††In the case of any ties, the design team will decide upon the winner.

Chavest Judge Finalists

## Graa-kaz the Ruthless
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
The design team though that the second ability could be dropped, as it really seemed a bit out of place, but we liked the flavor of a Judge that punished you for being cautious. Another suggestion was that Graa-kaz should attack each turn if able.
## Hell, Executioner of Chavest
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
It was thought that the CMC and ability cost could use an increase, or that the ability would just happen during upkeep, to keep with the Demon type of drawback.
## Inquisition Incarnate
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
Casting cost balanced out to 1BBRR, and remove deathtouch, as it just seemed tacked on.
## Maso, The Sadist
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
We thought that the card had great internal synergy. Another suggestion was that it should deal damage to every creature, including itself. The opponent's creature will have to survive 3 first strike damage to deal damage to it. If it can't then, it gets to reap the rewards. It might make the game more interesting by having players think more about the interactions here.
## Oxola Judge of Mayhem
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
Team thought that the ability didn't need to tap and with that make it a 5/3.
##Erhalv Judge of Offense
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
We thought it had good color flavor, but was maybe overcosted in CC and ability. if the creature dealt the damage, instead of life loss, lifelink would activate automatically (making the card less wordy, but doing the same thing).
##Varhas, Flayer of the Flesh
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
X always needs to have a value. Without the ability being activated, it doesn't, so that needs to be changed. We would have it gain Cleave X until end of turn when the ability is used, instead of it always having cleave.
##Azariel, the Oppressor
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
Perhaps just forbidding non-basic lands, or having some kind of mana cost to play lands (but might be a bit complicated).
##Hakrak, Itinerant Justice
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
Flavor was great, but not really a surprise after the first time its played, so does it need to bounce?
##Resolution Incarnate
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
There was a concern that both dealing damage to each other creature AND gaining life seems like too much here. It basically nullifies the damage you took and lessens the chance of getting hit again by clearing the board (which also makes it feel like it has little internal synergy).
###Information about Chavest. Chavest is scrublands that lead to a treacherous volcanic range. The general tone for the shard is nihilistic and dark. Chavest is a land united under an iron rule, after a series of bitter conflicts and adjustments. ####Main Creature Types 1) demons - bound to Chavest by an unknown being Demons are generally humanoid but with massively muscular bodies, twisted, horned faces, clawed limbs, and in many cases leathery wings, demons embody the suffering and evil desires of ordinary races.
2) angels - also bound to Chavest by an unknown being, Angels have an extremely strong sense of justice and often devote their lives - and their deaths - to its cause, whatever it may be.
3) humans - Tough minded, hearty and adaptable.
4) imps - imps are barely-sentient, feral pests.
5) viashino - The Viashino are intelligent humanoids with lean, muscular builds. These Lizard-Folk are descended from dragons. Quick, agile, and vicious when required.
6) pheonix - rare and special, the pheonix embodies the driving force of the current, all encompassing Chavest faith, Redemption through destruction. ####Note : We are allowing creatures to be Angels and Demons at the same time. Subtypes include: knight, cleric, judge, barbarian/berserker, rogue. ####Themes/Mechanics Cleave X (whenever this creature deals combat damage to a blocking creature it deals X damage to that creatures controller.)
The mechanics of course include the evergreen keywords (deathtouch, defender, double strike, enchant, equip, first strike, flash, flying, haste, indestructible, intimidate, landwalk, lifelink, protection, reach, regenerate, shroud, trample, and vigilance). ####To Recap : Main Types : demons, angels, humans, imps, viashino, phoenix. Subtypes : knight, cleric, judge, barbarian/berserker, rogue. General themes are land destruction, sweepers, burn, creature removal, Life Gain/Drain, anti-land, and sacrifice.

I vote for Varhas, flayer of flesh, as it is alot like a submission i made.

as for changing it, Take away cleave X. replace it with, "Whenever Varhas, Flayer of Flesh deals damage to to a creature, have Varhas, Flayer of Flesh gain cleave X until end of turn where X is the converted mana cost of the creatrure Varhas, Flayer of Flesh dealt damage to.

Plus make the cost for manditory blocking more, as i play tested with my card, and it is really powerful.

And it seems so much more like a R/B card to me. With the manditory blocking, and an ability like cleave...

Sorry for double post

I cast my vote to Maso, the Sadist. Change the last ability to a straight Pyroclasm and it should both be interactive and properly costed.

I vote for Hakrak, Itinerant Justice, with the bounce kept because it adds to the already awesome flavor. I also think that the bounce ability could have some potentially interesting gameplay interaction with other cards.

It's not fair that 2 of my cards (Oxola, Judge of Mayhem and Erhalv, Judge of Offense) made it. I can't pick between them! (Actually, my favorite was the R/W one in my cycle.)

Comments on Oxola: Either switch the P/T or remove the tapping, not both. I didn't want him to be able to easily kill himself using his ability.

Comments on Erhalv: Dropping the CMC makes sense. I made the ability the way it was so that it would be life drain, but you're right. Lifelink and damage is the same thing but less clunky.

This is tough, but my vote goes to...

Oxola, Judge of Mayhem!

I'll vote for one of the cards that isn't mine, and I'll vote for Erhalv, Judge of Offense.

I think that a fallen WB angel as a high powered judge is awesome for flavour for the Chavest shard.

I agree with the design team that it's cmc and ability costs are high.

I'd suggest 2WB as casting cost seems fair for an angel with this p/t and ability, without flying.

