Starting point for inspiration and creative parameters of Morglen
Morglen is filled with wide reaching Savannah and glades, but as one ventures deeper and deeper into the forests and farther from the heart of morglen, the ground becomes slightly bogged and more desolate.
Storyline/history
In this shard there are two Major tribes, the Gladeparters and the Tharin'l, both of elves. The Gladeparters are centered around true democracy and hold their tribal council with the Tharin'l though they get along less and less as the year go on. Both tribes believe in order in nature and are willing to die for it. Nature is nearly worshiped by these elves in a religious fashion. The Gladeparters led by Doreer, the elder, follow the normal worship of nature and realize the plans of the youth around them but decide as a group to not devise a plan against them. All that they concentrate on is that nature and right will prevail and that they will gladly die protecting both.
Both societies have the technology level of an iron age society. They have Iron weapons and armor, yet their buildings are more hut like in nature, some on the ground and some in the trees. Neither architecture nor creating artifacts is a focus of this nation.
Themes
The major themes and keywords of Morglen were previously determined to be these from older discussion: Recursion/resurrection, Regeneration, life loss
Creature Types
According to the voting (over 3 votes) the top creature types of Chavest are : Elf, Beast, Plant, Treefolk, Troll, Zombie, Centaur, Wolves
Subtypes include: Rogue, Shaman, Druid, Necromancer.
Themes/Mechanics
New Mechanic
Please read below.
Others
The mechanics of course include the evergreen keywords (deathtouch, defender, double strike, enchant, equip, first strike, flash, flying, haste, indestructible, intimidate, landwalk, lifelink, protection, reach, regenerate, shroud, trample, and vigilance)
The general themes according to the voting are Regeneration, Hexproof, Reach, landwalk, Recursion/resurrection.
Morglen Plainswalker Challenge - Colors : Black/White/Green
For Morglen's first card creation challenge, you will be creating this shards Planeswalker and Voting for the new Mechanic. These are the guidelines you must follow:
1) For the card creation : card must be a Planeswalker.
2) For the card creation : The card must use only Morglen's colors, Black, White & Green. You don't have to use all of the colors, but those are the only ones available.
3) For the card creation : Each person may submit a maximum of three (3) entries total.
4) For the card creation : We will be judging based on the following criteria: a) Effectiveness (Does the card actually work mechanics-wise?) b) Set Cohesion (Does the card fit the flavor for Morglen? c) Balance (Is the card too overpowered or underpowered both in general and for its rarity?) d) Creativity (Does the card seem fun or is it a clever design?)
5) We also need your votes on the top Mechanics provided by the brainstorm:
- Memento (When this creature dies, if it wasn't a token, put a token that is a copy of this creature onto the battlefield.)
- Graveyard + meld (When this card enters the battlefield return a permenant card from your graveyard to play with a cmc less then this card.)
- Ghost in the Shell (when this creature dies, search your library for a card with the same name and put it onto the battlefield).
The deadline for entries is Tuesday, June 21st, 2011 at 11:59 p.m.
Entry Two:
Valia, The Protector 2GW
+2: Until end of turn, creatures you control gain Hexproof and have G: Regenerate.
+2: Gain 1 life for each creature you control.
-8: Prevent the next 20 damage that would be dealt to creatures you control.
Starting Loyalty: 5.
Since large-scale damage prevention hasn't really been done before, I'm unsure what's balanced and what isn't, but it seemed like a cool thing to try. It might not be powerful enough with destroy creature cards, but could be too powerful against other creatures. I would consider changing how much damage is prevented and maybe giving an emblem that give select creatures indestructibility, Hexproof, or Regeneration.

My entry no. 1
Sarel Aedora (CMC: 2GW)
+2: Put two 1/1 green Saproling creature tokens onto the battlefield
-1: Target creature you control gains hexproof as long as Sarel is on the battlefield
-6: You get an emblem with "Creatures you control have memento"
Starting Loyalty: 3
June 12, 2011 12:59 p.m.
My vote for mechanics will come with my last entry, but I was wondering if I could include one of the new mechanics in an entry. Normally at this point, the shard's ability has been decided, and it makes perfect sense that, in the interest of time, you've combined the planeswalker challenge with ability voting, but if I wait to see which way votes seem to be heading and utilize the mechanic that ends up being most popular, will that entry be considered?
Thanks for your time in advance.

