Alright everyone, thank you all for all of your submissions. We hava lot of very cool concepts and cards this time around. So now its is time to vote. Here are your finalists:
Green Cards
Epic Troll by dude1818 | |
Comments Needs a new name. Literally the only comment from any member of the design team. Suggestions We are totally open to name suggestiong if this one wins. Just not Epic Troll. |
|
Gladeparters Council by STG
Comments Some of the design team thought that the wording was off. Some also thought that it was a strange card for the challange but that the flavor was great and so it deserved a shot. Some members also thought that the casting cost might be either too high or green intensive. Suggestions Suggested wording: Each player skips his or her next attack phase. Each player loses 1 life for each non-green creature on their side of the battlefield, and then gains 1 life for each green creature on their side of the battlefield. No specific suggestions were given on casting cost. |
|
Elves of Anarchy by Jarrod_0067
Comments Only one design team member had anything that was suggested for this card. He suggested that the flavor text be removed since the reminder text should be on a card in its first set and the text will get too small. he also wanted the the first ability reworded and maybe a p/t change. Suggestions The suggested p/t was 2/1 just to make it a difficult decision about whether or not to block it. The suggested wording of the first ability was: "Pay 1 life, Tap: Add G, W or B to your mana pool." |
|
Wood Caller by Masterjds
Comments We were concerned about the tokens here. Basically the set as a whole is becoming pretty token heavy and Ulgris (UGB shard) has token generation as one of its themes. So we are apprehensive to have a ton more tokens that are not standardized. Suggestions It was suggested that the token this guy puts into play be replaced by a common card with the same stats that the token would have anyway. In which case, this designer gets the honor of making our first common card. |
White Cards
Morally Uncertain Zombie by dude1818
Comments So there were some problems with this card. One the name. Second the ability is zombie specific and we were not hug fans of that. Three it had no P/T. Other than that we liked it. Suggestions one team member was fine making it target creature, not just zombie. The others liked this design: CARDNAME 3W Creature - Elf Shaman Protection from white W, T: Target Elf creature gains memento until end of turn. Destroy it. 2/3 |
|
Vanda's Scrutiny by zandl
Comments Design team liked the idea here but it seemed like a weak kismit Suggestions One member suggested that the life clause be taken out to make it more powerful. So others thought that this was a better take: Vanda's Scrutiny W Enchantment Whenever a land with the same name as a land you control enters the battlefield under an opponent's control, that land comes into play tapped. |
|
Journey to Revelation by Frostcrow
Comments All of us liked the idea and the synergy with what this shard is about but all had different ideas about whether it was too strong too weak or just right. Suggestions We we literally split on whether to make it stronger, weaker or stay them same. Let us know guys. We also might want to look at cutting down on the words since the print is tiny. Remember that reminder text should be there. |
|
Morglen Willow by Prophylaxis
Comments We generally liked this card and wanted it as is. Suggestions One member suggested that the last ability be: "Whenever Morglen Willow dies, put target card in your graveyard on top of your library." |
White/Green Cards
Forest Guardian by IronHead
Comments Generally liked as is. One member wanted it stronger. Suggestions One member suggested 3/3 for the P/T |
|
Vanda, Perennial Blossom by zandl
Comments We like how this worked and almost everything about it. The creature type was in question. Suggestions It was suggested that this be a treefolk shaman rather than plant. |
|
Suntouched Warrior by Jarrod_0067
Comments We really like the way this played off of memento. Suggestions None made |
|
Auspex of Tharin'l by nightscape
Comments Might need to take out flavor text to make room. We also felt that the instant or sorcery restriction did not really fit. It felt too red/blue that way. Suggestions Some suggested 2 of any card be returned some suggested one of any card be returned. |
|
Sunthorn Ravager by pyrefiend
Comments We all liked this a lot. Very unique. Or just unique since something can't be very unique. Suggestions No suggestions made. |
Voting
Here's what we're looking for:
- Each person should vote for his/her favorite 3 cards. You may vote for one card from each color group (i.e., 1 green, 1 white, and 1 multicolor).
- Each person should critique the card(s) for which they have voted. Agree or disagree with the Head Team's suggestions and include any other ideas you have to improve the card. You may also make comments about other cards aside from the card that you voted for. The Head team will take into considerations all comments posted about all cards.
- Please take a look at previous articles for details about Morglen that wil help guide your decisions.
All voted must be in by Friday, August 5th by midnight EST.
1 Elves of anarchy:I like the card a lot. I'm a fan of mana sources that also become late game resources. That being said, i think this card might be a little too powerful at 1 mana. I'm suggesting its cost should be 1(G) and be a 2/1.
2 Suntouched Warrior:Theres not much to say here. I like a really efficient dude that really embodies the Memento theme. I wouldn't change a thing. ;)
3 Journey to Revelation (my submission):Due to the fact that this is my own submission, I'll try to put some good criticism in, followed by my own revision for the (most honorable) judges to consider. I tried to design a card that represented creepy reanimation theme of Morglen and complimented the Memento mechanic. I think the wording is a little awkward and the cost might restrict the interactions with all of the shard's other memento creatures. One thing I really didn't like about it, on reflection, was the fact that it felt unrewarding to put it on a creature that already had memento. With those thoughts in mind I make the following suggestion for a revised addition:
Journey to Revelation:Cost: 1(W)
Enchantment-Aura:
Enchant Creature
Enchanted creature gets +2/+1 and gains first strike. When enchanted creature dies, if it had memento, return Journey to Revelation to play attached to target token creature. If enchanted creature is a token it gets +1/+2 and gains lifelink
*note that it could also be downgraded to +1/+1 on either/both ends
I think these changes would make it friendlier to the other colors of the shard and reward people for playing memento/token creatures. As for the potential power level of the card, I'm equally confused.