I'd suggest WB(tap) for the life drain ability as this is white and blacks forte.

I added my card's, Hakrak, Itinerant Justice, bounce ability for flavour really, a Judge travelling around Chavest dispensing justice across the land.

Negative gameplay issues I can think of: It's expensive paying 2WR each turn to give attacking creatures cleave 1. The surprise factor is gone 2nd time you play it.

Possitive gameplay isuues I can think of: The fast, agile viashino can only be affected by instant speed removal.

What do others think?

Oh didn't realise you could vote for yourself. Can I change mine to my card then please? No point hobbling myself I suppose.

wurtnik says... #10

OK thanks for clearing that up squire :)

I'll vote for Hakrak, Itinerant Justice.

I would agree that the bounce isn't entirely necessary as paying 4 each turn can make this card very expensive, although I loved the idea of it :)

@wurtnik No, you can definitely vote for mine! :)

I'll vote for my card, the Executioner of Chavest.

Reasons why YOU should vote for it also:

a. Because I want you to.

b. It's a simple rare.

c. The two abilities have a synergy. The first effect should have "target opponent loses 2 life and you gain 2 life" stapled on it.

The reasons why you shouldn't vote for it:

a. Other rares are more exciting.

b. You prefer Angels to Demons.

c. You don't like the aspect of draining your opponent for just BR.

Totally Going with Maso, the Sadist. Agreed with the change to just straight Pyroclasm .

And I'm not voting for It because of who made it, I really like the idea. It's simple.

My vote is for Varhas, Flayer of Flesh. (surprise, surprise). You're right about X needing a value all the time, and I like your fix; and I do think that R/B is a more appropriate color combination.

other cards: Maso, the sadist is neat, and would be fun if the last ability were actually Volcanic Fallout . He's a sadist, after all -- two damage all around, and there's nothing you can do about it.

as for Hakrak, Itinerant Justice, I think the bounce is an important bit of balance -- the card is a 4-powered first striker that gives everything else cleave 1 -- having to pay 4 per turn for that seems fair, really.

Finally, Azariel, the Oppressor is broken, and I'm sort of suprised it made the list of finalists -- denying people the ability to play lands breaks the game completely. If he destroyed one target land when he came in, and then forbid the playing of nonbasics, it would be playable. Actually, he'd be really fun in a white recursion deck.

My vote is for Varhas, Flayer of the Flesh

Requested changes...

Remove: Cleave X

Change ability txt to: "Sacrifice a creature: Varhas, Flayer of the Flesh gains Cleave X, where X is the sacrificed creatures converted casting cost. Target creature must block Varhas, Flayer of the Flesh this turn."

See the cool thing about Varhas is

1st: cant be bolted

2nd: When you sac more than one creature it ability becomes exponentially more powerful. This growth is also hindered some by his power so in encourages buffing.

Let me give you a scenario if for example un-buffed sacking two creatures whos casting cost is only 2 each

He would gain Cleave 2 & Cleave 2 and because Deathtouch allows it to deal 1 damage to each creature blocking both Cleave 2 abilities would trigger twice for a total of 8 damage!

Taking it one step further.. if you had somehow buffed its attack power you could sac addition creatures to add additional cleave and trigger all cleave abilities more times by dealing damage to more creatures.

A Varhas with say a giant growth would allow maxum effect of sac'ing up to 5 creatures even if the casting cost of all 5 creatures sac'ed is only 1 the cleave damage is 25!!!

Graa-kaz the Ruthless should have the attack each turn clause and Haste instead of exiling.

I agree with the design team about Hell, Executioner of Chavest. The sacrificing should happen on upkeep and happen to all players. I also think the life loss and gain should be changed to something a bit more flavorful. Like Hell gets +X/+0 where X is equal to the power of creature target opponent sacrificed.

I read the name, Inquisition Incarnate, and I immediately thought discard. I am sadly disappointed. I'm gonna go farther than the design team and say everything besides haste seems tacked on. I would have made it Haste, Cleave 2, when Inquisition Incarnate deals combat damage to a player, that player reveals his hand. You choose a non-land card with converted mana cost less than or equal to the damage done. That player discards it.

Maso, The Sadist needs to have at least straight Pyroclasm . Volcanic Fallout would be a cool idea also. Just wondering, can you stack the effects so that when first strike causes Cleave to activate causing it pyroclasm the board before non first strike damage resolves? Cause if so the CC might need to be changed to something like 2BRR.

I don't know about Oxola Judge of Mayhem. He doesn't seem chaotic enough. And his CC is misleading. I feel his ability is more black than red. Maybe all the changes brought up by the design team AND an attack all turns when able clause?

Erhalv Judge of Offense would be neat as a flying 5/2 with his current ability without the tap, costing only WB and making it deals damage.

Both Azariel, the Oppressor and Resolution Incarnate are overpowered.

Azariel's ETB effect should be changed to when he deals combat damage i.e. When Azariel deals combat damage to target player, destroy target land that player controls. His second ability should be changed to Your opponents can't play land cards if they have more lands than you.

Resolution Incarnate seems to be just a jumbled mess of powerful abilities. Would be better as a vigilance, haste, lifelink, WR: Resolution Incarnate deals 1 damage to target creature. Tap that creature.

Would it be okay to bring time counters into this just for Hakrak, Itinerant Justice? It'd be cool if instead of the bounce, he was just exiled at end step for a few turns.

It's a hard choice between Hakrak and Varhas when it comes to voting for the person behind the card.

I vote Hakrak.
