You unlock this door with the key of creativity. Beyond it is another dimension. A dimension of combos, a dimension of chaos, a dimension of the cards. You're moving into a land of both victory and fun things and ideas. You just crossed over into... The Kitchen Table

With this casual series, I will be taking an idea, whether it be a combo or theme, and making 2 to 3 decks out of that idea. This will hopefully draw in more, newer players and possibly give you new deck ideas. So, what're we waiting for? Let's do it!!

I seem to be getting requests for Manabarbs decks lately. Manabarbs is a very difficult card to build around, but this is the dimension of combos, chaos and of the cards, so I will attempt some good Manabarbs decks. Before we begin, there are some things to remember about this dirt cheap piece of cardboard.

  1. It only works when a player taps a land for mana. Eye of Ugin would not count.

  2. It affects both players, so you aren't off scott-free either.

So, with that in mind, let's build ourselves jank Manabarbs decks!!

Alrighty, for the first deck, it uses Manabarbs + Personal Sanctuary. With this evil combo, you take absolutely no damage from the barbs, but your opponent sure does!! The main strategy is to discard all of your key enchantments and bring them back with Replenish. Faithless Looting, Firestorm and Gamble can all put cards into your graveyard. Burning Wish can look for Replenish or Faithless Looting, and Enlightened Tutor can get the key enchantments. Overall, it is a Boros-tinted enchantment deck with attitude. Here it is.

Personal Barbs

Land

4x Battlefield Forge

4x Gemstone Mine

6x Mountain

6x Plains

4x Sacred Foundryfoil

Other Spells

4x Enlightened Tutor

4x Firestorm

4x Ghostly Prison

4x Manabarbs

4x Personal Sanctuary

4x Burning Wish

4x Faithless Looting

4x Gamble

4x Replenish

Sideboard

2x Faithless Looting

2x Gamble

2x Replenish

Next, we're gonna visit the zoo! Look, see the elephant? How about that Pygmy Hippo? That'll play nice next to the barbed wire. Let's use it! If we can pull off those two on turn 3 or 4, then we'll be in fine business! With those two out on the field, that gives our opponents an ultimatum, either get bled to death by playing the game, or get bled to death and "kindly re-gift" the mana to us. Not much of a choice. But, since we are playing U/R/G, we need a way to make the hippo unblockable, so it can always waste the remaining mana our opponent didn't use. How about Goblin Tunneler? Good, and let's toss in some Artful Dodge for good measure. So, what to do with the extra mana floating about after our opponent "kindly re-gifted"? We waste it by casting and sinking it into Sands of Delirium. Fill the rest with ramp, search and draw, and we have ourselves a winner, folks!

Barbed Hippo

Land

4x Breeding Poolfoil

4x Forest

4x Gemstone Mine

4x Island

4x Mountain

4x Stomping Groundfoil

Creatures

4x Birds of Paradise

4x Goblin Tunneler

4x Pygmy Hippo

3x Artful Dodge

4x Gamble

4x Ponder

4x Sylvan Scrying

1x Brainstorm

3x Sands of Delirium

What happened to Episode 2, Pt.2 where I assume Winter Orb would've been.

Wouldn't Farseek be better than Sylvan Scrying in the second deck?

Manabarbs ... Love it! But where's Drain Power ? Mana Short ?

Oh! If you do Winter Orb , check out my Flare, imprison, and burn... Not only do you get fun with the Winter Orb but you also get to play with Mana Flare too!!!

Episode 2 will be in the very near future. I just wanted to get Manabarbs out of the way.

Jarrheadd0

Yes, it would. Farseek just slipped my mind. The deck in the link has been changed.

Goody

That sounds fun! I will plan to do an episode on plants. Thanks!!

buffy

Yea, I know! It's only $0.45, almost too good to be true!

I decided to not use Drain Power or Mana Short because the first deck was off color and for the second, I was trying to go for a Pygmy Hippo combo deck, and the drain/short wouldn't quite fit. Looked at the Flare, imprison, and burn... deck and it is freakin awesome!! I will do a another big Winter Orb /lock decks episode in the very near future.

Manabarbs is my favorite card in existence. I have roughly 4 decks devoted to the monstrosity of a card. Tamanoa makes for awesome games too, since you get healed for your mana, which equals out to 0 life loss, and you heal for their mana too. run some defender ramp with Axebane Guardian and Perimeter Captain ( maybe a couple AEther Membrane s just to have them recast those difficult creatures) and you might not even need the Runed Halo or Personal Sanctuary . Great fun in casual. Cards get scooped and heads roll in multiplayer. Of course you get this massive target on your head, but Ghostly Prison and Windborn Muse keep them from getting too ambitious.

Soul's Attendant + Soul Warden + Darien, King of Kjeldor + Manabarbs works too.

Tap 4-5 lands to cast a spell you get 4-5 soldiers and 10 life not including whatever you are casting.

Those combos look incredibly brutal in Manabarbs decks. I'm now strongly considering a Manabarbs deck due to all the feedback and how much fun this episode was.

I don't know if you have an idea lined up or not, but if you don't then here is one of mine:

I am trying to build a deck based off the Cytoplast Manipulator (or even its brother the Simic Manipulator . I was wondering how you would go about it.

April 5, 2013 noon

Apoptosis says... #12

@obitus G/U, B/U, or G/U/B scavenge/evolve deck. You put scavenge counters onto either manipulator to then gain control of their creature (e.g. Slitherhead . Use Simic Fluxmage with scavenge/evolve to move the +1/+1 counters to their creatures, so that you can then steal them with the manipulator. Since you are blue, use counterspell magic to prevent board wipes like Terminus or direct damage kill spells, for Supreme Verdict if you go G/U/B you have Golgari Charm to keep your guys alive. Card sets predating Innistrad I don't know, but I hope this helps. Good luck! -Apop.

I never thought about scavenge mixed with simic, I will have to try that one out. Its hard deck to do, in my opinion. I will go look up some of your ideas, thanks for the input Apoptosis.

obitus

I actually am planning on a Simic episode with things like Master Biomancer and I will do a deck on your idea. Thanks for the input!

mtg_deckmaster

Excellent!!! I have a deck already based off the Cytoplast Manipulator and Simic Manipulator . I don't think the deck is very good, but its the best I could come up with

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/tip-mim-can-steal-you-plastic/

I got ramp and the mechanic set up decently, but I fill the deck just won't work well unless it plays certain types of other decks. I look forward to reading your article, I wonder what others ways you can break the Master Biomancer

Not to be THAT guy... But am I missing the newest episode? Or did this AMAZING series get canceled like Firefly, in the prime of its glory?

May 14, 2013 9:15 p.m.

Or like alphas, ending with a "next time on..." and then there was no next time...

May 15, 2013 11:27 a.m.

Apoptosis says... #19

Jace the Firebrand I refused to watch Alphas after what SyFy did to Stargate Universe and Caprica. SGU and Caprica were shows that were just coming into their own and SyFy left the SGU crew floating in Stasis forever and the cylons to rise to power without a thought. I just started watching Defiance and I can see them killing that in the cradle too. And why hasn't BSG Blood and Chrome been picked up by SyFy yet? Fucking Dumb Bastards... this is why BBC America with Dr. Who and rebroadcasts of BSG kick ass and SyFy is a goddamn joke. Are they still running Wrestling? Yeah that makes sense to be on SyFy.... Grrrr!!!! spits in disgust in the general direction of SyFy and Universal.
