It was interesting seeing how some people talked about flavor/storyline, some people talked about the value of the actual card, and so on. How did it all turn out? Well....

1 - No. 13 Jace Beleren vs. No. 20 Chandra Ablaze

Requisite black humor, horribly insensitive tsunami joke.

WINNER - Jace Beleren

2 - No. 14 Tezzeret the Seeker vs. No. 19 Nissa Revane

In a dramatic surprise, Nissa summons up Nissa's Chosen after Nissa's Chosen, and Tezzeret responds by pulling out artifact after artifact. However, it turns out that someone, while Tezzeret wasn't looking, switched out all his good artifacts for nothing but Frogmites. The IRONY.

WINNER - Nissa Revane

3 - No. 15 Ajani Goldmane vs. No. 18 Sarkhan Vol

After a pitched battle, in which Ajani is careful not to summon his giant avatar o' death, Ajani finally overpowers Sarkhan using a bunch of vigilant tokens with +1/+1 counters on them. In classic 80s movie fashion, Sarkhan turns away from his former bro and goes "You do what you have to do" before Ajani sends in the final wave that forces Sarkhan to planeswalk away to safety.

WINNER - Ajani Goldmane

4 Chandra Nalaar vs. Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas

Chandra hates all of you guys. She does not comprehend how you all think that these stupid twisted bits of metal can overcome the power of FIRE. She will definitely Death Spark all of you guys. And you will feel SLIGHTLY HOT.

WINNER - Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas

Round of 16

And now, introducing our 16 competitors, in reverse order of seeding.

16 - Nissa Revane

Hailing from: Zendikar

Weighing in at: 2GG

Walks into the ring to: "Houses of the Holy" by Led Zeppelin

Having somehow defeated original Tezz, Nissa seeks to press on and use her Elvenly ways to take down some of the big-boy Planeswalkers. Will she succeed? Well, no, probably not. I mean, even if you guys are pretty unanimous, I'm probably just going to overrule you. Unless someone gives me a REALLY compelling argument for some power she has that we don't know about. Like, what's in that staff of hers? Maybe it contains chloroform or something?

15 - Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas

Hailing from: Esper, Alara

Weighing in at: 2UB

Walks into the ring to: "Welcome to the Machine" by Pink Floyd

Having easily dispatched Chandra Nalaar to make it to the round of 16, Tezzeret 2 now remains the only Tezzeret in the tournament, and will hold the Tezzeret banner aloft so that, despite the fact that we are now down a Tezzeret, we might yet still Tezzeret while we Tezzeret.

14 - Ajani Goldmane

Hailing from: Naya, Alara

Weighing in at : 2WW

Walks into the ring to: "Soul Man" by Sam & Dave

Frankly, I think Ajani's kind of overconfident. Sarkhan Vol is a good Planeswalker and all, but I mean, he's up against some slightly more serious competition this time. Yeah, yeah, gain 2 life, that's cute, and I'm sure we'd all like to pat Ajani on the head and give him a lollipop and put that 2 life he made us on the family fridge. But will he make it out here, in the REAL WORLD? We'll soon find out.

13 - Jace Beleren

Hailing from: Ravnica

Weighing in at: 1UU

Walks into the ring to: "Where Bluebirds Fly" by Radiohead

Man, I am totally not biased in favor of blue Planeswalkers. I mean, I could have bumped Jace up into the top 12 so he wouldn't even have to fight his way into the round of 16. For that matter, I could just fix the tournament so that every single blue planeswalker wins every single match. Maybe I'm doing that RIGHT NOW. Except, Tezzeret lost. Or maybe I just did that to make you THINK I'm being fair. You'll never know. I am five steps ahead of you guys right now. I am like a Magic: the Gathering Charlie Sheen.

12 - Koth of the Hammerfoil

Hailing from: Mirrodin

Weighing in at: 2RR

Walks into the ring to: "Mountain Man" by Crash Kings

What you didn't count on with Koth is the whole hammer thing. It's like fighting Zeus- you need to go into the fight with an anti-lightning strategy if you're going to pull it off. With Koth, you have to deal with the HAMMER. And so few people do.

