OK, so we had a record number of entries this time around. Over a hundred cards were submitted and the design team had to narrow it down from there. Here are the finalists.
Voting Rules
- Each player should vote for their favorite cards below. Vote for one white creature card and one white noncreature card. You may vote for cards by users or design team members.
- Each player should provide feedback on the cards for which they voted, such as possible changes.
- Each player may provide feedback on any of the other cards that are presented as well. Just be clear on what cards you are voting for and which ones you are simply commenting on.
- Design team members will not be voting, so if you do not like their designs and you all vote for something else, we will not win (which is fine).
To help with your decisions, this link will give you some background about Morglen:

Alright, here we go. Take a look at these card designs and vote for your favorites.
New Lawkeeper by CastawayJ
Design team comments: One member of design team indicated that the CMC should get a slight increase. Also the card will clearly need creature type. llikely some kind of Elf.
Quick-Shield Druid by Failure / Comply
Design team comments: May need an increased cost.
Zyanth'l's Minions by zandl
Design team comments: We all really liked this, but due to the reusable aspect of this card, we may need to increase the activation cost of the second ability.
Ancient Grudge-Bearer by nightscape
Design team comments: one member of the design team felt that lifelink might be too much on this card.
Witness to All by Dritz | |
Design team comments: The design team had no suggested changes. |
Gladeparter Midwife by squire1
Seer of True Selves by mistergreen527
The Meek by $ªmHεiπ | |
Anthem by CastawayJ | |
Design team comments: We felt that the cost should be 1W. Also a more descriptive or flavorful name might be good.
Grieving Period by millsn
Design team comments: We liked this as is. One team member commented that it was like a reversed Intruder Alarm
Tainted Bonds by Emrakool
Design team comments: The design team had no suggested changes.
Dasvol's Purification by landot
Design team comments: We couldn't decide over leaving the CMC or making it 1W.
Redemption by IronHead
Design team comments: The design team had no suggested changes. |
Stand of the Pure by squire1
Lay to Rest by mistergreen527
The Meek Inherit by $ªmHεiπ
All votes must be submitted in the comments below by midnight EST on Tuesday, June 5th, 2012.
Zynath'l's Minions is my vote for a creature. I agree that the activation cost of the second ability may be a bit low, but are there really that many things you can do with creatures that are in the graveyard in this set thus far?
Nonetheless, the more I read it, it does seem to be a bit under-priced for the utility it has. Perhaps make the first activated ability cost WG, T and make the second one WB, T? I wanted to keep the costs even when I made this card.
And paying just G and tapping a 1/1 to put a basic into play tapped seems a bit under-priced, as well. So I suggest the costs be raised for both.
Dasvol's Purification is my vote for a non-creature spell. I think the cost is perfect at 2W. Otherwise, it would be strictly better than Disenchant . I'm not sure whether the point is to compare these cards to existing ones, but I feel like 1W would simply be too good for every format and this set. This card's going to be doing work against almost every deck that could be made with this set anyways. I feel like this set will play like a Limited format and killing tokens in a set heavy with tokens will be good.

Creature: Zyanth'l's Minion with the second ability costing 1BNoncreature: Tainted Bonds, although the second ability should be "2B, return Tainted Bonds to its owner's hand: Enchanted creature gets -4/-4 until end of turn"

Seers of True Selves and Stand of the Pure. I am curious as to why there were no cards chosen with the Memento power referenced since that is the main Power of this set?
May 31, 2012 4:52 p.m.
In the voting instructions, I think you mean 'white' instead of 'black'. :p
that said, many of these cards seem over-powered for uncommons.
I think the best creature for the set is gladeparter midwife, and the best non-creature card is redemption -- it's limited playable, and it feels really white-elfy, which is something I think this set has struggled with a little.
Tainted bond seems both a little overpowered and really boring to play against, or with. one card board lockdown is silly.
Names: 'The Meek Inherit' bugs my inner English Major. maybe 'Meek Inheritance?' 'Inheritance of the Meek?'
As for Anthem: how about 'Inspired Elegy' or 'Hymn of Rememberance'?
Anyhow. interesting cards, all in all. my votes are Gladeparter Midwife and Redemption. rare that I don't vote for my own design, but redemption is better.

