Thanks to some outside influence of my teammate and a few overzealous buyers from CoolStuffInc.com when I was in Baltimore I have decided to switch decks. Now I try and I repeat “try” not to switch decks too often and instead work on what I have and make it better but the fact is whenever I pick up a Wolf Run deck I just tear people a new one. I am not bragging or attempting to brag but I played Valakut for a long time and beat Jace, the Mindsculptor, Stoneforge Mystic, and Batterskull in almost every capacity. Granted you also cannot counter lands.

My play style is unique and I have yet to play against another player with my kind of “dumb” luck (as my teammate calls it). When I play a match I get flooded and shorted often which isnt a big deal but I almost ALWAYS draw in my first 7 the one-of in a deck. I am talking to the extent of taking a 60 card library that is UW shuffling it via pile, riffle, and such over 7 times; drawing 7 cards and having that one of Lightning Bolt in my hand (actually did this to test my “dumb” luck). As such in UB control I won over 65% of my games with sticking a Karn Liberated that I had in my opening hand. To make matters worse (or better, idk) I made a 60 card EDH deck in standard and beat my buddies UW Human deck that he finished 6-3 with at Baltimore.

Anyways, I don’t like doing cookie cutter decks or watching people play cookie cutter decks. The reasons are simple; first, your opponent is always prepared for that match up. Secondly, people copy what they see but don’t play the decks effectively (makes it easier for us but gives false pretense of that deck being “bad”). Best example for reason two comes from Baltimore; my teammate (UW Humans) was up against Kibler’s Wolf Run deck. Opponent had Galvanic Blast in hand and used it main phase to kill a 1/1 Champion of the Parish my teammate saw the opportunity at this point and on his turn played Mirran Crusader equipped Swiftfoot Boots and next turn played Angelic Destiny for the win. Game 2 the opponent made the same mistake and my teammate beat him 2-0, oh, and this was the 7th round!

Well I think you’ve probably heard enough story telling so I will get to the point. I want to do Wolf Run but I am adding my own spice to it using cards that I feel are under valued. Here are some of the cards I want to attempt:

Mondronen Shaman  Flip: I seriously cannot believe this card is not seeing more play. This card if flipped makes your opponent lose a minimum of 2 life and ITS NOT LEGENDARY so yes they stack heavily. Perhaps in a Heartless Summoning BR Control? Maybe Wolf Run to lower your opponents life total to make your Kessig Wolf Run easier to win with?

Urabrask the Hidden: This card is good and seeing some love in GR Aggro but the ability to slow down opposing aggro and speed up your win condition makes this card more powerful than I think people give credit for. At some point late game Wolf Run or GR will begin to top deck and with this guy on the field any threat immediately has to be dealt with or your opponent will lose. Also having this out and playing Primeval Titan to get 2 lands and attacking to grab another 2 and doing X damage is priceless.

Jade Mage: Granted I know this one is a stretch but being able to create more blockers/attackers at the end of turn could be pretty big and with Wolf Run your making at least 2 after turn 4. So its…possible?

Liege of the Tangle: He saw a little bit of play in Valakut variants and when he hit it was game over…unless your opponent had a Day of Judgment that’s where the skilled players however didn’t choose EVERY land they own. Again a possible card but no more than a one of after all Avenger of Zendikar rotated ):

That being said there is also a card not seeing play right now against Wolf Run that would give it serious trouble. It was a pain to deal with in Valakut and I imagine Tunnel Ignus should have a relatively same effect against wolf run.

My deck is still under construction as of right now and I am trying to figure out where I can squeeze in metagame but for now I am still on the drawing board.

As always leave your comments, thoughts, opinions below. I will give honest opinions on decks if you post a link below.

Most Wolf Run players swear by the 1-2-4-6 mantra. They want land drops and acceleration to get them into casting titans on turn 4. Spells that cost 3 have a lesser value. While spells that cost five has some value, in the event that a ramp spell is countered, those are also less highly prized.

Still, I like the idea of fiddling with established archetypes and going rogue-ish. That's why I built Tree Thugger.

How about an addition of Birthing PodMTG Card: Birthing Pod Gives you similar tutoring ability to Green sun's while still making room to have actual green sun's in the deck. I've been toying with having two separate chains with birthing pod rather than running 1 solid chain. Check out my idea for the deck, it hasn't been sleeved up yet or playtested but in theory I think it should work. Born to Run

Do you think that would fit well into a Grixis control deck? I've been toying with the idea lately, with 3 to 4 copies of it being complimented by a few Consecrated SphinxMTG Card: Consecrated Sphinxs, Snapcaster MageMTG Card: Snapcaster Mages, and a normal Grixis spread of removal?

Geekachu I think it could.

I toyed with the idea before as well as a RW Life gain deck that used 4 and 4 ManabarbsMTG Card: Manabarbs

That was my take on the idea of B/R control with , it's definitely rough but I think it really can become a playable deck with Painful QuandaryMTG Card: Painful Quandary. Do you have any opinions? Do you think it would be better off as a Heartless SummoningMTG Card: Heartless Summoning variant?
