Comments from KrazyCaley in italics.

Comments from Elaine in bold.

Game 1

Tappedout wins the toss and plays first. It mulligans a hand of Island, Metropolis Sprite, Frontline Medic, 2x Shambleshark, Prophetic Prism, Rust Scarab

Boooooo.

Elaine keeps a hand of 3x Swamp, Island, Grisly Spectacle, Agoraphobia, Sage's Row Denizen.

Tappedout keeps a hand of Island, Forest, Shambleshark, Gridlock, Rust Scarab, Simic Charm.

Turn 1

T plays Island and passes.

E draws Mindeye Drake, plays Island, and passes.

Oh, is blue a Magic: The Gathering color? I forgot it existed, what with all our opponents' decks.

Turn 2

T draws Hands of Binding, plays Forest, and passes.

E draws Wight of Precinct Six, plays Swamp, casts the Wight, and passes. End step, T flashes in Shambleshark.

Turn 3

T draws Plains and plays it. He casts Hands of Binding targeting the Wight, and ciphers it onto the shark. He attacks with shark and hits, declining to cast a cipher copy of Hands. (T 20, E 18). He passes.

E draws Dimir Guildgate. She plays Swamp and casts Sage's Row Denizen, then passes.

The mill deck went 6-0, eh? Well, we can't have it going 7-0.

Turn 4

T draws Island and plays it. He attacks with Shambleshark. E blocks with Sage's Row Denizen.

Caley wouldn't make this play if he didn't have a combat trick, but it's probably either Bloodrush or Simic Charm. If it's Bloodrush, then he loses a creature for it, which is fine, and if it's Simic Charm, then that's going to stop me from using Grisly Spectacle and Agoraphobia, so getting it out of the way is also fine. The only way this is a bad play is if Caley would have tapped out to cast something if I hadn't blocked, but I think this is the percentage play.

T pumps Shambleshark with Simic Charm. The Denizen dies. T passes.

E draws Cloudfin Raptor and plays Swamp. She puts Agoraphobia on the Shambleshark, making it a -3/2. She attacks with Wight of Precinct Six and hits. (T 19, E 18). She passes.

I've learned to use Agoraphobia before anything else because you can bring it back, and Grisly Spectacle is a good thing to save for later.

Turn 5

T draws Island and plays it. He casts Rust Scarab and passes.

Just what I need to get rid of the pesky Agoraphobia.

E draws Swamp and plays Dimir Guildgate. She casts Grisly Spectacle on Rust Scarab, killing it and milling Forest, Island, Wasteland Viper, Frontline Medic. Wight of Precinct Six is a 4/4. She attacks with it and hits. (E 18, T 15). She passes.

Best to do this while he has no mana.

Oh, that hurts.

Turn 6

T draws Frilled Oculus and casts it. Shambleshark becomes a -2/2. He passes.

E draws Island and plays it. She casts Cloudfin Raptor, then Mindeye Drake evolving the Raptor to 1/2. Then she passes.

Going to hang back with the Wight for now. The fliers should be sufficient, and I'd like to guard against any ridiculously pumped attacks.

Turn 7

T draws Ivy Lane Denizen. He casts it and passes. Shambleshark is -1/3.

I can build up a nasty board if I can survive a little while.

E draws AEtherize. She plays Swamp. She attacks with her fliers and passes. (E 18, C 12).

Turn 8

T draws Frontline Medic. He casts it. Shambleshark is 0/4. He passes.

E draws Devour Flesh. She attacks with her fliers and passes. (E 18, C 9).

Turn 9

T draws Island. He attacks with all his creatures except Shambleshark. E casts AEtherize returning Medic, Denizen, Oculus to hand. T recasts Oculus and Medic, evolving Shambleshark to 2/6.

This deck is pretty brutal. I am not defeated yet, though.

E draws Island. She recalls Agoraphobia to hand. Then she casts Devour Flesh. T sacs Frilled Oculus. E recasts Agoraphobia on Shambleshark and it stays 2/6. Wight of Precinct Six is a 5/5. E attacks with her fliers and hits. (E 18, T 6).

Turn 10

T draws Rapid Hybridization. He casts Ivy Lane Denizen and passes.

E draws Island. She attacks with her fliers. T casts Rapid Hybridization on Mindeye Drake, which mills away Cloudfin Raptor, Shambleshark, Ivy Lane Denizen, Scab-Clan Charger, Forest. Wight of Precinct Six is a 9/9. Cloudfin Raptor evolves to 2/3 and hits. (E 18, T 4). E passes.

FROG LIZARD IS TOO SAD ABOUT HAVING TO MAKE THAT PLAY TO MAKE A FROG LIZARD JOKE.