Creature Vote: Seer of True Selves.
Non-creature Vote: Redemption.
comments: my 2nd creature choice would be Witness to All because it seems really good and flavorful, I just didn't vote for it because of its simpleness compared to the others.
Zyanthi'l's Minnions I like as a rare. that's just the immediate vibe I get from it. at least a more expensive second ability.
Lastly, I'll be the devil's advocate and say that tainted bonds is too good. I don't exactly know how you'd change it, just thought I'd throw that out there.

Creature Vote: Zyanth'l's Minions
Non-Creature Vote: Tainted Bond
Comments: I'm not sure The Meek Inherit works as you want it to. It creates an infinite loop with a creature of 1 power. Creature has 1 power, gains +1 power, then has 2 power, so loses the +1 power. It doesn't work nicely. You could change it to be whenever a creature dies or something similar (which goes with the name a bit better) or a beginning of each upkeep trigger lasting until end of turn.

Gladepart Midwife currently triggers her own ability. I'm not sure if that's intentional.
Tainted Bonds seems ridiculously overpowered. It's repeatable kill and, with enough mana, will 2 for 1 your opponent even if they have enchant hate. Seems especially good in limited.
@Teamfire The Meek Inherit cards only looks at power during resolution.
Creature Vote: Zyanth'l's Minions
Non-Creature Vote: Tainted Bond
June 1, 2012 12:47 a.m.
Voting for Gladeparter Midwife. The ability is currently worded pretty badly though; the wording should probably be something like: Whenever another Elf enters the battlefield under your control, gain 1 life and put a +1/+1 counter on it.ORGain a life whenever another creature enters the battlefield under your control. If that creature is an elf, put a +1/+1 counter on it.
Also, I think people have already gone over this, but this set has -1/-1 & +1/+1 counters.
For non-creature, I vote for Stand of the Pure. It seems like an excellent limited combat trick. Tainted Bonds is also quite cool, but currently very overpowered.
June 1, 2012 10:32 a.m.
My creature vote is for Quick-Shield Druid at the same cost or 3W.
Non-creature I vote for Dasvol's Purification.

I really enjoy Anthem, maybe rename it something along the lines of Ancestor's Honor? or possibly Reverent Anthem? Defiantly a 1W anthem in the spirit of Honor of the Pure and Intangible Virtue . Two thumbs up

pffft this is rigged, not to mention most of these cards have no variety. I vote for New Lawkeeper the way it is. IF ANY change needed simply make the cost the same as a common in the past that did the same thing card:Gideon's Lawkeeper Stun Sniper Whipcorder honestly pick the cards that havent already been made =/
June 3, 2012 6:43 p.m.
Not sure if serious....
All of these cards have terrific variety and most of them have abilities that have never been printed before. But in a set that's entirely composed of made-up cards, you'll want some cards to have old abilities of tried-and-true real-life cards, like card:Gideon's Lawkeeper and Whipcorder , for stabilization.
June 3, 2012 6:51 p.m.
Oh, I just realized that Zyanth'l's Minions' first ability reminds me a lot of Walking Atlas except for the basic land restriction.
June 3, 2012 6:59 p.m.
ravengamer93 says... #20
Exactly my point Dritz, i saw some amazing ideas on that list and the ones that were picked were already moldy old and overly used up abilities. name one and i'll find 3 commons that do the same for less.

Find me any card that has both of those abilities and I'll eat my hat.
Read the Planeswalker card for this Community Set. It was designed to give the Walker more synergy in games.

Diligent Farmhand it's not exact but not only will it put him in the GY for further use and he gets you a land.
I'll admit it's not the same exactly but hey i never meant to say EVERY card here was moldy old.
also Avenging Druid will also do the exact same thing as Zyanth'l's Minions given the right circumstance.
June 3, 2012 7:51 p.m.
We're not putting this set up against real cards. You know that, right? So nothing you're saying means anything, really. If we make an 8/8 for 3GGG, there's no point in running in and screaming "Terra Stomper IS BETTER!"

I'm not trying to prove whats better, I just want you guys to create cards that are original while also fitting the set. and pssshh screw bothe those i'm running Godsire ;)
June 3, 2012 8 p.m.
... But you just proved that Zyanth'l's Minions is original. You could argue that every card that comes out nowadays has elements of something else from before it, but that's what happens when there are over 10,000 cards in the game. It's pointless to even make that point.
And it's not like any of these are even straight copies of other things.
June 3, 2012 8:06 p.m.
Hey guys. So I'm not sure I see the problem.
Let me clear some things up.
We are making a set that is meant to play with other sets.
We are also assuming that some costs will be adjusted and rarities may be adjusted during playtesting.
While we do want original cards, we also want cards that fit WOTC convention
Many cards that are designed were great designs and just did not fit in the shard flavor wise.
Our design team is diverse and we have Timmy spike and Johnny all up in it.
If you would like to clarify what is rigged about it I am all ears. Not sure what you mean.

