vs.

Comments from Sectoid in bold.

Game 1

Sectoid wins the toss and plays first. He keeps an opener of 2x Mountain, Mugging, Aerial Maneuver, Ruination Wurm, Angelic Skirmisher, Skyknight Legionnaire.

i predict that if i cast all the spells in my hand during this game, i will win.

Tappedout keeps an opener of 2x Island, Rapid Hybridization, 2x Shambleshark, Cloudfin Raptor, Ivy Lane Denizen.

Turn 1

S plays Mountain and passes.

T draws Simic Charm, plays Island for Cloudfin Raptor, and passes.

Turn 2

S draws Spire Tracer, plays Mountain, and passes.

green or white, i don't care.

T draws Forest and plays it. He attacks with Cloudfin Raptor.

Man, what am I doing attacking with a 0 power creature? That was stupid of me.

During the declare blockers step, C flashes down Shambleshark, evolving the Raptor to 1/2; it hits. (T 20, S 19).

C passes.

Turn 3

S draws Crowned Ceratok. He casts Mugging on Shambleshark, killing it, and passes.

T draws Frontline Medic. He plays Island and attacks with the Cloudfin Raptor. During combat he flashes down Shambleshark, evolving the Raptor to 2/3. It hits. (T 20, S 17). T passes.

Turn 4

S draws Mark for Death. He does nothing and passes.

sucks.

T draws Forest, plays it, and casts Ivy Lane Denizen, evolving Shambleshark to 3/2. He attacks with Raptor and Shark, hitting. (T 20, S 12). He passes.

Turn 5

S draws Skinbrand Goblin, casts it, and passes.

T draws Forest and plays it. He casts Frontline Medic evolving Raptor (now 3/4) and Shark (now 4/3. S concedes.

that's what happens when you get stuck on two lands.

This is probably at least a slight ragequit, as Sectoid is prone to do.

Sideboarding

T makes no changes.

I see Skinbrand Goblin and Mugging, but that's hardly enough to go on. Not going to mess with success until I know more.

S boards in a Gruul Charm for a Mark for Death.

Game 2

S plays first. He keeps an opener of Mountain, Spire Tracer, Angelic Skirmisher, Scorchwalker, Skarrg Goliath, Legion Loyalist, Mugging.

T keeps an opener of 2x Forest, Island, Frilled Oculus, Frontline Medic, Shambleshark, Rust Scarab.

Turn 1

S plays Mountain for Legion Loyalist, attacks with it, and passes. (S 20, T 19).

I hope this is some kind of extreme turbo haste red deck, because if so, I am going to win.

T draws Frontline Medic, plays Forest, and passes.

Turn 2

S draws Forest, plays it, casts Spire Tracer, then attacks with Legion Loyalist and passes. (S 20, T 18).

T draws Shambleshark. He plays Island and passes.

duuuuun. duuuuuunDUN.

Turn 3

S draws Disciple of the Old Ways. He casts it.

don't know what to do here. i am pretty sure he has a shambleshark because he cast two in like the first four turns last time and i saw a million of them in the packs. i think i should just wait until battalion activates. maybe he can flash it down and i'll kill it with mugging next turn.

S passes. End step, T flashes down Shambleshark.

It's no fun anymore when all the beachgoers get out of the water and are pointing horrified at the fin.

yay, i at least kind of know how to play magic.

T draws Scab-Clan Charger. He attacks with Shambleshark, which hits. (S 18, T 18). He passes.

probably has Simic Charm or bloodrush or something.

Turn 4

S draws Mountain and plays it.

let's at least get out the simic charm from his hand.

S casts Mugging on the Shark, which kills it. He attacks with all his creatures and hits. (S 18, T 14).

Can't block with flashed-down shark because all his stuff has first strike. Loyalist is a good card.

S passes. End step, T flashes down Shambleshark.

how many of those does he have?

T draws Ivy Lane Denizen. He casts Frilled Oculus, evolving the shark. (Now 3/2). He attacks with the shark and hits. (S 15, T 14). He passes.

Oculus can block. Hopefully he doesn't have more removal, or he'll be outracing me and I'll need to draw a land to avoid death.

Turn 5

S draws Forest and plays it. He attacks with everything.

This is a really difficult decision. With everything having first strike, he's telling me that he has a combat trick of some kind. He doesn't usually bluff that kind of thing, so I'll give him credit for it.

