So now we are continuing to move forward with filling in uncommon slots. If you remember from previous chalenges, we have stated that old cards submitted will be considered for slots in lesser rarity. So if you put a card out there a while ago, you might see it getting a second chance.
So this is how this is going to work. For each color set in the shard we will tell you how many available slots there are for cards. Then you will vote and submit changes for cards. Then with the remaining slots new design chalenges will be held.
We are going to start with the BUG shard, Ulgris. Here is some information on Ulgris as well as the accepted cards so far, to consider while voting.
http://tappedout.net/mtg-articles/2011/sep/5/community-set-ulgris-summary/
There are 3 mono-green slots available for Ulgris uncommons in the set. Four of the cards submitted for previous challenges were selected as possible fillers for these spots.
Acrid Leech by leon_raymond
Design team comments: We like this as a smaller guy taking an idea from land leech. As an uncommon we would like it to be: Acrid Leech 2GG Creature - Leech Wither, first strike 2/2
Guardvark by leon_raymond
Design team comments: So we actually like this card, but the flavor is a problem. The name and type are cute but aarvarks are not known for attacking bird I'm pretty sure. We would just suggest a change of name to "Guard Spider" and the creature type to become spider as well.
Latchvein Canopy by BrownDog5117
Design team comments: This card was originally submitted for a different shard but we felt with a couple of changes it fits well in a place where the environment is out to get you. here is our suggested take on it, very similar. Latchvein Canopy 3G Creature - Plant Wall Reach If a creature dealt damage by Latchvein Canopy is put into a graveyard from play, you may put a +1/+1 counter on Latchvein Canopy. 1/4
Ooze-Rot Fungus by Carn13
Design team comments: Members of the design team could not determine whether or not this was an uncommon or a common. No changes to the card were suggested, we just want the rarity to be solid. The card is playable as is with some edits to the rules text. |
There are 2 mono-black slots available for Ulgris uncommons in the set. Four of the cards submitted for previous challenges were selected as possible fillers for these spots.
Abrupt Mortification by leon_raymond
Design team comments: The only suggestion that we had was maybe changing the cost to XBB.
Iguanid, Burrowing Thrinax by Jarrod_0067
Design team comments: Much of the design team felt that any iteration of this card is OP. One member gave this as a possible uncommon design: Iguanid, Burrowing Thrinax 3BB Creature - Lizard Whenever you would draw a card you may pay 3 life. If you do, skip your next draw and return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand. 2/2
Ulgrisian Fly by ilikeoldcardsbetter
Design team comments: We all liked the card, but wanted different changes made. One person wanted it to stay as is, one wanted deathtouch to switch to wither, and another wanted this to be as is wil 0/1 for P/T.
Waning Landscape by leon_raymond
Design team comments: This is way OP as is but this was suggested wording to make it an uncommon: Waning Landscape 3b Enchantment-aura Enchant land Enchanted land has, "any time this land is tapped put a -1/-1 counter on a creatures you control." |
There are 3 mono-blue slots available for Ulgris uncommons in the set. Two of the cards submitted for previous challenges were selected as possible fillers for these spots.
Mist Hunter by IronHead
Design team comments: All members felt that shroud has to go. we all also wanted a decrease in P/T. Some of the suggestions were 2/3. 3/2, and 1/2.
Will of the Masses by leon_raymond
Design team comments: Design team all agreed that this is an ok uncommon as is but might make more sense with a casting cost of "GU" since it has a "creature matters" aspect to it. |
There is 1 Black/Blue slot available for Ulgris uncommons in the set. Two of the cards submitted for previous challenges were selected as possible fillers for these spots.
Food for my Body,Poison for your Brain by Yourman
Design team comments: Some rephrasing to do here, nothing huge, but we liked the card. The name needs to change because it is too long for the field.
Ravenous Eel-Mass by Carn13
Design team comments: Most members feel that with blinking abilities this card is too strong for an uncommon. One member felt that as long as it has a weak P/T like 2/2 it would be ok. |
There is 1 Black/Blue/Green slot available for Ulgris uncommons in the set. No cards from previous challenges were slected to fill this spot.