@mozerdozer the enchantment was designed to give +3/+3 and all the buffs to tokens. For a final version, those numbers could be tweaked.

I like Epic Troll the most out of all the Green cards. Perhaps a name like "Injurious Troll" would be more fitting of such a suicidal creature.
From White, I really like Morglen Willow. However, a mono-White Treefolk is a bit odd to me. Perhaps have it be a centaur instead? The effect this card has seems more of a centaur-y effect, anyways. IMHO, that is. Also, for P/T, if you keep it a Treefolk, it's got to have some staying power for a cost of 5, but enough Power to make it worth using instead of waiting for it to just die. As a Treefolk, I like 2/5. As a Centaur, I'm a fan of 3/4.
My favorite Multicolored card is Vanda, Perennial Blossom. (So I'm tooting my own horn here, but who isn't?) I agree that making it a Treefolk Shaman is more suitable than keeping it a Plant Shaman (because that's just weird, in retrospect). But come on. Defender (the color-neutral counterpart) on anything with Toughness equal to 4 is awesome, let alone with Reach (the Green counterpart) and Lifelink (the White counterpart). Lifelink with a Power of 2 on a creature that can block anything save for unblockable creatures and likely survive is great at slowing down and fending off Aggro, gaining board control, or stalling out a Weenie deck. All of these things really stand for what White and Green like to do.
Perhaps a casting cost of 1GGW is more appropriate. Playing an additional each turn is definitely a mechanic mostly unique to Green and Regeneration is also almost exclusively Green. And it IS a Plant/Treefolk, after all. Plus, have you even Googled "Vanda"? It's a genus consisting of particularly flamboyant plants in the orchid family. Orchids are renowned for their durability and survivability as flowers. Dude, I'm awesome!
So my votes are for Epic Troll, Morglen Willow, and Vanda, Perennial Blossom.

@mozerdozer - correct on all accounts. These are issues that we fix with wording after the winners are selected. VErbage has to be very specific and we usually run the cards against the WOTC standards after voting.

I vote:
Elves of Anarchy - Nice ramp choice for the set me thinks and the memento granting is an added bonus.
Journey to Revelation - Strong card but a little OP I think. Maybe make the effects +1/+0, then +0/+1. I would also make it not come back if it's attached to a token, only a non-token.
Auspex of Tharin'l - I'm loving the synergy for the 3 colored block. Nice idea and very fun to build around.

I really like journey to revelation i think it has beautiful flavor with the set and is at a reasonable power level. If you wanted to push its power level you could add the clause "when journey to revelation is put from the battlefield to the graveyard instead return it to your hand, otherwise people will be killing the targeted creature in response all day long. So in conclusion I vote for Journey to Revelation.

How about 'Repentant Lich' for "Morally Uncertain Zombie'?
I would vote for 'Morglen Willow' I also like the suggestion for putting a card from the graveyard on top of the library, especially if its mandatory.
For green, 'Epic Troll.' Maybe 'Mangrove Troll' for a name.
For multicolor: 'Suntouched Warrior.' The momento concept is cool & I think this card plays off it well.

