Congratulations to dude1818 for getting the most votes! We will be contacting you to get you your prize, a $25 dollar gift certificate to CoolStuffGames and to have you help finish off the Judges cycle (BW and RW). The design team would like to thank CoolStuffGames and yeaGO for the opportunity to give out neat prizes.

Chavest White Rare Winners

##Guardian of Chavest by Prophylaxis
Took off the dealing damage, as it was a bit overpowered and off colored. It did fit the shard , but too red. From there we just increased the casting cost of the card, since it is a flying Haze Frog/Safe Passage hybrid kinda. So the CMC increased by 1.
##Just Retribution by dude1818
CC changed from 3WWW to 4WW. Since this is a multicolor set, it is better for it to have less white in the casting cost, so it is playable in limited.
##War of Attrition by landot
This guy got a +1 to CMC because of the potential for wiping the board. Other than that, we just smoothed out the wording to match oracle text for Chain of Acid.

Chavest's Multicolor Rare Challenge

For the next Chavest card creation challenge, you will be creating three rares of various colors to finish out the shard. From this challenge the design team will select the best cards submitted for each of the colors to be voted upon in the next challenge. These are the guidelines you must follow:

1) You are submitting up to 3 entries, the cards man be either a mono-black card, mono-red card, or all three colors (black/white/red). This would exclude all cards that are mono-white, W/R, W/B or R/B.

2) The cards can be creatures, enchantments, sorceries, or instants.

3) If the card has any mana symbols on it, they can only be Chavest's colors (black, red, white). White in the casting cost, Red Black or White in activated abilities, etc.

4) Other than Cleave, the only keywords that may appear on the card must be evergreen (deathtouch, defender, double strike, enchant, equip, first strike, flash, flying, haste, indestructible, intimidate, landwalk, lifelink, protection, reach, regenerate, shroud, trample, and vigilance). This means things like multikicker, kicker, cycle, etc are NOT allowed.

5) Each person may submit a maximum of three entries total.

6) We will be judging based on the following criteria: a) Effectiveness (Does the card actually work mechanics-wise?) b) Set Cohesion (Does the card fit the flavor for the shard and challenge?) c) Balance (Is the card too overpowered or underpowered both in general and for its rarity?) d) Creativity (Does the card seem fun or is it a clever design?)

Information about Chavest, to help you along.

Chavest is scrublands that lead to a treacherous volcanic range. The general tone for the shard is nihilistic and dark. Chavest is a land united under an iron rule, after a series of bitter conflicts and adjustments.

Main Creature Types

1) demons - bound to Chavest by an unknown being Demons are generally humanoid but with massively muscular bodies, twisted, horned faces, clawed limbs, and in many cases leathery wings, demons embody the suffering and evil desires of ordinary races.
2) angels - also bound to Chavest by an unknown being, Angels have an extremely strong sense of justice and often devote their lives - and their deaths - to its cause, whatever it may be.
3) humans - Tough minded, hearty and adaptable.
4) imps - imps are barely-sentient, feral pests.
5) viashino - The Viashino are intelligent humanoids with lean, muscular builds. These Lizard-Folk are descended from dragons. Quick, agile, and vicious when required.
6) pheonix - rare and special, the pheonix embodies the driving force of the current, all encompassing Chavest faith, Redemption through destruction.

Note : We are allowing creatures to be Angels and Demons at the same time.

Subtypes include: knight, cleric, judge, barbarian/berserker, rogue.

Themes/Mechanics

Cleave X (whenever this creature deals combat damage to a blocking creature it deals X damage to that creatures controller.)

The mechanics of course include the evergreen keywords (deathtouch, defender, double strike, enchant, equip, first strike, flash, flying, haste, indestructible, intimidate, landwalk, lifelink, protection, reach, regenerate, shroud, trample, and vigilance).

To Recap : Main Types : demons, angels, humans, imps, viashino, phoenix. Subtypes : knight, cleric, judge, barbarian/berserker, rogue. General themes are land destruction, sweepers, burn, creature removal, Life Gain/Drain, anti-land, and sacrifice.

hmm. I think imps need more love. so here's my first entry. I probably don't have the wording right -- the intent is that the first bonus should go to monoblack creatures, and the second ability should stack with that, but only go to imps -- so monoblack imps would get +2/+2. I don't know what the commons and uncommons in this set look like, but I would love to see a draftable imp deck.