In regards to the new keyword, and planeswalkers. Historically we do not like to pick planeswalkers that use non-evergreen keywords. so you are better off if you like a specific keyword, to give synergy with that key word and your planeswalker.

I like the idea of having a Plainswalker that tutors on the Green/Black side of things. Both are colors that have proven history to that end and this card is a fair and balanced way to tutor you opponents to death.

i think that similarly to leaving it as render, power could easily be balanced by costs rarity and frequency of use in the set. As with any mechanic, is every common has it and it cost nothing real extra, it can be OP.
June 13, 2011 1:35 p.m.
@ SocialistElite
The mechanics are quite powerful, yes, but they only really become broken with their implementation. You could use these mechanics to make a number of underwhelming cards, it just depends on how they're used.

Orpheus, the Decrepit
2WBG
+1: Pay X life and untap up to X lands
0: Return target permanent from your graveyard to the battlefield. You lose X life, where X is that card's converted mana cost.
-3: Destroy all artifacts and enchantments, you gain life equal to the number of permanents destroyed this way and each opponent loses life equal to the number of permanents destroyed this way
Loyalty: 3
Designed to fit Morglen's mechanics. If deemed too OP, the middle ability can return card to hand and/or the first ability can cost 2 life per land.

I vote for Momento and suggest it be called Reincarnate.
Graveyard + Meld would be way way way way way too OP and uncheckable. Cast anything with the mechanic for 5? Oh, ok, Jace back to the field. Even returning to hand would be OP unless you doubled the cost of everything with the mechanic.
Ghost in the Shell could work... but to make any decent creature/permanent with this ability would have to increase its cost by a ridiculous amount. Squadron Hawk works b/c it's a 1/1 flyer for 2 and you have to cast the others from hand. If you start making 2/2 tramplers for 2 that replaces itself... it'll be a problem and you'd never run less than 4 of them. Maybe if they go to your hand.

Not quite sure on the casting cost, and the loyalty cost for his ultimate. I'm thinking either changing the casting cost to 3BG. Also increasing the loyalty cost for the ultimate to 9 may help make this card more balanced considering the ease of proliferation in standard.

I'll go with two entries, as designing planeswalkers is just too hard.
I dislike all three mechanics. Ghost in the shell is too similar to Memento, while Memento is way too similar to persist. I'll vote for Graveyard Meld, but return to hand instead of battlefield.

looking at the shard, i really wanted to go into a more golgari-esque plainswalker, something that would take savra-esque decks to a newer level. Also, i wanted to see a return of plainswalkers like Sarkhan the Mad and Gideon Jura , that dont really have an ultimate(gideon) and didnt give himself counters (sarkhan) but with that sort of combo, this guy had to be pretty beefy on entrance. it is true that he only cna live through a -3 and a -6,the more devastating part would come from his 0 ability, which is almost a Despise on a stick. the combo of that with a sac engine can easily turn tides. -6 is more for the flavor of being a troll, yet has such great uses within the colors

Sybela, Priestess of the Plains 2WW
+1 Put a 2/2 white Centaur creature token with reach or a 1/1 white Elf creature token with nonbasic landwalk on the field.
-3 All creatures you control get protection from a color of your choice untill end of turn.
-6 Put a 3/3 white Centaur creature token with haste on the field for each creature in all graveyards.
Starting Loyalty: 3
I vote for Graveyard + Meld. However, I think it should be strictly 1 less than the casting cost, restricted to permanents of the same type, and both get exiled when they leave the battlefield; so no bouncing back to hand.
June 13, 2011 7:01 p.m.
It seems that two of the potential mechanics, both graveyard + meld and Ghost in the Shell could use better names.
Can we just call the first one 'gravemeld'? Seems both obvious, flavorful, and much easier than 'graveyard + meld'.
As for the second, I'm not sure -- it reminds me of those little russian dolls with one copy nested inside another. but 'Embedded' seems pretty weak. Maybe 'Kincaller'? 'Bloodbound'?
Anyhow. My vote is for Memento.
As for planeswalkers, my first entry goes a little like:
Slyrm, Mold Scion 1BG