T doesn't block and everything hits. (S 15, T 10). S casts Scorchwalker and passes.

Knew it.

T draws Rapid Hybridization.

This is a really difficult situation to play correctly. He would probably be willing to trade either of my guys for his Scorchwalker. I currently have a worse board position, but I do have Rapid Hybridization. Only problem with that is that it doesn't really make any of his guys worse. I could take away his first strike by hitting the loyalist, but that turns a 1/1 into a 3/3, which I'd rather not do. I don't really see any tricks based on the Hybridization except to use it to evolve the Shark unexpectedly. I'll offer to trade the mana-hungry Oculus for the Scorchwalker and leave the shark to block; he'll have to have another combat trick that can get by me Rapid Hybridizationing my oculus for that not to be a good play.

T attacks with Frilled Oculus. S does not block. T pumps the Oculus in response, leaving blue mana open. Oculus hits. (S 12, T 10). T passes.

Turn 6

S draws Ordruun Veteran.

i haven't drawn a white land all match.

S attacks with Disciple of the Old Ways and Scorchwalker. During the Declare Attackers step, T casts Rapid Hybridization targeting Frilled Oculus.

FROG HOMUNCULUS LIZARD IS SOMEHOW EVEN MORE DISTURBING THAN BEFORE. I hope he doesn't have another combat trick, or this is going to go south in a hurry. Still, if I don't do SOMETHING here I'm going to die to his next attack.

Oculus dies. The 3/3 frog lizard evolves the shark to 4/3. The 3/3 frog lizard blocks Scorchwalker and Shambleshark blocks Disciple of the Old Ways. Disciple, Walker, and Frog Lizard die; Shark lives. T takes no damage. S passes.

Yesssss. I wonder why he didn't attack with Spire Tracer.

good play. i'm still ok though. he had to use two cards to do that.

T draws Simic Charm. He attacks with Shambleshark and hits. (T 10, S 8). He passes.

Laaaand.

Turn 7

S draws Plains and plays it.

What is with all the three-color decks?

S casts Ordruun Veteran and passes.

T draws Gyre Sage.

Let's attack first to see what happens.

T attacks with Shambleshark. S does not block. (T 10, S 4).

Damn, was hoping for the block there. Would have wrecked him.

T casts Gyre Sage and passes.

Turn 8

S draws Plains and plays it. He casts Angelic Skirmisher.

Oh hell.

S attacks with Loyalist, Tracer, Veteran, naming lifelink with Angelic Skirmisher. T blocks Loyalist with Sage. Loyalist dies. Everything else hits. (S 12, T 3). S passes.

T draws Nimbus Swimmer. He does nothing and passes.

Laaaaaaaaaaaaand.

Turn 9

S draws Mountain and plays it. Beginning of combat, T bounces Angelic Skirmisher to hand with Simic Charm. S attacks with Spire Tracer and Ordruun Veteran.

I don't like where this is going.

T blocks Veteran with Gyre Sage. S bloodrushes Skarrg Goliath onto Spire Tracer and T concedes.

nuclear missile launched

I might have saved that Simic Charm, but leaving Skirmisher on the board wouldn't have been good either. Bad news all around. But only 3 land; it happens.

Sideboarding

T boards in 1x Hands of Binding, 1x Angelic Skirmisher. He boards out 1x Shambleshark, 1x Metropolis Sprite,

Feel like we need to play a little more control-style against this deck. Hands of Binding in particular will be useful. Hopefully he'll just mana-screw himself and we'll win.

S makes no changes.

Game 3

T plays first. He keeps an opener of 2x Island, 2x Forest, Plains, Frilled Oculus, Gridlock.

After that last game, all that mana looks beautiful.

S keeps an opener of Mountain, Plains, Aerial Maneuver, Spire Tracer, Crowned Ceratok, Skarrg Goliath, Disciple of the Old Ways.

Turn 1

T plays Forest and passes.

S draws Disciple of the Old Ways, plays Mountain, and passes.

Turn 2

T draws Frontline Medic, plays Island for Frilled Oculus, and passes.

S draws Ordruun Veteran, plays Plains, and passes.

Turn 3

T draws Forest and plays Plains. He attacks with the Oculus, who hits for 1. (T 20, S 19). He casts Frontline Medic and passes.

ok, forest, one time.

S draws Skinbrand Goblin and casts it, then passes.

better than nothing, i guess.

