CatalogMTG Card: Catalog or Veil of BirdsMTG Card: Veil of Birds seem like the strongest picks for us. I'm going to give the edge to the birds, a 1/1 flyer for 1 seems really strong, and all your opponent has to do is cast one spell. Doesn't seem like a condition that is impossible to fulfill. We need to take some creatures at some point.

I'd have to pick CatalogMTG Card: Catalog or ExhumeMTG Card: Exhume. ExhumeMTG Card: Exhume is amazing, but we need to get some power creatures if we want to make use of it. Otherwise it's just too risky.

Without a reliable way to put creatures in the graveyard and the bombs to go with it, playing ExhumeMTG Card: Exhume represents as much of a risk as a reward. I love the card to death, but it's not much for limited I fear.

I would probably take CatalogMTG Card: Catalog at this point.

March 8, 2012 4:18 p.m.

The best card seems to be SymbiosisMTG Card: Symbiosis. As combat tricks go it's a good one. But this leads us to the problem of it being the fourth colour, and really we should probably draw a line there.

CatalogMTG Card: Catalog because card accel that's not too costly is always relevant.

Veil of BirdsMTG Card: Veil of Birds. Thus far it fits our curve better and could allow us to get some early damage in/draw out some early removal.

March 8, 2012 5:23 p.m.

SymbiosisMTG Card: Symbiosis is good enough I'm tempted to take it even as a hate pick.

I like CatalogMTG Card: Catalog, but I'm not sure what we're filtering. Strictly speaking, it's not card advantage. It might help us out of a color screw problem. It may help us find answers, but at a cost of 3cc it may be tough to cast that answer if we find it. Compelling, but I'm not sold.

I can be swayed, but I'm voting Veil of BirdsMTG Card: Veil of Birds, It will be nice in the early game and serves as cheap sac fodder for our black beater.

March 8, 2012 9:17 p.m.

They're both definately good. My reasoning is thus: Veil of BirdsMTG Card: Veil of Birds is a good early play but at the end of the day it's still a 1/1. I don't consider it to be a very threatening card, all it has going for it is evasion.

CatalogMTG Card: Catalog however allows us to draw two cards, increasing our draws over our opponant, at the cost of discarding one card from our hand, not even one of the two we just drew (unless our hand is empty). It's instant so we can easily do it at the end of their turn. In my opinion it's like an upgraded Faithless LootingMTG Card: Faithless Looting. You pay two more and only have to discard one card.

I won't be too upset if we go veil (and I am painfully aware that we're on a grand total of two creatures thus far) but I just think CatalogMTG Card: Catalog is the better choice.

March 8, 2012 9:42 p.m.

My pick is still CatalogMTG Card: Catalog but I would be happy enough with the Veil of BirdsMTG Card: Veil of Birds if it gets chosen.

I really want to choose some off the wall card here, but CatalogMTG Card: Catalog or ExhumeMTG Card: Exhume would be the best choices. If we could have both, then we'd have ourselves a combo going. As it is, we have no reliable way to get a creature in the graveyard (nor any creatures worth doing that to). As it was well said earlier. the 1 mana blue enchantment only becomes a 1/1 flyer and is pretty much a dead card late in the game. Even early in the game it isn't great. With our current direction, we'll want the card advantage over the board advantage.

So I'll go with CatalogMTG Card: Catalog although the hate pick of SymbiosisMTG Card: Symbiosis would be a reasonable decision as well. Two creatures get a +2/+2 bonus. It's basically a titanic growth spread across two creatures.

I'm going to argue for CatalogMTG Card: Catalog, and this is why.

Let's say we are in a losing board position. Our opponent will have us dead soon, and we need to find an answer. We draw, and to our despair, it's Veil of BirdsMTG Card: Veil of Birds.

While normally this would be fine, our opponent does not need to cast any spells to beat us.

However, if we had drawn CatalogMTG Card: Catalog, it would allow us to dig for an answer, possible gaining us extra turns and perhaps even coming back into the fight.

Thus, CatalogMTG Card: Catalog gets my vote.

Also, remember we have 8(?) more picks after this one, and two more packs after that. We have plenty of time to pick up creatures.

(I wonder if we could get an "Edit" button for posts, that way we don't need to double-post if we have a thought afterward...)

Let's go with CatalogMTG Card: Catalog.

Veil of BirdsMTG Card: Veil of Birds is quite good, but not for the deck we're building here... And we aren't worried about it; finally a target for SickenMTG Card: Sicken!

+1 CatalogMTG Card: Catalog:

Could potentially get even deeper into the deck if we draw a card with Cycling and we're really searching for an answer.

It also gives us card selection, which gives us choices, which gives us decisions, which win games.

I'd rather be searching for an answer and swinging for 1.

Curfew or Exhume. Exhume opens up a whole plan B for us if we pick a stupid fatty later on. Curfew is great in blue black, though -- in some cases it will let us blink spire owl to re-filter cards, in some caes it will be strategic removal; regardless, giving us access to a second round of our best ETB effect is good. My vote is CurfewMTG Card: Curfew. Otherwise we should take Exhume and hope that catalog tables.

CatalogMTG Card: Catalog is a nice solid card.

March 10, 2012 3:15 p.m.

going w/ the Veil of BirdsMTG Card: Veil of Birds we have so few creatures i just can't vote for the draw spell... but it would be my second choice.

March 12, 2012 5:08 p.m.

jkarnes says... #20

Veil of BirdsMTG Card: Veil of Birds is not a creature... it's a quasi-creature.

I have seen very few 1-2 drop aggressors that the Veil of Birds could out-race (or kill) ergo the reason for my CatalogMTG Card: Catalog vote. The 1/1 bird is at best a blocker. It will never race.

March 12, 2012 5:32 p.m.

we seem to have stalled out here... Shoots up signal flares in KC's direction hoping that he brings us a new pack.

Yeah, give me a bit. It takes a bit of time to bring you a new pack and I am pretty slammed just at the moment. Probably later today.