11 - Sarkhan the Mad

Hailing from: Jund, Alara

Weighing in at: 3BR

Walks into the ring to: "Madhouse" by Anthrax

Sarkhan is SO CRAZY. You look at him, and he's walking, and you think he's going to just keep walking wherever he's going, but instead he totally produces a skateboard out of hammerspace and does a lipslide down a dead dragon's spinal column, and then he lands and manuals out, only while you're watching him, the skateboard turns into a dolphin, and he's now riding the dolphin. Basically, Sarkhan is like the Old Spice guy, only he kills you.

10 - Elspeth Tirel

Hailing from: Bant, Alara

Weighing in at: 3WW

Walks into the ring to: "Sisters Are Doing It for Themselves" by the Eurythmics

New Elspeth is the first of the top 10. She would like to ask you how you are going to cope when she wipes every other Planeswalker off the board for -5. Unless one of those Planeswalkers is a land, or a token. Not that she knows of any way for a Planeswalker to also be a land or a token, but you know Wizards, in like 5 years there'll be some set where they're like "ARE YOU EXCITED FOR THE NEW LAND-PLANSWALKER, BOB THE LIVING ISLAND?" Actually, that sounds pretty sweet.

9 - Ajani Vengeantfoil

Hailing from: Naya, Alara

Weighing in at: 2WR

Walks into the ring to: "Screaming for Vengeance" by Judas Priest

That is one messed up spear/axe/whatever that Ajani has. Plus, he has the two best colors in Magic- white and red. They are the best colors, because white can HEAL three damage with Healing Salve, and red can DO three damage with Lightning Bolt. Or with Death Spark three times, either way. The main point is, in Magic, life total is what matters. And white and red together can increase your own life total, or DECREASE that of your opponent. Simple.

8 - Liliana Vess

Hailing from: ???

Weighing in at: 3BB

Walks into the ring to: "Living Dead Girl" by White Zombie

I think Lily has become a little too attached to that veil, you guys. I mean, she wears it EVERYWHERE. I know she keeps saying that it's slimming, and yeah, maybe it is, but for all the wrong reasons. Like, it's ACTUALLY reducing her weight. And animating zombies. And then those zombies reduce OUR weight. By eating us. So yeah, I think it's too slimming.

7 - Sorin Markov

Hailing from: ???

Weighing in at: 3BBB

Walks into the ring to: "At Dawn They Sleep" by Slayer

Sorin does not want you guys to associate him with Twilight any longer, ok? Look, he is a SERIOUS vampire. He was a vampire WAY before all this stupid pop culture vampire stuff. He was a vampire before Dracula was a vampire. He is old school. He was a hipster indie rock vampire before it was cool.

6 - Venser, the Sojournerfoil

Hailing from: Urborg, Dominaria

Weighing in at: 2WU

Walks into the ring to: "Magic Carpet Ride" by Steppenwolf

I am still so disappointed in Venser. Next to a planeswalker that counters spells, the thing I most wanted was a planeswalker that bounces things as a dedicated mechanic. And yeah, I know Jace TMS can unsummon, but it's for -1. And that just sucks. AND VENSER SHOULD BOUNCE THINGS. Venser, Shaper Savant bounced things. But he doesn't. It's tragic.

5 - Garruk Wildspeaker

Hailing from: ???

Weighing in at: 2GG

Walks into the ring to: "Hunter" by 30 Seconds to Mars

True facts. SupremeAlliesCommander says:

"Green's to do list:

ramprampramp between 8 and 9 am. Frag some artifacts and enchantments before lunch. Summon a silly-sized horde of happymeal toys."

Your argument is valid. Garruk even comes into work at 6:30 to start the paperwork for the ramp. There's a lot of red tape. You need a 834-c form just to fetch a forest, let alone UNTAP one.

4 - Elspeth, Knight-Errant

Hailing from: Bant, Alara

Weighing in at: 2WW

Walks into the ring to: "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin

Yeah. You all forgot about Elspeth, didn't you? Well she's still there. Kicking ass, taking names, and making things indestructible as hell. Seriously, everything's going to be SO indestructible. You'll try to destroy it, but no. You'll run right into that emblem. It is the most legit of all emblems. And maybe you'll try to destroy the emblem, but IT TOO IS INDESTRUCTIBLE. Deal with it.