Gladeparts Council - Worded as suggested, 4GG mana cost? The card seems to be at its right mana cost, but it won't work well with the rest of the shard as is.
Vanda's Scrutiny - minus the pain, and one mana cost sounds fine to me, but maybe have it only affect basic lands so it would not be a turn one win condition.
Suntouched Warrior - Fine as is.

Vote 1: Epic Troll. When I was submitting my entries, I was too tired to think up good names. Maybe name it after the major forest on Morglen?
Vote 2: Morally Uncertain Zombie. Like I said, I was tired. It was supposed to be a 2/2. I thought that the ability would be more fitting on a zombie, but I suppose it could be elf-ish.
Vote 3: Forest Guardian. Choosing this one was hard, and not just because I didn't have an entry! :) All of the entries either focus on token-ness or are just Chinese menus. The others are worse, so I'm picking this one.
I also want to point out that you don't necessarily have to have the reminder text for the rare cards.

1) Sunthorn Ravager (love card as is)
2) Vanda's Scrutiny (drop the pay life thing)
3) Elves of Anarchy (i don't think it needs the pay 1 life if its a rare.)
August 1, 2011 3:14 p.m.
Vote 1: Gladeparters Council. Very nice and flavorful. It manages to use a mechanic that is distinctly black/white, the simultaneous loss and gain of life, in a way that still feels green. My favorite of the green entries by far.
Vote 2: Vanda's Scrutiny. Again, I like to see that the other two colors of the shard have their influence, even though the card itself isn't multicolored. I think the payment of life should stay, but it is a little weak as is... maybe make the payment a little higher?
Vote 3: Sunthorn Ravager: Yep, this is mine. I like rares that have weird, yet simple abilities, and this is my best effort at making one. I'm beginning to think it should be a 2/2. Also, I changed the name before posting but forgot to change it in the rules text, so right now the card calls it "sunthorn ravager" and "soul of dawn".

If Vanda's Scrutiny makes the cut but Vanda, Perennial Blossom doesn't, you can change the name to "Elvish Scrutiny".

- Gladeparter's Council. The suggested wording sounds good. As for the green intensive aspect, perhaps a change to 3GG would be a bit better?
- Morglen Willow. I like it. Sounds good and simple as it is.
- Sunthorn Ravager. Unique, as stated, and could make some interesting play against Black decks.

Well guys, I'm stumped as far as my votes are concerned. Green is full of amazing cards, while the white and multicolor brackets don't really appeal to me that much. Oh well, gotta at least try:
Green: Elves of Anarchy. This was tough because I liked Epic Troll (if it is chosen suggested name would be Troll of Shadows), and Wood Caller. But Elves of Anarchy has all the tools it needs to become a staple in any deck running elves (or based on memento for that matter). I like it as it is P/T wise, if anything a change to 2/1 would be the best.
White: Journey to Revelation. This is the only card that stuck out to me in the white list. Now I may be one of few saying this but if this does get chosen, you will have to hold back on cards with Memento. Most people agree that Angelic Destiny is good, and to be honest this card in the right circumstances could be as good, for cheaper, and at a lower rarity. This is a wicked card if used right (and with things as they are right now this combos pretty well with elves of anarchy and this could kill viable aggro strategies. Turn one elves, turn two journey, sac elves targeting opponents creature, get token and reattach for a 4/4 vigilance first strike on turn two or three. aka Stoneforge Mystic +Batterskull ) Do not underestimate it.
Green White: Sunthorn Ravager, for uniqueness sake.

elves of anarchy change to 0/1 journey to revelation abilities feel kinda random but I like the concept also changing the p/t boost to +2/+2 seems cleanforest guardian a 2/3 to play better with vigilance

A few issues I noticed - The enchantment "Journey to Relevation" gives both of the buffs to the token creature, fairly certain the +2/+1 and first strike and memento is supposed to be only if it is a non-token creature. Secondly, permanent cards, such as enchantments, creatures, and artifacts read "Has" not "Gains" as they are continuous effects, an example is Suntouched Warrior, which should read "If this creature is a token, it HAS intimidate". I also noted some redundant wording, such as the Morglen Willow as well as the Auspex of Thaurin'l reading "creature token" instead of just "token" as there is no way to convert a creature into any other type of permanent, i.e. enchantment, to my knowledge. Also hexshroud should be hexproof. Other than that the cards seem fairly well balanced though the Forest Guardian would be OP IMO if it was 3/3.