I would vote, as others have done, to have the name of memento changed to "reincarnate" or something along those lines. I'd also like to see the text changed to "when this card is put into the graveyard from the battlefield, exile it instead and put a token into play that's a copy of this card" I don't think that's exactly how it would be phrased, but that's the basic idea. I like the mechanic, but if retrieval and reanimation are main themes of the block, it'd be very easy to abuse the ability as it is. Infinite tokens of anything is a problem.
That being said, I vote for memento.

@deadmanwalking - Infinite combos are a part of every set. They make cards specifically to entertain the Johnnies of Magic. Without combos, 1/3 of all magic players would disappear. They aren't so much of a problem these days. Look at the game at the moment. There are 4 viable standard combos going right now because of the release of NP.
ALSO PEOPLE LISTEN UP!
The definition of the word "reincarnate", basically from the Hindu religion, "...is when the soul or spirit, after the death of the body, comes back to life in a new form, such as another animal". This is why I don't like it as the creature is coming back... as itself again.... :\
Also, Reincarnation is an actual card.

Yea, by the Hindu definition we would be using it wrong. But, Reincarnation and its applications to Hinduism are different than reincarnate. Reincarnate means to incarnate again. Incarnate means to "embody in flesh."
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/reincarnate
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/reincarnate
So I would agree that it could be confusing, but also since Hinduism doesn't exist in MTG I think reincarnate is certainly appropriate.
That being said, I'm not gonna put up much more of a fight. So if the creative team is really opposed to it then OK.

Ok, first of all, infinite combos are most certainly not an intended part of every set. They are present in most sets, yes, but that's bound to happen. Just because something is likely going to be used in a combo it doesn't mean that it should be pre-programed for abuse. More importantly, my point wasn't that infinite combo's are bad, because I don't think that, my point was that as it is the ability is far to easy to abuse as it is. Off the top of my head I can think of a decent combo with the mechanic as it is: card:Hell's Caretaker + any creature with memento = A creature that never goes away. That might not be an exceptionally powerful combo, but that's just my point, that was just something I thought of off hand, if I looked, I'm sure that I could find something far more powerful. The ability is too easy to abuse, and with one of the main themes being reanimation it's just too easy to find ways to do so in set.
Secondly, reincarnation is not a concept exclusive to Hindu philosophy, although if I recall correctly, it is one of the first known instances of the concept. But more importantly, since when has it mattered that a term isn't being used in it's real world context in this trading card game? Especially with the fan-made sets on this site? Cleave doesn't mean you destroy something so well that you also inadvertently destroy something else completely separate. Reincarnate just sounds better, and I don't think that it's particularly offensive or anything, that's all I was trying to say.
Now, this is just my opinion, and this response probably stems just as much from pride as it does from a need for clarification, but I still felt it was appropriate to elaborate. I genuinely am trying to be constructive, I'm just a little headstrong. But hey, whatever, it's just a game. Actually, it's not even that, it's just us talking about a game.