3 - Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker

Hailing from: ???

Weighing in at: 4UBBR

Walks into the ring to: "Master of Puppets" by Metallica

I am five steps ahead of you guys, but Bolas is twenty-three steps ahead of ME. Seriously. He fought a battle with Tezzeret, Jace, and Sharuum and won, except it turned out that Tezzeret actually won, except THEN it turned out that he had beaten a FAKE Bolas and the REAL Bolas just set the whole thing up to discover what was up with Tezzeret. Are you confused? BOLAS IS NOT CONFUSED. Bolas is watching you RIGHT NOW, and he KNOWS what you're going to do next. If Bolas and Batman ever teamed up, the universe would implode.

2 - Gideon Jura

Hailing from: ???

Weighing in at: 3WW

Walks into the ring to: "Travellin' Soldier" by the Dixie Chicks

In order to kill things, Gideon first requires that the thing be sideways. This is because Gideon has a soldier's mind when it comes to tactics, and he won't attack anything except from the flank. That is why he can only kill things that are sideways- the card is expecting the attack to come from the TOP of the card, but no, Gideon swoops in from the side, and BAM. Right in the expansion symbol.

1 - Jace, the Mind Sculptor

Hailing from: Ravnica

Weighing in at: 2UU

Walks into the ring to: "Where is my Mind" by the Pixies

Did you know that you can proxy a Jace and still have it be legal in a tournament? Here are the handy steps.

1- Get a card sleeve.

2- Place a piece of paper that looks like this into it:

3- Voila! You now have a fully tournament-legal Jace, the Mind Sculptor. It's good to proxy cards this way because it is cheaper.

Round of 16 Matchups

No. 1 Jace, the Mind Sculptor vs. No. 16 Nissa Revane

Nissa is easily the favorite here. I mean, Jace puts Nissa's Chosen on the bottom of the deck, NISSA GETS IT RIGHT BACK.

No. 2 Gideon Jura vs. No. 15 Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas

Tough matchup here. It'll all come down to whether Gideon gets that weird sword-whip thing he uses around Tezz's crazy Etherium arm, I think. And also to whether Tezzeret is expecting Gideon to drop a Near-Death Experience WHEN HE LEAST EXPECTS IT. Which, I guess, he wouldn't.

No. 3 Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker vs. No. 14 Ajani Goldmane

Do NOT even tell me that Ajani is going to "summon Bolas' soul" or whatever. That is crap. Utter crap. I'll tell you what Ajani summons. He sacrifices himself to summon three loyalty counters for Bolas. Good job, Ajani.

No. 4 Elspeth, Knight-Errant vs. No. 13 Jace Beleren

Jace is totally powerless in this matchup because those 20 cards he mills come from the library, and ELSPETH MAKES EVERYTHING INDESTRUCTIBLE INCLUDING THE LIBRARY. Yes-huh, she does. YES SHE DOES. SHE DOES, TIMMY, MY FRIEND TOTALLY SAID SHE MAKES EVERYTHING INDESTRUCTIBLE.

No. 5 Garruk Wildspeaker vs. No. 12 Koth of the Hammerfoil

Good old-fashioned smackdown right here, boys and girls. None of this stupid blue crap. Just a total heavyweight brawl. In fact, it's even happening inside an octagon and available on pay-per-view, which I recommend, since being there in person will probably get you burnt, crushed by mountains, and eaten by wurms.

No. 6 Venser, the Sojournerfoil vs. No. 11 Sarkhan the Mad

They say there is a fine line between madness and genius, but in this case it is a thick line, made of BLOOD, separating two deadly foes. Personally I've got to favor Venser because he wears a helmet, and I think that's going to save him. Sarkhan is going to try to bonk him on the head, but he'll be ok because of that helmet. Safety first!

No. 7 Sorin Markov vs. No. 10 Elspeth Tirel

I think Michael Jackson did a song about this matchup once. And really, it DOESN'T matter if you're black or white. It only matters if you're blue. OBVIOUSLY.

