Hello TappedOut, this is Dallie calling out a special challenge for you homebrewers and guild supporters at home.

This challenge will match up each of the Guilds of Ravnica and decide once and for all which Guild is the greatest! So whether you're a dedicated Azorius peacekeeper or prefer the darker deeds of Dimir, dust off your Guildgates and get brewing on this Ultimate Guild Challenge!

Thus, welcome to the Ultimate Guild Challenges! This series of ten articles will work to uncover which Guild is the strongest.

Each article will cover a Guild, which you, the guild supporters, will create a deck for. These decks will be matched up against each other, until a sole victor will remain, who will be named Guild Representative.

The Guild Representative will move on to the Battle of Guilds, where each Guild will, randomly assigned, battle another Guild in a BO3 Elimination. The five Guilds who manage through the first power struggle, will then play each of the other remaining Guilds. The Guild with the most victories, will be Crowned as the strongest!

...

How's that for an intro? I hope you all got an idea of what's to come, and without further ado I will move onwards to

The First Guild: Golgari

The Golgari Swarm is the embodiment and amalgamation of life and death. Growth and power, are key to the Swarm, and as a consequence of their necromantic magic, the Golgari are the largest Ravnican Guild.

Submit your decks on the Ultimate Guild Challenge: Golgari page.

The deadline for the first of challenges Golgari Swarm is June 23rd, 2013 at 23:59 CEST

Deck-Building Rules:

1) A member can post one deck for each Guild. Only one submission per Member will be taken. If you decide to alter your deck, please note so in a comment or just change your decks.

2) Each deck must be two-coloured following guild colours; no splashing allowed! Split cards may be played, if the half or halves that are being played is only either or both of the guild's colour. So a Golgari deck can play Away of Far / Away , an Izzet deck can play Far, and a Dimir deck can play both, fusing included.

3) A deck must be exactly 60 cards; no more, no less. Sideboards will not be used.

4) A deck may only contain cards from Ravnica: City of Guilds, Guildpact, Dissension, Return to Ravnica, Gatecrash or Dragon's Maze.

5) A deck may cost no more than 100 dollars, judged by TCGplayer's average prices.

I will assemble each deck on Cockatrice, set up brackets and duel the decks. I will play the matches making all rational decisions that a skilled player would make. Unfortunately due to practical reasons, we can't each play our own deck. Timezones, timing and timely manner are the keywords here.

It is probably wise to keep in mind that your deck may play any match-up, and keeping it fit to fight a broader spectrum of deck types, will probably benefit you in the long run.

So, Guild supporters and wagon-hoppers, join in for this first of ten Guild Challenge Series, and submit your Golgari decks here Ultimate Guild Challenge: Golgari before June 23rd, 2013 at 23:59 CEST!

The next article in this series is Ultimate Golgari Guild Deck Challenge - Part 2

so i'm not sure if i am reading this right or not, but am i allowed to submit ten decks, one for each guild?

June 21, 2013 12:22 a.m.

ScionLocke says... #2

m12fox i believe right now it's just for golgari.

June 21, 2013 12:51 a.m.

Goody says... #3

A golgari deck designed to beat other golgari decks will be a more powerful contender for guild representative, yet it may not be the most powerful contender against the other guilds. Do you see this as being a problem, or will it not even matter?

The Golgari Swarm

Love this idea, I might just make the other decks tonight :D

June 21, 2013 2:43 a.m.

Cdawg44 says... #10

One question.... If I wanted to include a card that had 2 color options for paying it's mana (example: Rubblebelt Raiders ), but the guild fits only 1 of the colors, is that allowed?

June 21, 2013 2:49 a.m.

KnightLife says... #11

June 21, 2013 2:58 a.m.

Dallie says... #12

@Cdawg44: Hybrid mana counts as both. This is because I felt it would be counter intuitive to allow a Gruul deck to run Boros Reckoner , for example. So Rubblebelt Raiders is OK for a Gruul deck, but not for anything else.

June 21, 2013 3:49 a.m.

Dallie says... #13

@Goody: That's something you'll have to decide on by yourself. If everyone makes good decks, designed to be able to combat most strategies, this will end up not mattering.

A typical Golgari Deck

So, I think the real question is...

Who's going to essentially copy the traditional Golgari Aggro deck from Block Tournaments.

June 22, 2013 4:29 a.m.

Dallie says... #19

@Supersun can that be done for less than 100 dollars?

June 22, 2013 4:51 a.m.

Supersun says... #20

Ahh, just caught that you can't play hybrid mana cost cards unless your guild can play both colors. I can't realistically see a Golgari Aggro deck working without those cards such as Dryad Militant or Rakdos Cackler .

June 22, 2013 7:05 a.m.

Dallie says... #21

Supersun in the case of Rakdos Cackler it Makes even more sense, that it is disallowed in any build outside of Rakdos, given it's name :p

8bitJesus says... #22

@Dallie I was curious as to how spread out this challenge would be. The reason I ask is that it would seem as though some of the face offs would be pre M14 rules, and others would be post. I imagine that there will be many people using some of the same Legendary creatures in these guild challenges, and/or cloning. If this is the case are they all going to be pre or post rules changes to keep things fair?

June 22, 2013 1:25 p.m.

Dallie says... #23

@8bitJesus: I will do all of the challenges pre-M14 rules, as that is the one that will be active during the first matches.

June 22, 2013 2:05 p.m.

8bitJesus says... #24

June 22, 2013 2:40 p.m.

@Dallie I'm thinking about making a golgari but then I am afraid it might beat the Dimir submission I want to enter when the time comes for that color of guild.

I might submit one later tonight

June 22, 2013 3:16 p.m.

