INTRODUCTION-

Hello Tappedout readers. I have a very quick article to help give a little insight into the massive weapons available in your Mirrodin Besieged Pre-releases. These WMDs are powerful, daunting to play against, and more importantly, game ending. The following cards are what the vets of magic call "bombs". The very best and most powerful cards your opposing planeswalker can throw at you. These are the cards you wanna rip open, and almost as much, not have played against you. Also, I’ll tell you a possible way to deal with these cards as well, and what to look for to maybe counter them. A note to this part: I will not mention blue counter spells. Obviously they would counter everything so I will be ignoring those ways.

Phyrexian Bombs-

##Phyrexian Rebirth
Why it's a bomb: I shouldn't really have to explain why this card will completely smash your face. If 7 creatures are on the field by turn 6, which can turn out to be very reasonable, then when this little bad boy goes off, it's controller gets 7 creatures that are 7/7, while the opposing player can start crying and complain that this card shouldn't be white.

Signs and how to deal with it: A really good sign this nuclear bomb is gonna be dropped is if your opponent has a reluctance to block or attack without absolutely having to. They want as many creatures on the field as possible, so if they're playing with some plains and seem to be acting odd, keep an eye out. Also, if they went Phyrexian and don't have any infect creatures, they may have this as their win con. If Rebirth hits the field, there really isn't a way to get around it. Better hope you have some evasion and are close to a kill already.
##Black Sun's Zenith
Why it's a bomb: Day of Judgment has competition now. Black normally just hurts itself for greater power but now black Planeswalkers have their very own board sweep. It says volumes about a card that can totally reset the game and do something DoJ can't: Kill indestructible creatures. Also more good news! It's re-useable! That's what I call a gift that keeps on giving Wizards.

Signs and how to deal with it: If your opponent choose Phyrexia but maintains a very cautious approach. Phyrexia should be about brutal punishment and agony, but yet you notice they haven't played their mid range to big guns quite yet, and they always seem to leave mana open. Warning bells should ring. To help deal with it, unless you can deliver an absolute crushing blow for the win, in the second and third games hold back a creature or two for after the eventual sweep so you won't be left creatureless.
##Massacre Wurm
Why it's a bomb: This is more of a limited kind of bomb. It all depends on what your opponent is doing. If they're playing that R/W Battlecry deck, Massacre Wurm will be one deadly piece of hardware by wiping the field with Disfigures for everyone and having a Shock tacked on for giggles. The main thing here is that it tackles your opponent's field, not yours, and gives them less incentive to chump block your Wurm.

Signs and how to deal with it: They're playing Phyrexian and aren't using infect. They might not be attacking very much but they sure as hell are blocking as much as they can, making sure your creatures stay on the field and stalling. If this baby drops, it's out of Grasp's and Galvanic Blast's range, so some straight removal is your best option. Better hope you have a Mirran Crusader so Wurmy can't attack without dying.
##Phyrexian Vatmother
Why it's a bomb: This little doozy is black's biggest body with infect in the set and he is a bad, bad dude. He can take a licking and keep on ticking as that 5 toughness is going to cause serious problems for its blockers. You need to block this on a 3 turn clock, possibly less due to earlier plays, most often 2 turn. It also has a downside by giving it's controller a 10 turn clock, but your match should be over by turn 14 if your opponent isn't playing infect, so this shouldn't be an issue going forward. However, if your opponent is playing infect as well, might wanna take this guy out for games 2 and 3.

Signs and how to deal with it: Just watch out for any black infect players, there will be many on pre-release day so be careful. Your best option is to chump block this guy all day long and hope you can last long enough to win. The best and most flavorful way to rid yourself of this menace is to chump block with a 2/1 or 2/2 and burn it's controller's face with a common Burn the Impure. Burn, baby, burn.
##Phyrexian Hydra
Why it's a bomb: It's infect on a 7/7 body. That's insane. it's like getting a 14/7 body on turn 5 for you normal damage folk. That's all I need to say really.

Signs and how to deal with it: Phyrexians playing G/(B or U or W) infect. If this baby drops, chump block the living hell out of it and you should be fine. It is one of the best bombs if given evasion, or if you have no creatures, but this bomb is the easiest to deal with.
##Blightsteel Colossus
Why it's a bomb: It ends the game. Period.

Signs and how to deal with it: If it's yours, you win. If it's not, you lose. Well at this point, as far as limited goes, I would shoot for getting as many Into the Cores as possible. It is one of the few real solutions to this card. In constructed, I would say that bounce, exile, and counter, need to be present. Which means that he is still no threat to U/W control.

Mirran Bombs-

##Hero of Bladehold
Why it's a bomb: A 3/4 body for 4 in white is pretty respectable on its own. Add to that powerful frame a +1/+0 bonus to itself and other attacking creatures and you have a great card. What makes this a bomb is the added benefit of having a couple free 2/1 attacker just for kicks, meaning your opponent can quickly take an unexpected extra 4 damage. Let her attack next turn and you're looking at a 3/4 and 4 2/1s coming at you at the least. Getting two free tokens every turn will make her a tough soldier lord to face.