No. 8 Liliana Vess vs. No. 9 Ajani Vengeantfoil

Ajani's going to work really hard in this matchup to avoid that awkward situation where Liliana has all her lands blown up, but then has every creature from every graveyard. I mean that really is just super awkward. I mean you can maybe Lightning Helix one next turn, but jeez. JEEZ.

Tell me below who you think wins, for any reason you think applies? Except for Ajani summoning Bolas' soul. That's just so, so lame.

This article is a follow-up to Planeswalker Tournament of Champions! The next article in this series is Planeswalker TOC - Quarterfinals

Man, I don't like jace, but i hate elves even more. 1. Jace 2. Gideon 3. Ajani 4. Elspeth 5. Garruk 6. Sarkhan 7. Elspeth 8. Ajani. Man, it seems like most these are rigged.

Part 1 of a multi part answer due to character limits.

No. 1 jace, the mind sculptor vs. No. 16 Nissa Revane As discussed previously nissa has terribad abilities that almost no one could ever or would ever want to use ... i mean yay ... life gain... or yay.. summon a piddly super weak not interesting elf creature... bleh....JTMS on the other hand beats face draws cards and wins tournaments by himself... no contest... and pretty sure more blue loving planeswalker bias Jace the mind sculptor wins this one.

No. 2 Gideon Jura vs. No. 15 Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas

Gideon yeah he makes people attack and some times swings for 6... but so what... tezz has awesome abilities. Gets artifacts moving to the field by putting them in your hand and then even if they are piddly 0 costed ornathopters... turns them into 5/5 's so that he can beat face with them. how can you not like this card... plus it has the advantage of being a blue card... (nudge nudge... obviously he is superior right mr. i love all things blue?) I mean heck he took the old tezz ultimate and made it a simple -1 ability. Plus who doesn't like to play with artifacts? Tezz ftw!

No. 3 Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker vs. No. 14 Ajani Goldmane

I have no idea how Ajani made it past sarkan so there is no friggin way he makes it past the number 3 seed on the list. GoGO Nichol Bolas who is himself a dragon. See previous post about why dragons always win and are bad ass.

No. 4 Elspeth, Knight-Errant vs. No. 13 Jace Beleren

yeah Elspeth makes soldiers, pumps soliders, and then if you aren't already dead makes all her stuff indestructible so you can't kill it ever... baby jace doesn't stand a chance. He will have to bow out of the tourney and hope his big brother can put on a better performance ! (Zomg! whats this a legit blue loss... hmmm... i still think the tourney is rigged but we shall see)

No. 5 Garruk Wildspeaker vs. No. 12 Koth of the Hammer

I think you are hating on the red cards a bit why do they get all the hard matchups? Ok Koth clearly takes this one. I mean yeah garruk is good and has mana ramp and creature creation and even an Overrun ability but Koth fits in to RDW like a glove, and not only does he force the VERY LAND to attack you, but he burns you and yours to the ground with his lands. Koth is just gonna kill garruk, his beasts, and anything else that gets in his way. Plus who you gonna give it to some guy who talks wildly? or some guy who is one w/ hammers? Last i checked steel beats up on gibbering fools edge KOTH.

Part 2 due to character limits

No. 6 Venser, the Sojourner vs. No. 11 Sarkhan the Mad

Oh look we return to the old blue gets the easy matchups again. Venser bounces things and kills stuff every time you play a spell once his ult goes off... yes sarkhan does some neat stuff... but in his crazyness he forgot to have any abilities that give him a + so he doesn't actaully stay around that long. He is thankfully a polite crazy guy in that he exits quickly so as not to annoy you for long. Oh and lets not forget that venser actually helped Koth the legendary red planeswalker so he gets bonus points for that. Edge: Venser.

