures opponents control get +1/+0 for each gemstone counter on this creature)

I wanted to make a card that worked like meddling mage and chalice of the void. And the idea behind the cards abilitys is if our noggle or any creature is hording gemstones he is going to want to be protective of them, thus the cast cast with cmc equal to how many gems he has. And for the second ability is because he is powerful lil guy for 2 mana I figured he should have a drawback. thus lust for his gems would fuel creatures to want to attack him and take them. The lust gives them power to take them the more gems the bigger the lust for them. Just wish their was room on the card for all the abilitys, maybe someone can help me shorten it up somehow and still keep it the same idea. Oh and his second ability could be fun with donate hehe, put 50 counters on him then donate! Lol

For once I like what I did with the picture.

Story:

Masera, Silverfin is a prodigy of Protection Magic and has surpassed her mentors in the art of making the most of countermagic. Very intelligent and efficient, she is the Merfolk's key defense should they need it.

She is a Legend, a Merfolk Wizard, has the evergreen ability of Protection, and specializes in utilizing the bounce mechanic as well as Counter Magic, which the merfolk are known for, at the same time... I'm thinking she has Sorok flavor all over her.

From a players perspective:

Hello Glen Elendra Archmage and Kabira Evangel 's daughter (I don't know what Elendra saw in Kabira but every one needs some loving I guess.)

A beautiful card for the UW control player because of the counter ability, A just as beautiful card for a UW merfolk deck for her counter ability as well as her alpha strike potential. I have been waiting for a card like this for a while and I'm sure that others have as well.

Good luck everyone.

At the beginning of your opponents upkeep if he or she has 2 or more cards in his or her hand you may search your library for a blue or white instant card, revel it and put it into your hand. Shuffle your library.

Next

Gem Collector. WU

Creature- Goblin

Gem Collector enters the battlefield with X gemstone counters on it.You chose X. Opponents can't cast spells equal to the number of gemstone counters on this creature.

        2/2

Lastly inspired by Mpz5

Gem of Life's Breath 1WWW

Artifact-Gemstone

Whenever an opponents permanent is exiled chose one- Double all life gain until end of turn. Or Return a creature from your graveyard to play.

(Gem is a take off of Mpz5's card Gem of current reversal) I take no credit for it. I just hope Mpz5 likes this white version.

Abrupt Dismissal WU

Instant

Counter target spell. If a spell is countered this way put it on it's owner's library second from the top.

"I don't have time to address such trivial matters."

Vindictive Merfolk 2,U

Creature

Whenever Vindictive Merfolk is the target of a spell or ability. You may return target nonland permanent to it's owners hand.

I think this is the latest i have ever submitted a card in one of these challenges

my last entry

Gem of Bravery 2,W

Artifact- Gemstone*

Creatures you control get +1/+1 and gain resolve.

W, tap: Creatures you control lose resolve and get +1/+1 until end of turn.

"this precious stone has turned the tide of many wars."

*: just remove the subtype if we are not using the gemstone subtype.

i understand the static P/T buff looks strange with creatures getting resolve as well but it is meant to compliment the second ability. which flavorwise gives a small burst of courage, bravado or whatever you wish to call it to your creatures temporarily.

As a disclaimer: I apologize in advance for any similarities between my entries and anything already posted; I didn't look at the other entries before I made these, so I don't know if I stepped on any toes. Unintentional, if I did.

Entry #1:

~~~~~
Dwarven Mining Company
1W
Enchantment
T, put a mine counter on target land: Put a gem counter on Dwarven Mine Company.
Remove a gem counter from Dwarven Mine Company: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.
Whenever a land has four or more mine counters on it, destroy it.
2: Remove a mine counter from target land. Any player may activate this ability.
~~~~~

Not much to say. I like the ability to stockpile mana until you need it. And forcing opponents to make tricky decisions (choose between land and tempo) is a good play in my book.

Entry #2:

~~~~~
Merfolk Aether-Guide
1WU
Creature - Merfolk Wizard
Spells opponents cast cost 1 more to cast.
When a nonland permanent enters the battlefield under an opponents control, it enters the battlefield tapped unless they pay 1.
The aether has currents just like the river. Why should we not control it as well?
~~~~~

Midrange U/W control who fits Merfolk flavor. With 4 toughness he's relatively burn-proof. Should this be lowered so he's not so hard to take care of?

Protip: He and Grand Douche Augustdouche the IV luuuuuurve each other.

Entry #3:

~~~~~
Noggle Decoy
1U
Creature - Noggle Rogue
Whenever Noggle Decoy attacks, you may pay R. If you do, creatures your opponent controls get -1/-0 until end of turn. Creatures affected this way must block Noggle Decoy if possible.
Whenever Noggle Decoy blocks, you may pay W. If you do, attacking creatures get -1/-0 until end of turn.
U: Return Noggle Decoy to its owners hand.
1/2
~~~~~

I wanted to make a card that showed off Resolve, and eventually I reasoned the best way to do that is to make a card that made Resolve shine.

I'd like input on the activation costs for him. I wanted a guy who's primarily small and sneaky, so he's a Blue creature. Originally I had Red activation for both of the -1/-0 effects, but the second one just felt more white than red. But it could easily be as red or even blue, depending. What are the Noggles' main colors going to be? U/R like in Shadowmoor?

Vintamite Soul Magnetism

UW2

Enchantment-Gemstone

Each creature you control can block an additional creature for each gemstone you control.

"Vintamite is one of the most useful gemstones in Sorok. The goblins relish it's ability to draw the fishes from the rivers right into their hands. The combat veterans of Sorok have developed other uses..."

Remember that (goblins + drakes) & (dwarves + griffins) theme we talked about? Here's an offering for that....

Drake Battlesteed

UR2

Creature-Drake

Flying, Resolve

U: Target goblin you control gains flying until end of turn.

2/4

"The aid of the drakes was obtained by treachery and by having mutual enemies and shared greed."

Griffin Battlesteed

WR2

Creature-Griffin

Flying, Resolve

W: Target dwarf you control gains flying until end of turn.

3/3

"The services of the griffin were obtained through cooperation and a mutual desire to protect the inhabitants of Sorok."

Arrgh. Just realized Griffin Battlesteed is off-color for this one. I really like the idea of pairing it with Drake Battlesteed. Well, maybe I'll keep the idea in mind and reenter it later.

@vic they seem like uncommons to me. Maybe they can be kept for later?

January 28, 2011 12:18 a.m.

MagnorCriol says... #65

Agree with Jarrod. Especially if they're tweaked down just a smidge (1/4 for the drake, 2/2 or 2/3 for the griffin maybe?) they'd make great uncommons. That's the sort of thing you want to see more of than rare-frequency.

Merfolk Relic Finder

U2

Creature-Merfolk something

tap, U: Search your library for a Gemstone card, and put it on top of your library.

1/3

(I know this is similar to Dwarven Smith, but different enough, I think. To me, dwarves MAKE equipment, and merfolk FIND them, so I see this as a merfolk(and blue) ability. To vary it further, I changed equipment to gemstone. That way there are more options to fetch than dwarven smith, but it doesn't go right to hand, which balances out vs. dwarven smith. Also really stays strong on gemstone theme.)

January 28, 2011 10:07 p.m.

vic says... #75

Edit: Hope it's not too late. I should have given RESOLVE to Merfolk Relic Finder. Can you add that in?

For that matter, Dwarven Smith probably should have had it, too. Didn't think to suggest it at the time. We(the group) need to start remembering that one.