Signs and how to deal with it: Look for other creatures with battlecry on the field as a sign of her possible impending presence and try to keep a Grasp of Darkness in your hand if you play black until at least turn 4 just to make sure you aren't taken by surprise or overrun quickly. If she gets going, the only thing that can take her out will be a black Zenith, so be careful.
##Concussive Bolt
Why it's a bomb: This is the best straight game ending card in Besieged. Not only can it perhaps deal the final damage you need to win, but it also opens up to your battle cry reinforced forces(If you're playing red, you should be playing battle cry) to walk in untouched for the final, skull crushing blow. Not bad for a sorcery.

Signs and how to deal with it: If you're playing a Mirran opponent and they're playing red you HAVE TO ASSUME they are going to play this. It is a common, and more often then not a deck is gonna have at least 1 of these, most often 2. You can't deal with it, but your best bet is to hit hard and fast (preferably with infect) before they get a chance to deal you a significant amount of damage. Keep their creatures to a minimum turns 4 on.
##Hellkite Igniter
Why it's a bomb: This dragon, if it lands, will not be stopped. It has a activated ability that can be pumped AS LONG AS YOU HAVE MANA. So say if you have 5 artifacts, and you have 6 free mana, you can pump him to a 20/5 the turn after he lands, all but gift wrapping the game to you. This guy is downright lethal.

Signs and how to deal with it: Playing Mirran, has mountains on the field, and building up a collection of artifacts. The main things you can do is try to clear the board of your OP's artifacts and block it to death with infect or chump block it until you can drop your bomb. But if he hits and your OP has artifacts, scoop and move on.
##Thrun, the Last Troll
Why it's a bomb: A virtually impossible to deal with 4/4 body with no drawbacks for 4 mana, this is one of the best green drops ever for mana efficiency. With standard green ramp this guy will see impossibly high amounts of standard decks along with Jace. But in limited, he's a 4/4 stick that your opponent has to deal with all game long.

Signs and how to deal with it: You can't. Make sure you get some damage on it before your opponent can pay the mana to re-gen Thrun and chump block him all game long. Watch out for him in Mirran decks paying green. Keep chumps a plenty to hold this guy back.

Conclusion-

These are the main bombs you will have to worry about at your pre-releases guys. There are others, like Bonehoard, Phyrexian Juggernaut, etc, but these ones are the ones that you specifically have to watch out for. I would include Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas but he isn't Phyrexian or Mirran and I’m too lazy to give him his own spot.

I hope this guide helps you and good luck at your pre-release!

The next article in this series is Crap just got real

With Phyrexian Rebirth you would only get one creature.

jerry is right, also, Mirran Crusader as well as all Battlecry cards do not give themselves the +1/+0 bonus.

Also playing against Thrun, the Last Troll is made easier if you are playing Infect, as the -1/-1 counters can whittle him down to size. Also just getting a single -1/-1 counter on him and proliferating could do it.

Concussive Bolt boy, am I upset about having to play against that card tomorrow...

All Hail The Father of the Machines

I mis-read the phyrexian rebirth, LAME.

I realized that battlecry thing and removed my second reference of it from HoB but guess I forgot to axe the first mention of it.

very nice.

as a poor college student no job (however, come summer, i'll be working for basically $9000 :D), i couldn't make the prerelease event ):

besides, i didn't have a ride, and i heard the spots were all full anyway.

my friends were there though, and they said, out of the 36 people, and the 5 packs they each received, ONE person got TWO Planeswalkers, Venser, the Sojourner & Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas .

That means out of the 180 packs opened for that specific shop's pre-release, ONE person, was lucky enough (the bastard...) to pull the only planewalkers that night.

man, a Venser, the Sojourner AND Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas ? gee, i wonder what colors he's playing.

Hahaha, no-one pulled a Tez during competition in my pre-release.

I won't say anything more because i'm writing an article about how my pre-release went.

I was obsessed and for sure I was dropping knowledge pool, and sure enough... my friend did. He wants to make a myr deck and I'm willing to trade my three rare myr cards, but he won't give his knowledge pool up for it.

here's my decklist: MBS Prerelease First place deck

and @Legendinc: I won a box of the prerelease boosters (24? 26?), and a full art memnite and a promo Nissa Revane , along with the promo Glissa, the Traitor .

January 30, 2011 1:27 p.m.

sporkife says... #20

hmmmm. I went to the prerelease, went 1-3, then dropped (6 rounds and i was getting pulped) because of a shoddy Phyrexian pool with not quite enough infect to go with infect and not quite enough good black to go monoblack / artifact deal. pulled me a Mox Opal though...

however, after the sealed we did a 9-player draft of SOM/PHY/MIR. I went B/R and ended up with a Skinrender first pick, a crop of solid black, red, and artifact dudes, then got passed a (foil!) Titan Forge for a second pick, and on the Mirran pack saw: pack 3 - Concussive Bolt , foil Concussive Bolt , pack 4 - Concussive Bolt , pack 5 - Concussive Bolt . That thing is pretty alright, I hear. I ended up only going 2-2, but in the last match i saw all 3 Concussive Bolt s, and won by dropping them on consecutive turns, and that scraped me out enough to get 4th place and (we rare drafted) a Phyrexian Revoker and a Creeping Corrosion , plus my friend got the foil Titan Forge , so I can trade that from him :P pretty fun overall, mhmm.