Dallie says... #26

8bitJesus Didn't you just link my deck?

June 22, 2013 3:56 p.m.

Dallie says... #27

ponderthewonder Haha, well the more decks you include, the more likely you are to win! Also makes it that much more fun, in the long run!

June 23, 2013 10:22 p.m.

Dallie says... #38

@xlaleclx is your deck private? I can't seem to access it.

June 24, 2013 5:29 a.m.

vic says... #39

If you always let us know what the next guild will be, it will better allow some of us time to make them. I could start one now, but I don't know which one is next.

June 24, 2013 5:54 a.m.

Dallie says... #40

@vic: I am working on it, but I won't post the next Guild until I'm in the process of matching up this guild, which is 34-something matches. Next guild challenge will come up Friday, I think, and will be available for sign-ups all through Sunday the 7th, as I am going on vacation. So to avoid people getting impatient with results and new guild challenges, I am doing it like this. I hope you and everyone will Golden Bear with me, in the meanwhile. :)

June 24, 2013 6:04 a.m.

vic says... #41

I understand. Though if it's impatience that is the concern, it seems like giving people something to do in the meantime might not be bad.

June 24, 2013 6:25 a.m.

ninjadude159 says... #42

well if you want something to do just make decks that aren't golgari. I'm going to assume that all the same rules apply. If you start making new decks now then you'll have time to polish them later (e.g. your favorite guild).

June 24, 2013 2:38 p.m.

Man, I dig this challenge a lot! I myself started brewing up a series of decks awhile ago in those same parameters, to try and make efficient and flavorful Guild decks. Bummer that I missed out on this one, as Golgari is my second-favorite guild to build around (my other being Orzhov). I'll be sure to watch this with great interest.

Just for fun (I know submissions for Golgari are closed), here's my take on the Golgari theme: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/ravnica-revisted-the-swarm/

June 24, 2013 3:31 p.m.

Dallie says... #44

The decks I have been unable to accept so far are:

@Chilli_Axe and his deck B/G Sacrimator - too many illegal cards. If you want to change it do it tonight!

@blade_masteh and his deck Jarad's Borders - Boneyard Wurm is NOT legal. Change it tonight. Tomorrow is too late.

@xlaleclx - Your deck is private, so I can't pull it. Change this setting or I can't accept the submission.

Everyone else is accepted, a total of 35 decks (excluding the 3 unaccepted ones).

That means 8bitJesus, APPLE01DOJ, AzrielBarakiel, Blakkhand, Carpediem, CaveShinobi, Cdawg44, Darkness1835, dcarpntr, DukeNicky, GureiSeion, IPyro92, IronHead, JHermy, killroy726, KingSorin, KnightLife, LittleBlueHero, mstancea, MTG_Player, Narwek, ninjadude159, paulmorphy44, piedok, psychoza, Riceeman, sewellius, shadowfoxxx, solnox, Supersun, Thebigshaggy, TheLameSauce, TristanTaylorsVoice, vault9, and zaddos. You all have approved decks.

June 24, 2013 5:24 p.m.

Dallie says... #45

@TheGreatBooster I've accepted your submission, just this once. Keep an eye out for deadlines next time! :)

June 24, 2013 5:26 p.m.

Alechilles says... #46

I'm ready for when Selesnya and Izzet come around.

June 24, 2013 8:32 p.m.

miracleHat says... #47

waiting for selesnya, izzet, rakdos, boros, azorius, orzhov!

June 24, 2013 8:41 p.m.

@Dallie Oh! Thanks! I didn't actually expect to get in, but I appreciate it nonetheless. I'll be sure to jump in early on future challenges. :)

June 24, 2013 8:55 p.m.

vic says... #49

ninjadude159...except I'm not gonna make 9 freaking decks : ) I might do 1 or 2 when they come up, but it's not important.

June 25, 2013 3:07 a.m.

vic says... #50

Dallie are you sure you will have time to do this? That's a LOT of decks to play best of 3 matches against each other over the course of this whole thing.

June 25, 2013 3:08 a.m.

Dallie says... #51

@vic I will play the first round of matches as BO1, in order to get this out as soon as possible. Momentum is key, I'd say.

June 25, 2013 3:19 a.m.

Why not just ban specific cards like jace and bob or put a cap on how much a specific card can cost? This makes it so that it's not really a fight of which guild is best, but which one had the best cards printed at very low costs. It makes it a forced aggro/midrange format. It's hard to even use the shocklands without dumbing the deck down a lot.

June 25, 2013 6:29 p.m.

Narwek says... #53

Do we get anything for winning, besides obvious bragging rights (not that those aren't enough)?

June 25, 2013 10:52 p.m.

Dallie says... #54

@UGplayerWillie I think there's just too many cards that I'd have to ban. Setting a limit somewhere was way easier, in case I'd forgotten about a card.

Also putting a ban on a specific card would mean, that I would have to check all individual card prices. All in all it didn't seem like the way to go.

@Narwek I wish I could supply something, but alas, I am a poor student, I don't have much to spare. I don't think anything I can put into it is going to satisfy anyone, so I've decided to leave it out rather than do it poorly.

Maybe I'll cut a deal with yeaGO! next time I make a challenge!

June 26, 2013 1:16 a.m.

Narwek says... #55

Its fine. Having Bragging Rites for being the best guild deck maker is amazing

June 26, 2013 1:20 a.m.

DukeNicky says... #56

So just curious when does construction of the next Guild's deck commence and which Guild is it? Also hooray for making it to Round 2 I honestly didn't think I would as I don't run these colours often (negligible for G)

June 26, 2013 3:10 a.m.

Dallie says... #57

@DukeNicky: The next deck construction article should be up Friday. Until then I'm working on getting the matches done.
