This pack

Missing were an unknown rare, two unknown commons, Vengeful Vampire, Grim Flowering, Scorch the Fields, Crushing Vines (by us), Niblis of the Mist, Russet Wolves, Gravepurge, and Ray of Revelation.

Still remaining were Skirsdag Flayer, Executioner's Hood, Ravenous Demon  Flip, and Island.

Caley autodrafted Executioner's Hood.

You can make a case for the Flayer or the Demon as a hate pick, but I think the chances of them really being used effectively is pretty low. The hood, on the other hand, could turn up annoyingly in many circumstances. Really the best pick is Island, but we already have drafted two and we don't want to ruin game balance.

Pick 43

Missing were 1 unknown rare and 3 unknown commons, two copies of Harrowing Journey, Wakedancer, Grim Flowering, Wild Hunger, Talons of Falkenrath, Evolving Wilds (by us), and Loyal Cathar  Flip.

Still available were Gruesome Discovery, Thought Scour, and Plains.

Caley autodrafts Gruesome Discovery.

Pick 44

Missing were 1 unknown rare, 1 unknown uncommon, and 3 unknown commons, plus Avacyn's Collar, Faithless Looting, Hunger of the Howlpack, Gruesome Discovery, Midnight Guard, Executioner's Hood, Break of Day, and Loyal Cathar  Flip (by us).

Still available were Harrowing Journey and Island.

Caley autodrafts Harrowing Journey.

Very tough choice.

Pick 45

Missing were 1 unknown rare, 1 unknown uncommon, and 4 unknown commons, plus Farbog Boneflinger, Curse of Thirst, Falkenrath Torturer, Death's Caress (by us), Black Cat, Heavy Mattock, Talons of Falkenrath, and Favor of the Woods.

Still available was Plains, which Caley autodrafted.

Deckbuilding

Now is the time to head on over to the deck page for our deck to debate its final build. That page can be found here:

.

But wait! Since you're accustomed to posting in the comments, try this one on for size. Rank, in order of "most drafted" to "least drafted," the colors in this draft. Which color do you think was most heavily drafted, and which was least? POST IT. POST IT IN THE COMMENTS. I COMMAND IT. After we finalize our deck build we'll get to see how the draft went down from an omniscient perspective.

Step 1 - Post color thoughts in comments here.

Step 2 - Go to deck page, debate what should be in and what should be out.

Step 3 - Profit.

This article is a follow-up to IDD DDD - Pick 41 The next article in this series is IDD DDD - Match 1 vs. Phelps

Why did you pick the hood over de-drafting the ravenous demon? I would have picked the demon instantly... Now someone playing black could have a powerful threat.

I'm inclined to suggest we utilise all our instants except for GeistflameMTG Card: Geistflame and Crushing VinesMTG Card: Crushing Vines. Reason being that we splash red for flashback as it is and we don't really want to put more than maybe 2-3 mountains in there for such a small amount of red. So we'll be unlikely to cast GeistflameMTG Card: Geistflame until late. Flashback costs will always be there later when we can get a mountain out, but a card we draw and can't use is disadvantaging us. Crushing VinesMTG Card: Crushing Vines is a sideboard card against a spirit or black deck, and is too situational to maindeck.

All three sorcery are very good, two of which are likely to be our bomb-type plays. The Executioner's HoodMTG Card: Executioner's Hood is again probably only sideboard worthy. If we run into a defensive off-colour deck we'll use it. I also don't think we have enough wolves to make the Full Moon's RiseMTG Card: Full Moon's Rise worth playing.

That gives us 9 spells, so we want about 14 creatures. I propose all except Grave BrambleMTG Card: Grave Bramble (good for sideboard), Somberwald SpiderMTG Card: Somberwald Spider (ditto) and Midnight GuardMTG Card: Midnight Guard. Or we can keep the Guard in and run 16 lands. Tricky, but with only two colours we can probably manage it okay. The reason for the Guard being higher priority to put back in is for the Deranged OutcastMTG Card: Deranged Outcast to have more ammo.

Seems to me that we saw very little in the way of red or green. Surprised a bit that green was so scarce.... most heavily drafted... seems like green to me. (which is contrary to what i would normally expect in a draft)

I'll rank by whats going to get played. I'm curious to see how right I am.

  1. Brown - At least six decks will splash colorless mana for rockin artifacts!
  2. Green - I'm also of the opinion we'll see a lot of green. this format has plenty of quality green creatures as well as spells.
  3. Red - We saw very little red. I think thats partially due to the fact that these packs were a little light on the red spells, but regardless there's plenty of red removal in Dark Ascension, I expect to see our creatures fighting one another at the behest of a few red spells.
  4. Blue - We avoided blue, deliberately inhibiting our game to give everyone else a chance. Some greedy mage will have an awesome blue deck and bounce everything forever. A mill deck seems possible, possibly immediately to our right.
  5. White - Too many white pseudo-removal spells tabled, too many fliers came around as late picks. Either they're undervalued or, the more likely, white was disdained. (I originally had blue in 5 and white in 4, but changed my mind.)
  6. Black - Too much removal tabled in multiple packs. The drafter immediately to our left or one beyond it is going to be able to go mono black but may splash for an off-color bomb and flashback value.

  1. Green- We took a bunch of good green, but there were certainly fewer at the end of the draft.
  2. Blue- There was very little good blue passed to us and I have a feeling that we'll see quite a few blue cards.
  3. Red- Not a lot of good burn spells were found and makes me think it'll be in quite a few decks.
  4. White- is a great card and was often passed to us several times. We may be one of the few decks in white.
  5. Black- is still good in draft, the fact that it was passed to us near the very end of the draft tells me that nobody wants black.

How did we take Harrowing JourneyMTG Card: Harrowing Journey over IslandMTG Card: Island?! I mean IslandMTG Card: Island is SOO broken. Would have gone well with our other two.