Turn 11

T draws Simic Charm. He attacks with all his creatures, bouncing the Frog Lizard with Simic Charm first. Wight blocks Frontline Medic; shark and denizen hit. (E 14, T 4). T passes.

E draws Keymaster Rogue. Entering combat, T taps all her creatures with Gridlock. E casts Keymaster Rogue returning Wight of Precinct Six to hand. She recasts that, plays an Island, and passes.

Turn 12

T draws Nimbus Swimmer and casts it for 4. Shark is a 3/7. Denizen puts the counter on herself, now 3/4. T passes.

I am probably lost, but I can buy another turn by chop blocking the Wight.

E draws Devour Flesh. She attacks with Keymaster Rogue and hits. (E 14, T 1). She passes.

Turn 13

T draws Shambleshark. He attacks with all his creatures. Frontline Medic is blocked by Wight of Precinct Six. Everything else hits. (E 3, T 1). T passes.

Augh, so close. Flashing down the Shambleshark wouldn't win, and is best saved for if she makes the mistake of attacking with only the Wight.

E draws Grisly Spectacle. She attacks with Wight of Precinct Six and Keymaster Rogue, and T concedes.

He scared me for a minute there; I thought he had AEtherize.

Sideboarding

T removes a Metropolis Sprite for Hands of Binding

I originally toyed with putting in Hydroform, but that card just isn't better, even in this matchup, than other options that are already there.

E makes no changes.

Mortus Strider might make sense, but it's just too slow against Simic.

Game 2

T plays first and keeps an opening hand of 3x Island, 2x Forest, Gridlock, Frontline Medic.

Not a great hand, but I have to keep it rather than risking going to six. I sense defeat is impending with this, though.

E keeps 3x Island, Swamp, Dimir Guildgate, Wight of Precinct Six, Devour Flesh.

This is a risky hand to keep. I will need to draw spells quickly or be overwhelmed.

Turn 1

T plays Island and passes.

E draws Island, plays Dimir Guildgate, and passes.

Turn 2

T draws Simic Guildgate, plays it, and passes.

E draws Sage's Row Denizen, plays Island, casts Wight of Precinct Six, and passes.

Turn 3

T draws Island and plays it. He passes.

E draws Cloudfin Raptor and plays Island. She casts Sage's Row Denizen and passes.

I would attack, but Shambleshark would be a bad trade for the wight.

Turn 4

T draws Rapid Hybridization. He plays Forest and passes.

E draws Swamp and plays it. She casts Cloudfin Raptor and Sage's Row mills away Island and Scab-Clan Charger. Wight is 2/2. E attacks with Sage's Row Denizen alone, and hits. (E 20, T 18). E passes.

Turn 5

T draws Drakewing Krasis. He casts it and passes. End step, E casts Devour Flesh and the Krasis dies. (E 20, T 19). Wight is 3/3.

E draws Devour Flesh. She attacks with Denizen and Wight, and hits. (E 20, T 14). She passes after playing Swamp.

Turn 6

T draws Gyre Sage and casts it. He passes. E casts Devour Flesh and the Sage dies. (E 20, T 16). Wight is 4/4. T passes.

This is not going well.

E draws Lord of the Void. She plays Island. She attacks with Denizen and Wight, and hits. (E 20, T 10). She passes.

Turn 7

T draws Wasteland Viper. He plays Forest and casts it. Then he passes.

E draws Keymaster Rogue.

Should I set up the continuous milling with Rogue and Denizen, or should I cast Lord of the Void? He has a bunch of land and cards, so he might have an answer, but even if he does, I'm still fine. Lord.

E casts Lord of the Void. She attacks with Sage's Row Denizen, and C blocks with Wasteland Viper, killing both. Wight is 5/5.

How about damage on the stack, Elaine, just for this game? Not that it would help much.

E passes. End step, C casts Rapid Hybridization on Lord of the Void.

FOR HATE'S SAKE, FROG LIZARD SPITS HIS LAST BREATH AT THEE.

Turn 8

T draws Shambleshark. He passes.

E draws Paranoid Delusions. She casts it, milling Simic Charm, Frilled Oculus, Island. (Wight is 6/6). She ciphers onto the Wight. Entering combat, T taps down all her creatures with Gridlock. E casts Keymaster Rogue bouncing itself. Denizen mills 2x Forest. E passes. End step, T flashes down Shambleshark.

You've got this, Shambleshark

Turn 9

T draws Nimbus Swimmer and casts it for 5. Shark is 3/2. T passes.

E draws Swamp and plays it. She attacks with Wight of Precinct Six. T double-blocks it with Nimbus Swimmer and Shambleshark. The Swimmer and the Wight die. E casts Keymaster Rogue bouncing itself twice, then passes. The milled cards are Shambleshark, Prophetic Prism, Rust Scarab, Forest. 14 cards left in T's library.

