KrazyCaley vs. squire1

KrazyCaley's deck - Kon'iro no Shinobi. Ninjas!

Game 1

Squire wins the toss and plays first. He keeps his opener.

Caley mulligans a no-land hand. Then he keeps a hand of 2x Swamp, Jwar Isle Refuge, Arcane Sanctum, Island, and Throat Slitter.

T1

Squire plays Mountain for Mogg Fanatic and passes.

Caley draws Ninja of the Deep Hours, plays Jwar Isle Refuge, and passes. (Caley 21, Squire 20).

I AM NOW WINNING THIS DUEL. SCOREBOARD.

T2

Squire plays Mountain, casts another Mogg Fanatic, attacks with the first one, and passes. (Caley 20, Squire 20).

He's TIED THE GAME! An AMAZING COMEBACK by Squire!

Caley draws Throat Slitter, plays Arcane Sanctum, and passes.

T3

Squire attacks with his Mogg Fanatics and passes. (Squire 20, Caley 18).

Caley draws Mistblade Shinobi. He plays Swamp, casts the Mistblade, and passes.

It has taken an unfortunately long time to get to this point. Usually I have Ornithopters and Flying Men to be ninja bait. I'm sure Squire's goblins seem slow in coming too, though.

T4

Squire attacks with everything and passes. (Squire 20, Caley 16).

Caley draws Swamp, plays Swamp and attacks with Mistblade Shinobi. Squire tries to Burst Lightning it, but Caley responds by smoke bombing in Ninja of the Deep Hours in its place, fizzling the Burst Lightning. Ninja of the Deep Hours hits, and Caley draws a card (another Mistblade Shinobi ). Caley passes. (Squire 18, Caley 16).

Ninjutsu rules refresher: Squire tries to Burst Lightning the Mistblade. Once I ninjutsu in Ninja of the Deep Hours, he can't respond to that by trying another method of killing mistblade (like those Mogg Fanatics, for instance) because pulling UP the unblocked attacker that is going back into your hand is part of the COST of ninjutsu and happens as soon as you choose to activate the effect, even though the effect itself (namely, Ninja of the Deep Hours coming IN) uses the stack as normal.

Also, note that the best time to try and kill ninjas is usually outside of the combat phase, or failing that, when they have been blocked. Otherwise, they are tricky to kill.

T5

Squire attacks with his Moggs. (Squire 18, Caley 14). Then he passes.

Mana screw strikes again.

Caley draws Throat Slitter, plays Island, and attacks with Ninja of the Deep Hours. Going unblocked, Caley ninjas in Throat Slitter. Squire tries to kill the Throat Slitter with Lightning Axe. Caley responds by reninjaing in Ninja of the Deep Hours, pulling up the Throat Slitter. Caley draws Flying Men with the hit from Deep Hours. (Squire 16, Caley 14).

NIIIIINJA

T6

Squire plays a Mountain. He sacrifices one Mogg Fanatic, hitting Caley. (Squire 16, Caley 13). Then he attacks with the other Mogg. (Squire 16, Caley 12). Then he sacrifices the last Mogg. (Squire 16, Caley 11). Then he casts Pyroclasm, killing Ninja of the Deep Hours. (Probably a misclick resulted in him sacrificing one of the Moggs before attacking).

Caley draws Arcane Sanctum and plays it. He casts Flying Men and passes.

T7

Squire plays Mountain and casts Balduvian Horde discarding Fireball. Squire passes.

Caley draws Echoing Truth. He attacks with Flying Men, but ninjas in Throat Slitter, killing Balduvian Horde. (Squire 14, Caley 11) Then he casts Flying Men again and passes.

T8

Squire casts Fireball for 2, killing Throat Slitter, and passes.

Caley draws Blinding Powder. He plays Swamp, casts the Powder, and hooks it up to the Flying Men. Caley attacks with the Flying Men and hits. (Squire 13, Caley 11). Caley passes.

T9

Squire plays Mountain and passes.

Caley draws Mistblade Shinobi. He attacks with Flying Men and passes. (Squire 12, Caley 11).

T10

Squire casts a Mogg Fanatic and passes.

Caley draws Island and plays it. He attacks with Flying Men. He ninjas in Throat Slitter. In response, the Mogg is sacrificed to deal 1 damage to Throat Slitter, which hits. (Caley 11, Squire 10). Caley casts Flying Men again and passes.

T11

Squire does nothing and passes.

Caley draws Whispersilk Cloak. He casts it. He hooks it up to Throat Slitter and puts Blinding Powder on Flying Men. He attacks with both creatures. Squire responds with Volcanic Fallout, killing them and hitting both players. (Caley 9, Squire 8). Caley passes.

T12

Squire casts a kicked Burst Lightning to the face. (Squire 8, Caley 5). He passes.

Caley draws Okiba-Gang Shinobi. He casts it and Mistblade Shinobi, then passes.

T13

Squire casts Lava Axe targeting Caley, winning the duel.

I'm really curious about why squire1 didn't murder the hell out of Mistblade Shinobi and Flying Men at the first available opportunity.

patially because squire1 played competitively back before weatherlight and almost never plays now. Decent deckbuilder, sucky player really. If you notice, all of my articles are about design of cards and decks. i never give play advise because I am not that good anymore.

Ah, that's fair enough. I don't get a tenth as much practice nowadays as I used to, and I can really feel it when I play sometimes.

I was just thinking it might have been something in your hand at the time that made you have a different plan in your head, or that maybe when you started the game you didn't know you were playing against a dedicated Ninja theme deck.

I paid no mind to it. I figured he had his reasons. Given his low mana levels, I thought he was just trying to preserve some stuff on the field.
