vs.

Game 1

Chryssalid wins the toss and draws first.

Always an interesting choice.

After the second match, I decided that it's better for me to have more cards early.

Caley keeps an opening hand of 2x Plains, Forest, Azorius Arrester, Drudge Beetle, Kraul Warrior, Balustrade Spy.

The usual suspects.

Chryssalid keeps a hand of Simic Guildgate, Island, Forest, Cancel, Seek the Horizon, Haazda Snare Squad, and Tower Drake.

C1

C plays Plains and passes.

R1

R draws Archweaver, plays Simic Guildgate, and passes.

C2

C draws Angelic Skirmisher. He plays Forest for Drudge Beetle and passes.

R2

R draws Island. She plays it and passes.

C3

C draws Guardian of the Gateless. He attacks with Drudge Beetle. (C 20, R 18). He casts Kraul Warrior and passes.

Taking full advantage of being on the play with this hand. Azorius Arrester will power past any blockers, as well.

R3

R draws Swamp, plays Forest, and passes.

C4

C draws Swamp and plays it. He casts Balustrade Spy but it gets Canceled. He attacks with his other creatures and hits. (C 20, R 14).

R4

R draws Island and plays Swamp. She casts Tower Drake and passes.

C5

C draws Putrefy. He casts Azorius Arrester and detains the Drake. He attacks with other creatures and hits. (C 20, R 10).

R5

R draws Forest. She casts Seek the Horizons for 2x Plains and Swamp. She plays Plains.

Four colors, eh? Or could this be the dreaded WUBRG?

C6

C draws Unflinching Courage. He puts it on Kraul Warrior then attacks with everything. R trades Azorius Arrester for Tower Drake and takes the rest. (C 24, R 4).

R6

R draws Selesnya Cluestone and concedes.

Little too slow that time. Against this deck, I should probably play first.

Sideboarding

Neither side makes changes.

Game 2

Chryssalid plays first.

Yeah, thought that might be the case. That was a pretty speedy run by our deck.

Chryssalid keeps a hand of Orzhov Guildgate, Forest, Plains, Frilled Oculus, Cancel, Skyline Predator, Selesnya Cluestone.

I'll risk it.

Caley keeps a hand of Orzhov Guildgate, Plains, 2x Swamp, Concordia Pegasus, Maze Abomination, Angelic Skirmisher.

R1

R plays Orzhov Guildgate.

C1

C draws Guardian of the Gateless and plays Orzhov Guildgate.

R2

R draws Wildwood Rebirth and plays Forest.

C2

C draws Forest, plays it, and casts Concordia Pegasus.

R3

R draws Simic Guildgate, plays it, and passes.

C3

C draws Plains, plays Swamp, and attacks with the Pegasus. (C 20, R 19).

R4

R draws Island, plays it, and passes.

Hello Cancel.

C4

C draws Golgari Guildgate, plays it, and attacks with the Pegasus. (C 20, R 18).

R5

R draws Krasis Incubation, plays Plains, and casts Selesnya Cluestone.

Leaving open double blue.

C5

C draws Unflinching Courage. He plays Plains.

Since I have bombs in hand, good to get rid of the likely counter that's coming with this.

C casts Unflinching Courage on the Pegasus and it gets Canceled. He attacks with the Pegasus. (C 20, R 17).

R6

R draws Forest and plays it.

Nothing else? More counterspells?

C6

C draws Plains and plays it. He attacks with the Pegasus. In response, R flashes down Skyline Predator to block and kill it. Post-combat, C casts Angelic Skirmisher.

R7

R draws Centaur Herald. She casts Krasis Incubation on Skyline Predator, then pulls it back up to make Predator a 5/6.

Now we have a game.

C7

C draws Thrashing Mossdog. He plays Swamp and casts Maze Abomination.

R8

R draws Dimir Cluestone. She casts Centaur Herald, activates it, casts Wildwood Rebirth to get it back, then casts the Herald again.

C8

C draws Unflinching Courage.

I could put this on Maze Abomination, but then it might just get Krasis Incubationed. Maybe best to see if I can get her to put it on something else.

C declares first strike and attacks with Abomination, which hits. (C 20, R 13).

C casts Guardian of the Gateless.

R9

R draws Beck / Call. She casts Dimir Cluestone, then Frilled Oculus.

C9

C draws Selesnya Guildgate and plays it. He attacks declaring First Strike with Maze Abomination and hits. (C 20, R 9). Then he casts Thrashing Mossdog.

R10

R draws Island and plays it. She casts Beck / Call, drawing Seek the Horizon, Swamp, Archweaver, Forest. Then she activates Centaur Herald and draws Battering Krasis.

C10

C draws Plains and plays it. He declares First Strike and attacks with Maze Abomination. R chop blocks with one bird.

Not using Unflinching Courage because it's one-time use - whatever I cast it on gets Krasis Incubation immediately.

R11

R draws Island. She casts Battering Krasis, then Archweaver, evolving Krasis to 3/2.

C11

C draws Ethereal Armor. He declares First Strike and attacks with Maze Abomination. R chop blocks with a bird. He puts Ethereal Armor on Guardian of the Gateless and passes.

Weird. I know he's holding something back.

R12

R draws Azorius Cluestone. She plays swamp and sacrifices Selesnya Cluestone to draw Leyline Phantom. She casts Krasis Incubation on Maze Abomination. Then she sacrifices Dimir Cluestone to draw Tower Drake.

C12

C draws Putrefy and plays Plains. He destroys Skyline Predator with Putrefy. He puts Unflinching Courage on Angelic Skirmisher. Then he declares First Strike and attacks with her. R chops with a bird. (C 26, R 9).