There is 1 Black/Blue/Green slot available for Ulgris uncommons in the set. One of the cards submitted for previous challenges was selected as a possible filler for this spot.
Reaping Menace by ilikeoldcardsbetter
Design team comments: Some members liked this as a 3/3 or 3/1. One member voted it down because of the power level to having trample and deathtouch at the same time. |
Sad little guy. He wants to be a card (queue Sarah McLachlan music) but he has no home. We liked him, but no slots are avalable at the uncommon level. We could keep him until the next set in the block or maybe fit him by changing colors or kick his butt to the curb. Your call community.
Ethereal Ooze by leon_raymond
Design team comments: Design team was fine with this as an uncommon, it was suggested by a member that this card have defender and be a 0/4. |
Voting
So here is how voting will go down:
- Each person casting a vote should cast a vote of "yes" or "no" for each card shown above.
- After your votes for each card you may include a justification or suggestion for changes to the card. Changes for cards that are more severe will be considered more than they would be with rares.
So what happens after voting? After voting we will add the cards that had more votes "for" than "against" to the set. The cards will have modifications made to them based on your suggestions and power level. The cards that have more votes "against" than "for" will be pitched to the side. If all of these cards are ousted, then we will start from scratch with challenges to design cards for all of the slots.
All votes must be submitted by Wednesday, November 23rd 2011.

Guardvark- agreed that the type should be changed. Im all for an aardvark card, just not one that kills flyers. Maybe insects that can fly.Latchvein Canopy- agree with designersAbrupt Mortification- I think double black will suffice, still think it is a little OP but tolerable. Ulgresian fly- 1/1 drop deathtouch for wither. I hate both blue cards equally. Etheral Ooze- i like this card but I honestly don't know what suggestions to make. It must have defender, of that I am sure. It is somewhere between Wall of Denial and Guard Gomazoa .

Acrid Leech - yes. I like the design team's suggested tweak.
Guardvark - yes. It needs to be a spider.
Latchvein Canopy - no. I like the design team's idea, but I think Ulgris shouldn't have any +1/+1 counters. It has wither and -1/-1 counters instead.
Ooze-rot Fungus - no. It's definitely too complicated to print at common. Also, it's missing its P/T.
Abrupt Mortification - yes. What if it was XB and "Only spend black mana this way"?
Iguanid, Burrowing Thrinax - yes. I like its interactions with Irindu. My problem is with its name; it sounds like a legendary creature. What if it was just Burrowing Thrinax?
Ulgrisian Fly - no. I agree that deathtouch should change to wither, and think the cost would be better as 1B.
Waning Landscape - yes. It should be whenever enchanted land is tapped for mana, not just tapped in general.
Mist Hunter - yes. I like off-color activation cost. I don't like trample, though. What about cutting shroud and making the green activated ability hexproof? Also drop the P/T to 2/3.
Will of the Masses - no. If it is used, I believe it should be GU and "Target player puts the top card of his or her library into his or her graveyard for each creature you control."
Food for my Body, Poison for your Brain - no. The name sucks and the ability seems more appropriate for a rare.
Ravenous Eel-Mass - no. A creature with an ETB effect that makes -1/-1 counters is good, but this has too much going on. It should also be a Fish, not Eel Swarm. Also, it's missing its P/T.
Reaping Menace - yes. Maybe as a 4/2?
Ethereal Ooze - no. Not a fan.

Green
Acrid Leech - Yes-the team suggestion but make first strike vigilance
Gaurdvark - Yes an argument for keeping the name, they eat termites which do fly.)(and we will have allot of insects on this shard)
Latchvein canopy - NO
Ooze-rot Fungus - yes
Black
Abrupt mortification - Yes-no changes
Iguanid, Burrowing Thrinax - NO to complicated at anything but rare
Ulgresian fly - no we kind of already have one squadron hawk variant...and this is almost better.