About Bog Packleader: what is its P/T?

Wording change:

Other Imp creatures get +1/+1."

About Forced Austerity: 10 life seems like way too much.

May 5, 2011 1:05 a.m.

landot says... #25

good catch! thanks. P/T should be either 2/2 or 3/2. and I didn't use that wording because i'm not sure that 'monocolored' has any official rules meaning? I sorta think it doesn't, and I try to stick by wizards wording as much as possible.

I don't think 10 is to much -- either everyone loses a few permanents, or one player gets beat down -- it's sorta like a version of browbeat worth being printed at rare.

May 5, 2011 1:47 a.m.

The rares and mythics are almost all designed by the community. There are a few spots (1 each) set aside for the design team members. The commons and uncommons will also be a collaboration between the design team and the tappedout community. We are not exactly sure what that will look like yet, but it is being planned.

Anyway, the uncommons and commons are after all of the mythic and rare slots are finished, which is actually pretty soon

So, yeah. Here's my entries. A bit rushed, and not as polished as I'd like. Chavian Elder I'm pretty satisfied with bit the other two I feel need some tweaking.

Entry #1:

~~~~~
Chavian Elder
WBR
Creature - Human Cleric
First strike
When Chavian Elder is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, you may search your library for a card, put it into your hand, then shuffle your library. If you do, you lose 3 life.
3/1
~~~~~

Chav's Yavimaya Elder . First strike is classically shared among W, B, and R alike. The land-searching becomes tutoring for a specific card a la Cruel Tutor, though the damage is changed to three because the effect is overall better considering what the tutor effect is attached to.

I considered 2/1 for a while, and it might be more balanced, but somehow a 3/1 for 3 felt better.

Entry #2:

~~~~~
Purity Through Destruction
2WBR
Enchantment
If a creature you own would be destroyed, exile it instead.
At the beginning of your upkeep, if any creatures are exiled with Purity through Destruction, sacrifice it.
When Purity through Destruction is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, put all creatures exiled with it onto the battlefield, then exile it.
~~~~~

For some reason I've really latched on to this religious drive for "purity through destruction." I've also been striving to make interesting cards that interact with Chav's wrath effects. The obvious straightforward use is protecting your army from an enemy's wrath effect, but the subtler tactic is protecting them from your own.It's potentially quite strong, but most of the time it will instead only get a creature or two back - your enemy is going to work to "waste" it with only one or two bodies rather than using a mass removal spell. It's really more of a deterrant and/or stalling maneuver.

Entry #3:

~~~~~
Demon of Second Chances
4WBR
Creature - Angel Demon
Flying, first strike
WWBBR: Put target creature card in a graveyard onto the battlefield under your control. It has haste and must attack this turn if able. At the end of the turn, if it is in the graveyard, exile it.
5/4
~~~~~

I'm really not sure about most of this guy's pieces, but I like the flavor behind it, and I'm out of time to riddle it out. Maybe he'll be interesting enough for you guys to solve it; if not, no harm done in throwing him out there.

The ability represents a demon signing contracts with damned souls. The soul gets a second chance at life, but must throw itself into combat, and if it fails it gets punished; if it lives, it's rewarded. (That's the angel side of things.)

About Demon of Second Chances: How about "If it would be put into the graveyard from the battlefield this turn, exile it instead."

MagnorCriol says... #48

That does flow better. I'm worried about the ability looking too much like an unkeyed Unearth, but it's going to look close no matter what, probably. In any case your wording retains the same functionality.

"WWBBR: Put target creature card in a graveyard onto the battlefield under your control. It gains haste and must attack this turn if able. If it would be put into the graveyard this turn, exile it instead."

May 11, 2011 1:27 p.m.

Chavest Anarchist

R

Creature - Human Berserker Rogue

Cleave 4

W: Target creature blocks Chavest Anarchist this turn if able.

I like the imp but I think it would be better:

KAMAKAZI IMP

RR

Creature - Imp

If ( CARDNAME ) deals combat damage to a player, you may sacrifice ( CARDNAME ). If you do, destroy target non-land permanent that player controls.
