Let the games begin!

At the time of the submission deadline, I accepted 81 decks into the Spring 2013 Standard Pauper Challenge. That’s 4860 individual cards! This leads me to...

... some interesting statistics!

If you’re at all like myself, you’ll appreciate the following numbers and trends. All of these numbers were pulled from a giant list I made that has all of the cards accepted included in it, found here: Spring 2013 Pauper Challenge Card-List

Out of 81 decks, here are the top 5 cards for each card-type:

Top 5 Creatures
63 Basilica Screecher
56 Syndic of Tithes
42 Kingpin's Pet
41 Doomed Traveler
36 Delver of Secrets  Flip
Top 5 Sorceries
49 Pillar of Flame
39 Sign in Blood
36 Mugging
19 Hands of Binding
12 Artful Dodge / 12 Duress
Top 5 Instants
85 Searing Spear
77 Murder
39 Tragic Slip
38 Giant Growth
34 Think Twice
Top 5 Enchantments
74 Madcap Skills
58 Ethereal Armor
42 Pacifism
38 Stab Wound
25 Volcanic Strength

There were only 28 total artifacts, lands don’t really count, and if you find a common Planeswalker, let me know. Here is a list that shows the number of mana symbols for each color, indicating a rough translation of each color’s prevalence in the challenge:

Color pie!
852 Black symbols / 25.46%
762 White symbols / 22.77%
756 Red symbols / 22.59%
556 Green symbols / 16.61%
421 Blue symbols / 12.58%

Below is the mana-curve of the deck, displaying the number of cards by mana-cost:

Mana-curve!
(1) = 861
(2) = 1307
(3) = 613
(4) = 242
(5) = 64
(6) = 12
(7) = 1

And, now. It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for.

Prizes!

While KrazyCaley wanted prizes to be allotted to the top 10% of players, I wanted prizes allotted to the top 8 players. It just so happens, however, that these are the same. Out of 81 players, the top 8 players will receive a Feature Token prize as well as a deck analysis by moi.

Hang tight!

That’s all I have for you now. Look for the first results article by next weekend. Games have already begun and I’m nearly a quarter of the way complete.

I love that you’re all excited for this challenge! It’s giving me the faith that we might be able to do another over the summer, after Dragon’s Maze is released and settled into Standard.

zandl says... #11

Ah, crap. I forgot that I need to use the HTML code for apostrophes instead of just typing the key. Rest assured; I know my grammar.

Games still underway. I'm honestly being a bit surprised by some of the results, but I'm not going to give anything away just yet.

Be patient and have good TappedOuting!

April 22, 2013 4:42 a.m.

RussischerZar says... #18

Speaking of Caley... didn't he submit a deck as well?

Or was that "disqualified" since he's from staff?

Anyway, I think I'll lose my round one. :D
My deck is too specific

April 22, 2013 5:03 a.m.

Goody says... #19

zandl, I believe KrazyCaley's deck was Izzet Love That I'm Feeling. He posted it somewhere.

April 22, 2013 10:32 a.m.

IAmKingTony says... #20

I forgot to submit my deck, oops. You ended up with an odd number too >_<

April 22, 2013 10:57 a.m.

sewellius says... #21

Caley's deck was posted on the tournament post, but not the submission page. I'm not sure if he did that on purpose or misread the submission rules.

April 22, 2013 11:08 a.m.

sewellius says... #22

Good luck to everyone! I'm excited to hear some of the highlights of the tournament.

April 22, 2013 11:27 a.m.

Branigan says... #23

Wow tough break... I spent time making my deck and I submitted it as private.

April 22, 2013 11:57 a.m.

Nigrescence says... #24

My deck wasn't very good anyway. I'll just be glad if it gets past round one.

April 22, 2013 12:25 p.m.

naafyren88 says... #25

Aaaaand I'm screwed....

April 22, 2013 12:35 p.m.

GureiSeion says... #26

Ick, the Hexproof matchup. Not going to be an easy one. :|

April 22, 2013 1:30 p.m.

KrazyCaley says... #27

Eh, doesn't matter. I am self-disqualified for prizes anyway, but probably best for me to avoid having a deck in the challenge in any case.

April 22, 2013 2:33 p.m.

sewellius says... #28

@GureiSeion, With all the rampant removal everyone seems to have, I'm guessing (and hoping) that Hexproof will be a strong mechanic in this tournament.

