Hey there everyone. Great submissions as usual. Now here it is your turn to vote for the cards and decide who we will work with on the rest of the cycle. So here are the finalists:

Flameflow Gate by landot
Creator's Description:
"I wanted to do something that was like the borderposts, which I love, but that featured enemy colors. this submission goes a step further, acting a filters and letting you keep a GG hand with a grip of U/R cards if you're playing Irindu.
naming ideas: Flame, Glade, Flow, Grave, Guard"

Design Team Comments:
The design team felt that the last ability on this card, "T, Sacrifice ~cardname~: return a land from your graveyard to the battlefield.", was a bit too powerful for an uncommon. If that is removed it would be more balanced. As is this could be an oddly strong combo piece in the right deck. It was also suggested that "if you don't, sacrifice CARDNAME." should be added to the ETB ability on this card.
Powerstone of Chavest by Mpz5
Creator's Description:
based on the Signets which were one of my favorite cycles of mana fixing artifacts. Basically since they were commons, and they worked well for the 2 color guilds that they supported, I decided to make mine a bit more useful for the shard that it's in. Because it supplies 3 different colors, I think that it deserves the uncommon rarity.
think that this gives you more colors and it ramps like the others but at the same time it is also more restrictive because you need colored mana to activate the effects. What it will do however, is give you pretty decent mana fixing as well as ramp for any shard.

Design Team Comments:
Having each artifact have three mana abilities makes it kind of repetitive. Each enemy color pairing will be on two cards. Simplifying this so that the lone enemy color filters into the two ally colors (W, T: Add B,R to your mana pool). One ability per. CMC of 1 would probably be fair.
Sorok Amulet by http404error
Creator's Description:
The amulet cycle is not too complex, but I design by KISS. I took the Signets for inspiration, and decided to not obsolete them, as tempting as that was. As a filter, it could undergo various costing changes as testing deems fit.

Design Team Comments:
No description to go off of, but its pretty clear what the cycle is. This card is totally playable as is, but is not the most exciting. Some members of the design team suggested that it come in tapped, but the activation cost be reduced to {2}.
Morglen Collection by Coin.lore
Creator's Description:
No description given.

Design Team Comments:
Everyone in the design team agreed that if it said "first main phase" instead of "upkeep" that this card was great. A nice idea to have passive mana and activated one use mana. If it says "upkeep" as it does now, the entire design team really dislikes this card as it renders it nearly useless.
Lizard Tail by sarpnasty
Creator's Description:
They'd have enter the battlefield effects that were significant to each shard, then they'd have a cost to sacrifice to add mana of each color.
They don't all have to have flash, but some kind of ETB effect and a 2 colorless sacrifice ability that adds all three shard colors.

Design Team Comments:
This card excited one member of the design team more than others, but all of us deemed it as a perfectly playable and balance card that held the theme of the shard without relying upon the spcific special mechanics designed for the set.
Design team cards
Morglen Touchstone by $ªmHεiπ
Creator's Description:
These cycle is pretty easy to get. It generates the central mana color by tapping and generated the other colors of the shard by tapping and sacrificing something that is important to the shard.
Irindu = discard a card
Chavest = sac a land
Morglen = put one of your creatures on top of your library
Ulgris = sac a creature
Sorok = tap an untapped artifact you control
Irindun Caliche by squire1
Creator's Description:
Basically this cycle is meant to replace a land drop for a turn with the additional detration that it can not drop on your first turn.
Dewstone by mistergreen527
Creator's Description:
Very clear and simple filter. It generates the main shard color and filters that color into the other colors of the shard.

Voting

  1. Vote for your favorite cycle. Try to focus more on the cycle concept rather than the sample card alone. Each user may vote for one cycle idea only.
  2. Give us ideas and feedback on what might need to change about that cycle to make it even better or suggestions for othe cards in the cycle.
  3. You are also welcome to give feedback on all of the cycles, just be clear which you vote for.
  4. After votes are tallied, we will contact the winner of this contest and schedule a meeting with them to collaborate on the design of all the cards in the cycle. Then we will present the ful cycle to the community. If a design team member wins the voting (we do not get to vote), then we will meet as usual and complete the cycle.

Other handy hints and things to remember

In this set there is no hybrid mana.
You can use other set mechanics from previous articles. Below is a list of articles explaining each of the five shards designed by the community so far and includes many of the previous winners.