R13

R draws Forest and plays it. She casts Leyline Phantom and Tower Drake, then passes.

C13

C draws Kraul Warrior. He calls First strike and attacks with Angelic Skirmisher. R chops with a bird. (C 32, R 9). C casts Kraul Warrior.

Thank goodness for Guardian of the Gateless.

R14

R draws Forest and plays it. She casts Azorius Cluestone and then Seek the Horizons, finding Plains, Swamp, Island, Island.

C14

C draws Armory Guard. He calls First Strike and attacks with Angelic Skirmisher. R takes it. (C 38, R 3). C casts Armory Guard and passes.

R15

R draws Haazda Snare Squad and plays Plains. She sacrifices Azorius Cluestone and draws Advent of the Wurm. She casts Haazda Snare Squad and passes.

That guy is trouble because he can tap down Guardian of the Gateless.

C15

C draws Stab Wound.

This is interesting. Now she's on the clock.

C declares First Strike and attacks with Angelic Skirmisher. R chops with Tower Drake. C puts Stab Wound on Haazda Snare Squad. End step, R casts Advent of the Wurm.

R16

R bleeds. (C 38, R 1). R draws Putrefy. She does nothing.

C16

C draws Pit Fight. He casts it targeting Angelic Skirmisher and Archweaver, and R concedes.

Had to use the Putrefy to kill the snare squad, now I just lose.

Thoughts

Good match, especially in game 2, where it took some tricky plays and slightly better bombs to get by.

Results

Tappedout def. Chryssalid 2-0

E- "The first game took like 90 seconds. The second game took like 40 minutes. Caley's deck was too fast in the first one, and more powerful in the late, late, late game in the second one."

Ethereal def. C.J. 2-0

"Game 1, CJ had a giant board, but Ethereal had just enough defense to hold him off long enough for a Stab Wound he cast on turn 3 to do basically all the damage needed, plus a little bit of extort. Game 2, Ethereal cast early creatures and CJ didn't, Ethereal did some damage and put Stab Wound on the first creature CJ cast, and he had a flier to finish him off."

Fisher def. Lee 2-0

"Game 1, Lee gets Boros Reckoner out super early but Fisher kills it off with Riot Piker and a bloodrush creature. Then he eventually ran out of gas first in a long fight with lots of dead creatures. Game 2, final score 6-0 in a back and forth attacking race that Lee lost first because of bloodrush."

Niko def. Raynor 2-1

"Game 1, Ral Zarek wins when Raynor gets stalled on four mana. Game 2, Niko couldn't draw blue and Blaze Commando won fast. Game 3, Raynor was a little too slow because he couldn't draw white."

"He puts Unflinching Courage on Angelic Skirmisher . Then he declares First Strike and attacks with her. R chops with a bird." Trample.

Nice, that second game seemed like a lot of fun!

All that fixing to use so many colours seems to create a slow, unreliable deck. I'm glad we limited ourselved.

June 2, 2013 7:15 a.m.

Supersun says... #3

Yeah, it looks like that game was actually won turn 13 because of the 5 damage should have trampled through on both turn 12 and 13.

Fortunately she drew neither of her boardwipe cards against us. But I was hoping that Gaze of Granite would get drawn for curiosity's sake. I wanted to see how that turned out.

The deck came out well in this one, especially once you factor in the trample.

We are getting to see Angelic Skirmisher a lot, which is nice.

June 2, 2013 9:45 a.m.

Aside from the trample problem, that second match was the best we've seen, yet. Some excellent play by KrazyCaley. In fact, I think if Chryssalid had known about the trample, she would have swapped Krasis Incubation from Maze Abomination to Angelic Skirmisher . So, it probably worked out in our favor.

All in all, that was a great match.

Very nice playing! Elaine still declines to go into any sort of detailed commentary about our matches, unless that's just because we already know how it went.

June 2, 2013 1:29 p.m.

KrazyCaley says... #8

Really the trample thing is MY fault. I totally forgot about it. She said "chop block" and I was like "Oh, ok."

June 2, 2013 5:50 p.m.

Absinthman says... #9

I'm confused... I always thought that the term was to "chump block", but I see people use "chop block" here. Can anybody enlighten me, please?

June 3, 2013 6:49 a.m.

Goody says... #10

I usually use chump block also, maybe chop block because you're putting the creature up on the chop block?

June 3, 2013 1:11 p.m.

Chop block is a football term. It refers to style of blocking where one player throws his body at the legs/knees of another player. If you're a smaller guy and you're facing down a 350 lbs behemoth, your only chance of stopping him may be a chop block. Under certain conditions, this type of block is considered illegal.

Sorta fits the situation where a 1/1 dude is sacrificed to stop a 6/6 creature, but I'm not sure which is the appropriate term.

June 3, 2013 2:40 p.m.

I should probably specify that I'm referencing American football.

June 3, 2013 2:42 p.m.

KrazyCaley says... #13

I use them interchangeably. I think "chop block" is something that prevails in my local playgroup; the more general terms is probably "chump block." I like "chop block" better though.

June 3, 2013 6:12 p.m.

Goody says... #14

So far we've only lost to the two players who have gone 4-1, let's hope those are our only losses! When's the next match coming up, KrazyCaley?

June 4, 2013 11:11 a.m.

ScionLocke says... #15

KrazyCaley: Game 2 should have been over much faster because Unflinching Courage gives trample and Angelic skirmisher was only getting chump blocked.

Cdawg44 says... #16

So umm.... are we getting another game? or...

There has been a bit of a delay; "CJ" has had a bit of a family emergency. I am hoping it will be up by tomorrow.

Ok. DEFINITELY up by tomorrow. Possibly tonight.