Waning Landscape - Yes with the teams changes (these kind of cards need to be in the set)
Blue
Mist Hunter - NO
Will of the masses - Yes-make it the amount of creatures you control
Blue/Black
Food for my body, Poison for your brain - no to complicated on uncommon.
Ravenous Eel-mass - yes make it one creature get rid of flash.
B/U/G
Reaping Menace - Yes get rid of flying make it a 3/3
Other
Ethereal Ooze - YES-get rid of the black green slot and make it blue green.
November 17, 2011 3:50 p.m.
Arid Leech: Yes but make it a 3/3 with wither and vigilance
Guardvark: Yes but make it a spider.
Latchvine Canopy: No. Wizards rarely does -1/-1 counters and +1/+1 counters in the same block and almost never in the same set. No way to make this work.
Ooze Rot Fungus: Yes
Abrupt Mortification: Yes and I think at uncommon its fine as is. Basically a black Fireball .
Ulgrisian Fly: Yes but drop the deathtouch altogether and change its mana cost to 1B. Even then its still really abusable with sac engines and equipment.
Waning Landscape: No, we have enough mass removal in this set.
Mist Hunter: Yes with all the changes suggested by dude1818
Will of the Masses: Yes but change the cost to 1gu
Food for my body, poison for your brain: No. As a repeatable hard to remove effect its to powerful and too complex for anything short of rare.
Ravenous Eel Mass: Yes with a low p/t.
Reaping Menace: No. Deathtouch + Trample on one card should be a rare combo. Also no part of that is blue and I'd like to avoid Alara's chief problem of having multicolored cards that didnt need to be multicolored.
Ethereal Ooze: Yes but add defender and drop the illusion subtype.
November 17, 2011 8:20 p.m.
Also for Etheral Ooze I support the change from gu to gb.
November 17, 2011 9:03 p.m.
Oh and for Iguanid, Burrowing Thrinax I vote yes with the proposed changes.
November 17, 2011 9:04 p.m.
Jarrod_0067 says... #9
@all I created Iguanid, Burrowing Thrinax originally as a legendary creature (probably forgot to add that in the original) as replacement effects don't stack and it would balance it in a way because that was another way to remove it. However, I propose my own changes if you don't mind?
Burrowing Thrinax 2BB
Creature - Lizard
When Burrowing Thrinax enters the battlefield, you may return target creature card with converted mana cost 3 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield.
At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice a creature.
2/2
This way it feels like Gravedigger + Sun Titan combined, while being not as good as either of them
Bare in mind, I made this card so it could have synergy with Sprouting Thrinax , his older brother
November 17, 2011 9:38 p.m.
I think I actually left out the legendary by accident. Sorry about that.
BTW Jarrod, you should put in your votes
November 17, 2011 9:56 p.m.
I'm sorry this is vague, but a whole lot of these look way too overpowered.
November 17, 2011 11:27 p.m.
Jarrod_0067 says... #12
I'm only really interested in Ulgrisian Fly but only if it gets heavily nerfed. At the moment it is a better Squadron Hawk
One suggestion I have is make the player pay life to activate the ability.
EG "when this creature dies, you may pay 2 life. If you do, search your library blah blah blah..."
November 18, 2011 2:35 a.m.
Nobilior. That is because people designed them as rares but there were not enough slots in rare. These were some that we thoughts could be altered to make uncommons. Not as they are

Green
Acrid Leech: NO - I might be okay with this if it just had wither and regenerate. With all three, it becomes too powerful in limited. Mono green only gets first strike in extreme cases (and hasn't since Mirri, Cat Warrior in tenth addition), so I don't agree with giving it first strike.
Guardvark: YES - I'm fine with the mechanics, but agree that the flavor needs to be changed. I like the idea of it being a Frog ala Anurid Swarmsnapper . Why do you have to sacrifice it to kill the flyer? Imagine a frog filled with volatile acid that explodes on impact similar to a paddle ball, where the flyer is the paddle, the frog is the ball, and the frog's tongue is the string.
Latchvein Capnopy - NO - As mentioned, +1/+1 counters should avoid -1/-1 counters.