I think Lizard Tail is the only one on here that is worthy of uncommon, appropriately costed, flavourful so it's got my vote.

My only comment is that I think it would be best to ensure the abilities (like regenerate on Lizard Tail) chosen for the other shards are equally non-parasitic as this one. Flow would be bad for example as it renders the cards useless in any other sets.

I'd have to vote for Lizard Tail as well. It has a great ability, although I think it would be better if it only generated G/U. otherwise it's sort of leaning on the rare side.

I'm not a big fan of any of these. I have to vote for Dewstone, though I feel like it could be common.

Yes, I meant "first main phase" instead of "upkeep" for both instances. Sorry about the confusion.

Also, I'm curious whether the mana cost is blank because that is what the mana cost was believed to be, or if it was just accidentally left out.

Nope that was an accident. I will fix it later

I think I like Morglen Collection, obviously with the amendment of "upkeep". I think the casting cost should be 3, as it ramps you one turn on mana production With color diversification and the optional Dark Ritual 1:3 ratio later any time needed during play. Overall I enjoy the idea of extra noninvasive mana production that only can be used on your main phase.

I also had a thought that you could drop the dark ritual part and have it add to its owners mana pool on EACH of his or her main phases effectively producing two mana each turn however restricting the player from using them both on the same spell.

October 15, 2011 9:28 a.m.

Sorok Amulet - I agree with the design team. I think it could come into play tapped, and be activated for just 2 mana. That way it ramps as well as fixes

Lectrys says... #11

I'm voting for Dewstone. It's simple and elegant, and I think the fact that it's a 2 cmc mana rock that produces coloured mana is enough to bump it to uncommon.

squire1, I think Irindun Caliche is too weak for uncommon. The first text should say, "When Irindun Caliche enters the battlefield, lands you control enter the battlefield tapped until end of turn." The second text can stay to prevent it from being play first turn, but totally skipping a land drop to play an artifact is something that most players would avoid because once that artifact gets destroyed, you are set back a turn in terms of mana, not to mention, you had to pay a mana cost to play it in the first place.

squire1 says... #13

Well there is an uncommon land that adds 3 types of mana to your mana pool that enters tapped and is uncommon, since this does not enter tapped you can use it the turn it drops. It just replaces a land drop. Seemed like it was balanced with WOTC standard to me. And since you have to pay 1 to play it, it just requires that another land is tapped that turn, making you break even with dropping a slow land. You could be right though.

If I can vote (for someone else's, ofc), I'll pick Touchstone.

HOWEVER, Touchstone is OP at a cost of one, producing a color and such. Make it two and we're golden. :P

If you'd like to put up a description (up to you), make it: "The amulet cycle is not too complex, but I design by KISS. I took the Signets for inspiration, and decided to not obsolete them, as tempting as that was. As a filter, it could undergo various costing changes as testing deems fit."

I really do like how my artifact works, so I will vote for Morglen Collection.

Just a little bit of my back story into the artifact:

I imagined a small clay vase shape with a tiny hole at the top literally implanted in the ground and gathered mana directly from the ground into a 'liquid' substance (more of a condensed state). When the artifact is full, the collector would call the feel of the mana they needed and the liquid would evaporate and the planeswalker (or other mana user) would gather the mana they had culled (not sure if right terms). If they were to break it when it becomes full they would be able to get at all of the liquid. If they left it alone the liquid would spill out and be completely reabsorbed (it would all spill out, not just the extra, because of how it was condensed).

I'm going to vote for Lizard Tail if it doesn't make me look like a tool lol.

I really like Samheit's cycle except for the sorok touchstone. This only makes the player tap an untapped artifact. This means that it can easily be used the next turn because the artifact will untap during the next turn. All of the other ones get rid of a resource, this just taps it. I think "return an artifact you control to your hand" would be a lot more balanced for the cycle.

I like sarpnasty's mod to the sorok card - I was kinda stuck on an in theme price to pay for the sorok one. Pick up an artifact is good, but maybe too abusable (Ornithopter )? maybe sac an artifact ?

October 16, 2011 10:02 p.m.

Mpz5 says... #28

You could always say: return an artifact you control with CMC equal to or greater than 1 to your hand.

That gets around that problem.