For example, cascade is broken, if it was only one color and on a lot of cards, but it was only on 12 cards and they all were different combinations of colors.
Epic was only on 5 cards because it could not be on more. it would be OP.
And I have to say, I don't personally care which keyword wins. It makes no difference to me. Sometimes I have favs and this time I have a slight leaning that I will not share, but memento is not OP. just because card:Hell's Caretaker makes a nice combo here, does not make it OP. If it is so OP that it is a problem for the game then Penumbra Bobcat , Penumbra Kavu , Penumbra Spider , and Penumbra Wurm would be banned. I think it is a totally viable mechanic that simply can't be overused. IMO

squire1 's right; a strong mechanic like Memento simply demands care in how it's used - and likely means the final design/editing team will have to make more tweaks to the community cards with Memento on them for balance - but it doesn't mean it should be avoided.
card:Hell's Caretaker could be used to abuse Persist in a similar fashion (though slightly less profitably, admittedly) and they printed it just fine.
I personally cast a vote for Memento because it sounds like a really interesting idea. Reminds me of Persist. Also, I like the name Memento simply because I think that word sounds far more evocative than 'reincarnate' does.
I think the graveyard + meld idea sounds interesting but having it any permanent seems too strong and open-ended; and Ghost in the Shell is a cool idea too, but I think it needs renaming if we choose it.
Don't have PW ideas yet, I've been in the middle of nowhere, but mental juices are flowing.

@Smuggy - sorry for not answering this before. just read it
Yes we will consider anything that gets the full force of the voters behind it. We prefer not to, as to avoid confusion, but you may suggest a keyword and people may vote for it and if others change their mind to it from previous votes that is fine. i will say that many were submitted last challenge and we narrowed it to the ones we presented in the article as they were the only ones that the design team agreed on

I'd rather not harp on this anymore, but it seems my point was lost in rhetoric earlier. My point was NOT that card:Hell's Caretaker makes a uber powerful combo with memento, it doesn't. The combo I posted above really isn't very good, I said that in the sentence immediately following it. My point is that an ability like memento is very easy to abuse, especially in a set with lots of reanimation.
Now this part is new, but I was operating on this paradigm, so I think it's necessary that I make it clear exactly what my train of thought was. An ability like memento needs to be very heavily controlled if it is used, because it has such potential for abuse. Now this sort of thing is very common in Magic, but it is usually limited to cycles or a very small card pool, for example the ability epic that squire1 mentioned, or the guild specific abilities in Ravinica. Now that's just fine, but here's the part where I suppose my conception of what's going on here differs from other peoples. I was under the impression that the idea was to vote in a mechanic that would be the main focus of the set, like infect in the scars block, or spirit and arcane in kamigawa. As it is, memento needs to be too heavily controlled to make it the main focus of a set, it's too easy to abuse. Now, it could be that the idea is to create a mechanic something akin to epic or nijitsu or living weapon, to make the sort of thing that IS heavily controlled, but I was under the impression that the ability voted in would be the main focus of the set, and therefore have a plethora of cards showcasing it. If it is meant to just be a single cycle ability, then I guess I've been approaching this the wrong way, otherwise I still think it's too powerful.
The name thing is just a matter of opinion. I think reincarnate sounds better, if you disagree, then you disagree.
Also, even if the ability isn't changed, which I doubt it will be, I still vote for memento.

Oh, I can't believe I forgot this part: My point wasn't that memento is bad, it's that it need a little tweaking, as in exile the creature card as it goes to the graveyard. I stated that in my original post, but I forgot to reiterate that point.

@deadmanwalking Momento would only be used on this shard and on specific cards, like maybe a 2/1 deathtouch for 3 mana. Very small pool of maybe 6 - 10 cards, one mythic, one rare and the rest common/uncommon
June 17, 2011 1:22 a.m.
@deadmanwalking - I see your point more now. To clarify, the mechanic will be potentially used in all 3 sets of a 3 set block. That said it will be limited to one of five shards represented in these sets. So the possible cardpool that could have the mechanic is 1/5 of 3 sets. hope that helps.
And I am not opposed to the exile change

Memento and Ghost in the Shell respectively sound like less and more abusable versions of Persist (although having the card go to the hand instead of the battlefield would be an improvement). Meld could be pretty interesting, though.
Graveyard + meld is my vote.

Personally, Memento gets my vote. I think its the most balanced, and its already been done before in a way, so we don't need to really change it. Just look at the Penumbra creatures. The only difference is that it doesn't change the color. But, as a throwback kind of thing, maybe we should consider adding that?