No. 7 Sorin Markov vs. No. 10 Elspeth Tirel

Sorin... comes out late game and doesn't really matter all that much...Elspeth comes out much sooner and beats face. I mean lets face it, elspeth is just gonna shine a little light on poor ole sorin and beat him to dust. Light beats dark every time. Edge: Elspeth

No. 8 Liliana Vess vs. No. 9 Ajani Vengeant

Lilianna suffers from super lack luster non ult abilities. I mean look at her a 5 drop that makes you discard cards... oooh... whoopidee do. By that time in the game chances are other person is going to have played out their hand any how. Or she can just tutor stuff up for you but then she doesn't actually ever use her ult.. so pretty meh...on the other hand This verion of ajani has been turbo charged by his trip to the mountains. With the strenght of red ajani suddenly becomes a house beater. He taps down pesky permanents, sends out regular Lightning Helix 's and destroys all an opponents lands, oh and he comes out on turn 4 people. How do you not see that the guy sporting the red clearly takes this one.

That Venser vs. Sarkhan matchup is classic.

Sarkhan: I hurt myself to find a creature. Venser: blink. Sarkhan: I hurt myself to make him a dragon! venser: so you have 3 life left and my team is unblockable? how about that.

end.

Also: while Tezzballs shouldn't be ranked 15th, and Gideon is pretty broken, this is actually Tezzy's matchup. Gideon has to choose between taking out tezzy's 5/5s, or forcing them to attack him. Assuming tezz starts with one artifact on the board, it's hard for him to not win this matchup.

In Vorthos land: we know that Gideon is good against mindless eternal evils, but how about two of the cleverest eternal evils ever? Tezzeret and Bolas together can outstrategize Gideon any day of the week. (Except on Gideonsday, which used to be wedged in between Tuesday and Wednesday, before Tezzeret used a time sieve to travel back in time, and erase an entire day of the week just to gain an edge in this fight. point: Tezz.)

Gideon has a swordwhipthing. Sounds like an equipment . . . so Tezz animates it, strangles him with it, replaces his brain with zombie-etherium, and now you've got Gideon, Agent of Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas.

March 12, 2011 3:41 p.m.

Round 1: Jace. Because money talks and Nissa is a punk.

Round 2: Tezz. Gideon is great at dealing with a single fatty. Tezz is packing a horde.

Round 3: Nicol Bolas. It's way too hard to cast Nocol Bolas in a timely manner. However, Ajani is just complete and utter weaksauce for so long, Nicol is likely to hit the table, anyway.

Round 4: Elspeth. Jace can't defend himself. Elspeth can. Plus she makes her minion fly. That's when Baby Jace starts to feel like Tippi Hedren.

Round 5: Garruk. Okay, K-Hammer may be the shizz in standard, but Garruk is a green machine. (So much better than the original big wheel!) Sure, Koth can make a nasty 4/4 attacking land, but the turn after Garruk hits the table he is sending over several trampling fatties to make meatsauce of the red planeswalker.

Round 6: Venser. Tough one. Sarkhan hurts himself to make dragons. Venser ignores them and swings for the kill.

Round 7: Elspeth. She's not as good as her former self, but Elspeth still works in a weenie deck. When it comes to weenies, size matters. Elspeth totes the bigger sword.

Round 8: Ajani. It would help if Lilliana's first ability was "discard a card at random", but it's not. Maybe if her second ability was Demonic Tutor , instead of Worldly Tutor . She allows opponents to stick around for too long. Ajani takes advantage and beats face.

Jace, the Mind Sculptor vs. Nissa Revane

well, yeah. jace.

Gideon Jura vs. Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas

much as I like my gidjinz, tezz has to win this one because of the combination of card advantage and big dudes.

Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker vs. Ajani Goldmane

nicky makes ajani go pouf.

Elspeth, Knight-Errant vs. Jace Beleren

elspeth. makes jace go splat on a wall. flying 4/4s are pretty good i hear.

Garruk Wildspeaker vs. Koth of the Hammer

hammertime is pretty good, but garruk lets me toss out a turn 4 Grave Titan , and that pretty much ends the party. garruk also overruns, yes.

Venser, the Sojourner vs. Sarkhan the Mad

venser wins because sarkhan's ultimate sucks and venser's, well, doesn't suck.

Sorin Markov vs. Elspeth Tirel

soarin', anti-lifegain and token kill right there...i mean, come on.

Liliana Vess vs. Ajani Vengeant

a villainess is my favourite planeswalker, but to be fair, jhonny v would pulp her in a head to head matchup.

3) Bolas - winner of most ridiculous pw ever.