Turn 10

T draws Forest, does nothing, and passes.

E draws Island and plays it. She attacks with 3/3 Frog Lizard. She hits. (E 20, T 7). She casts Keymaster Rogue bouncing itself twice, milling 2x Ivy Lane Denizen, Prophetic Prism, Plains. She passes.

Turn 11

T draws Forest and concedes. E wins the match 2-0.

No path to victory. 8 cards left in the library, and I will not kill her or stop her from using the Rogue in two turns.

Thoughts

Ouch. Absolutely dominated. But this was by far the worst run our deck has had, and could not have come at a worse time.

Your deck was a good deck, but from what I saw it had too many tricks and not enough creatures. Maybe those were just some bad draws; casting NOTHING for the first part of that second game seemed like pretty bad luck.

Goody says... #1

Oh man, what a heart-tugging end to the tournament! It would have been awesome if we had won, but as it is, we still did one hell of a good job. That second game really was bad luck for us, any creatures in the early game really would have helped. Turn 5 Drakewing Krasis was not the best the deck could have given us :( And the Wight both games... man.

It was definitely fun being a part of this though, and I'm sure you had fun playing the games too KrazyCaley. Thanks for continuing this series!

FROG LIZARD WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN

Sadness, its too bad that we lost, but i have got to hand it to you Caley; i don't think many people could have played this deck better. We had some bad draws and she had a ton of removal. I applaud you for your performance. LONG LIVE THE FISH CRABS!!!!!!!

March 13, 2013 11:19 p.m.

TridenT says... #3

Man, both those games were rough rows to hoe, and excruciating to read.

I didn't spoiler myself on decks before reading these, but I had a feeling some dirty mill was headed our way. Someone had to be scooping all that delicious Dimir up.

March 13, 2013 11:36 p.m.

DeckBuilder345 says... #4

No way you can keep that hand in the second game. We are an aggro deck and you had nothing you could play... that should have been a pitch for sure. That said seems like you did the best you could with what you had. her deck was scary for sure not suprised by the result.

March 13, 2013 11:57 p.m.

KrazyCaley says... #5

@DeckBuilder345 - You're probably right, but an aggro deck also hates, hates, HATES to mulligan. I was hoping to draw threats. But again, you are probably right. My inexperience with aggro may have led to that decision.

March 14, 2013 12:03 a.m.

Oh man. I've run our deck against Elaine's in the play tester at least twenty times. Not realistic, I know. I didn't think she stood a chance. The only way her list wins is with mana or draw problems for us, if hers draws every piece of removal, or she manages to cypher her mill enchantment on the unblockable rouge within the first few turns. Well, she got just about every piece of removal except a second copy of Grisly Spectacle in that first game. In the second, we drew poorly.

Tough loss. That was a very winnable match up. It was also a very entertaining tournament, though. Thanks KrazyCaley

March 14, 2013 12:16 a.m.

DeckBuilder345 says... #7

@ KrazyCaley yes it is always tougher to be down some on your gas... but far better to have a little less gas (6 cards) than keep a hand w/ none at all (those 7). I like to play aggro style decks quite a bit and believe it is better to typically be aggressive with your mulligans with an aggressive deck. Even going to 5 cards is still reasonable, as a hand with 2 mana and 3 early drops goes a long way to pressure the other side. Aggro doesn't care about cards just about taking that number 20 down to 0, you know philosophy of fire and all that.

Mulling past 5 chances aren't very good either way so i tend to keep unless i have no mana at that point, but a hand with 1 creature you don't have the mana to cast isn't getting it done. Come on over to the dark side and embrace your inner RDW enthusiast! lol. I think you will find mountains are pretty amazing if you give em a chance!
Any how don't sweat it heck 1 mistake in a full tournament like this is pretty darn good imo i usually make several in a tournament that long especially since you are doing so many other things like recording what happens for us fine folks along with providing commentary.

Again thanks for doing these and well played. It is always entertaining. When do we start up the next round? .

March 14, 2013 1:59 a.m.

CyRRdaR says... #8

Game 2, turn 8, Elaine casts her Keymaster Rogue bouncing itself and milling you for 2, but didn't her Sage's Row Denizen just die last turn ?

Too bad you weren't lucky on the draws, sure your hand game 2 wasn't good enough to be kept, but that's easy to say reviewing the game afterwards, had you drawn 4 creatures in a row, nobody would ever have pointed it out!

Anyway, that experience was a lot of thrill and fun to me, hope it was the same to you! Thanks again for your commitment and the time it must have taken you.