Turn 4

T draws Island and plays Forest. He attacks with both creatures. No blocks. T pumps the Oculus and everything hits. (T 20, S 13). T passes.

S draws Forest and casts Spire Tracer, then passes.

thank you sweet jesus.

Turn 5

T draws Forest and plays Island.

Ok, a few too MANY lands now, thanks.

T attacks with everything. S blocks Medic with Goblin and uses Aerial Maneuver on it.

Man, there is a lot of stuff in here with first strike.

T pumps the Oculus, which hits. Frontline Medic dies. Goblin lives. (T 20, S 10).

T passes.

S draws Angelic Skirmisher. He casts Disciple of the Old Ways, leaving red open. He attacks with Spire Tracer and Skinbrand Goblin and hits. (T 17, S 10).

no reason to block since he can make it a 3/5

S passes.

Turn 6

T draws Shambleshark. He plays Island and attacks with the Oculus, which hits after T pumps it. (T 17, S 7). T passes.

JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT IT WAS SAFE, etc.

S draws Plains and plays it. He attacks with all his creatures; they all hit. (T 12, S 7).

I would have to trade Shambleshark for one of them, which I am not enthusiastic about because he and the Oculus are my only creatures. Best to just flash it down end step and try to kill him.

S casts Crowned Ceratok and passes. End step, T flashes down Shambleshark

Kind of puts a damper on my plans to kill him, that does.

Turn 7

T draws Hands of Binding. He plays a Forest.

EXACTLY what I needed, or a Nimbus Swimmer. With Gridlock, I can hopefully kill him in two turns now.

T casts Hands of Binding targeting Crowned Ceratok and ciphering onto the Oculus. He attacks with everything and hits after pumping the Oculus. (T 12, S 2). The Cipher copy keeps Disciple of the Old Ways tapped down.

S draws Ordruun Veteran and casts it. He passes.

Turn 8

T draws Ivy Lane Denizen. He casts Gridlock for 3 and S concedes.

@*(#&, that was frustrating. thought i was finally going to win a match.

Magic: The Gathering is a game where you can get chased by a shark with two arms and crab legs, holding weapons, but it's ok because you have this whole giant army to protect you, but then it turns out they got stuck in a traffic jam, so the shark kills you.

Thoughts

i wish i had that game 1 back. just couldn't get any land. and i was so close in game 3!

Had a slight hiccup there in game 2, and basically faced no opposition in game 1, but game 3 is basically how this deck is supposed to win games, and it did very nicely despite being a tad flooded.

Results

Tappedout def. Sectoid 2-1

Grim def. Bernard 2-1

(Bernard nearly won this match. He wanted me to pass along this informative story- in game 3, he tells me, he found an unexpected resource where he needed three blockers to stay alive and win next turn, but he only had two. He had Beckon Apparition in hand, but there were no creatures in the graveyard. But he did have Scorchwalker also in hand, so he bloodrushed an ENEMY creature to get something in the graveyard for the Beckon to target, and stayed alive. Grim had some kind of trick that prevented him from winning the next turn and he ended up losing anyway, but I thought it was a very educational play).

P.T. def. Muton 2-1

Elaine def. Lee 2-1

(very hard fought, apparently; game 1, which Lee won, lasted for about an hour, and the other two games combined lasted another 40 minutes)

Next Round

Tappedout (4-0) vs. Grim (4-0)

P.T. (1-3) vs. Sectoid (0-4)

Elaine (4-0) vs. Bernard (1-3)

Muton (1-3) vs. Lee (1-3)

yay :D 4-0 is the best record we have ever had in this online draft. achievement unlocked. great piloting of the deck especially in game 3 that lucky hands of binding really sealed the deal too. very excited to see how far this deck takes us.

An hour!!? What, were they both playing turbo fog?

March 10, 2013 8:58 a.m.

Sectoid's deck is another 3 color greek tragedy. At least he has the sense to run 18 lands, though. Having play-tested it a few times, the color to fear is red. That's what he needs for first strike. And first strike is a problem for us.

KrazyCaley got a little lucky in game 3, but he's done a great job piloting this deck. Kudos! I've used Rapid Hybridization after declaring blockers - once blocked; always blocked - but I like how KC used it to pump a shark and even up the battlefield.

Oh, and once again, we would not have had the mana to cast Angelic Skirmisher had we drawn it. Needs another W source when it goes in.