6) I dislike both. Sarkhan's ultimate is much more playable than vensers though.

7) Sorin

8) Ajani in constructed, Lily in draft... but Ajani. Sorry, babe.

March 14, 2011 1:57 p.m.

Prophylaxis says... #14

  1. Nissa Revane

Jace is just going to Unsummon those elves until his loyalty gets to zero. He can't do anything if a card:Nissa's Chosen is threatening to kill him.

  1. Gideon Jura

First turn: Gideon becomes 6/6 and destroys Tezzeret. I like Tez, but Jura is just going to beat him down.

  1. Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker

+3 destroys Goldmane and gives the dragon 1 more turn before 777. Loved the Test of Metal reference there. Loved the novel, but that was so confusing.

  1. Elspeth, Knight-Errant

Elspeth makes a Soldier token. Then she gives her Soldier token +3/+3 and flying. That Soldier slays Jace, who was too busy drawing cards.

  1. Koth of the Hammer

I initially had a hard time deciding who would win, but Wildspeaker is just going to spawn 3/3 Beast tokens, reducing his loyalty, while Koth is just going to attack with the Mountain, which Garruk's Beast token blocks. Repeat.

  1. Venser, the Sojourner

These guys can't kill a planeswalker. Coin toss time!

heads

Venser wins!

  1. Sorin Markov

Sorin spams his +2, while Elspeth is unable to kill Sorin because she has to make 3 Soldier tokens to do anything against him which have summoning sickness, which reduces her loyalty by two, while Sorin finishes her off.

  1. Ajani Vengeant

This is difficult. If Liliana went first...

  1. Discard. 6 loyalty.
  2. Ajani helixes her. 3 loyalty. Ajani has 1 loyalty.
  3. Discard. 4 loyalty.
  4. Ajani activates his +1. 2 loyalty.
  5. Discard. 5 loyalty.
  6. Ajani +1. 3 loyalty.
  7. Discard. 6 loyalty.
  8. Ajani helix. 3 loyalty.

  1. Ajani helix. 1 loyalty. Liliana down to 2.

  2. Discard. 3.

  3. +1. 2.

  4. Discard. 4.

  5. Ajani +1. 3.

  6. Liliana uses her +1. 5 loyalty.

  7. Helix. down to 2.

  8. Discard. 3.

Same thing - loop. Coin toss time!

tails

Ajani wins!

but prophylaxis, wouldnt gideon then have summoning sickness if he turns in a creature right away?

March 16, 2011 2:56 p.m.

YES.

Gideon indeed does have summoning sickness.

So...the line should have read: "First turn: Gideon becomes 6/6 and feels terrible and vomits while Tezzeret searches for trinnkets. Then on second turn: he destroys Tezzeret. I like Tez, but Jura is just going to beat him down."

Tezzeret uses his ultimate move to destory gideon and drain him of all of his life. HE then searches his mind for a Throne of Geth summons it sits on it, and enjoys a nice Shot of goldshlagger.

No. 3 Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker vs. No. 14 Ajani Goldmane

Nicol Bolas Sits on his bloody throne of elder dragon lore, As ajani enters the building with a pack of lionen all Screaming for vengeance. Ajani Bellows giving his bretheren the power needed to fight. Nicol bolas kills ajani...and then takes a nap.

No. 5 Garruk Wildspeaker vs. No. 12 Koth of the Hammer

The crowd screams as Garruk and Koth enter the field. Garruk petting his card:Garruk's Companion good bye and Koth Kissing card:Koth's Courier farewell. Garruk begins by creating a large beast to fight for him. Koth turns the red ground he stands on into a creature and has it attack garruck. His beast protects him. Garruk taps five mana untaps two of them taps them again and plays an Thorn Elemental . Koth makes one mana for all five mountain he controls and then taps then for ten summoning Dragon Tyrant . Garruck has thorn elemental attack. Koth dies with his courier crying over his body. As garruk Sets on a tree stump and drinks a large mug of Ale.

I'll do the last three later.

I have to give it to Garruk. Koth is good in standard and all, but Garruk is a staple in almost every green deck out there short of legacy and vintage. Koth might be good in standard, but he just can't compare to the versatility of Garruk.