Ooze-Rot Fungus - YES - I think the best way to clean up the rules text here is to take a nod from Rot Wolf : "Whenever a creature dealt damage by Ooze-Rot Fungus this turn dies, put a 1/1 green Ooze token with wither onto the battlefield." Play-wise, it pretty much accomplishes the same thing as the current wording. As for power and toughness, I propose either a 3/3 or a 2/4.
### Black
Abrupt Mortification - NO - I think this is better off as a common. It's the opposite side of Thrive , which is common and fills a similar role removal-wise as Heat Ray , which is common.
Burrowing Thrinax - NO - As a draw trigger with a replacement effect, this does feel more like a rare, even with the proposed changes.
Ulgrisian Fly - YES - A Swarm that just won't die screams Ulgris. For uncommon, I think the searched card should go to your hand. Also, I'm in the camp that agrees that deathtouch should be changed to wither.
Waning Landscape - NO - I would like this a lot more if it were more similar to Contaminated Ground (if it had a CMC of 2, but put a -1/-1 counter on one of their creatures instead of having them lose life). However, that would be a common. If it puts them on all creatures they control, I think this would be a rare (despite the cost).
### Blue
Mist Hunter - YES - A creature that can potentially have both deathtouch and trample excites me. It's one of those cards that makes players who might not know about how those two mechanics interact to ask questions and investigate the rules. I love that. At uncommon though, I would remove shroud and make it a 2/3.
Will of the Masses - YES - I think milling equal to twice your creature count may be too much for a CMC of 1. Either the CMC should increase or the number of cards milled should decrease.

mistergreen527 says... #16
Blue/Black
Food for My Body, Poison for Your Brain - NO - I like the basic thought behind this, but I think there's too much going on here. Maybe if the ability cost one mana, no life, and required cards to be put on the bottom as part of the cost, I would like it better.
Ravenous Eel-Mass - YES - I think this just needs to be toned down a bit. Keep the current CMC, make the ability only trigger upon entering, distribute only 1 -1/-1 counter per target, and make it a 2/2.
### Green/Blue/Black
Reaping Menace - NO - As I said before, I like the idea of havin deathtouch and trample together on one creature, but I like the way that Mist Hunter executed it better and don't want more than one creature with that combination.
### Green/Blue
Ethereal Ooze - YES - I would be okay with this as a Blue/Black card as is.
November 19, 2011 3:01 a.m.
Vote yes for Acrid Leech & Guardvark.Acrid LeechI like this guy as smaller, but wither+first strike is ridiculous at uncommon. only killable by creatures w/ p.t. 4/4 & it dents them up bad. I like the vigilance + wither, maybe keep all abilities but put it at a 2/2 for 2GG. It keeps the same flavor; it's not too big a deal as you're only taking 2 damage from it, and the regenerate makes it a very playable card.GuardvarkYeah, it's cool and should be a spider, but the flash is unnecessary since the sacrifice ability is instant speed anyway. flash just isn't a green ability.Latchvein CanopyWhy doesn't it have defender (it's a wall)? Could make it a spider & keep it as suggested.
(voting yes for Iguanid & Abrupt Mortification).Ulgrisian Fly - no, no, no. First off, black doesn't even have 1/1's with flying and no drawback (see Nightshade Stinger). If it had wither, cost 1B, & put it into your hand, it would probably be okay but still quite strong. When it dies is a good downside.Waning Landscape seems like bad land destruction (as reimagined by design) possibly make it cost 1B - comparable to Contaminated Ground (though it would probably be too strong)Vote yes for Will of the MassesWill of the Masses is fine as is - definitely not worth paying GU for. the 'creature matters' implies green so it fits great with the shard.

It seems like they need some more card suggestions- where can you submit those?
November 19, 2011 12:33 p.m.
mistergreen527 says... #19
@hubatish:
We'll be looking for those in the next article. Stay tuned!
November 19, 2011 12:54 p.m.