April 22, 2013 2:52 p.m.

jkarnes says... #29

I just went for an infinite combo. Nice to get the Agro matchup first.

April 22, 2013 4:15 p.m.

Goody says... #30

I put in a couple copies of Devour Flesh precisely to fight hexproof. You don't wanna mess with hexproof.

April 22, 2013 5:23 p.m.

I went for the good ole "Turn your guys sideways" approach. Ethereal Armor is killing me in my test plays D:

April 22, 2013 5:50 p.m.

zandl says... #32

Thus far, I see most people's removal spells in the forms of Smite , Executioner's Swing , and burn. These are all good, but situational. What's wrong with Murder or Devour Flesh ? Some games have been won so far on the back of a single beat-stick pimped out with Ethereal Armor and friends.

I'll go more deeply into these types of trends in my next article.

April 22, 2013 6:25 p.m.

I've found that slapping a Martial Glory and a Dynacharge on a Trained Caracal really increases my odds of not dying.

April 22, 2013 6:28 p.m.

tempest says... #34

unless it dies before dealing damage. heheheh

April 22, 2013 6:33 p.m.

You fiend! Although that happens a lot with Tragic Slip and Murder ...also Tormented Soul hurts.

April 22, 2013 6:50 p.m.

Fathinar says... #36

i will be happy to get through round 1 it seems like with all the black/white with all the removal and all the life gain im dead in the water. that's at least in my play tests. good luck every one!!

April 22, 2013 7:14 p.m.

Ohthenoises says... #37

I really like boros enchantments. Last Pauper challenge zandl hosted Volcanic Strength came through as a huge allstar. So I took that concept and added to it with Ethereal Armor and Madcap Skills relying on Bonds of Faith , Mugging , and Pillar of Flame for removal.

One "combo" I'm proud of is Unruly Mob + Thatcher Revolt . IDK how it's working in the tournament but it's very strong in playtesting.

April 22, 2013 7:15 p.m.

tempest says... #38

thanks i'll need it. i'll tell you a secret, zandl told me that i made it through the first round. phew!

April 22, 2013 7:16 p.m.

Blakkhand says... #39

Yeah, Boros Enchantments is the one match-up my selesnya deck is afraid of. I just pray for Pacifism , or it is generally a loss.

April 22, 2013 7:18 p.m.

sewellius says... #40

I'm pretty happy with all the spot removal black has, having chosen Golgari. I'm more concerned about blue counterspells than anythign else.

April 22, 2013 7:23 p.m.

piedok says... #41

im happy if my deck makes it past round one. i expect it do die

April 22, 2013 7:24 p.m.

I am hoping my slightly different take on Hexproof (B/G instead of W/G) will offer me some options that the deck is usually lacking. Specifically lots of other creatures I won't mind sacking to devour flesh with scavenge and such.

Im just curious to see how it does I don't have a large playgroup to test with around me.

April 23, 2013 5:36 p.m.

TridenT says... #43

I haven't even looked at decks yet, I just know that AlexOAwesome is one smart cookie and I may be in big trouble.

April 23, 2013 6:06 p.m.

sewellius says... #44

@LittleBlueHero, I think we both had a similar idea when constructing decks. We seem to be the only B/G Hexproof decks in the mix that I have seen. Of course, you went heavy on scavenge where I dipped into regenerate and deathtouch. I think we'll get somewhat similar results, though.

April 23, 2013 6:51 p.m.

Dallie says... #45

Dimir control looks like it's mixing the most used and the less used colors. I just hope mine is tweaked enough to be able to keep up and get the right answers on time.

April 24, 2013 2:07 a.m.

@sewellius

Yeah I wasn't noticing a lot of others with our game plan. Perhaps B/G Hexproof could become the sleeper deck?

Fingers crossed.

April 24, 2013 11:48 a.m.

I just realized my deck is using ZERO of the most common creatures, ONE of the Sorceries, One of the Instants, ZERO of the enchantments.

Yay for going rogue :)

April 25, 2013 2:32 p.m.

I do believe my deck uses exactly zero of the most common cards, and is also playing the two least common colors. I count that as a win.

April 26, 2013 7:31 p.m.

HOBONOMO says... #49

So where are we in the rounds?