March 10, 2013 9:58 a.m.

vic says... #4

Exciting match there. Good combat decisions.

I agree, we need another white source if Angelic Skirmisher goes in. But I'm not sure that we even need the Skirmisher. Looking at the games in which our deck has done best, I'm not sure we want to trade out our speed for the Skirmisher.

vic says... #5

Let's not tell Caley anything about what's in the other decks, but I want to say that I could see Bernard's deck beating Elaine. We could be in a very good position after next round.

March 10, 2013 11:02 p.m.

Keeping away from spoilers, I would say that we have a tough round 5 matchup. Grim's deck seems like it may have brought a couple bigger boats.

March 10, 2013 11:59 p.m.

Goody says... #7

Really only one bigger boat. We just have to overwhelm his deck like we did with the others, we should be fine.

March 11, 2013 12:15 a.m.

vic says... #8

Really, landgrafb? I think our deck will be a matchup problem for Grim. I'm actually a little surprised that he's 4-0.

At the same time, I'm equally surprised that Sectoid's deck is 0-4. I would have thought his the better of the two(Grim).

March 11, 2013 12:27 a.m.

Goody says... #9

I think it's the mana. 3-colors are really hard to pull off in this Limited where you'll only include 18 lands max and there's so many dual colored requirements. Now I'm really glad we didn't go full on Bant with more white cards and only splashed for bombs.

March 11, 2013 12:30 a.m.

If I recall, Grim is a pretty good pilot, and has a knack for black (hence the name). His deck fits his style, and has plenty of tricks to keep our sharks guessing. I think he is good enough to give us a run for our money, even without the raw power of sharks with arms.

March 11, 2013 12:35 a.m.

vic says... #11

Remember guys, we don't wanna give Caley any specific info about the other decks. Even colors. He probably doesn't have that info. Wouldn't be fair if he knew something his opponents didn't.

March 11, 2013 5:36 a.m.

vic says... #12

But yeah, good point. There is the piloting factor. I think Caley outplayed Sectoid.

March 11, 2013 5:44 a.m.

Let's take the discussion of Grim's deck over to... Grim's GTC DDD Deck. That's one place where KC won't find the comments.

Game 2, Turn 9:

You would have had to bounce the Skirmisher to his hand when he passes priority during main phase 1 to avoid him naming effects. See ruling: "You choose which ability creatures you control will gain when Angelic Skirmishers ability resolves. This happens before attacking creatures are declared."

March 11, 2013 11:12 a.m.

zandl says... #15

Sectoid was greedy in keeping the first game's hand, but only pure, dumb luck saved him game-two.

March 11, 2013 12:36 p.m.

KrazyCaley says... #16

@jkarnes - You're quite correct; the transcription does not capture the actual detail of what happened. As I recall, it went down like this:

S, during what had been his main phase - ::taps a bunch of creatures::

Me - "Wait, I have responses. I'm bouncing the Skirmisher to hand BEFORE YOU ATTACK" (pays blue and green, shows Simic Charm.)"

Him - "Oh. ::picks up Skirmisher, then taps his other creatures::"

I know that Skirmisher's ability triggers during the Beginning of Combat step. "Beginning of Combat" is probably inaccurate here, technically. Indeed, end of first main is when it was bounced, since the ability ended up untriggered. I was deliberately vague in saying "before you attack" rather than "before your main phase ends" because I didn't want to remind him that he could recast the Skirmisher if he wanted. He was so anxious to attack that I just said "before attacking" and hoped for the best, which indeed occurred. This is perhaps a little ungentlemanly, but I believe I was firmly within the bounds of TR 4.1 since he did not actually inquire specifically when I was bouncing the angel.

Anyway, about to play Grim.

March 11, 2013 3:30 p.m.

Goody says... #17

Huh. I always thought there was a step between the main phase and the combat phase, sort of a "end of main phase" step where nonactive players could cast instants/etc. and the active player would no longer be within his main phase after resolving. Turns out that's just the beginning of combat step.

March 11, 2013 5:32 p.m.

jkarnes says... #18

@KrazyCaley: The only reason I bring it up is that based on how the transcript was written it seemed like he never got the opportunity to re-cast the angel. Not that it is super important because game 2 went to the opposition anyway, but relevant for future games on both sides of the table (as we have a Skirmisher too).

A perfect example as to why slowing down and being methodical is important.