@hubatish - I assume you are voting no for ones you did not mention. Let me know so I can record your votes. and as mistergreen527 said, you will get to fill in cards in the next challenge which will be out next week.
Also why are people anti-first strike on the Acrid leach. Remember Land Leeches , the first leech that was made for the game I believe and he was a common. Under the suggestion above the cost and rarity increased from Land Leeches and wither was added. seems fair to me, but you already saw my vote. Just saying, old cards are precedent.
November 19, 2011 2:06 p.m.
Land Leeches was created before a lot of design rules regarding the color pie were implemented.
November 19, 2011 9:54 p.m.
and reprinted after many of them were created, just sayin
November 19, 2011 10:57 p.m.
mistergreen527 says... #23
It was reprinted only 8 months after it was originally printed. Even though mono green normally doesn't have first strike, it can still have some access it to it (Elvish Archers , Emerald Dragonfly , Glissa Sunseeker , Hornet Cobra , Mirri, Cat Warrior , Root Spider , and Spitting Slug ). However, flavor-wise why would a leech have first strike? It has been admitted many times by Wizards team members that design back in the day was disconnected from flavor. Land Leeches is a prime example.
November 20, 2011 1:50 a.m.
alright based on me remembering the timeline completely wrong, I concede the point and will stop fighting for that card to have first strike. It just felt like homage.
I really thought that the dark was way before 4th edition. It has been a while. My love for old cards tainted me again

Acrid Leech - No. As it is, I can't follow this card...a green card, and a leech no less, with vigilance? Also I think a leech would never have a higher toughness than power. What if it was a 3/2 First strike, wither, at 3GG and regenerated for 1 black mana?
Guardvark - Yes. However, that name and creature type have to change. I think the point here, however, is that perhaps we don't need to fall back on spiders as the only thing to hunt flying creatures. Perhaps some sort of overgrown tree frog?
Latchvein Canopy - No. I don't think creature type "wall" gets used much at all anymore, if ever. I think it should be types "Mutant Plant" and add defender to its abilities. Also, here's an idea, what if instead of getting +0/+1 counters, it was a 0/0 and read, " Latchvein Canopy's power and toughness are equal to the number of -1/-1 counters on creatures you don't control." That would pump it, and tie it in with wither. Perhaps give it wither over deathtouch too.
Ooze-Rot Fungus - Yes. Cool idea but it definitely could use some power/toughness. Perhaps 2/3.
Abrupt Mortification - No. As it stands its overpowered. That casting cost and the fact that its instant make it absolutely insane. This would need to be a sorcery and cost something more like XBB. Or you could do something more interesting and leave it as is, but change the wording to "each player distributes up to X -1/-1 counters amongst any number of target creatures."
Iguanid, Burrowing Thrinax - Yes. But this card is way out of wack. Its a Gravedigger on crack. I would make the casting cost 2BB, but go down to a 1/2 and keep the deathtouch. I would word it as follows: "Whenever you would draw a card, you may pay 2 life instead. If you do, return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand." Also that name sounds legendary, drop the Iguanid part.
Ulgrisian Fly - No. This is so above and beyond overpowered. Perhaps something more around 2B casting cost, and a requirement to pay 1 life to search out a replacement. Also that replacement should come into play tapped or something.
Waning Landscape - No. I want to say yes to this card badly, but its kinda out of hand.
Mist Hunter - No. I don't like the feel of this card.
Will of the Masses - No. I respect this idea, but personally if my deck is trying to mill, I probably am not running alot of creatures to get real use out of this.
Food for my Body,Poison for your Brain - No. Too much going on here, including that name.
Ravenous Eel-Mass - No. Overpowered, even at 1/1.
Reaping Menace - No. This card feels rare. Also I am not a fan of having deathtouch and trample on the same creature. It just doesn't feel right.
November 21, 2011 12:55 a.m.
thanks @squire1 I'll be back then for next article. Also, voting no for Mist Hunter, Ravenous Eel Mass, & Reaping Menance. Right now they all just seem very overpowered. I don't really want to say yes or no to any of the others.
November 21, 2011 9:06 a.m.