That part of the post was me trolling mad, even if my card was bestcough
I'm sure our debate should be deleted so that way you can just look at votes and not my troubles.
June 3, 2012 8:27 p.m.
Oh ok cool. Nah I'll leave it up it's no big deal I track the votes daily so I am all caught up. Not sure which cards you designed. We usually get a lot of good ones. Like with most challenges. We usually have more than we need that are tied for unanimous votes from the design team. Then we have to get really nitpicky. So one of yours may have gotten a lot of love by design team members but it just doesn't make it thought the gamut.

My creature vote goes for Zyanth'l's Minions love the abilities, the first ability seems well priced as of the restriction of it entering the battlefield tapped and it has to be a basic land. As for the second ability, I think 1B or WB seems good for its activation cost.,
As for the non-creature vote, I have to go with Tainted Bonds it just too good and fun to play with, lockdown and kill all in one.
June 4, 2012 4:54 p.m.
squire1 their argument the reason for a number of the votes is demonstrating one problem with a set designed by a community as focused as Tapped Outs. A vast majority of players here are spikes first and foremost, in fact I would be willing to say that the majority of players here are strictly spikes and care very little about the mindset of the other two (three if you count vorthos, four if you count vorthos and melvin) player types and unlike Wizards, aren't interested in making sure there are cards in each set that apply to all player types. Most members here are voting strictly on what they would play in a competitive environment and nothing else. Its something the design teams will need to address.
Wizards develops cards for all player types in all formats. Some cards are good strictly in limited. Others are clearly designed just to be good in tournaments. Others still are meant to appeal to the casual, table top crowd (most actually appeal to this crowd as they make up the majority), some are meant to fill in the archtypes (every set will have a cheap green pump spell, ect) and others are meant to be flavorfull and nothing else (those over costed vanilla creatures with a long paragraph of flavor text). If this is to look like a real set it will need to contain all these things. Not just a bunch of cards designed to be played in tournaments.
June 5, 2012 10:18 a.m.
oh agreed. Vanilla and french vanilla creatures are massive staples that we like to see people submit and often vote for. We will also make some of these in common.
While I agree the voting by the community may be skewed. i design team is less so. We have most player personalities represented.
So that means that each shard may have a different leaning in the commons.
June 5, 2012 10:54 a.m.
I don't think T/O is mostly spikes. Have you ever seen the front-page decks? There's always some janky shit there, my own decks included.
If anything, I'm a Timmy.
But as squire1 has said, the commons are being designed by large design teams and the requirements for any respectable Magic set will be filled out.

I would have to agree there is lots of different people here on tappout that I have seen. I feel there is good combination on the site. Like zandl said, I also always see a good randomization of different deck themes, of course there is going to be the typical types running around that wins, people like it, copy it, tweak it, cause of course people like to win and its fun to win. But there is always someone who does something out of the box and it works, which I love to see. Its like when I saw a Miracle deck win I was very pleased, because he did something different then Delver, Wolf Run, Frites and etc but thats my general opinion :-)
I am personally a Johnny, I love variety and winning the way I want to win and love building decks around random cards, hey it may not win, but I love the challenge of trying something.
But anyways like all voting, the statistical results can be skewed because the population may have a skewed opinion, that is why random votes and getting as much people to vote is always the best but not always possible, So everyone just has to work with what they have gained and try to flesh out for the other personality archtypes and also to make a good set that grooves with others.
Just my 2 cents anyways.

Ye, when infect first came out i wanted to be the original guy in standard, so while 3/4 were running w/u control ,1/4 running g/b infect, i decided to run a r/b/u infect deck and got 3rd place with 2 controllers ahead of me.

Zynath'l's Minions for the creature, and Grieving Period for the non-creature spell.
Zynath'l's Minions definitely needs an increased 2nd ability cost, perhaps a 2B cost.
Grieving Period is perfect as it is.
June 5, 2012 9:55 p.m.
I agree with 2B for Zynath'l's Minions 2nd ability's activation cost.

Seer of the True Selves seems like it should cost at least 1 more considering how powerful that ability to infinitely wall tokens seems like it could be.
Awesome stuff!
