Our last idea for a Tappedout tournament was interrupted by the shutdown of Cockatrice, our planned locale for play. However, some conferencing among Tappedout's senior staff has resulted in a new idea.
The new idea is this:
-
Format: Cube Draft (if you don't know what a Cube is, go here.
-
Cube: Composed of cards selected by the community in a series of articles that I'll promulgate.
-
Program used for play: Magic Online
-
Wait, doesn't that mean I have to pay to play?: No, not necessarily.
-
Well then how do you intend to collect all the cards for the cube?: KICKSTARTER.
-
So I DO have to pay for the cards?: No, you can still play even if you don't contribute. People who do contribute might be given first dibs at playing, depending on the format, but we hope it will be one of those community things where all our users can participate. MTGO accounts are free, after all, it's just the cards that cost money, and if we have a pool of community cards to use in cube drafting, the cost to the player is zero!
-
So how will the people who draft the cards draft them, and then receive them to play with in MTGO?: The drafting will happen via e-mail or chatroom or some other private communication method, with one person coordinating. All the cards will be in the hands of a single Tappedout MTGO account, which will trade the cards to the players at the beginning of the draft, and then retrieve them at the end.
-
Aren't you afraid people will just steal the cards?: Yeah, a little bit. I trust you guys, but I know that we do get occasional bad eggs around here. I'm talking with MTGO about theft prevention and what we can do to get cards back that people abscond with. If you have any ideas on this front, I'd be pleased to hear them.
-
Will there be prizes?: Yes, including actual physical Magic cards if the Kickstarter goes well.
So, before we proceed with this, what do you guys think? Is this a good idea? Something you'd be interested in and perhaps could donate a small amount of money to accomplish? Any ideas to keep people from just stealing the cards?
Let me know, and if you guys like the idea, we'll get it rolling.
It sounds like fun. Could the single TO account be yours(prevent theft)?

What? MTGO is free? Why did I pay 10$ for an account then?
I'd be cool doing this on the alternate Cockatrice server, although it is a little unstab at times. BUT I'd be there with Magic Online as well, although I don't know how much I would/could pay. Format and everything sounds fine.

I'm cool with this. A pauper(ish?) cube could make for a decent first attempt at rolling out bugs.

MTGO accounts cost $9.99 to activate (at least, that's what it says for me)

You can still use Cockatrice, just not the main server.

Promulgate.
Seriously I almost want to participate simply because this word was used in the description.

If MTGO costs $ to activate an account, then create just a few shareable accounts for the tappedout tournament (if that's possible).
When the tournament is over, sell the cards to recoup some of the fees and use the $ to buy prizes or to fund future tappedout projects.

You guys could try using OCTGN...it takes a little leg work to get going but it has functionality that's leaps and bounds over cockatrice. I can help as much as i can with it!

Why is this not on Cockatrice, exactly?
Cockatrice is free and easier to use and get.

Wait, when did the $10 thing happen? Frig. Well, @keilahmartin's suggestion works fine, in any case.

guys what about using "virtual playtable " ? ive been using it for a while and so far so good. the interface is similar to the old mtg workstation. i hope you dont do this tournament with the virtual playtable cause it mea s that wotc will shut it down in half a year or so jajaja

That's kind of what I'm worried about re: using alternate Cockatrice servers and what not. Don't want to get into this and have Hasbro shut down the thing we're using.

I believe that using Cockatrice is more viable. Many people, including myself, would be turned off by MTGO. And 10 bucks.
However, let's NOT get TappedOut in trouble. Further discussion should be held on some other platform or domain, I think, just to be safe.

Oooh, octgn's actually usable now? Awesome! I first tried it out back in the day, but it wasn't done or something like that.

Yeah, it works out fine. You just have to install the sets and game definitions, it isn't that hard.
April 11, 2013 11:32 p.m.
Why not just use LackeyCCG? It's free, and in my opinion it's better than Cockatrice was.

We can use OCTGN for this, but Cockatrice is still viable on woogerworks. I don't think using MTGO will be a very well-received format, and I think the risk of having cards stolen is way too high. Maybe we can still make use of Kickstarter for prizes?
April 13, 2013 1:23 a.m.
i tried out today OCTGN and its very good, but i still think that u guys should try the virtual playtable. Its easier to install and easier to build the decks. The interface its better in OCTGN but the virtual playtable has everything needed.

Cobthecobbler says... #24
Actually OCTGN is completely easier to make decks. Requires no work at all. Google "OCTGN Deck converter" and you can convert any TappedOut exported deck file to OCTGN format in seconds.
I use OCTGN all the time, and I would honestly be all for the tournament being hosted on that.

I would be interested in playing some sort of cube if it fit in my schedule. Though I would rather play on a free server than on MTGO. The logistics of MTGO seem iffy to most people here.

Cockatrice still exists, yall, if ya still wanna use it.