REMEMBER, REMEMBER, THE HYBRIDIZATION,

MUTATION, TREASON AND FROG;

I SEE NO REASON WHY THE FROG LIZARDATION

SHOULD EVER BE FORGOT.

vic says... #9

Looking at her list, I thought that if she doesn't happen to draw Wight of Precinct Six against us, she's gonna need a lotta luck to beat us. It was the only card that worried me, since the Lord was T7. She got it both times.

Btw, not to belabor these kinds of issues, but in Game 1, I see that our shark missed a couple of evolves when it was enchanted. Two turns in a row. Looks like it could have made a difference, but hard to say.

Well it was a hell of a run. I really think we all did well with this. Drafted well, and played well. And creative to actually run a 3rd color that was not paired with one of our main 2 in the set. I was very skeptical of drafting the white cards, but that worked out well. Fun to see it in action. Thanks for coordinating all of this.

March 14, 2013 5:08 a.m.

KrazyCaley says... #10

@CyRRdaR - Yeah, it did die. I at least remember what happened - there was a turn in there where she cast another one.

@vic - Yeah, I forgot to evolve it when Rust Scarab came out. I suck at remembering to evolve, basically.

March 14, 2013 5:54 a.m.

vic says... #11

We'll forgive ya. Thanks again for going to all the trouble. I learned some new thinking, and had some fun. I really think in best-of-7s, we might have beaten those two decks. We did well.

March 14, 2013 5:57 a.m.

KrazyCaley says... #12

@vic - I am inclined to think so against Grim. Maybe I just saw two god draws from Elaine, but her deck was pretty awe-inspiring; I would be interested to know if we could beat her in a best of seven. So much removal.

March 14, 2013 5:58 a.m.

vic says... #13

We have a lot of creatures, let her remove a few. Her deck was Wight of Precinct Six. Really, would she have beaten us without that card?

March 14, 2013 6:02 a.m.

KrazyCaley says... #14

@vic - Possibly not, and her only having one copy WAS unknown to me until I looked at it afterward. Still, she certainly can stall a while, and does have the capability to mill pretty well. A lot of evasion, too.

March 14, 2013 6:03 a.m.

vic says... #15

KrazyCaley, figure we side out the Hands of Binding because of removal, and put in a critter. I would say Daring Skyjek. Then let her have it. Some of our creatures will die, but most won't. Use Rapid Hybridization on the Wight if we get the chance. I think it would work.

March 14, 2013 6:06 a.m.

KrazyCaley says... #16

@vic Yeah. Definitely knowing a bit more about her deck helps a lot.

March 14, 2013 6:07 a.m.

vic says... #17

Yeah, if you knew she only had the one copy, that would have helped.

March 14, 2013 6:07 a.m.

TheBearShaker says... #18

So when is the next DDD?? need my fix

March 14, 2013 9:17 a.m.

exarkun809 says... #19

Kudos KC. These are a lot of fun.

March 14, 2013 9:58 a.m.

Goody says... #20

I have one question: why did you use Simic Charm to bounce the frog lizard in game one? I don't really know the board state but wouldn't it have been better to wait until she attacked with the wight or something else and bounced whatever was the biggest threat then? Unless you were just going for removal instead of stall

March 14, 2013 10:28 a.m.

Someone give me a hand. I want to submit something like the following for the card builder workshop.

Vocal Behemoth 1GG

Creature - Frog Shark Crab Lizard Spider

When ~ enters the battlefield, the flavor text on all permanents becomes capitalized.

1G, T: Target player sacrifices all permanents with capitalized flavor text unless he or she reads that flavor text with an inappropriately loud voice.

March 14, 2013 1:31 p.m.

KrazyCaley says... #22

@Goody - Removal. Works permanently on the Frog Lizard, at least. I'm could have bounced the Wight instead, I suppose, but I think both plays were pretty hopeless at that point.

@TheBearShaker - It'll be a bit. I have other projects that I really need to work on; there are like eight people who I was supposed to do an Apprentice's Workshop for by now and I've got to get that site tournament up and running. Maybe get a couple Daily Doses in. Once I stabilize all this news business, I'll organize another DDD. Maybe I'll wait until the DGM release and we'll include that in the draft.

March 14, 2013 3:35 p.m.

Cirdan13 says... #23

@TheBearShaker - You could always organize one yourself. KrazyCaley doesn't have to do them all.

March 18, 2013 9:13 p.m.

TridenT says... #24

Will there ever be a post-DDD wrap up, with analysis and interviews? :)

March 26, 2013 9:40 p.m.

KrazyCaley says... #25

@ TridenT - I have four out of seven interviews done (technically there is an "eighth interview," but it's just me talking about the draft). The remaining ones aren't done because our drafters are unavailable, but because I haven't done it yet. I'm getting there, I promise.

March 27, 2013 1:38 a.m.

TridenT says... #26

Cool! I was merely curious if it would wait until after March Madness Magic.
